I could pay for school with cash, but that would delay buying a home. My parents have offered to help out financially, so do you think I should accept their offer? Isaac Dear Isaac, I don’t have a problem with this, if they’re doing well enough financially to afford it, and the help comes in the form of a gift. If they’re borrowing the money to make it happen, then the answer is “no.” If they want to loan you the money, the answer is “no.” A loan between family members, or even friends, isn’t help— it’s a trap for both parties. But hey, if they’re in good enough shape to gift you some money to help with the MBA or a home, that would be an incredibly generous thing to do. I think it’s so cool when people work hard, make smart decisions, and manage their money
well to the point they can do things like this for others. It sounds like you’re in a really good place, Isaac. Pay cash for school, and if you can’t buy a home outright when the time comes, make a down payment of at least 20 percent. We have no debt, except for our home, and we owe about $70,000 on it. Should we cash out the stock, and use the money for an emergency fund? Nate Dear Nate, Yes, that’s what I would do. Basically, your emergency fund is in stock right now.
That’s not a good place to keep an emergency fund, because you never know when life will throw unexpected expenses your way or the stock market will go down. I would cash out that stock as soon as possible. Put the money in a simple money market account—one with check writing privileges and no penalties for early withdrawals. You always want your emergency fund to be safe and easily accessible. Then, make sure you keep pushing forward and take care of Baby Step 4, investing for retirement; Baby Step 5, save money for college if you have young children; and Baby Step 6, pay off your home early. Missing The Southwest Conference Part Two
Last Week I reminisced about bring the Southwest Conference back for college football lovers. I had a talk with long time friend Paul Keane and he brought me back down to earth, Paul,is a native Texan and today is owner, operator of the Wayne County News. Paul set me straight. He reminded me 1.) UT and A&M aren’t going to agree to play a non-conference game against one another early in the season. 2.) The only way you could make it work would be to have the two teams play at the end of the season, just like Florida-Florida State or Clemson-South Carolina do. Paul fuirther explained Neither team is going to agree to that because of conference championship games the following week, plus the SEC and Big 12 would both have to totally reconfigure conference schedules, thereby af-
fecting all of the schools in each conference. Paul reminded me to remember the ultimate axiom Money, Money, Money. A&M last year earned roughly $90 million as their share from the SEC. That’s on top of what they earned on their own. The revenue sharing plan in the SEC is second to known, and with the SEC Network now pouring tons of cash into the conference to be divided up among its members, you’ll never pull A&M out of the SEC. Plus, UT doesn’t share in any of the revenue from the Longhorn Network, instead keeping it all to themselves. That was a major sticking point a few years ago when Oklahoma and Oklahoma State threatened to pull out of the Big 12. UT being stubborn and not wanting to have revenue sharing is what broke up the SWC and I’m afraid that it will keep it from reforming again. Seems a shame, it’s a

5 Tips for Coping with Chronic Pain (Family Features) Pain can impact nearly every aspect of your daily life from cleaning the house to going to work or playing with your kids. In fact, according to the Institute of Medicine, 100 million Americans, or more than 30 percent of the population of the United States, suffer from chronic pain, which is pain lasting 3-6 months or longer. Most often, chronic pain is treated using prescription opioids. However, the National Institutes of Health estimates 2 million people in the U.S. suffer from substance use disorders related to prescription pain relievers, while 60 people die every day as a result of opioid overdoses, according to the National Safety Council. "The country is facing intertwined crises of opioid misuse and chronic pain management. Non-opioid, non-pharmacological treatments such as acupuncture and other similar interventions can be essential in handling patients' pain management as a complement to lessen dependency on opioid prescriptions and serve as a more effective holistic therapy for chronic pain," said Dr. Kory Ward-Cook, chief executive officer of the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). "The care provided by NCCAOM National Board-Certified Acupuncturists is essential in continuing the movement toward greater integrative and
complementary pain care, especially as a non-pharmaceutical alternative to harmful opioid prescriptions." To help treat your pain with a non-opioid solution, consider these tips: Set Goals for Yourself Setting realistic, measurable goals that focus on functional health and quality of life is essential to managing chronic pain. Outline specific, measurable goals you hope to achieve, such as exercising for 30 minutes three days a week or cleaning at least one room in the house twice a week and track your progress toward reaching them. Use Relaxation Techniques There are a variety of techniques, including meditation and deep breathing, that can help your body relax by slowing breathing, lowering blood pressure and instilling feelings of well-being. Giving your muscles a chance to relax can release tension, which may ease pain. Practicing yoga or tai chi, which involve a series of physical postures in addition to breathing and relaxation techniques, may also help reduce pain. Consider Non-Pharmaceutical Treatment Options With concerns mounting about the prevalence of opioid use and abuse in the U.S., complementary, natural treatments such as acupuncture can help alleviate pain and reduce the number of opioids prescribed. Using practices derived from traditional Chinese medicine,
acupuncturists stimulate specific points on the body, most often by inserting thin needles through the skin. For example, National Board-Certified Acupuncturists, whose credentials can be verified through the NCCAOM, are affirmed to have the education and training necessary to competently deliver acupuncture services. Focus on Nutrition A well-balanced diet is vital to overall health and well-being and can also influence chronic pain. As food choices can increase or decrease inflammation, which leads to many chronic diseases, consider a diet low in sugar and carbohydrates that includes fresh, organic fruits and vegetables; lean, grass-fed meats; legumes; nuts; whole grains; and organic dairy products. Keep Track of Progress To effectively manage and treat your pain, consider keeping a journal to note your pain level on a scale of 1-10 each day. Also track your activity during the day - including time on your feet, exercise and even sitting at your desk - so you can identify patterns based on what you do and how you feel afterward. Then use the connections you've made to modify your environment and schedule as necessary.
