Dear Dave, I’m on Baby Step 1 of your plan, and I work at a community college that takes a mandatory 20 percent from our pay for retirement. I know you say retirement contributions should be put on hold until all debt except for your home is paid off, so do you have any thoughts on this kind of system? It feels like it’s hard to get traction with getting control of my money when so much is being taken out of every paycheck. Kristi Dear Kristi, That is a lot to take out. I’ve heard of a few places that have a mandatory 12 percent contribution, but 20 percent? That’s very unusual. And it’s unusually high. I’m not sure what to tell you. I mean, you took the job. It’s what you signed up for. But if it becomes enough of an issue with your finances, you may have to decide at some point if you still want to work there. My recommendation is to begin setting aside 15 percent of your income for retirement after you’ve paid off all debt except your home, and you have
three to six months of expenses in the bank. At least you’re not losing the money, so it’s not the end of the world. It’s your money that’s going in there for your use some day. I don’t know the exact structure of the retirement account, but it is going toward retirement savings of some kind—and that’s important! —Dave RETURN OF PREMIUM? Dear Dave, I’m thinking about signing up for a return of premium life insurance policy. It costs more per month than other policies, but it allows you to get all your money back after 30 years assuming you live that long. Is this too good to be true? Tommy Dear Tommy, It’s not too good to be true, but it is a rip off. Never buy a return of premium life insurance policy. You said it costs more than other policies, right? Well, if you were to take that extra money you’d be paying and put it into a good mutual fund, you’d get all the cost of
your policy back after 30 years 100 percent of the time. Return of premium policies are just a gimmick. When it comes to life insurance, always go with a good, 15- to 20year level term policy. Accidential Publisher WHERE ARE THE FLYING CARS?
It’s hard to believe that in two years there will be two decades of the new MILLENNIUM in the record books. I recall thinking that it was time to have one of the most anticipated predictions to come true. We all wondered if the flying cars were just around the proverbial corner. Nearly two decades later we are still without the flying cars. However Uber is gearing up a novel approach to transportation in North Texas. According to an article published on the Texas Tribune’s website and as I heard recently on the radio, Uber has picked Dallas, Fort Worth as test cities for a flying vehicle network The company also tapped a Dallas real estate development firm and Fort Worth’s Bell Helicopter to develop pick-up and drop-off sites for electric vehicles that would take-off and land vertically. Uber hopes to have the first demonstration of how such a network of flying, hailed vehicles would work in three years. Uber is also working
with Dallas’ Hillwood Properties to plan vertiports, sites where the aircraft would pick up and drop off passengers. Fort Worth’s Bell Helicopter is among companies partnering with Uber to help develop the actual vehicles, called VTOLs because they would vertically take off and land. The announcement was made at a three-day Uber Elevate Summit being held in Dallas. “This is an opportunity for our city to show leaders from around the world and across industries why Dallas should be a part of building a better future for urban mobility,” Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said in a prepared statement. Uber’s ambitious plans comes as the company experienced fast revenue growth but $2.8 billion in losses last year. Tuesday’s announcements also comes on the heels of a series of scandals at Uber, including several of its top executives exiting the company in fast succession and amid an ongoing internal investigation into sexual harassment claims. Uber also faced widespread customer backlash ear-
lier this year for a decision to keep operating at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City amid a taxicab boycott in response to President Trump’s initial travel ban. And it follows just days after the New York Times reported that Uber had previously “been secretly identifying and tagging iPhones even after its app had been deleted and the devices erased a fraud detection maneuver that violated Apple’s privacy guidelines.” Meanwhile The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Bell is developing propulsion technology to build electric airborne vehicles “that are quieter than the usual helicopter.” “It’s not going to happen right away, tomorrow, but the technology is definitely there,” Bell chief executive Mitch Snyder told the newspaper. “We definitely believe the hybrid electric is something we could go make and fly right now. But I think full electric, to give it the range and everything you want out of it, is not quite there.” Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price said in a prepared statement that she is “thrilled” her city is part of the Elevate initiative. “Being in the North Texas region, which en-

High Tech publication Fast Company reported that Uber is portraying Elevate as “a cheap alternative to building new roads and expanding public transit” but noted
that Rawlings maintains Dallas has to provide as many transportation options as possible. “Anytime there’s innovation in the marketplace, I don’t think anybody truly knows the results of these things, or the costs,” Rawlings told Fast Company. “We’ve got to be multimodal there’s no question in this city.”
