GET DIALED IN Dear Dave, My wife and I have two kids and one on the way. We’re debt-free except for our home, and we
have our emergency fund in place. We’ve also been saving for retirement, with me putting 15% into a 401(k) and her putting 10 percent into her retirement account. On top of all this, we’re putting a little money toward college funds for the kids. We talked the other night, and after that we started thinking about pulling back from retirement saving and getting the house paid off. What do you think about that? Callen Dear Callen, I teach people to start investing 15% of their household income for retirement after they’ve completed Baby Step 3, which is saving three to six months of expenses for an emergency fund. Baby Step 4 would be both of you putting 15% of your income into retirement, and you’re not quite doing that yet. Saving for college comes next in Baby Step 5. I don’t teach people to put less than 15% of their income into retirement in order to pay off the house a little earlier. It’s tempting when you’ve got the debt-free bug, but it’s not the shortest distance between where you are right now and wealth. The average person who follows my plan—the Baby Steps—can pay off their home in about seven years. You’ve got offense and defense to think about,

Have you ever wondered where the term President Elect orginated? This usage of the term -elect originated in the Catholic Church, where bishops were elected but would not take office until ordained. ... By the 19th century, the term had expanded to describe any position in which a substantial period of time elapses between election and installation. The term entered politics with the practice of elective monarchy. For example, the Holy Roman Emperor was elected by a college of prince-electors, but the winning candidate would not become emperor until he was crowned by the pope. Between election and coronation, he was known as the imperator electus, or Emperor-elect. By the 19th century, the term had expanded to describe any position in which a substantial period of time elapses between election and installation. For example, it was common in the 19th century to refer to a fiancée as a bride-elect. The bylaws of some clubs and other organizations may define an official position of president-elect similar to a vice president position. The members of the organization elect the president-elect, rather than directly electing the organization’s president.[1 The president-elect may be given limited duties, similar to a Vice-President. At the end of the term, the president-elect is promoted to the position of president, and a new president-elect is elected. The advantage of this schema is a clear continuity of succession, as well as the opportunity to familiarize the president-elect with the operations of the organization before becoming president. A possible drawback is that once a president-elect has been elected, another person cannot be elected president unless the president-elect resigns or is removed from office The position of president-elect is different from someone who was elected president and is called “president-elect” between the time of
election and the start of the term. For example, if an election for president was held in January, but the term of office does not begin until March, the person who was elected president may be called “president-elect” but does not hold any power until the term begins in March. On the other hand, someone in the position of president-elect has all the powers of that position that the bylaws provide. Similarly, organizations may have other official positions such as vice president-elect, secretary-treasurer-elect, director-elect, and chairelect. Now on to the issue at hand. What about the President Of The United States? The president-elect of the United States is the person who conclusively appears to have won a presidential election in the United States but has yet to take office as President. The president-elect takes office after the oath of office is administered during the presidential inauguration. Here’s something I’ll bet you didn’t know? Sort of a Sheldon Cooper “Fun Fact”. While Election Day is held in early November, the formal voting by the members of the Electoral College takes place in mid-December, and the presidential inauguration is then usually held on January 20. The only constitutional provision pertaining directly to the person who has won the presidential election is their availability to take the oath of office. There is no indication when that person actually becomes president-elect. Since 1963, U.S. federal law has empowered the General Services Administration to determine who the apparent election winner is and to help facilitate the basic functioning of the president-elect’s transition team. By convention, during the period between the election and the inauguration, the president-elect actively prepares to carry out the duties of the office of president and works with the outgoing (or lame duck) president to ensure a smooth handover of all presidential responsibili-
ties. Incumbent presidents who have won re-election for a second term are generally not referred to as presidents-elect as they are already in office and are not waiting to become president. Likewise, if a vice president succeeds to the presidency by way of the president’s death, resignation or removal (via impeachment) from office, that person is not referred to as president-elect as they become president immediately. On the other hand, a sitting vice president who is elected president is referred to as president-elect. One more “fun fact” before I go. Following the 2020 presidential elec-
tion, Joe Biden was declared the president-elect of the United States by media outlets and some prominent Republicans, including former president George W. Bush. This is based on public election results, and his victory is yet to be officially confirmed by the General Services Administration or the deciding vote of the Electoral College.
