With the GOP’s majority in the Texas House on the line and Democrats within striking distance of flipping the chamber for the first time in nearly two decades, the stakes of this general election are huge. Credit: Eddie Gaspar/The Texas Tribune In the dozen seats freshman Democrats were defending, Republicans seemed poised to regain control of one in Harris County: Former GOP state Rep. Mike Schofield ousted state Rep. Gina Calanni, the Katy Democrat who unseated him in 2018. Meanwhile, most Republican incumbents in races targeted by Democrats were leading in early vote returns. In Tarrant County, three — Matt Krause of Fort Worth, Craig Goldman of Fort Worth and Tony Tinderholt of Arlington — were leading their opponents by several percentage points. In Collin County, Matt Shaheen and Jeff Leach, both of Plano, had narrow leads over their challengers. A notable exception was the Houston-area contest for a seat held for 10 years by Republican state Rep. Sarah Davis. Davis conceded the race to her Democratic challenger, Ann Johnson, on Twitter Wednesday morning. Vote returns showed Johnson leading by more than four percentage points Wednesday. And in Dallas, two Republicans were trying to

hold off tight challenges. State Rep. Morgan Meyer held a lead of fewer than 2 percentage points over Democrat Joanna Cattanach, who conceded the race on Twitter Wednesday morning. And fellow state Rep. Angie Chen Button was leading Democrat Brandy Chambers by just over 200 votes. Republicans also led in four open-seat contests that Democrats had hoped to flip this cycle in their quest for gaining a majority in the House. Republicans Jeff Cason and David Cook were ahead in their contests, both in Tarrant County, against Democrats Jeff Whitfield and Joe Drago, respectively. And in Harris County, Republican Lacey Hull maintained a narrow lead over Democrat Akilah Bacy, who conceded the race Wednesday morning. In Fort Bend County, Republican Jacey Jetton was ahead of Democrat L. Sarah DeMerchant by just under 3,000 votes late Tuesday night. Democrats had hoped to flip the seat currently held by Republican state Rep. Rick Miller. In the Texas Senate, most incumbents coasted to reelection, with the exception of state Sen.

Pete Flores, R-Pleasanton, who appeared to have lost to state Rep. Roland Gutierrez, D-San Antonio, after winning the seat in a 2018 special election in a historically Democratic district. Flores, the first Hispanic Republican to serve in the Texas Senate, was down by a margin of 3 percentage points, according to results posted by the Texas Secretary of State. Flores conceded the race Wednesday morning. Before the election, Republicans had 19 seats to the Democrats’ 12. If Flores loses the seat, Republicans will have just 18 votes in the Senate, losing the supermajority they need to bring bills up for debate under Senate rules. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who in 2015 oversaw lowering the long-standing 21-vote threshold down to 19, said in January the Senate may further reduce that threshold to 16. It takes a simple majority to change the rule, which has allowed Patrick’s Senate to steamroll Democrats while bringing up a host of conservative priorities for consideration. “All I’m saying is that if we were to be a vote short — and I don’t think we will, but if we were to be — then we would have to look at that because otherwise we would be right back to where we were in history as the majority party ... of having to have a Democrat sign off on every bill,” Patrick said in January. “That doesn’t feel right to me.”

WHICH COMES FIRST

REFINANCE IN BABY STEP 2 Dear Dave, My husband and I are on Baby Step 2, and we’ve paid off about $30,000 in consumer debt since March. We were wondering if we should refinance our mortgage. Our current rate is 4.875%, with 28 years remaining on the loan. We found a 15-year refinance at 2.5%, which would raise our monthly payments about $200, but we can handle that. We have $150,000 in equity in our home and about $207,000 left on the loan. What do you think we should do? Raye Dear Raye, You two have done a great job this year! I’m so proud of what you’ve accomplished and that you’re looking to the future. Baby Step 2 wouldn’t be affected, except that your monthly mortgage

payment will go up a little. I wouldn’t pay the refinance costs out of pocket, though. I’d roll them into the loan. You’d be saving more than 2% by locking in this crazy-low interest rate, and you’re knocking the whole thing down to a 15-year loan. I love all that. It’s definitely worth the extra $200 a month to make it happen. Think about it this way. You’re going to be saving more than $4,000 a year with the interest rate reduction. You’re not going to see it in cash flow because of the $200 increase in monthly payments, but over the scope of the loan, you’re going to be charged between $4,000 and $4,500 less per year for interest. All that money is going toward paying back the closing costs and reducing the principal built

Dear Dave, I just saved up my $1,000 beginner emergency fund, and I’m looking at paying off my car and credit card debt—a total of $3,400—by the end of January. Before I started your plan, I took out a $7,500 student loan to pay for my fall and spring semesters. I still have a year of school left, which will cost about $10,000. Should I save up the money for my final year before attacking my student loan debt, so I don’t have to take out another one, or go ahead and begin paying it off? Emma Dear Emma, Well, it doesn’t make much sense to pay off the current student loan, then turn around and take out another one. Your first goal— after you get the credit cards and car paid off—should be saving cash to finish school. Once you’ve done that, start paying off the student loan. Long story short, you’ve got to stop borrowing money. The idea of saving up to pay for things should

be the default setting in your brain, Emma. Otherwise, you’re going to spend the rest of your life with car payments and other debt hanging around your neck. That’s not being responsible with your money, and it will keep you from saving for stuff that matters and becoming wealthy. Stop. Borrowing. Money. I hope I haven’t been unclear. —Dave * Dave Ramsey is a seven-time #1 national best-selling author, personal finance expert, and host of The Dave Ramsey Show, heard by more than 16 million listeners each week. MICHA LOWE INSURANCE “We’ve got you Covered”

HER BIBLE PROMISE

By: Michael T. “Josh” Fuller

WAY DOWN YONDER IN THE MURDER CENTER OF THE SOUTH

LONG POST ALERT! I was born on a Saturday in 1950. The city I was born in was known for terrific food, a vibrant arts community as well as a bountiful music community. In the fifties and sixties I had free reign over my home town. Let me explain. In the fifties, I wanted to visit my grandmother, I called her MOMO. That name stuck with her through her grand and great grand children. So, how did I get to my grand mother’s house. By taxi, of course. Yep I was no older than seven when my mom put me in a cab to travel 20 minutes to a half hour to go see my beloved grandmother. Remember this was by myself. We certainly didn’t know the Taxi driver. Can you imagine doing that to your child today in 2020? The would probably put the parent under the jail. Fast forward to 1962 or 1963. It was decided that every Saturday I would ride the Airline Highway bus to Metairie Road and go to my Grandmother’s house in New Orleans. She and I would have lunch and after lunch I would hop the bus that would take me to downtown New Orleans to take guitar lessons at Weirlien’s on Canal. After the lessons I would hop the bus again and head home to Metairie. If I had a child, or a teen I would no more let them do that than the man in the moon. In this era of sex trafficking and children vanishing one takes his or her own life in their own hands just going anywhere in New Orleans. Think I am blowing this out of proportion? Lets look at some New Orleans crime stats. According to the website, https://www.areavibes. com/new+orleans-la/ crime/. New Orleans crime rates are 159% higher than the national average Violent crimes in New Orleans are 202% higher than the national average In New Orleans you have a 1 in 16 chance of becoming a victim of crime New Orleans is safer than just 2% of the cities

in the United States Year over year crime in New Orleans has increased by 13%. I read on local news websites of stories of officers being hijacked and killed. This happens not in well known rough spots in New Orleans. This also occurs in normally safe places like Canal Street, Central business district, as well as the Garden District. The big question is why is New Orleans getting worse than better? Let’s compare some crime rates between Dallas, a much larger city and New Orleans. New Orleans crime rates are 159% higher than the national average Violent crimes in New Orleans are 202% higher than the national average In New Orleans you have a 1 in 16 chance of becoming a victim of crime New Orleans is safer than 2% of the cities in the United States Year over year crime in New Orleans has increased by 13%/ Violent Crime /100k Murder /100k, Rape /100k ,Robbery /100k Assault /100k, Property Crime /100k, Burglary /100k ,Theft /100k Vehicle Theft /100k Total Crime /100k NOLA 1,145DFW 31 196 257 661 5,293 543 4,001 748 6,437 New Orleans Crime F 863 15 58 323 467 3,321 676 1,893 752 4,184 In most categories New Orleans has way more crime the Dallas. Now I get into the meat of this weeks column. Dallas, crime is out the wazoo. New Orleans crime continues to explode What do New York, Dallas, New Orleans and other larger cities have in common? All are Democratically controlled. Amazingly, these cities recently went through a most contentious election and I asked myself what is the common link between these cities? All of these cities are Democratically controlled. Remember there is no such thing as a coincidence. According to Wikipedia the top seven United States cities are run by Democrats.

So what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? As I wrote this on election day I was reminded of a axiom that makes ton of sense to me. If you continue to do what you’ve always done, you’ll continue to get what you’ve always gotten. Is it enough? Thank you for reading The Lone Star Shopper. No matter how you cast your ballot, thank you for voting. Have a great week and remember, I’, pulling for you.

Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
