5A1 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the aesthetic, cultural, historical, technological, social, political or other contexts relevant to individual subject disciplines. (Knowledge and understanding) (Research / critical awareness)

For my self directed study I have been researching quite a lot through most of these headings. The Mod movement has allowed to me to look back on and research through recent cultural history as well as the fact that my research topic has led me through social, cultural, political, technological and aesthetic areas of the topic as well.

Good

5A2 Demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between the theoretical and practical contexts of their own creative concerns. (Knowledge and understanding) (problem analysis/definition)

I believe I have demonstrated an awareness between the theoretical and practical pretty well although I may have blurred the lines a bit with the fact that my visual journal/investigation covers two different topics. I believe I have worked on them in a way for both topics to merge and to link together however it is a tenuous link at that.

Good

5B1 Evidence the ability to use logic, reasoning and critical judgement to analyse ideas from a range of primary and secondary sources. (Cognitive skills) (Critical awareness)

My main source of research has been through a visual approach of using Youtube to watch videos based around my topic. I find this is an extremely useful tool/approach to use and take because of my preferred way of researching. I have used judgment to document what relevant information I find as a way of informing my research and investigation throughout the module.

Good

5C1 Evidence the capacity for undertaking practical and theoretical research that demonstrates an informed application of critical, effective and testable processes. (Practical and professional skills) (research)

My main form of process has been evidenced through the visual journal where I have experimented through a whole range of processes but mainly ones through traditional ideas of image making such as different methods of drawing. As I progressed nearer to the end of the project or rather nearer to final hand in I found myself experimenting with collage mainly on the Mod visual study which took into account the topic and overall subject of my essay. Which is another method of image making that I have demonstrated in my visual journal.

directed projects and communicate outcomes through written and other appropriate forms. (Key transferable skills) (professionalism / technical competence / visual quality)

professionalism with this module as I have conducted my own research based essay and practical work to go with it however the professionalism has been let down by the fact that my time keeping and management of my COP work has been quite poor. I have not kept a constant pace of my research, journal or essay and I have foolishly left most things until the last minute thus not recognizing the importance of reflecting and changing aspects as I progress and develop the project.

Summative Evaluation Overall this years Context of Practice has been a very challenging module for me as I have not handled it very well organization wise. I have left everything it seems right up until the last minute and this will probably show in my submission. By placing my priority on other modules It meant that I had not given myself a good confident chance of keeping up to date with the development and research of the project which of course I self directed so it was my responsibility. I knew from the start that I was going to focus my essay and visual investigation around the topic of music but what was stopping me was also down to defining exactly what that would be about/around specifically. For a long while at the beginning I was incredibly stuck on where exactly to focus my topic. I went from one subject to another and found it incredibly difficult to nail down. I first thought of analyzing the impact that music has had through television or certain events that have taken place on live TV such as controversial performances. I then went over to the idea of looking into a topic on androgynous musicians and what their impact has been culturally. While I felt that this would have been a fairly unique project to take on I felt apprehensive to go fully forward with it as it is not an area I am fully aware of and I wasn’t confident that the academic research based sources were there to use. So eventually and certainy after too long I settled on the topic of researching into and analyzing the subject of the Mod/Modernists of 1960’s in Great Britain. As for the visual journal that has been a mixed bag of results I feel as I I created some strong outcomes/drawings which demonstrate a high level of craft and thought process however since there is two clear different sides to the journal there is definitely a lack of a coherent theme/structure throughout the visual investigation. The area which has the most work is an area that only very very slightly links in with my theoretical side. My essay has been a hard fought process as I once again left it until the last minute which meant that proper research was somewhat rushed and I could not produce the best possible outcome as part of the project investigation. This is a very annoying factor for me personally as it is pretty much seem’s as though I did not learn from my mistakes from last year. The hope is that now as I am approaching the end of second year I should have a lockdown on being able to conduct a self led research based module such as COP2 without becoming stuck, unmotivated and above all I should be keeping a constant pace with the workload not falling behind. Particularly for my own plan and structure but also to make sure I am on track with the structure of the module. Unfortunately, I feel that my own personal, professionalism side of this is still much to be desired and it leaves me in I feel a precarious position for where I stand with COP 3. There are still positives I can take away from the module however as I believe my visual journal and investigation side of things is fairly strong. I have done by best to demonstrate both developed and detailed drawings/outcomes which I believe use a wide variety of methods and hand drawn media to help

communicate a certain idea or message that I had intended for the visual investigation. Through my exploration in my visual journal I have since developed a personal way of drawing and communication that resonates with me and reflects a certain energy and emotion that I am aiming to communicate in the subjects that the drawings are of. This is through focusing on and analyzing how to use the formal elements. Such as Line which is incredibly important to me as an illustrator, Colour (equally as important), shape and collage which I am finding an ever more relevant method of making imagery for me in my personal work. I have therefore, with what has been mentioned, found a new appreciation for the visual formal elements and can understand how influential and important they are in terms of image making and I now take extra care and thought about how best to incorporate them into my work.
