PROFILE In September 2009, I enrolled onto the five year Landscape Architecture MSc program at Edinburgh University. During the course I investigated the craft of model making as a design tool. During my forth year work placement year of the program I was employed by Atelier Loidl Landscape Architects as their first in-house model maker. I worked on a playground design with Grunes Grün Berlin GmbH for Am Lokdepot, Berlin-Schöneberg. In 2014, I graduated from Edinburgh University with a Landscape Architecture Ba(Hons)/ MSc. I was employed by the Edinburgh based office Gross Max. I was evolved in the Bristol Temple Quarter Arena competition in collaboration with Grimshaw Architects to develop a post-industrial brownfield site into a concert hall and performance space. My interest in model making as a craft extended to the luthier (guitar making) profession. In 2015, I worked for a Malawian guitar making charity called Mtengo Music. I taught guitar making and repairs to Malawian orphans with a large focus on business skills and forest management. I helped to establish a reforestation project with an NGO called Fisherman’s Rest. In September 2016-April 2017, I worked for a Rotterdam based startup office called Felixx Landscape Architects. I was evolved in several international competitions in Iceland, Russia and China. I was responsible for setting up the 3D modelling and rendered graphics in the office. 5

The Fort William Urban design project aimed to re-orientate the town centre back to the sea front. Fort William is situated on the north-eastern shore of Loch Eil and is the largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants. Through out the summer months the town is thriving with outdoor pursuits tourists due to its close proximity to Ben Nevis the tallest mountain in the UK. It is a gateway town to the Hebridean mountains. Given this status the town is failing to provide visitors with sufficient services and amenities and is considered worn and rundown by the locals. This design aims to re-identify the strong linkages with surrounding context of outstanding natural beauty making the west Highland Way a key feature of the new design. This is achieved by opening up a ‘corridor to the waterfront and implementing a new urban design fabric that is simple and of the place in terms of materiality and highlighting the historical significance of the town in the highlands. 12

Fire was really important for my stay in the cabin. Along with all the practical elements of fire which provide warmth light and embers to cook upon, It gave my trip a sense of perminance, indipendance, helped me relax and prolonged my stay.

Gathering the research and information at the start of the project was a natural process and linked in seemlessly with the working title for the Perth Art stratagy THINK IMAGINE REFLECT. We took these words quite literaly and these words then formed our working methodology. In Order to get a real understanding what these words meant in the context of Perth I decided to spend two days in Perth. I had no preconception of what Perthshire looked like so I bought an OS map to give me a sense of orientation. I picked a piont on the map that look like it had good potential for a camping spot in the grounds of Scone Palace on te river bank of the Tay. I was more than lucky to find a fishing hut with a wood burning stove, cooking uttencills and a great view of the river.

My tools for recording information and possesions for the trip included a Canon 400D DSLR, dictaphone, sketch book, OS map of Perth & Kinross, Sleeping bag, Roll mat, Bike and pannier, Rucksack, 1 large portion of Nocci and spare clothes. This was enough for me to carry out my analysis and live on for two days.

This image again illustrates the importance of the fire. The cabin became warm and hospitable enabling me to relax and reflect over the sites I had seen that day. I suprising did not feel alone. It was refreshing to have time to my self without the pressure of having to be somwhere at a certain time doing a certain thing. My thoughts that evening were clear and without anxiety. I was in a meditative state.

Think, Imagine and Reflect are solitary actions - actions that are predominantly confined to the mind. Traditionally to think, a person is alone, reflecting upon the environment and space in which they are in. These actions cannot be forced, these actions can however be aided by providing a space that encourages thought and reflection, spaces that are a window to the wider landscape. From solitude thought and reflection are born, from this comes imagination, the next step is dialogue. As people we want to share our thoughts, for them to remain inside our heads is not enough, we feel the need for extension.

Plettenburg - Lenne Prominade was my first competition with Loidl. The project outline was to regenerate a cycle/ footpath that ran east-west through the town of Plettenburg parallel to the bank of the River Lenne. The City council requested in a planning document that the design should include a public square that extends onto the waters edge thus improving access and views across the Lenne valley. The brief also stated the need for a playground that should be situated at a point along the new promenade. The way the competition team approached the design was first to understand the size and scale of the project. It was important not to over estimate the design scope and produce a design that was beyond the scope of the city. It was also a priority throughout the design process to protect and even enhance the existing character of the riparian edge along the footpath.

PARK AM LOKDEPOT // BERLIN The public square ‘Platz am Lokdepot’ is situated below Monumenten Brücke on the grounds of the former GDR railway network that connects with Park am Gleisdreieck to the North. The overall masterplan is concerned with reuse of the old railway network to connect a series of parks together. Platz am Lokdepot is to be one of them. The model was assembled in direct relation to the head designer ’s plans. The model is simple and clean, clearly showing the intentions of the design.

The main focus of the Kleiner Keil project was to re-establish an old dock that had once been connected to the city of Kiel by a body of water that served as a shipping canal. The City of Keil put a large emphasis on the engineering of the new canal and the construction of the concrete basin that will retain a body of water. The basin would be a combination of fresh and saline water that would be circulated via pump. My task was to draw and render the sections of these technical details. The sections were sent to an engineer who fine tuned our proposal.

I joined the Benjamin Franklin Project in Mannheim from the initial conceptual development phase that was comprised from seven themed strategies each with a different concept i.e.; village, Islands, agriculture, Landscape character external and landscape character internal. These strategies aimed to display potential for varied density character and user-ship. Once the strategies had been finalised it was then my task to model and photograph each variation from an aerial perspective and render the photo‘s in Photoshop adding the surrounding context and surface textures. The result was a conceptual and atmospheric ‘luftbild‘

JENA RATHAUS PLATZ // JENA I was given a detailed design brief by the Berlin City Council for a project based in Jena, South-East Germany. The competition outline was for the design of a new town-hall square in the city’s oldest quarter dating back to the 13th century. I began the design process by first addressing the existing haphazard street materials consisting of a mixture of asphalt, cobble stones and block paving into a more uniform, cohesive arrangement. This then followed with the design of the town-hall square that I detailed. I oriented the square to the 13th Century town-hall and gave the building a new prominence by changing the grain of the ground plane leading up to the entrance. I used LED floor lights to highlight the interesting sandstone brick work and Querkus rober to link the design to a nearby ‘Oak Square‘. The product was two A1 sheets with masterplan, section, visualisation and diagrams explaining the site analysis.

FINAL YEAR GROUP WORK // PLASZÓW KRAKÓW The 5 x 5 project is in many ways an individual’s active expression in a collaborative group work. The site history and context motivated 5 x 5 to explore alternative means of analysis. The Holocaust is something in which everybody reacts differently to. Therefore one analysis technique simply could not apply to the scale of the past events at Plaszow. We agreed as a group that the our understanding of the site should come from the site and not be imposed from an outsider ’s perspective (tourists). For this particular style of analysis we decided we needed a toolset in which to survey the site. We favoured the analytical style of Vogt Landscape Architects, in particular a book by them called ‘Distance and Engagement’. Vogt explains how walking and documenting an experience of place was essential to grasping the historical scale and context of a site. It felt appropriate a similar analytical style should be adopted for the 5 x 5 group. We needed to cover every aspect of the site history and context of topography, hydrology, vegetation, flora and fauna from the ground up. Simply one tool was not enough for this approach. This is how the 5 x 5 concept emerged. In order to be thorough at ground level we decided to adopt a grid system that would enable us to interrogate and explore indepth a one 5 x 5 metre square area of the site at a time. We combined traditional landscape analysis techniques such as sketching and painting note taking, and measuring with film making also utilising the capabilities of the iPhone GPS applications. Another precedent for the group work was the work of Edward Burtynsky, a Canadian landscape photographer and film maker. In particular a film by him called ‘Manufactured Landscapes’ made in 2006. The film is a silent documentary displaying large format scenes of huge scale industry and mass production. The film is a powerful silent comment of the immense scale of industry and human waste. In a similar way we wanted to capture and grasp the scale of the site from the air. We achieved this with helium balloons, fishing wire and a GoPro 2 camera. 43

The viewing platform was a concept realised in the group work stage. The aerial GoPro camera footage from the Liban Quarry site picked up a great sense of vertigo as the image glides to and fro over the quarry rim. The process of filming also embedded this sensation. This mixed with an epic panoramic view across the quarry became a strong concept for the viewing platform. The platform and ramp was also a pragmatic design decision to link the quarry rim to the floor and make the whole area more permeable and easier to access from the Swoszowicka pathway leading North to South through the site. 51

The Plaszow site has protruding limestone cliffs and boulders. Walking through this part of the site and through the nature reserve in the south-west gave me the inspiration to intersect these interesting rock formations with a new path structure. Cutting through the top surface of the rock will reveal the geology to park users and produce sufficient aggregate to create a new path surface.

The diving centre platform is a modular construction to accommodate multifunctional use such as; scuba diving, kayaking, natural swimming and other water play activities. The platform is constructed from 500x500mm interlocking flotation cubes injected with a low density foam. The cubes with their simple interlocking design enable a flexibility of form. This particular design has an optional hardwood deck that sits on the interlocking cubes for grip and stability. The Kayak ‘seal launch’ is a ramp with rollers that is built into the construction of the platform. This system provides kayaks with a smooth entrance into the water.

The climbing centre outer glass structure is constructed from photosensitive glass that changes in opacity according to light conditions. The viewing platform is bolted onto the climbing centre frame. It gives the illusion of a floating structure.

The sport climb boulder is a freestanding structure that may be altered depending on the climbing function.

The frame support structure is constructed from steel girders. The quarry cliff is drilled and fixings are fixed into the cliff to create an anchor for the frame.

DISSERTATION // LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURAL MODEL MAKING

Architectural modeling has been an interest of mine throughout my Landscape Architecture Ba (Hons) Msc degree. I have discovered that through modeling I am able to articulate and communicate my ideas most effectively. When making a model I am able to comprehend complex spatial information of a design that I may overlook with a 2D media. It was through my own model making progression that I began to break down the question of why the modeling process has such prominent effect on a designer ’s thought process. This study aims to understand how and in what ways landscape architecture students use a variety of model types as a three-dimensional tool, in order that they may comprehend complex spatial aspects of their design and working process. Though there are texts on the subject of pedagogy in model making in the architectural educational environment, there is a distinct lack of research into the way landscape architecture students make models.

Portfolio 2011-2017 // A Note Of Thanks

A NOTE OF THANKS

I am extremely grateful to my friends and family who kept me going through the hardest points during my final year at Edinburgh. They have been the force behind the work displayed throughout this portfolio, of which I am now so proud to present. Thank you.
