Plant A Glorious Garden (NAPS)—If you’re thinking of giving your garden a new look this season, consider some tips from professional garden designers. •Line garden paths with fragrant herbs, such as basil and thyme or form borders with hedges and fences.

•Include some of the flowering trees that bring color to new heights. To help protect tree bark from injury and insects, use new self-gripping VELCRO® brand Tree Wrap. •Use quick-growing trees to provide privacy around a deck or patio. To ensure saplings and young trees grow straight and tall, keep them firmly staked with VELCRO® brand Tree Ties. •Make room for a vegetable garden. Tomatoes, eggplants, snow peas etc. provide color as well as food for the grill. •Use a flower covered trellis, arbor or gazebo for architectural interest. To secure and train flowering vines and stake and protect vegetables and long stemmed flowers, keep VELCRO® Plant Ties on hand.

DAVE SAYS

Pay It Off

Dear Dave, I can’t decide what to do about my car. I owe $8,000 on it, and I have the cash to pay it off with plenty left over. One of my co-workers said I shouldn’t pay it off, because I have a very low interest rate on the loan. What do you think? Derricka Dear Derricka, What do I think? I think your co-worker is broke. Taking financial advice from broke people is like taking dieting advice from fat people. In other words, it’s dumb. Pay off your car, and never borrow money to buy a car again for the rest of your life. If you want to win with money, you have to get out of the land of car payments. The idea that you’re stuck with car payments — that you’re always going to have one — is the mantra of those who’ve given up hope. You are in charge of your life. You are in charge of your financial situation. Don’t be like all those folks out there who whine about stuff like stagnant wages and are unwilling to get up off their

stagnant butts to make their lives better. Derricka, pay off your car today. And please, don’t take any more financial advice from broke people! —Dave

Emergency Fund In Cash

Dear Dave, My wife and I are completely debt-free. We would like to have part of our emergency fund in cash inside a heavy duty safe at home. How should we document this cash in the event of fire or theft? Also, would our homeowners insurance policy cover cash? Will Dear Will, Typically, homeowners insurance policies have a limit as to how much cash they will cover. I’d advise re-reading your policy, and double checking with your insurance agent just to be sure. When it comes to documenting valuables, I’d suggest making a video or taking photographs. Just to be extra cautious, you could store these in a safe deposit box at your local credit union or bank. Having some cash on hand is never a bad

thing. When it comes to the portion of your emergency fund you keep at home, I’d recommend just being reasonable. If you’ve got $10,000 set aside for emergencies, I’m okay with you keeping $5,000 at home in a quality safe. I wouldn’t put all, or even most of it, in a safe, though. Again, just make sure your homeowners policy covers anything you might put in there. A strong, fireproof safe is a must! —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. I

In Praise Of Reader’s Digest

don’t claim to be the sharpest tool in the shed, I do however like to claim that I can at times be very clever. In the 1950’s when I started school, I was lacking in my reading ability. My first grade teacher, God bless her, made me stay after school for six weeks to catch up on my reading skills. Now a lot of parents and kids would be embarrassed to admit that they weren’t ready for first grade reading, however, it was indeed a blessing in disguise. That simple step lit a fire under me to learn. It ignited a life long love of reading. After staying after school for six weeks, I discovered Freddy The Pig, I think I read all twenty two of the Freddy the pig series within two years. The books by Walter R. Brooks woke up my imagination and let me see the world in a bigger, better light. Not too long after learning how to read I discovered all of the popular comic books of the day. Most of them funny, some not too serious. I even discovered

Illustrated Classics. I read the count Of Monty Cristo and The Three Musketeers. Not too long after that I found Readers Digest. I found I liked most of their articles and I remember liking all of the jokes. I also liked their ability to share vocabulary words. I had a hard time in school, however I looked forward to pouring over Reader’s Digest. I honestly believe that my education was mainly because of the Reader’s Digest and Associated Press wire service copy. Because I had poured over copies of Reader’s Digest, I was able to be trained as a radio announcer. It gave me the ability to comprehend complex issues going on in Vietnam and in Washington DC. Later on I did go to Midwestern State University for a couple of courses and it was there I found out I was a reluctant writer and that is why I call this

column the Accidental Publisher. I can’t praise the merits of Reader’s Digest enough. Great articles and issues about things that have happened in real life. I also appreciate their clean approach to humor and all of their departments that make the publication such a joy to read. It’s like I told my sister the retired school teacher. A person who doesn’t read is no better off than a person who can’t read. I’ve said all of this just to remind parents to take time to read to their children. Take a trip to your local library. I honestly believe I out grew a learning disability. If you think a child in your life has a learning disability, have that child tested. Today so much can be done for children Learning disabilities are neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/ or math. They can also interfere with higher level skills such as organization, time planning, abstract reasoning, long or short term memory and attention. I want you to make sure any children you come in contact with are up to speed to learn. Thank you for reading The Lone Star Shop-

6 Key Character Traits of People Who Win with Money by Rachel Cruze

Meet the Smith family. Both parents work, and they make good money. From the outside, life looks good — a new Tahoe, a big house, and private schools for the kids. But in reality, the Smiths are barely scraping by. With the help of credit cards and car loans, they spend more money than they make, and they’re just one financial emergency away from being in serious trouble.

One parent works, and makes decent money, while the other stays at home and takes care of the kids. The Williams family lives on a budget, and even though they still have a lot of student loan debt, they’ve cut the balance in half during the last two years. They have a small emergency fund saved, and they expect to be out of debt completely in two years. So, what do you think is the difference between the Smiths and the Williamses? Why is one family able to pay off thousands of dollars in debt on a tight budget, while another family barely gets by week after week? Why does one person succeed with money, while another person struggles? There are dozens of factors, but, many times, it comes down to these key characteristics. They’re patient. People who win with money are patient. They can delay a short-term pleasure for a longterm gain. In other words, they can walk right by the shoe section without blinking. They know $100 shoes would be nice, but they have higher priorities. That’s because they understand the bigger picture. It’s about retirement and college funds and that beach vacation they’re dreaming about. Believe me, I love the shoe section. But when I stop and pick up a pair of designer shoes in a store, I ask myself if we’ve budgeted for this and if buying that pair of shoes effect our priorities. They’re confident. When you’re in control of your money, you’re confident. You also don’t care when other people look down their noses at you, because
