Make Room for New Favorites on the Grill
Page 5
(Family Features) Whether firing up the grill for a pool party, barbecue or even just a weeknight meal, one thing's for sure: summertime means grilling season. Grilling takes many forms and flavors from casual favorites like burgers and hot dogs to flame-kissed vegetables and the artistry of a perfectly done steak. However, the possibilities don't end there. By mixing and matching traditional grilled classics with options that have a variety of textures and flavors, you can shake up your at-home menu and add new favorites to your routine this grilling season. One ingredient to consider adding to your repertoire is Mrs. T's Pierogies, which are available in 14 flavors. They're stuffed with creamy mashed potatoes, cheesy goodness and other big, bold flavors, and you can grill them right alongside your favorite barbecue fare. Consider these tips from grilling expert Susie Bulloch of "Hey Grill Hey" to add some new sizzle to your grill this summer by using pierogies. * Use good cooking oil to create a crispy exterior. Olive, avocado or canola oil can handle the heat of the grill. * Try two-zone cooking. Start by cooking on the low-temperature side of the grill (known as indirect cooking) to slowly heat from frozen. Then move to the hot side of the grill (direct) to add a crisp texture and achieve a golden brown exterior. * Add layers of texture. With a soft interior and crispy exterior, pierogies pair well with juicy, chewy protein and a flavorful sauce, enhancing their texture and flavors. You can create these layers with a recipe like Grilled Pierogies with Steak and Chimichurri. * Don't be afraid of color. Grilled to golden brown with aesthetic grill marks, you can add an extra crunch and boost of flavor. Find more grilling recipes and ideas at mrstspierogies.com. Grilled Pierogies with Steak and Chimichurri Recipe courtesy of Susie Bulloch of "Hey Grill Hey" Pierogies: 1 package Mrs. T's Classic Onion Pierogies 1-2 tablespoons olive oil Tri-Tip Steak: 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 tri-tip steak (2-3 pounds) Chimichurri Sauce: 1 cup fresh Italian parsley, packed 1/4 cup fresh cilantro 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/3 cup red wine vinegar 3-4 garlic cloves, peeled 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper To prepare Pierogies: Toss pierogies in olive oil. To prepare Tri-Tip Steak: In small bowl, combine salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder; season steak on all sides. To make Chimichurri Sauce: In food processor, pulse parsley, cilantro, olive oil, vinegar, garlic, red pepper, salt and black pepper until well combined but small pieces of herbs remain. Pour into serving bowl, cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Heat grill to 400 F for two-zone cooking. Grill steak over direct heat 3-4 minutes per side. After flipping steak, place pierogies over indirect heat. Close grill lid and cook 3-4 minutes. Move steak to indirect heat and move pierogies to direct heat. Remove from grill when pierogies are golden brown and steak is cooked to preferred doneness. Allow steak to rest before slicing. Layer one pierogy, one slice steak and drizzle of chimichurri sauce to assemble each bite. #14779 Source: Mrs. T's Pierogies

DAVE SAYS A COURSE IN DAY TRADING
Dear Dave, I was recently offered an opportunity to participate in a hands-on stock trading class. The problem is we don’t have the $6,500 registration fee just lying around. My husband and I are on Baby Step 4 of your plan, so what would you think about us borrowing that amount from our emergency fund? We would still have three months of expenses set aside after paying for the class. Camille Dear Camille, I don’t know the exact course you’re talking about, but I do know something about the concept of buying and selling stocks, or day trading, if you want to call it that. I can tell you all the research shows 78 to 84 percent of day traders lose money. And one hundred percent think they won’t be the ones losing out. That includes people who take courses like the one you mentioned. I have found no data points which show, on a consistent level across a broad population, that people who take a course like that become wealthy as a result. Buying and selling single stocks is an ultra-high-risk propo-
sition. That’s why I don’t buy any single stocks. Now, I know some people who buy and sell single stocks as a very small percentage of their financial world. It’s almost YOU DON’T FAKE POOR Dear Dave, I’ve got a couple of friends who were advised by their financial planners not to open college savings accounts for their kids. Their planners told them this would count against their children’s ability to receive financial aid and assistance when it’s time for college. Apparently, these planners told them to put the money into their own retirement accounts. It’s my understanding, however, that both the child’s and the parent’s financial situations are looked into when determining financial aid. Can you please shed some light on this? Jeanette Dear Jeanette, So, if a financial planner told you not to get a job because then you can apply for welfare, are you going to listen to that person? What kind of moron gives financial advice like this? You don’t tell people not to save money for some-
thing, just so they can pretend they’re poor! Save whatever money you can, and send your kid to school. Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp? People need to stop looking for tricks and shortcuts, because there aren’t any that will be beneficial in the long run. I’m not going to pose as broke— fraudulently—to get financial aid for my kid. That’s ridiculous! I hope I wasn’t unclear. —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. Korean War Women (NAPSA)—During the Korean War, women in the Armed Services went from being a footnote in history to a source of labor and skills for the nation’s military. The United States found itself once again involved in a war, only a few years after the end of the second World War. The military rushed to call up, draft and recruit manpower. When it came up short, the services asked American women to leave their homes, jobs and families to serve their country.

The Korean War gave servicewomen new career opportunities outside of the usual clerical and administrative services. When President Harry S. Truman ordered U.S. air and naval forces into Korea, women in the armed services numbered 22,000. Roughly 7,000 of these women were health care professionals. The rest served in line assignments in all branches of the military. Although nurses and medical specialists were the only military women allowed into the combat theater throughout most of the war, women serving stateside were assigned to a variety of nontraditional jobs including military policeman, parachute rigger, pharmacist and engineer. These women volunteered to serve their country at a difficult time. They should be remembered and commended for their patriotism and personal sacrifices.

Uniting Beauty And Health Under One Roof by Kim Aster (NAPSA)—As the emotional and physical benefits of spa treatments are recognized and even endorsed by healthcare professionals, “medical spas” are popping up across the country. What sets these spas apart from the rest is access to dermatologists’ and/or plastic surgeons’ services in the same pampering environment in which traditional spa treatments are offered. Taking this trend to the next level, the Beyond day spa in Northern New Jersey bridges the gap between beauty and health. Located within the renowned Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), the spa features top estheticians who work in collaboration with some of the nation’s most trusted physicians to offer cutting-edge treatments in a serene, Zen-like environment. “The benefits of creating a spa within a medical center are endless,” explains Doreen Santora, vice president of operations at HUMC. “Women can schedule a morning massage and manicure and an afternoon mammography. Likewise, men can schedule a relaxing sports massage and a routine prostate exam in the same breath.” Adding to the synergy between h e a l t h a n d b e a u t y, s p a s l i k e Beyond offer access to doctors who offer Botox, Collagen, Sclerotherapy, and other dermatology and plastic surgery services. Catering to hospital staff who deal with needy patients throughout their day, visitors who become stressed and in pain from standing by loved ones who are hurting, people who have appointments at the medical center, and the community at large, the spa aims to boost the spirits of the stressed out while soothing their physical aches and pains.
