End of Module Student Evaluation BA (Hons) Illustration Module Code: OUIL503 Responsive Name: Josh Atkinson Student ID: JA259815 Please identify where the evidence for each of the learning outcomes is within your submission and how well you feel you have met the learning outcomes. Please also grade yourself in relation to the learning outcomes using terms: poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent (Note - This is so that the team have an understanding of how well you feel you have done. It is not an indication of the actual grade you may receive.) Learning Outcome

Evidenced where? Blog, Visual Journal, Roughs, Final Illustrations, Storyboards, Development Sheets etc. (No more than 75 words)

5A4: Make appropriate use of a range of research methods to investigate a topic and produce work relating to the critical, cultural or social context of art and design. (Knowledge & Understanding - Research and Critical Awareness)

I believe certain methods of research have been utilized pretty well. There is evidence mainly on my blog for this. For example, in the Illustration 12 brief I have researched thoroughly into the subject matter such as researching song lyrics, making sure I understand the songs meaning and looking at existing covers which in turn helped me create a better outcome.

5B3: Generate ideas, concepts, proposals, solutions and/or arguments using the language, materials, processes and techniques of a designated discipline. (Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)

I believe through mainly Illustration 12 I have been exercising ideas and concepts and have created work that needs to be developed with a concept and a meaning as it is by nature taking the ideas and inspiration from the songs themselves and this is evidenced on my blog. However, I have not used the sketchbook in general in a very effective way especially for roughing and development and using it to push the ideas and concepts further and helping refining them rather than jumping straight to the designing stage via digital methods.

Good

5C3: Respond to set briefs or proposals in a professional context. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Conceptual Development)

Since I have only responded to ‘in Uni’ briefs I have not experienced how to submit to an outside of Uni in the real world style brief and I feel that I have suffered as a result for my experiences during this module. However, with the briefs I have done I have produced work with an intention to be as professional as possible. Once again I have evidenced the individual and the collaborative brief on my blog.

Good

5D3: Exercise selfmanagement skills in managing their workloads and meeting deadlines/apply interpersonal and social skills to interact with others. (Key Transferable Skills,

I did not take on as many briefs as I believe I could have and I do believe I was too reluctant to attempt other briefs however I did feel that most briefs via YCN or D&AD just didn’t suit my work methods or the type of outcome that was being asked for. I still believe I have demonstrated a good sense of self organizational skills with the briefs I decided to take

on such as Illustration 12, New statesman brief and my own self management within the collaborative brief.

Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) I believe I had a slow start with this whole module and was definitely reluctant to get going at first and I found although it was relatively late on, the Illustration 12 brief as a reason to get going because it was a brief that immediately appealed to me due to its music based themes. The New Statesman brief was also a music related brief with the Moby article and one that knew I wouldn’t pass up therefore reaffirming my interest in music related opportunities/briefs. I decided to make Illustration 12 my substantial brief where I ended up completing half of the 12 that was set which I felt in the end was enough. I feel that through Illustration 12 I have learnt a lot in terms of generally how to create a piece in relation and response to a piece of music as designing a song cover Is something I had never done before so I really relished that challenge but I wish I had attempted a few more but didn’t due to time constraints and other briefs and modules. As well as mocking the designs up and places them in a cover context was something id not done before and I thought it was amazing to see the designs in their rightful place as a product. It made me think how I would love to design album covers if I got the chance. I believe I used the blog fairly effectively as a reflective tool in all work evidenced through Studio Brief 1 and 2. Documenting down research on the Illustration 12 songs, research for other small briefs such as the New Statesman brief where I reflected on exactly how to approach the design in terms of what would be appropriate for the magazine/publication and with the collaborative brief I researched into Dave’s existing content which meant that the concept which I devised was a legible and unique idea that would be suitable in terms of what the brief was asking for. The module has given me a sense of what it is like in the professional world. Whether it is working as part of a collaboration and developing cognitive teamwork skills and responding to each others roles and doing each others individual roles to help push the team and the brief work forward. Or even the chance of being able to interact with an industry professional such as Gerry Brakus getting feedback off of her and gaining an understanding of what it is to be working with a client. Things I will do differently next time in future modules is to make sure I am getting everything I can get out of when designing/developing a piece of work. I really believe I am not using the method of roughing to create a developed and refined outcome enough which perhaps is being detrimental to all the outcomes I have created even though I am happy with what I have created. Having said this there is of course a high amount of thought that goes into each of my outcomes and most development takes place on screen so its not that I’m completely blindly creating/designing my outcomes. One thing I am fairly disappointed with is the fact that I don’t feel I’ve particularly developed any work that demonstrates an identity within my own work as it would be nice to look at work from one brief and then to look at another but still recognize the same visual signature. For example, the work that I have made in a promotional sense for the collaborative brief is completely different to say my song cover designs and even my cover designs vary enough in themselves. While I believe it is a good and healthy aspect that my work is changing and evolving I feel it is highly important to nail down some kind of work ‘style’ in that respect for my work. Overall although there is points to work on and points in which I feel I could have made a better personal submission by at least opting to choose a real world brief as opposed to just Uni organized and related briefs which meant that I wasn’t pushing any so called boundaries or going out of my comfort zone. I am still happy with the work that I have submitted and in particular I got a chance to work on music related brief such as Illustration 12 and it is an area I am pretty sure I would like to focus my practice on.
