About I am a third year architecture student currently studying at Edinburgh University. I have a passion for architecture which has only grown during my studies. Continually I find myself fascinated by the details of architecture, material, light and texture and how we as architects can manipulate these to as components of form and space. Being originally from the Carribean I feel as though I have been travelling all my life, and this may explain my love of seeing and experiencing new spaces. Photography and sculpting are also pastimes that I enjoy, as further outlets for my creativity.

Back to the Future: Edinburgh 2.0 Studio Project . 3rd Year
- ‘And the more constraining the demands of architecture become, the tougher architecture has to respond. Till it breaks.’ Wolf Prix This highly conceptual brief required the merger of two disparate environments: the city of Edinburgh in the mid-19th Century with the uber-modern of Sci-Fi and Fantasy worlds. Within the project the aim was to engage with the quotidien of the environment, whilst deploying the logic of a specific film. As such the film becomes rule and logic, offering potential for the introdution of narrative. The Tron Series was used as the framework with its fetishisation of ‘electrical’ power and complex leadership structure it has a convenient similarity to Edinburgh in the mid 19th Century, which was at that time undergoing an industrial revolution. The site is located in a high density urban district which, though comprising of a significant amount of residential use, is dominated by industrial use: namely the printworks of W& R Chambers.

Our Group sought to engage with the printworks and create a network, or circumscribed grouping.

2nd Iteration Model
In order to re-interpret 1850 Edinburgh and acquaint ourselves with the aesthetic qualities of Tron we carried out several investigations of modelling the site, both physically and through computer rendering. Initially found materials were utilised as a means of conveying the ever flowing energy: computer cabling, motors, wires etc. However we noted that the crudeness of expression jarred with the minimalistic, precise aesthetic visible in Tron. Render Test for 2nd Iteration 5
As a result we turned to more refined materials (acrylics, metals and plastics) to provide a grounding for the found objects.

Conceptual Collage Section 1:200, Advocates Close
The conceptual section above was used as a means of exploring the Concept transformative process, from the 19th century reality to theSection Tron (1:200 at 25000x841) aesthetic. Narrative has been introduced here; characters, materials and tokens from the cinematographic world into the Edinburgh framework. The elevation (left) relates to the latter part of the project where after studying the pre-existing site network, I sought to add and weave in an additional network. The cranes here act as a means of sourcing and collecting rag from the city draperies and relocating the material to the ‘depot’ at Advocates close

‘The home should be a treasure chest of living’ - Le Corbusier
The brief required the design of a residential complex of 30 units, in central Edinburgh. Key to the project was the notion communal space and the types of urban dweller that would seek to use this development. The development is comprised of on block of mainly townhouse style residencies and another of smaller single and two bedroom flats, above these are larger apartments with views across the city. The two units act as a form of gate, funneling the community between the streets they sit between. The hard landscaping also offers the potential for chance meeting and stopping points. By varying the unit type throughout the scheme it was intended that a greater community cohesion would emerge. Roof Plan

‘Every touch, every join, every joint is there in order to reinforce the idea of the quiet presence of the work’ - Peter Zumthor
The brief here required an interpretation of the female form as a replacement for the Dhruva Mistry’s piece which was ‘formerly’ erected there. In order to convey similar sensibilities I felt it neccessary to include a clear sensuousness to the figure. It was also a key concern that there was seen to be an interaction with the water and the figure, which would in turn carry notions of child-like innocence and the frailty of the subject.
Back Detail
It was necessary to pair down the form until the anthropomorphic qualities were barely visible, this was in order to make the form a signifier for the general female form.

‘A large collective space where fragmented humanity can reconstitute itself, that process involves the reuniting of a collective population’ -Rem Koolhaas
The brief required the design of a medium sized library on an allocated site within the metropolitan area of Madrid, this library is to cater for the local needs and hence provide a broad range of communityservices. The library must facilitate varied; private study, child’s play and social interactions. The site is located in close proximity to the Mendez Alvaro, a main artery to the city centre and takes the form of an urban infill site. Initial site analysis suggested a lack of facility for those living in close proximity to the site. As such the library had to serve as a main community hub also. Within the first part of the project I examined circulation as a means of journeying and discovery, and creation of unfolding space.s.

In the final iteration unfolding spaces are played out symbiotically with a notion of integrated community: creating a library programme which, as one explores, makes clear its inherent links to community. As a means of engagement, first it defers to it, connecting with the localized city block. The mass is then orientated so that it gives priority of access to the neighbourhood it serves, dismissing the high speed service route to its rear. Then a key moment occurs the mass is separated into two supported by two infrastructural columns containing all services, and circulation. The ground mass deals with the threshold experience for the more distant resident, whilst containing the majority of lending services. The elevated mass is dedicated to study in various forms, whilst from the exterior it serves to create a mark upon the city. The void space forms part of a public forum, a direct extension of garden space of some adjacent residences. This space offers the potential for chance meetings and interaction with neighbours - a gap in the pervading privacy of the surrounding area for communal entertainment and performance.
