DAVE SAYS DO WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU
Dear Dave, I’ll be graduating from college with no debt in a couple of weeks, and I have a good job waiting for me in January. During the last few years, I’ve managed to save almost $25,000 from my part-time jobs while in school. My car is pretty beaten up and old, so I’ve been shopping at a couple of car dealerships recently. Every time I talk to a salesperson, they tell me I should finance something new instead of paying cash for a used car. What should I do? Ethan Dear Ethan, I hope you’ll keep one very important thing in mind. This is your purchase, not theirs. The only reason they want you to finance something is so they’ll make a lot more money off the deal. Forget what they want. You need to do what’s best for you. You’ve been a hard-working, smart guy over the last few years. The fact that you’ve been able to save nearly $25,000 is proof of that. I don’t think you want to throw a big chunk of your savings—or your
new income—into something that’s going to go down in value like a rock. New cars lose about 60 percent of their value during the first four years of ownership. That means a $28,000 car would be worth around $11,000 after that period. That’s not a smart investment. If I were you, I’d shop around and pay cash for a nice, slightly used $10,000 car. You can get a great automobile for that kind of money, plus you’ll still have the majority of your savings. Congratulations, young man. You’ve done a great job! —Dave Retirement Contributions Dear Dave, As part of your Baby Steps plan, you always advise people to put 15 percent of their income toward retirement. Would you explain the details of this, please? Mallory Dear Mallory, For starters, Baby Step 4 of my plan involves saving 15 percent of your gross annual pay for retirement. You don’t have to be a complete nerd about this figure. I
mean, you probably won’t end up in the poor house if you set aside 12 to 14 percent. The bottom line is you should be able to save $7,500 a year if you make $50,000 annually. That’s just a little over $600 a month. However, the only way you can do this is by giving up stupid things like credit cards and car payments. When you get out of debt, it’s easy to set aside an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses— which is Baby Step 3—and start throwing 15 percent at retirement during Baby Step 4. Did you know you can retire a millionaire if you save 15 percent of a $50,000 a year income, and invest it in good growth stock mutual funds starting at age 30? Sounds worth it to me! —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 14 million listeners each week on 600 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. Follow Dave on the web at daveramsey.com and on Twitter at @DaveRamsey

(NAPS)—When you think of wild rice, you probably think of Native Americans and birch-bark canoes, but think again. California is a significant producer of wild rice and has been for over 20 years. In fact, California makes up over half of the U.S. production of wild rice, boasting some 10.5 million pounds of the gourmet grain finished product produced last year. Wild rice in California is harvested with state-of-the-art equipment, unlike the hand-harvested methods still in use in some areas today. It is high quality, convenient, easy to prepare and versatile. Low in fat, sweetly nutty and deliciously chewy, California grown wild rice is a natural in one of this season’s most popular dishes—salads. Check out the following elegant example. The striking black and cream-colored grains are tossed with a tangy dressing and three more stars of California’s springtime bounty— asparagus, snow peas and spring mix. Paired with juicy herbed chicken breasts, this is a lovely salad for a bridal shower, luncheon or patio supper. California Wild Rice And Chicken Salad Dressing 6 tablespoons white wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon minced shallots 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard Salt Salad 1 ⁄2 cup walnut halves 2 cups chicken broth 2 cups dry white wine 1 cup (8 oz.) California wild rice 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (13⁄4 to 2 lb. total) 1 ⁄2 cup reduced-fat sour cream 1 tablespoon minced fresh tarragon
1 tablespoon minced fresh chives 1 ⁄2 pound asparagus, cut into 2-inch pieces 1 ⁄4 pound snow peas, strings removed, halved 1 ⁄4 pound spring mix or other lettuce torn into bite-size pieces For the dressing, whisk together vinegar, oil, sugar, shallots, mustard, and salt to taste until smooth. Set aside or, if making ahead, cover and chill up to 2 days. Stir well before using. Place walnuts in a small frying pan over medium-high heat. Shake or stir often until nuts are toasted, about 5 minutes. Pour from pan and set aside. (Nuts may be toasted up to 1 day ahead. Store airtight until serving time). In a 3- to 4quart pan, combine broth and wine. Bring to a boil over high heat. Add wild rice, reduce heat, cover, and simmer until tender, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Uncover and boil off any remaining liquid. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. (Rice may be cooked up to 1 day ahead.
Cover and chill until ready to use). Place chicken in a 9- by 13inch baking pan. Stir together sour cream, tarragon, and chives. Spread mixture evenly over chicken. Bake in a 350° oven until chicken is no longer pink in thickest part (cut to test), about 25 minutes. While chicken bakes, bring about 2 quarts of water to a boil in a 4- to 5-quart pan over high heat. Add asparagus and snow peas; cook just until they turn bright green, about 1 minute. Drain and immediately rinse vegetables in cold water until cool. Drain well. In a large bowl, combine wild rice, asparagus, snow peas, and spring mix. Add dressing and mix well. Divide salad among 4 serving plates. Cut chicken diagonally into slices and arrange next to salad. Garnish with toasted walnuts. Makes 4 servings. Missing The Southwest Conference
Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about the Southwest Conference and honestly I don’t know why, except in Texas it rated right up there with tom Landry, Texas Stadium, the Alamo and other Iconic things of my adopted home state. When I arrived in Texas for good in 1977 the SWC was the crown jewel of college sports. No other conference had the prestige, or the talent of the SWC. I thought I was the only one longing for the return of the SWC, but it seems a State Lawmaker has Filed A Bill To Require an Annual Football Game Between UT And Texas A&M. According to an article by the Texas Tribune, state Rep. Lyle Larson, a San Antonio Republican who earned a bachelor’s degree from A&M, filed House Bill 412, which would require the two teams to “play a non-conference, regular-season football game against one another on the fourth Thursday, Friday, or Saturday of November each year.” UT-Austin and A&M have played each other more than 100 times. But the annual game ceased when A&M moved to the Southeastern Conference. The last game was in 2011. “We owe it to Texans
to do all we are able to bring back this storied rivalry,” Larson said in a released statement. “It’s time for the folks in Austin and College Station to get in a room and make a deal to restore the rivalry.” As filed, Larson’s HB 412 would also dock a university from awarding athletic scholarships or “similar financial assistance funded by state funds” should it choose to not participate in the football game. Larson isn’t the first state lawmaker to push for the two teams to resume the rivalry. In 2013, another A&M graduate — state Rep. Ryan Guillen, a Rio Grande City Democrat — filed similar legislation. The bill was referred to a House committee, though it never received a hearing. Recently I was listening to WBAP when host Chris Salcedo opened a proverbial can of worms when he proceeded to tell Texans it is not governments job to legislate which Texas college teams play. Salcedo is a veteran broadcaster, author and a political analyst. He’s on WBAP NewsTalk 820AM from 9am – 11am every weekday morning. I am not a native Texan, however my heart is with Texas. I’ve spent time all over the state and I love the culture, the history
and the sense of fair play Texans have. In case you don’t know about the SWC, it was Established 1914 and was Dissolved 1996.It was a Association NCAA Division Division I Subdivision N C A A Division I-A Members 8 (final), 13 (total) Former names included Southwest Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It was Headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The Southwest Conference (SWC) was an NCAA Division I college athletic conference in the United States that existed from 1914 to 1996. Composed primarily of schools from Texas, at various times the conference included schools from Oklahoma and Arkansas as well. For most of its history, the core members of the conference were Texas-based schools plus one in Arkansas: Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M University, Texas Christian University, Baylor University, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Texas. After a long period of stability, Arkansas left in 1991 to join the Southeastern Conference. Five years later, the conference precipitously broke up as Baylor, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech (which had entered in 1956) combined with the members of the former Big Eight Conference to form a new powerhouse, the Big 12 Conference, while Rice, SMU, TCU, and Houston found homes in less

prominent conferences (although TCU later joined the Big 12). Wouldn’t it be grand just to wave a magic wand and make the SWC reappear out of thin air! Old rivalries could be renewed and part of Texas sports history would be preserved. But alas and alack, I’m afraid the SWC has gone
the way of Texas Stadium, Tom Landry’s hat, and Larry Mc Mutry’s Last Picture show. Maybe, just maybe, somebody somewhere has some video of SWC matchups we could stream to get our collective SWC fix with. It’s an idea worth revisiting don’t you think? Chris, I agree with you
less government is best, but let’s bring back the SWC.

5 Tips for Coping with Chronic Pain (Family Features) Pain can impact nearly every aspect of your daily life from cleaning the house to going to work or playing with your kids. In fact, according to the Institute of Medicine, 100 million Americans, or more than 30 percent of the population of the United States, suffer from chronic pain, which is pain lasting 3-6 months or longer. Most often, chronic pain is treated using prescription opioids. However, the National Institutes of Health estimates 2 million people in the U.S. suffer from substance use disorders related to prescription pain relievers, while 60 people die every day as a result of opioid overdoses, according to the National Safety Council. "The country is facing intertwined crises of opioid misuse and chronic pain management. Non-opioid, non-pharmacological treatments such
as acupuncture and other similar interventions can be essential in handling patients' pain management as a complement to lessen dependency on opioid prescriptions and serve as a more effective holistic therapy for chronic pain," said Dr. Kory Ward-Cook, chief executive officer of the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). "The care provided by NCCAOM National Board-Certified Acupuncturists is essential in continuing the movement toward greater integrative and complementary pain care, especially as a non-pharmaceutical alternative to harmful opioid prescriptions." To help treat your pain with a non-opioid solution, consider these tips: Set Goals for Yourself Setting realistic, measurable goals that focus on functional health and quality of
life is essential to managing chronic pain. Outline specific, measurable goals you hope to achieve, such as exercising for 30 minutes three days a week or cleaning at least one room in the house twice a week and track your progress toward reaching them. Use Relaxation Techniques There are a variety of techniques, including meditation and deep breathing, that can help your body relax by slowing breathing, lowering blood pressure and instilling feelings of well-being. Giving your muscles a chance to relax can release tension, which may ease pain. Practicing yoga or tai chi, which involve a series of physical postures in addition to breathing and relaxation techniques, may also help reduce pain. Consider Non-Pharmaceutical Treatment Options With concerns mounting about the prevalence of opioid use and abuse in the U.S., complementa-

ry, natural treatments such as acupuncture can help alleviate pain and reduce the number of opioids prescribed. Using practices derived from traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncturists stimulate specific points on the body, most often by inserting thin needles through the skin. For example, National Board-Certified Acupuncturists, whose credentials can be verified through the NCCAOM, are affirmed to have the education and training necessary to competently deliver acupuncture services. To learn more about how acupuncture can
help with pain management or addiction, or to find a practitioner in your area, visit nccaom.org. Focus on Nutrition A well-balanced diet is vital to overall health and well-being and can also influence chronic pain. As food choices can increase or decrease inflammation, which leads to many chronic diseases, consider a diet low in sugar and carbohydrates that includes fresh, organic fruits and vegetables; lean, grass-fed meats; legumes; nuts; whole grains; and organic dairy products. Keep Track of Progress
To effectively manage and treat your pain, consider keeping a journal to note your pain level on a scale of 1-10 each day. Also track your activity during the day - including time on your feet, exercise and even sitting at your desk - so you can identify patterns based on what you do and how you feel afterward. Then use the connections you've made to modify your environment and schedule as necessary.
