System: the underlining grid that determines form form. Without system, order cannot exist. It is from this order that we compose all that which affects us. Deviating from systems is what creates the sublime. Beauty is seen in what is normally mundane. Details emerge in the most unlikely of places. Moments exist in matters that suggest otherwise. Circumstances that are trite now become unique and unknown. It is because of these unknowns that deviation becomes a necessity. It is in this way that the body or system becomes unnecessary and the unknown a priority. Deviation is critical for systems to be whole.

CORE DESIGN PORTFOLIO - CORE DESIGN 1 C - FORM & SPACE
The human occupancy of a space is essentially a three-step process that can manifest itself in only one particular order: arrival, habitation, and departure. Each of these phases dictate the experience generated within (and nearby) a space and are inherently associated with certain emotions. - Arrival – The impact felt, visually or otherwise, on first contact with site/space (whether known or unknown). - Habitation – The accessibility and occupancy of space; how you engage it. Movement within. Time. - Departure – The exit from space and the last contact with site/space (whether known or unknown). A continuation of occupation – memory. The arrival to this space does not occur at its façade, but at first glance. Seeing the space from a distance, the potential occupier is engaged by a curious scheme of rigor (the axis; structural framework) supporting a non-rigorous system of spaces – a dramatically tilted mass puncturing robust shapes. Curiosity breeds contempt. Contempt breeds investigation. Once within, the occupier is led throughout with the common purpose of accessing the center core. A quadruple-height space from which all other systems originate; the answer to the mystery upon arrival. Departure is merely a continuation of the occupation. The center core is felt, upon having reached it, now everywhere within the space as it drops down in space to encourage withdrawal. The occupier is now permanently effected by the space without say. This is the personal moment within: the memory of space within a person.

The Morgan Museum & Library, located in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, houses a lavish collection of rare and original masterworks collected over a span of 100 years. Unlike most museums and libraries who display finished products, the most significant portion of the Morgan collection is dedicated to the massive amount of notes and process-work that precede them. The Morgan Museum & Library Annex, located adjacent to the High Line in Manhattan’s Chelsea District, celebrates the spirit of the collection through a series of vaults and chambers infused with the rich history (both old and new) of the High Line. Vault – Preservation and Restoration of the Morgan Collection: For the Morgan Annex, the lone vault is at once, its most secure yet exposed space. Located on the basement floor and elevated on rails, the “box-within-a-box” holds the most precious works in the collection. Resistant to UV light, the vault space is often made aware ceremoniously to the public by a horizontal sliding panel embedded in the ground. For exhibition, guests of the museum are circulated down and around the vault and its contiguous restoration suites, highlighting the preservation and restoration of these rare and delicate masterworks. For special events, the vault can be withdrawn via rail to the interior of the basement floor, leaving an open event space. Chambers – Observation, Investigation, and Reflection: In blunt contrast to the vault space, chambers exist in both contextual and spacial variance within the Morgan Annex. Chambers are inherently more fluid spaces, beginning as observation spaces and terminating as reflection spaces, evolving as circulation moves upwards. The first chambers (Observation Spaces) are the primary galleries for the Morgan Annex. They include the High Line level, the Mezzanine, the 4th & the 5th
floors. Second-stage chambers (Investigation Spaces) include the Primary Reading Room and the Children’s Reading Room with accompanying librarian suites.
