en with urinary symptoms common with an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, may anticipate and plan for urgent and frequent bathroom needs and even avoid events and activities they enjoy because of their urinary symptoms. Whether they rearrange their morning schedules in anticipation of interrupted sleep, limit the amount they drink or purposefully seek out and stay close to the bathroom, this is known as extreme bathroom planning and can disrupt normal daily activities. In men with BPH, the enlarged prostate presses on and blocks the urethra, causing bothersome urinary symptoms, such as an urgent or frequent need to urinate or the sensation that the bladder is not empty after urinating. These symptoms can significantly impact a man’s quality of life, leading to inter rupted sleep and even a loss of productivity and depression, according to research published in “British Journal of Urology International.” As part of a survey sponsored by Teleflex Incorporated of approx imately 1,000 men in the United States, 45 years and older, who have experienced at least one bothersome urinary symptom, nearly half (45.49%) reported they have avoided events or activities they enjoy because of their bothersome urinary symptom. When they do attend an event or perform an activity, a significant number of men surveyed make plans or take action to accommodate their bathroom needs. In fact, more than 40% have chosen certain routes on road trips because they have more or better availability of restroom facilities. Additionally, about 1 in 5 said locating the closest bathroom is the first thing they do when they go somewhere new, and 1

about 43% selected seats when purchasing tickets to an event based on proximity to the restroom. These “extreme” bathroom planning habits are not just limited to daytime activities. Many men with urinary problems, including BPH patients, experience frequent nighttime waking to urinate. The majority of those surveyed (more than 70%) said their energy levels have been impacted during the day because they get up frequently at night to urinate. To avoid this, about 3 in 4 men (74.8%) limit the amount they drink in the evening. Some men (about 22%) have even slept in another bed or room than their spouse, partner or significant other to avoid waking him or her when getting up to urinate. “It’s important for men to be aware of symptoms of BPH, including frequent trips to the bathroom during both daytime and nighttime,” said Ana Fadich, vice president of the nonprofit Men’s Health Network. “While not all urinary symptoms are caused by BPH, men over the age of 45 who are experiencing urgent or frequent urinary symptoms should consider speaking with their doctor about their prostate health.” More than 12 million men in the U.S. seek treatment for BPH. BPH is unrelated to, but more common than, prostate cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, and if left untreated can lead to permanent bladder damage. Medications are a common treatment option for men diagnosed with BPH. Among those surveyed, more than 65% have taken medication to treat their condition. However, nearly 1 in 4 said their medication was “not very effective” or “not effective at all” at helping reduce their need to plan their next bathroom trip. 2

Did you know that when you submit a job application onl i n e , i t ’s p r o b a b l y read and filtered by a robot before a human ever sees it? No, t h i s i s n ’ t S t a r Wa r s . I t ’s j u s t t h e 2 1 s t c e n tury job market. And that “robot” is something called an applicant tracking syst e m ( AT S ) . T h e r e ’ s no way around it, but there are a few things you can do to help your application pass through the system and make it to a real, live human being. W h a t i s a n AT S ? An applicant tracking system is a type of software that helps filter and sort online job applications, so recruiters can find the people who are the best fit f o r t h e i r c o m p a n y. Since most companies get hundreds— if not thousands—of a p p l i c a t i o n s , a n AT S is a time-saving tool because it can filter out spam and applicants who aren’t a good match. It can also store resumés for future job openings, check references, and do other things that help with the hiring process. The downside is sometimes a perfectly good application can slip through the cracks, because it doesn’t meet all the c r i t e r i a t h e AT S i s l o o k i n g f o r. H o w D o e s a n AT S Wo r k ? Every AT S is different, but when you apply onl i n e t h r o u g h a n AT S you’ll usually be asked to answer some “knockout questions.” These can be short answer, yes/ no, or other simple questions that are used to screen candidates and quickly filter out the ones that are a definite no. For example, if the company really needs someone who’ll work weeke n d s , b u t t h e r e ’s n o way you can or want to, then you’re obviously not a good fit f o r t h e j o b . T h e AT S will then reject your application. If knockout questions aren’t part of t h e c o m p a n y ’ s AT S , or if your answers are compatible with what they’re looking for, your resumé, cover letter, background info, and contact info are uploaded into the system and can be used to keep narrowing down the candidate pool and help recruiters continue the search. B e a t i n g t h e AT S Even if your application does get up-

loaded into the database, there are still things that can stop your resumé from making it to an actua l r e c r u i t e r. H e r e a r e five tips to help your r e s u m é b e a t t h e AT S : Follow instructions - Whatever instructions are given throughout the application process, follow them to the letter! If they’re asking for your documents to be in a specific format, use that format. If they tell you they want a cover letter, give t h e m a c o v e r l e t t e r. The more closely you follow instructions, the more likely you are to get through t h e AT S t o t h e n e x t stage in the hiring process. Use the keywords from the job description - In this situation, keywords are the hard and soft skills that the recruiters are looking for in a candidate. For example, a job description might list experience with Excel or fluent in Spanish as requirements. Those are keywords you want to make sure you include on your resumé, because recruiters usually search for candidates based on those exact terms. Edit your resumé to fit the job you’re applying for - Because you’ll be tailoring your resumé based on the keywords, you won’t want to keep submitting the same document over and over to multiple companies. Not only will it be harder to b e a t t h e AT S b e c a u s e you might not have the exact right keywords from the job description, but any recruiter who sees your resumé will be a b l e t o t e l l i f i t ’s just a generic one that you send to everyone. Don’t apply for too many roles in the s a m e c o m p a n y - I t ’s okay to apply for multiple roles if the positions are similar, but don’t apply to be a marketer, copy editor, customer service representative, and developer at the same organization— even if you have the skill set for all of them. This makes it look like you’re not sure what you want to do, and that will definitely raise some red flags.
