IRS enhances Get My Payment online application to help taxpayers WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service has announced significant enhancements to the “Get My Payment” tool to deliver an improved and smoother experience for Americans eligible to receive Economic Impact Payments. The enhancements, which started last week and continued through

the weekend, adjusted several items related to the online tool, which debuted on April 15. The additional changes will help millions of additional taxpayers with new or expanded information and access to adding direct deposit information. “We delivered Get My Payment with new capabilities that did not exist

during any similar relief program, including the ability to receive direct deposit information that accelerates payments to millions of people,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “These further enhancements will help even more taxpayers. We urge people who haven’t received a payment date yet to visit Get My Payment again for the latest information. IRS teams worked long hours to deliver Get My Payment in record time, and we will continue to make improvements to help Americans.” “We encourage people to check back in and visit Get My Payment,” Rettig added. “These enhancements will help many taxpayers. By using Get My Payment now, more people will be able to get payments quickly by being able to add direct deposit information.”

These Are The Times That Try Men’s Mental Health!

At the beginning of this year, you would not convince me that by the end of March many people would be very ill from a virus that nobody knows how it got started. Even worse, there are multitudes of theories, some logical and some not so much. These theories range from mild to wild. some make no sense and some well. these options make me want to go out and look for little green men. Suposedly these beings would visit us from other galaxies far, far away. I like the description of one post on Facebook that the storyline was now being written by a precocious fourth grader. I’m convinced life is being written by a 4th grader even now. “And there was this virus, and everyone was scared. And then the world ran out of toilet paper. And then there was no school for like a month and then time went backward and spring changed to winter, then it snowed!! And the world had to close until everyone felt better. So they told everyone they could smoke weed and they all lived happily ever after.” I know that sounds like a bad twilight zone episode but a lot of people are scratching their heads and are wonder-

ing, What’s Next? I don’t know what to think, but I do have a few suggestions for you. I know it sounds trite and trivial, but washing your hands in warm soapy water is best. Don’t forget to use ample amounts of sanitizer. What about social distancing. Keep your distance six to ten people apart is preferable. Don’t forget to avoid big groups. Speaking of big groups, grocery shopping is not a family affair. It’s time to install a rule. ONE TO A BUGGY! Another thing about this virus and your family’s needs don’t hoard. It’s just not a nice thing to do. It makes no sense to hoard. As tempting as it is to believe anything and everything on the internet, check your sources and don’t rush to conclusions. Listen to local media for important information about your locale.

www.lsshopper.com • 903-865-7002

Your city officials including your police and fire department are wonderful sources to find out what is happening in your neighborhood. Right above that is your County Judge and Commissioners. You can call your local County Courthouse for information. At the State Capitol Call them on the phone or email them and the internet is our friend. If you don’t have web access then ask to borrow a neighbors WI-FI, Keep tuned to a local news radio station and check with your local television stations several times a day. Local newspapers and online news sources may be great spots to look for information. During these trying times. I like to remind others, It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice. Have patience and we truly will get through this in no time with a shrug of the shoulders and a hearty well I’m glad that’s over.

BE PROFESSIONAL AND RESPECTFUL

Dear Dave, I’ve always made good money at my job, but recently I was offered a promotion to a salaried manager’s position. The hours and pay would be much better, and I already know the approximate pay range. Do you have any tips for negotiating salary in a situation like this? Natalie Dear Natalie, Congratulations on your move up! I’m sure you worked hard and deserve

the promotion and recognition. There are a couple of measuring sticks you can use when determining something like this. One is a quick and simple approach associated with the revenue you bring in. It’s a nice, quantifiable reference point that appeals to a lot of supervisors and business owners. The second thing you could do is research a few reputable career websites, and develop a short but detailed com-

Page 5

www.lsshopper.com • 903-865-7002 pensation study based on comparable positions in your area and those similar to your location. Honestly though, if I had a valued and respected member of my team moving up from hourly to salaried, we’d have more of a give-and-take discussion and examination of the situation rather than a negotiation. Yeah, in your position I’d create a few well-researched compensation studies. Give them to your bosses, and talk with them. I know I would be impressed by that, and depending on the size of the company, they may not have done a lot of work figuring it out. In a way, it’s kind of like deciding what to ask for when you sell a car. You try to appraise it for what it’s worth in the marketplace to other people. That leads to a discussion. You’re not telling them what to do or presenting an ultimatum, you’re providing information and conducting a dialogue in a professional and respectful way. Good luck, Natalie! —Dave EVERYONE NEEDS AN EMERGENCY FUND! Dear Dave, I will back on active duty soon in the armed forces. I’m debt-free except for my home, have been following your plan, and I’m about to start Baby Step 3. We are provided certain relief funds based on where you are stationed and other fac-

tors. Knowing this, how should I approach the next Baby Step ? Kevin Dear Kevin, First of all, thank you for your service to our country. You’re on the right track. Baby Step 3 means having three to six months of expenses set aside for emergencies. Considering the stability of your employment situation, I think you’d be okay leaning toward the three-month side of expenses. It’s not like you’re a straight commission sales rep whose income can fluctuate wildly from month to month, right? You’ll still have emergencies, though, and it’ll be your responsibility to cover them. Some of those may need to be addressed immediately. See what I’m saying, Kevin? Everyone needs an emergency fund. Just make saving for it part of your budget for a while, until you have three or four months of expenses sitting in a good money market fund with check writing privileges. You’ll be glad you did! —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. These Texas organizations are helping people during the pandemic — and here's how you can, too By Megan Menchaca

March 23, 2020

With schools closed and thousands of people across the country being laid off due to the new coronavirus pandemic, many Texans are finding themselves stuck at home with no income or access to necessary resources like food or medical supplies. In response to growing concerns around the nation, President Donald Trump recently signed a bill mandating 12 weeks of paid leave for people quarantining or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms that applies only to companies with less than 500 employees. The federal bill, which goes into effect Thursday, also provides $1 billion in emergency unemployment insurance to the states and requires free testing for the new coronavirus. \In Texas, the economic damage is amplified as local businesses are shuttered, the service industry is halted, and the oil and gas industry is hammered. But as state and federal leaders continue to respond, what can you do if you’re looking for assistance? And if you have the means to do so, what can you do to help others? Food banks, school districts and some local pantries are providing free meals for people and asking for donations and volunteers as they face a significant increase in demand. Texans also have access to a variety of other resources, including free internet and housing support. Here’s a list. Food near me: How can I get meals? Texans who meet certain income eligibility guidelines can apply for various federal benefit programs. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides money for food, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children provides resources for pregnant women and people with children younger than 5. Feeding Texas has a website where people can find 21 member food banks that can provide free groceries and a place to sign up for SNAP benefits. The organization is also asking for donations for the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, and local organizations are looking for volunteers, food donations and monetary donations.
