OUIL502 PPP – Summer work viewing This is a selection of images taken from a day at the start of this year where we got to take a look at what everyone had been doing sketchbook wise over the summer which was amazing to see in terms of how people were evolving their practice. The books and images out on display were from my class, Level 5 and the 3rd years level 6. The images I have taken are the ones that stood out to me for I suppose various reasons. Its also worth noting that due to knowing certain peoples way of working I can identify for some people who’s work is who’s which I feel is really interesting and positive for their practices to show how they have grown a certain identity with their work.
For these images I know whose work it is which means I’m not really surprised by the lovely quality of it. It’s a really beautiful balance of detail and soft tones and washes that make them such lovely paintings/illustrations. The one on the left is just amazing craftsmanship as its done in pencil crayon which takes so much to be able to do it that level of quality. It has beautiful mark making in it in the bushes and the water.
I’m not sure if these are by the same person but they both hold a very strong identity in the character work. I also seem to remember the whose ever work it is on the right had a very impressive folder which included amazing character work which looked like it was almost intended to be used within animation as it had a very strong Disney-esque feel to it.
This is another one where I know whose work it is and again its brilliant to see the strong identity created in their character work. Carries a very very distinctive ‘style’ which has been really cool to see develop. I really admire how their personality is completely put into their work which explains why its so strong in terms of being able to identify it.
These two images offer up an interesting way of using crossover in the lines and letting different mediums blend together which adds another depth to the drawings/illustrations.
There was something about this character that really intrigued me, almost Quentin Blake like.
An interesting use of collage not quite sure how successful it is but its certainly different.
I think these are all by the same person and they all hold a strong yet again identifiable way of working which is a nod more in the direction of graphics.
Really lovely use of colour ion these watercolor examples which are almost reportage like, they remind me a bit of George Butler.
Chosen because I felt it is a really interesting approach to mark making and using drawn line as a powerful tool so to speak, also a different way of doing perhaps character as well.
Once again I know straight away whose work it is and it is again a strong and identifiable comic like way of working which is completely understandable as I know that comic like work is a huge influence to them.
I don’t know whose work this is but I feel they have as corny as it sounds discovered themselves as illustrators as these examples look like they are straight out of some sort of narrative for a children's book perhaps. Very strong work and while I may not relate to it aesthetically this kind of illustration takes great imagination to get right.
This minimal almost graphic like work has a great sense of appeal commercially and is ever more common I believe I don’t identify with it in huge amounts but when done like this it can be quite tasteful in my opinion.
Really good example of craftsmanship something that I don’t see myself attempting any time soon but its great to see someone exploring a different avenue such as this.
Same graphic type illustration as the other example which reflects a strong identity in their work.
Really interesting blend of media in this image and even more interesting is to see the persons comment of how its their first time at attempting this way of making an image.
I really love the wishy washy element of these which of course really suits the subject of the whales. Its also a very good and strong example of how to use simple yet bold shape effectively.
Really good strong character work but at the same time interesting calling it character when they are based off of a real person which shows they have been working on their own personal way of drawing people and making it their own.
It looks to be a really good example of what kind of textures you can get from a Lino print.
These are really cool people studies once again but a really different element is involving quotes that don’t directly relate which gives a different light hearted edge.
A lovely pencil crayon portrait/study of someone where they have gone for a fairly realistic style.
A really good example to show how effective a use of varied weight in the lines can be. I really love this drawing as there’s a complexity and simplicity to it that I cant quite explain.
