Make Power Tool Safety Part of Your Remodeling Plan (Family Features) When it’s time to take on a new project, both DIY-inclined homeowners and contractors alike must consider many components to successfully complete the task, from design plans and materials to the proper tools needed. For simple projects like installing new light fixtures as well as more complicated projects such as refurbishing an outdated bathroom, power tools can be helpful throughout the process. Once all the items on the checklist are accounted for and there’s a plan in place, the next step to consider is an important one: safety. While obvious concepts like electrical safety are typically followed without hesitation, some crucial details don’t receive the same caution, such as safe handling of batteries. Many cordless power tools use lithium-ion batteries for improved efficiency, energy storage capacity, durability, versatility and portability, but they need to be handled properly. Prior to operating a battery-powered tool, consider these tips from the experts at the Power Tool Institute, a leading voice on power tool safety issues and standards for the industry. Selection and Use: •Lithium-ion batteries pack more energy than prior technologies, which means they can do more work, but there’s also greater potential for damage when misused. •Batteries are not interchangeable, so it’s important to only use batteries and chargers from the original power tool manufacturer. •Original manufacturer batteries are engineered to communicate and work with specific tools and chargers. These components, as a system, also go through a

rigorous certification and testing process – a requirement that doesn’t typically apply to third-party batteries. •Substandard aftermarket and counterfeit batteries may come with additional hazards that result in fire, property damage or personal injury. •If a battery is damaged, do not use it. •Never immerse your tool, battery pack or charger in fluid or allow a fluid to enter it, including corrosive or conductive fluids, such as seawater, certain industrial chemicals and bleach or products containing bleach. Fluid entry can increase the chances of short-circuiting, which comes with risks of overheating, fire or explosion that can lead to personal injury and property damage. Transportation and Disposal: •Always transport and store lithium-ion batteries as instructed in the owner’s manual. •Avoid contact with metal objects, such as keys, coins, screws, nails and liquids. •When disposing a lithium-ion battery, take it to a local recycling center or place it in a receptacle designed for batteries. Throwing it away in the trash or municipal recycling can cause a fire hazard. Photo courtesy of Getty Images # 14510 Source: Power Tool Institute

I

In Praise Of Reader’s Digest

don’t claim to be the sharpest tool in the shed, I do however like to claim that I can at times be very clever. In the 1950’s when I started school, I was lacking in my reading ability. My first grade teacher, God bless her, made me stay after school for six weeks to catch up on my reading skills. Now a lot of parents and kids would be embarrassed to admit that they weren’t ready for first grade reading, however, it was indeed a blessing in disguise. That simple step lit a fire under me to learn. It ignited a life long love of reading. After staying after school for six weeks, I discovered Freddy The Pig, I think I read all twenty two of the Freddy the pig series within two years. The books by Walter R. Brooks woke up my imagination and let me see the world in a bigger, better light. Not too long after learning how to read I discovered all of the popular comic books of the day. Most of them funny, some not too serious. I even discovered

Illustrated Classics. I read the count Of Monty Cristo and The Three Musketeers. Not too long after that I found Readers Digest. I found I liked most of their articles and I remember liking all of the jokes. I also liked their ability to share vocabulary words. I had a hard time in school, however I looked forward to pouring over Reader’s Digest. I honestly believe that my education was mainly because of the Reader’s Digest and Associated Press wire service copy. Because I had poured over copies of Reader’s Digest, I was able to be trained as a radio announcer. It gave me the ability to comprehend complex issues going on in Vietnam and in Washington DC. Later on I did go to Midwestern State University for a couple of courses and it was there I found out I was a reluctant writer and that is why I call this

column the Accidental Publisher. I can’t praise the merits of Reader’s Digest enough. Great articles and issues about things that have happened in real life. I also appreciate their clean approach to humor and all of their departments that make the publication such a joy to read. It’s like I told my sister the retired school teacher. A person who doesn’t read is no better off than a person who can’t read. I’ve said all of this just to remind parents to take time to read to their children. Take a trip to your local library. I honestly believe I out grew a learning disability. If you think a child in your life has a learning disability, have that child tested. Today so much can be done for children Learning disabilities are neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/ or math. They can also interfere with higher level skills such as organization, time planning, abstract reasoning, long or short term memory and attention. I want you to make sure any children you come in contact with are up to speed to learn. Thank you for reading The Lone Star Shop-
