Developing a Soil Fertility Program
By: Tommy Phillips County Extension Agent Agriculture & Natural Resources Van Zandt County Forage production is the key to all livestock operations. A good fertility program is the first step at growing forages for beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses or hay production. In our East Texas soils, one must get the right nutrients in the right ratio combined with rainfall to grow forages. Over the last 5-6 years, producers have cut back on the needed soil nutrients that fertilizer supplies due to the cost of fuel, fertilizer itself and the drought. In doing this, we have seen a decline in the overall health and sustainability of our grazing pastures and hay meadows. Nutrient application rates will be based on the results of a soil analysis. Select only those materials recommended for use by qualified individuals from Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Texas AgriLife Experiment Station, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Soils Lab, certified crop advisors or others connected with an accredited testing laboratory. Soil testing is the foundation of a sound nutrient management program. A soil test is a series of chemical analyses that determine the levels of essential plant nutrients in the soil. When not taken up by a crop, some nutrients, particularly nitrogen, can be lost from the soil by leaching, runoff or mineralization. Others, like phosphorus, react with soil minerals over time to form compounds that are not
available for uptake by plants. Soil testing can be used to estimate how much loss has occurred and to predict which nutrient(s) and how much of that nutrient(s) should be added to the soil to produce a particular crop and yield. Take soil tests at least every two years or at the beginning of a different cropping rotation. I recommend the following practices to develop a good nutrient management plan: 1. Soil test for nutrient status and pH to: determine the amounts of additional nutrients needed to reach designated yield goals, and the amount of lime neededto correct soil acidity (ph) problems optimize farm income by avoiding excessive fertilization and reducing nutrient losses by leaching and runoff; and identify other yield-limiting factors such as high levels of salts or sodium that may affect soil structure, infiltration rates, surface runoff and, ultimately, groundwater quality. 2. Base fertilizer applications on: · soil test results · realistic yield goals and moisture prospects · crop nutrient requirements · past fertilization practices · previous cropping history 3. Manage low soil pH by liming according to the soil test to: · reduce soil acidity · improve fertilizer use efficiency -pH below 5.5 can actual “tie up” nutrients making them unavailable to plants- thus wasting money. · improve decomposition of crop residues-
Page 3
· enhance the effectiveness of certain soil applied herbicides 4. Time nitrogen applications to: · correspond closely with crop uptake patterns · increase nutrient use efficiency · minimize leaching and runoff losses 5. Use animal manures and organic materials: · when available and economically feasible most manures are readily available and inexpensive, however the freight charge can make them unfeasible. · to improve soil tilth, water-holding capacity and soil structures - our sandy soils in most of Van Zandt county have very limited water holding capacity. · to recycle nutrients and reduce the need for commercial inorganic fertilizers 6. Use legumes where they are adapted: · replace part or all of crop needs for commercial N fertilizer · reduce erosion and nutrient losses · maintain residue cover on the soil surface Soil sample kits from Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin are available at the County Extension office. Results take 10-14 days to return at which time, you can schedule an appointment with me to work out a long term forage fertility program. You can reach the Van Zandt County Extension office at (903) 567-4149 or at http://vanzandt. agrilife.org

A LITTLE SOUL CLEANSING IN ORDER
This is the last political column for while. Make no mistake, I voted for Donald J. Trump not once, but twice. We had no way of knowing the outcome of the actions of a few-people who were determined to break into the Capitol of The United States. Make no mistake, I never condone violence, it is an unacceptable action. If you can’t get a outcome that you like in the ballot box, suck it up buttercup and hope for a stronger candidate next time. Were all of the people who rushed the Capital, Trump supporters? Not likely, however, were they mostly Antifa, or BLM activists? It’s possible, but we can’t prove either argument. Now, on to other parts of this last God Awful Presidential Election. Was there fraud? Maybe, maybe not, however, I’ve been saying that there is one thing that political pundits have ignored. I have been saying that demographics have changed. How severe was the shift? Consider this. This is the first time that millennials have been able to vote in a Presidential election. Why is this significant? The younger voters, are in it for one thing and one thing only. WHAT’S IN
IT FOR ME? Younger voters have been snookered. They think their college debt will be eradicated. Just this morning I heard that Democrats have put the brakes on that program. Poof, another one bites the dust? Let’s keep our eyes on that. I think I want to start a scoreboard to see how many political promises get buried. Is the GOP dead? Possibly, why you ask? Another report indicates that the GOP is going to divorce themselves from Trump? The report indicates that if that happens 70% of the GOP rank and file will leave. Will that kill the GOP? I suppose it could. The bigger question is where will these voters go? Will they become Libertarian? Or perhaps many will join the independent party. Either way, the conservative movement will be dead in the water for quite some time. What I fear most is many who voted for the first time will never vote again. These people feel like “What’s the point of voting, my vote never counted anyway.” It’s terrible to feel disenfranchised, but to be a first time voter, and feel like your vote does not count is a travesty our
constitution can’t stand. How do we move on from here. All I am going to do is this. I am moving away from conservative talk radio, at least for a while. I have tuned into a station called the Gospel Station and I have found great peace in my life. As of last Wednesday, Impeachment proceedings were continuing. Citing Trump’s role in inciting “a massive violent invasion of the United States Capitol” on Jan. 6, the day the president had summoned his supporters to Washington to protest the certification of the Electoral College vote formalizing President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, the resolution, introduced by Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., passed by a largely party line vote of 223-205. One Republican, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, was the only lawmaker to break ranks. The resolution asked Pence “to immediately use his powers under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to convene and mobilize the principal officers of the executive departments in the Cabinet to declare what is obvious to a horrified Nation: That the President is unable to successfully discharge the duties and powers of his office.” Yet even as the House was in the process of voting on whether to proceed with the resolution,
www.lsshopper.com • 903-865-7002 Pence released a letter that he had sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stating that he would not invoke the 25th Amendment to seek to remove Trump from office. I do not believe that such a course of action is in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with our Constitution,” Pence said in the letter, adding that invoking the amendment “would set a terrible precedent.” We are supposed to be that shining star on a hill, however, we are right now considered, nothing more than a mud puddle. Right now, I’m going back to my Gospel Music, so I can clear my mind. As always, thank you for reading the Lone Star Shopper. Have a great Week, and remember I’m Pullin’ for ya!

DO SOME OF ALL THREE AND ENJOY THE RIDE
Dear Dave, I was talking to a friend the other day, and I couldn’t remember what you said about the three good uses for money and why each is important. Would you go over them again? Albert Dear Albert, I’ve been doing this for a lot of years, and after all that time studying finance and teaching people about money, I can still find only three good uses for money— spending, saving, and giving. You should be doing all three while you’re working your way out of debt and towards wealth, and after you become wealthy. The kid in us likes the spending part of this equation, because it’s so much fun. The problem with most people is they can’t really afford the fun they have. You should have some fun no matter where you are on the financial scale, but it should be inexpensive fun in the beginning. Then, the fun can get bigger, better, and more frequent once you’re out of debt and building wealth. The grown-up part of us likes investing and saving, because that’s what can prepare you for retirement and make you wealthy. After a while, though, in-
vesting can feel a little bit like Monopoly. You can be up, or you can be down. Sometimes the market fluctuates, but a mature investor will ride out the waves and stay in for the longterm. If you have quality investments with long track records of success, they will come back up. Start investing 15% of your income for retirement once you’ve paid off all debt except for your home and you have three to six months of expenses saved for an emergency fund. The most mature part of you will meet the kid inside when you give. Giving is the most fun you’ll ever have with money. Every financially, mentally, and spiritually healthy person I’ve ever met has been turned on by giving. I’ve met and talked with thousands of millionaires in my career, and one thing all the healthy ones have in common is a love of giving. Someone who never has fun with money misses the point. Someone who never saves or invests money will never have any. And someone who never gives is holding on too tight. Do some of each, and enjoy the ride! —Dave!

Keeping kids safe on the farm is a year-round priority
By Jennifer Dorsett Field Editor Farm child safety is more important than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Scott Heiberger, communications manager for National Farm Medicine Center. “Most of the country, when people go to work, they go to their offices. They leave their home. But when it comes to agriculture, a lot of times the work site is also the home. And so from that standpoint, of course, the safety factor continues, whether it was prior to COVID-19 or after COVID-19,” Heiberger said in an interview with Texas Farm Bureau Radio Network. “But now it is such an extreme situation, and families are spread so thin. With kids home more, it is an opportunity for them to help out more, especially during the peak spring and fall seasons. Not having kids in activities or school might give you some hours to do some of the more hazardous jobs. We have to recognize the realities.” National Farm Medicine Center can help families manage their children’s safety on the farm. To assist in the shortterm, Heiberger said the organization created a “Children’s Center” on the website, pulling to-
gether all child-related safety resources. “There we have our have our ag youth work guidelines to help parents assign jobs to kids based on developmental ability to make sure the child is matched to the job,” Heiberger said. For younger children and especially those under the age of six, the center stresses the importance of a safe play area with a barrier to keep kids away from hazardous conditions. National Farm Medicine Center also plans to collect data to assist in advocacy efforts on policy and legislative issues. “Maybe we can get
Wrap Up some more help as far as rural childcare and have more of a plan for that,” Heiberger said. “Because if we’re asking this farm population to feed the world, it would be nice if we could also help them out and maybe give some real solutions as far as childcare.” Heiberger noted the National Farm Medicine Center recently received a grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to help improve child farm safety. “We have some longer-term projects looking at childcare in rural areas and ATV operation, and something
called the Farm Kid Paradox, where we look at not only the hazardous things about growing up on a farm, but we try to quantify and get into some kind of data form the positive aspects of growing up on a farm, like building a good work ethic and responsibility,” he said. “We’re excited to try to put some data on there, so that we can be better advocates for farm families. So, when we’re trying to get better childcare in rural areas, and we’re maybe trying to inform policy on ATV operation, we’ll have some actual numbers that we can share.”
