ABOUT PORT HOTEL PORT is a proposed premier hotel and innovation center that defines itself by providing guests with an environment of creativity and collaboration. Just as ships dock in order to replenish supplies, visitors will come to PORT to reinvigorate their bodies and minds.
VISION By weaving together luxury and creativity PORT will attract companies to its conference center who are pursuing innovation and startups seeking an open forum, PORT frees new ideas by lifting guests from a climate of confinement and by engaging the beauty of Lake Michigan and the dynamic life of the PORT brand.
NEW PARADIGM The beautiful three-story lobby is an interplay of light and material. The tower’s structure dramatically appears to lean over the lobby while the glass ceiling opens the space with light and cool fresh air. The terraced floors of the innovation center open to the lobby, connecting the spaces under the dynamic steel lamella roof.
ACTIVITY PORT is more than a luxury hotel, it is a vibrant hub of activity for the city of St. Joseph Michigan. The main atrium looks out to the courtyard where volleyball can be played in the summer and guests can soak up the sun on the patio.
Winter Shouldn’t be Boring The winter season replaces the volleyball courts with an ice rink and brings joy to the December cold. This focus on activity aims to engender a connection between PORT Hotel and the community. For guests seeking a tranquil atmosphere, the rooftop sculpture garden provides an elegant escape.

was a challenging endeavor that required investigation into how lamela roofs are

calculated and constructed and how tall building facades function.
Lamela Roof Drawing inspiration from the work of Foster & Partners, the lamela roof is only possible with parametric design. The precise location of each point in the undulating curve is calculated using Rhino 3D and Grasshopper. These forms can then be developed to include the essential drainage and structural components.
Tower Window The facade window was developed by studying how Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill detailed the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. By blending crisp vertical lines with a bold stainless steel spandrel, the tower has an elegant simplicity.

DESIGN FOR ENGAGEMENT GUESTROOMS Each of the 150 guestrooms faces beautiful Lake Michigan and downtown St. Joseph.
Penthouse With floor-to-ceiling windows and luxurious details, the beautiful two-story penthouse at PORT invites guests into a world of stunning panoramic views and exclusivity. The color pallet of blue glass, travertine stone, and stainless steel is bathed in a soft purple accent glow that details the kitchen ceiling and windows.
ARGENTO Italian for silver, Argento is a playful gesture to local Silver Beach Park and is the premier restaurant of the city. Located on the top floor, patrons have stunning views of Lake Michigan and Warren Dunes National Park. Warren Dunes provided the inspiration for the undulating sculptural ceiling which calmly glows during the evening dining hours.
RURBAN DATA STUDIO Rurban Data Studio, the world’s first crowdfunded data center and tech hub for emerging communities The Data Studio gives entrepreneurs a driven environment to collaborate and build new and better things, create jobs, and inspire the next generation.
TECH HUB? A tech hub is a high energy environment where companies and individuals can cross pollinate ideas and develop products.
What we do Startups will rent space to grow their business and the Data Studio will help connect them to other professionals, networks, mentorships, and even funding. The mission is to spark creativity in young companies by giving them the right tools and contacts to accomplish their goals.
DATA CENTER Data centers power websites, businesses and the apps we use everyday. They are integral to smartphones when information is being processed away from the device. The rise of cellphone use in new markets makes data centers essential to growth.
What we do Rurban creates internet exchange points in emerging communities to strengthen the network. We serve as a content delivery network(CDN) node and provide secure private clouds, high-powered computing, and app-development platforms.
BRANDING A COMPANY Founding a company involves a strong knowledge of business and identity. Modern startups are held to a high standard for expressing their ideals and mission with more than just words.
A FRIENDLY MODERN Created by Josh Sanabria, the branding for Rurban seeks to engage a friendlier modernity. A moment where clean lines and simple geometries are married with bright colors and hues.
Logo & Symbolism The Rurban logo represents the unity of rural and urban, saying they do not have to be in competition but that their unique identites can each be celebrated. The points of the star swirl together to form a perfect circle, signifying balance.
STRATEGY The branding strategy for Rurban is centered around its mission of bringing entrepreneurs together to design new things that improve life on earth. This is represented through our use of strong color and its applications in architecture, design, and technology.
GRAPHICS & EDITORIAL Every design, graphic, and photograph has the potential to change a life. Part of the challenge at Rurban is exploring how to explain complex components in a fun and engaging manor. Sometimes this is best accomplished through video, a short blurb, or an infographic.
PRODUCT DESIGN From the industrial design to simple hoodies, Rurban seeks to engage new technology and explore how it can positively affect products.
Founder’s Pen Parametrically designed by the Rurban founder, this pen is inpired by the motion of the company logo and its symbolism.
RECOGNITION The Rurban Co. project was featured on numerous technology blogs during the Kickstarter campaign.
