the presence of absence 50mm Examination
As a species we are more likely to notice things that are present rather than things which are absent. When a physical object disappears or is stolen it leaves us with a feeling or a thought. It implants a sense of its absence. This study utilises absence as a compositional motif, in which a new aesthetic around disappearance or theft of objects forms. The works are a type of visual mnemonic for elements that should be there, but which aren't; like the deforestation of amazon rain forest or the disappearance of the polar ice sheets. Whilst the images speak to sustainability and global environment they represent the local and the degraded presence of absence.
