AUSTIN – When Rebecca Grimes sets the table during the holiday season, there’s always a missing piece. Nearly four decades ago in 1982, a drunk driver killed her brother, 18-year-old José “Hector” Martinez, in a head-on crash just before

Thanksgiving. The holidays have never been the same since then. “Even 30 years since Hector’s crash, we still feel that one empty chair at the table during the holidays,” Rebecca Grimes said. “Drunk drivers affect so many

people beyond just those who are in the crash. They have a domino effect — crushing multiple families — and the impact lingers for years, decades beyond the crash.” Grimes is sharing her story as part of TxDOT’s “Plan While You Can” campaign which urges drivers to make a plan for a sober ride this holiday season. “Just don’t drink and drive, and don’t risk putting your family or someone else’s through heartache this holiday season,” Grimes said. In 2018, there were 2,370 DUI-alcohol related crashes in Texas during the holiday season.* Those crashes killed 75 people and seriously injured another 199. “The bad decision to

drink and drive can turn the joy and revelry of the season into tragedy, causing unimaginable heartache for years to come,” TxDOT Executive Director James Bass said. “There’s no excuse: plan ahead and be responsible.” The “Plan While You Can” campaign will tour the state featuring the “Plan to Win” virtual reality game. The game poses questions related to drinking and driving demonstrating the consequences of getting behind the wheel through an immersive experience. Driving under the influence of alcohol not only risks death or serious injuries, but it can also be costly. Drivers can face up to $17,000 in fines

and fees, jail time and loss of their driver’s license. Instead of getting behind

t h e wheel, here are some alternative options: Designating a sober driver or calling someone for a ride home Calling a cab or rideshare service Using mass transit Spending the night “Plan While You Can” is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers

to make safer choices while behind the wheel, like wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit and never driving after drinking or doing drugs. Dear Leland, Let’s put off investing for the time being. You’ve done a great job so far by getting on a budget and saving $1,000. Making mature decisions and telling your money where to go, instead of wondering where it went, is the key to gaining control of your finances. Now, let’s take a closer look at my plan and where you stand. You’ve already set aside $1,000 for a beginner emergency fund. That’s Baby Step 1. Don’t touch that money except in the event of an actual emergency. You’re ready now for Baby Step 2, which is to pay off all debt except for your mortgage using the debt snowball system. To do this, make a list of your debts from smallest to largest. Make minimum payments on all but the smallest debt, and attack it with a vengeance. As soon as you get that one paid off, move on to the next one and then the next one. Once you finish the debt snowball, and you’re debt-free except for your house, you go back to your emergency fund and stash more money away until you have a fully-fund-

ed emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. This is Baby Step 3. Now you can begin concentrating on investing for retirement, which is Baby Step 4. Start with your employer’s 401(k) plan. Then, you can invest the rest into Roth IRAs—one for you, and one for your spouse—if you’re married. Saving and investing are both very important. But it’s also important to become debt-free. That’s what makes them easy! —Dave

They can’t afford life insurance at this point, and they also have a lot of debt. When they die, who will be liable for their debt? If they have a positive net worth—meaning they owned more than they owed—there will be money left over after the debts are paid, and this could go toward an inheritance. If they have a negative net worth, which means they owed more than they owned, everything could be sold off to cover as much of the debt as possible. Regardless, you would only be held liable for any of

their debt if you were a co-signer on the loans. I’d also suggest getting their permission to buy burial policies on them. I want to take a moment to announce my reelection for Van Zandt Constable Pct.1. I was elected in 2009 on the Republican ticket thanks in part to Obama. I have served the citizens for going on twelve years. I waited this long to announce because several things had to fall in place. I wanted to know I could continue to serve you the people without any questions. I have had one issue with my heart rate in 2015 where a pacemaker was put in place. I still have the same drive I had when first elected to serve. I was granted a basic Peace office license in 1990. In 2008 I ran for Van Zandt constable Pct 1 my opponent was a good friend and still is to this day. I have advanced my position to a Master Peace Officer. In my twelve years we have continued to serve you 24 hours a day seven days a week. WE have four Deputy Constables that work 20 hours a month. They furnish their own vehicle along with gas. The deputy's patrol many miles and one deputy work an average of 100 hours a month. We not only serve papers and bailiff our court we work our own criminal cases and make numerous arrest if needed.
