Sit down, and teach him how to make a written budget by figuring out the upcoming month’s income and expenses ahead of time. Also, make sure he knows how to properly balance and reconcile his bank account. It’s still your responsibility to provide him with the basic necessities at this point. But I love your willingness to teach your son how to handle money intelligently. I know part of the problem is grabbing quick meals between extra shifts, and eating out a lot after work, because I’m usually too tired to cook when I get home. How can someone who has very little free time start gaining control of their finances? Sheila Dear Sheila, No matter how little free time you think you have, or how tired you are, you must make time do a written budget every month. This is essential. Making a budget for the month ahead isn’t a lot of hard work, and it really doesn’t take long. When you give every dollar a name before the month begins, you’re taking control of your money instead of allowing a lack of it to control you. Start with the income you know is predictable. If that isn’t possible, look back over the last few months and find the minimum amount you brought home during a month over that period of time. This will be the basis for your budget. Once you’ve established a baseline income, you can write down and prioritize bills and other expenses. Just remember, restaurants are not a priority!

Stay Awake To Stay Alive Presented As a Public Service By The Lone Star Shopper
Distracted driving is an ever-increasing problem. With extra attention being focused on the use of cellphones behind the wheel, one distraction has managed to comfortably slide beneath our radar: fatigue. While most people believe that driving tired is relatively harmless, statistics show that a lot of the behaviours exhibited by drunk drivers are the same as those displayed by motorists who don’t sleep enough, yet still get behind the wheel. Surveys have shown that an alarming proportion of drivers admit to having fallen asleep at the wheel at least once in their driving careers. It’s important to make sure that you get enough sleep before you get into the driver’s seat of your car. If you don’t, you’re a danger to not only yourself but also those in your car and others on the road. So remember, cellphones aren’t your only distraction next time you find yourself out on the road. Stay awake and stay alert. Studies have shown that drivers who stay awake for just 17 hours straight exhibit the same driving mistakes as someone with a BAC of 0.05%. Drivers who were awake for 21 consecutive hours showed the same mistakes as someone with a BAC of 0.08%. In a 2007 survey done by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, 14.5% of participants revealed that they had fallen asleep at the wheel at least once in the last year. Every year, thousands of Americans die in car accidents. With people speeding, driving recklessly and constantly looking at their cellphones, our country’s roads have become one of the most dangerous places we could possibly be. But cellphones aren’t the only thing that can cause distractions while you’re behind the wheel of a car. Anything that takes your eyes off the road, even for a second, is a distraction that could prove deadly for you and anyone else who happens to be riding in your car. Here’s what you can do to stay focused next time you’re out on the road: • Store loose objects before driving. • Finish all personal grooming before getting in the car (combing hair, applying lipstick, tying a tie, etc.). • Avoid eating. • Don’t drive while drowsy. • Avoid complex conversations. • NEVER use your cellphone.
