Welcome to SING! Global 2020
Dear Friends, Welcome to Sing! Global 2020. To those who have joined us before, thank you for continuing this adventure with us. To those who are new, we are so thrilled you could join us. You will find lots of helpful information in this program: songs to sing, articles to read, and other resource opportunities. We also encourage you to download the Sing! conference app, and to familiarize yourself with the new online event platform with its exhibit hall and chat rooms to build new connections. It is with great anticipation that we come to this year’s theme, the source of life and strength for the church through the ages: Sing the Scripture. Over these next four days, we invite you into the Bible’s story—a story that centers on the glorious news that Christ is our hope in life and death. We pray that this event would help us all to know the Word of God more deeply, drink from it more desperately, obey it more humbly, proclaim it more boldly, and sing it more joyfully. We hope you will leave overflowing with songs and ideas that you can readily bring back to your local church, workplaces, colleges, and homes. We hope you will be inspired by the artistry of all our wonderful performers—we need reminders of God’s beauty and transcendence in a year marred by so much tragedy. We hope that families will gain practical tools to build new habits, for this year provides an unparalleled opportunity to teach children to sing the Word. Of course, we never imagined that we would not be able to meet in person. Yet, while we cannot wait for the next time we are all together under one roof, we are excited to harness the opportunity of this moment and enjoy a truly unique event together as God’s people standing together around the world. And we hope you will enjoy all the talks and resources will remain available until the end of the year. As we begin, this is our prayer: “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.” (2 Thes 2:16-17). Vision for SING! SING! is an initiative of Keith and Kristyn Getty to help individuals, families, and churches deepen their faith through singing. The core values of the SING! movement are: •

Keith’s and Kristyn’s Sing! book was released in September 2017 at the inaugural SING! Conference. That first annual gathering, which commemorated the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, led to subsequent conferences on singing the Psalms (2018) and singing the life of Christ (2019). The movement grew to include events around the world with one-day city conferences and arena shows along with the development of a new online learning portal, Getty Music Plus, to train leaders and equip churches 365 days a year. The newest chapter in this story is Sing! Global 2020—an immersive digital experience hosted online. Although we could not meet in person this year, the Getty Music team waits with eager anticipation to see how the Lord will use this new event to connect believers, families, and churches across the globe for this year’s theme: Sing the Scriptures.

About Keith and Kristyn Getty KEITH AND KRISTYN GETTY occupy a unique space in the world of music as leading modern hymn writers. In re-inventing and popularizing the traditional hymn form, the Gettys are championing a catalogue of songs that teach Christian doctrine and cross musical genres. Their hymns are sung throughout the world, with “In Christ Alone” (penned by Keith and Stuart Townend) anchoring their canon of globally-sung songs that includes eighty titles listed by CCLI in its US and UK top 2000 lists. Their original publishers, Integrity Music, have estimated that more than 100 million people around the world sing their hymns every year. The couple also tour internationally—their Christmas show plays annually at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and is the feature of PBS & BBC television broadcasts. Their hymn tours have played in churches and theatres internationally. They are regular guests at venues from the Grand Ole Opry House to the Royal Albert Hall, and have sung for presidents, prime ministers, and the UK National Prayer Breakfast at Houses of Parliament. They look forward to resuming a season of SING! arena events across the world which began in their hometowns of Belfast and Nashville. Keith and Kristyn continue to oversee the Getty Music organization with the SING! movement central to their future vision. Recent years have seen the launch of the Sing! book and the annual SING! conference in Nashville, along with a global online learning program and foundation with the resources to help individuals, families, and churches sing. This year, they have seen to the launch of Sing! Global, an immersive, worldwide online conference, and they will imminently release their latest album, Evensong—Hymns and Lullabies for the Close of Day. Keith was recently awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire personally by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I—the first contemporary Christian musician ever to receive this honor. Together with their four daughters, Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville.

About Getty Music Getty Music exists to create and curate hymns for the 21st century church. Our passion has always been to join rich theology, timeless artistry, and vibrant singing for the whole family of God in churches around the globe, a work that is expressed through multiple endeavors. Getty Music Publishing, built initially on the catalogs of Keith and Kristyn Getty, is now home for a brand of hymns and a collective of songwriters who share the vision for richer congregational singing, including Matt Papa, Matt Boswell, Matt Merker and Jordan Kauflin. Getty Music is also deeply committed to educating the church. This includes the annual SING! Conference in Nashville as well as this year’s new Sing! The label works in partnership with Capitol Christian Music Group and with broadcasters and print publishers around the world from PBS and BBC to TBN. Getty Music is actively committed to global mission. In partnership with a range of mission agencies they resource church leaders and provide scholarships for education in the majority world. They also organize an annual Global Hymn Sing, the first of which featured their reworking of the stirring missional anthem, “Facing a Task Unfinished.” All of this serves the vision of encouraging deep believers through the songs they sing.

Alistair Begg Alistair Begg has been in pastoral ministry since 1975. Following graduation from The London School of Theology, he served eight years in Scotland at both Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh and Hamilton Baptist Church. In 1983, he became the senior pastor at Parkside Church near Cleveland, Ohio. He has written several books and is heard daily and weekly on the radio program, Truth For Life.
Paige Benton Brown Paige Benton Brown teaches the Bible at West End Community Church in Nashville, Tennessee and occasional conferences across the country. She is a former Reformed University Fellowship staff member for Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia.
H.B. Charles, Jr. H.B. Charles, Jr. has been the pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida since 2008. He is married to his best friend, Crystal, and they are the proud parents of three children, H.B. Charles III, Natalie Marie and Hailey Breanne. He is author of numerous books, including On Pastoring: A Short Guide to Living, Leading, and Ministering as a Pastor and On Preaching: Personal & Pastoral Insights for the Preparation & Practice of Preaching.
Ligon Duncan Ligon Duncan is the Chancellor and CEO of Reformed Theological Seminary, the largest ATS-accredited reformed seminary in the world. Every year, they prepare pastors and church leaders to serve in North America and around the globe. Ligon has written and edited several books on theology and pastoral ministry.
Keith and Kristyn Getty For over a decade, Keith and Kristyn Getty have occupied a unique space in the world of music as pre-eminent modern hymn writers with hymns such as “In Christ Alone” among the 32 songs in the CCLI top 500 between the USA and UK. Born in Northern Ireland, the awardwinning artists became the first musicians of the modern era to be given the OBE from Queen Elizabeth II for service to music and hymn writing. They have become ambassadors for the genre, from their “Sing” book and Conference which welcomes over 15,000 people in Nashville every year, to performing for Presidents and Prime Ministers, a hymn tour and Christmas tour which plays annually at Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center (as well as two TV specials on PBS and TBN), as well as founding a publishing company, record label, and online learning company for a new generation of writers and church musicians. Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville with their four daughters.
John Lennox John Lennox, Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University, is an internationally renowned speaker on the interface of science, philosophy and religion. He regularly teaches at many academic institutions, is Senior Fellow with the Trinity Forum and has written a series of books exploring the relationship between science and Christianity.
John MacArthur John MacArthur is the pastorteacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, as well as an author, conference speaker, chancellor of The Master’s University and Seminary, and featured teacher with the Grace to You media ministry.
Conrad Mbewe Conrad Mbewe is the pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church in Lusaka, Zambia. Conrad is also the Principal of the Reformed Baptist Preachers College in Zambia, and together with KBC continues to oversee the establishment of over 20 new Reformed churches in Zambia and Botswana. Alongside his preaching and teaching ministry, Conrad is the editor of Reformation Zambia magazine, as well as a columnist for several Zambian newspapers.
David Platt David Platt is pastor of McLean Bible Church in Washington, D.C. and the founder of Radical (radical.net). He holds a Ph.D. from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and has previously served as the president of the International Mission Board. He has contributed to several volumes in the CCEC series (Matthew, Galatians, 1&2 Timothy and Titus, and James) and is the author of Radical, Radical Together, Follow Me, Counter Culture, and Something Needs to Change.
Michael Ramsden Michael Ramsden is President of RZIM and co-founder of OCCA The Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. Passionately engaging with people of all background and cultures about questions of faith, Michael has served with RZIM for over 20 years and has been invited to address leaders at The White House, NATO HQ in Brussels, Members of the European Parliament, as well as bankers and investment managers around the globe. Michael has recently moved to Atlanta with his wife Anne.
John Piper John Piper is a well-known theologian, pastor, and author. In 1980 John became the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he ministered for almost 33 years. Desiring God was founded in 1994, where John today serves as lead teacher.

Isaac Adams Isaac Adams (MDiv, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as a pastor at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC. He is the founder of United? We Pray (uwepray. com), a ministry devoted to praying about racial strife—especially between Christians.
African Children's Choir The African Children's Choir and Music for Life is a Christian organization empowering African children trapped in the cycle of poverty to rise up and create positive, lasting change. Kristie Anyabwile Kristie is a pastor's wife, mom, Bible teacher and editor of His Testimonies, My Heritage: Women of Color on the Word of God. She works with the Charles Simeon Trust as the Associate Director of Women's Workshops, training and equipping Bible teachers. She disciples and teaches women in her church, and joyfully supports her husband of 28 years, Thabiti, as he pastors Anacostia River Church in Washington, DC. They have 3 children, all taller than their mom.
Tommy Bailey Tommy Bailey is an Associate Pastor and Director of Worship at The Village Chapel in Nashville, TN. He is also co-founder of Collision Media, a design and branding firm with a focus on churches and non-profits around the world. Tommy has served on multiple church leadership teams throughout the US and has a passion for serving the global church pastorally through congregational singing, songwriting and Bible teaching. Tommy holds a Masters in Theological Studies from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, MO.
Jeff Barnett Jeff Barnett is the Director of House of Worship Sales at Sweetwater. Barnett is also an instructor in Sweetwater’s Academy of Music and Technology, teaching live sound techniques. His background includes live sound engineering, recording engineering, system design, and installation. He is also a performing musician, singing in a vocal jazz group. Over the course of his career, Barnett has helped equip thousands of churches and musicians for their ministry.
Foley Beach The Most Reverend Doctor Foley Beach was elected the Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America on June 22, 2014. He is also the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the South, headquartered in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. In June of 2018, he was elected by Archbishops from around the world to Chair the Primates Council of the Global Anglican Future Conference, a renewal movement within the Anglican Communion. Archbishop Beach can be heard on radio stations in the U.S. and around the world via his teaching ministry, A Word from the Lord, and his OneMinute Message, an evangelism outreach to the unchurched. He and his wife, Allison, are lifelong Georgians and have two adult children.
Joel Beeke Dr. Joel R. Beeke is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, a pastor of the Heritage Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a polific author.
Matt Boswell Matt Boswell is the founding pastor of The Trails Church in Prosper, TX. Matt has been involved in church planting and pastoral ministry since 1998, and is also an author and hymnwriter, known for songs including "His Mercy Is More" and "Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery." Matt is a Ph.D candidate at Southern Seminary with an emphasis in Christian Worship and Biblical Spirituality.
Michael Card In a career that took off with his debut album, First Light (1981), Michael Card has recorded over 38 albums, authored over 28 books, is host to a weekly podcast, and has written for a wide range of magazines. He has penned such favorites as “El Shaddai”, “Love Crucified Arose”, and “Immanuel."
Tim Challies Tim Challies is a Christian, a husband to Aileen, and a father to three children aged 9 to 15. He is a book reviewer for WORLD magazine, a co-founder of Cruciform Press, and has written several books including The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment and Sexual Detox. He worships and serves as a pastor at Grace Fellowship Church in Toronto, Ontario and writes daily at www.challies.com.
Richard Chin Richard Chin is married to Jeanette and the father of 4 young adult children. His late wife (Bronwyn) went to be with the Lord at Easter in 2013. He serves as the National Director of the Australian Fellowship of Evangelical Students (AFES). Based at the Australian National University in Canberra, he also serves with Jeanette on the AFES staff team that proclaims Christ to both local and international students. He is the author of Captivated by Christ, an exposition of Colossians published by Matthias Media.
Ruth Chou Simons Ruth Chou Simons is a bestselling and award-winning author of several books—including GraceLaced, Beholding and Becoming, and Foundations. She is an artist, entrepreneur, and speaker, using each of these platforms to spiritually sow the Word of God into people's hearts. Through her online shoppe at GraceLaced.com and her social media community, Simons shares her journey of God's grace intersecting daily life with word and art. Ruth and her husband, Troy, are grateful parents to six boys—their greatest adventure.
City Alight CityAlight is a music ministry from St. Paul’s Castle Hill Church in Sydney, Austrlia. The vision of CityAlight is to write songs with biblically rich lyrics and simple melodies for the Christian church to sing. Through songs such as Grace and Yet not I, but through Christ in Me, CityAlight have encouraged the global church to sing Christ-centered modern hymns.
Travis Cottrell Travis serves as Worship Pastor at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson, TN. For the last eighteen years Travis has served as worship leader at Beth Moore’s Living Proof Live conferences. In addition to his writing, arranging, leading and singing, Travis has managed to carve out time to record several solo projects, including Found, Ring the Bells the Dove award-winning Jesus Saves Live (his second Dove award, and one of his sixteen nominations) and When the Stars Burn Down, which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Praise and Worship charts.
Joe Crider Joseph R. Crider is the Dean of the School of Church Music and Worship at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. With 30 years of ministry and academic experience, Crider is a frequent speaker and clinician at worship conferences and churches. He has written several articles on worship and a book entitled, Uzzah’s Dead: A Call to Scripture-Guided Worship is forthcoming.
Steven Curtis Chapman In a career that has spanned 30 years, Steven Curtis Chapman is the most awarded artist in Christian music history with 59 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, five GRAMMYs®, an American Music Award, 49 No. 1 singles, selling nearly eleven million albums, and ten RIAA-certified gold or platinum albums to his credit. He has performed on numerous television shows, and released his best-selling memoir, Between Heaven & The Real World, in 2017.

Rick Dempsey Rick Dempsey is an Emmy winner and the Senior Vice President, Creative, of Disney Character Voices worldwide. His responsibilities include the oversight of all of Disney’s voice talent in English, as well as 55 languages around the world. In 2002 Rick brought The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe to Disney. He and his wife attend Grace Community Church of the Valley where Rick has led worship for over 30 years among the various adult and youth ministries.
Mark Dever Mark has served as the senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC since 1994. A Duke graduate, Mark holds a M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, a Th.M. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Ecclesiastical History from Cambridge University. He is the president of 9Marks Ministries and has taught at a number of seminaries. Mark has authored several books and articles, most recently, Discipling, The Compelling Community, and The Church: The Gospel Made Visible. He and his wife Connie live on Capitol Hill, with Connie giving much of her time to creating a childrens’ curriculum (PraiseFactory). They have two adult children.
Bob Duncan The Most Reverend Robert Duncan is Archbishop Emeritus of the Anglican Church in North America and Custodian of the Book of Common Prayer (2019). Archbishop Duncan has served congregations in the Mid-Atlantic (including Manhattan), served on campuses for 18 years, and been bishop and archbishop for 25 years. His passion for church music goes back to his grandfather—an Anglican boy chorister—and in his choice of a bride—a church musician. He is presently Bishop in Residence at St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral in Tallahassee, Florida.
Jon Duncan Dr. Jon Duncan serves as State Missionary in Worship and Music Ministry of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, a position he has held since 2002. Previously he has served in several churches in Oklahoma before becoming Worship and Music Specialist with the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. His primary responsibilities include directing the GBMB choral organizations—Sons of Jubal and Jubalheirs—as well as assisting churches through consultation and leadership development, strengthening worship education and practice in local churches, enhancing music education through festivals and camps, and placement assistance for local churches. Duncan and his wife, Mary, have two daughters, Raechel and Jessica, and five grandchildren.
Joni Eareckson Tada Joni Eareckson Tada, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Joni and Friends International Disability Center, is an international advocate for people with disabilities. Joni and Friends serves thousands of special-needs families through Family Retreat, and has delivered over 100,000 wheelchairs and Bibles to needy disabled persons in developing nations.
K. A. Ellis K.A. Ellis is Director of the Center for the Study of the Bible & Ethnicity (CSBE) in Atlanta. She also serves as the Robert Cannada Fellow for World Christianity at RTS. Mrs. Ellis is a Ph.D. candidate in Virtue Ethics at the Oxford Center for Mission Studies in Oxford, England. She is passionate about theology, human rights, and global religious freedom. Since 2006, she has worked together with the Swiss-based charity, International Christian Response, and has traveled internationally advocating for global religious freedom.
Amos Evans Amos Evans is committed to spreading the gospel of Christ through music at Create Well Agency (providing music strategy and A&R consulting for independent artists), as the music director at Anacostia River Church (Washington, D.C.), and as a gospel songwriter-arranger.
Sherif Fahim Sherif A. Fahim is an Elder in the Evangelical church in Sidi Beshr Kebly, Alexandria, Egypt, and a lecturer of Biblical and Systematic Theology at Alexandria School of Theology (AST). He leads a reformed ministry in Egypt called El-Soora which aims to aid the Church in rediscovering and proclaiming the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Arabic speaking world. Sherif is a graduate of Alexandria School of Theology (BTh), Moore Theological College in Sydney, Australia (MAR), and Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan (ThM). He and his wife Marian have three daughters.
Silas Farley Silas Farley is ballet dancer, teacher, and choreographer. He danced with New York City Ballet from 2012-2020. He has choreographed for The New York Choreographic Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Guggenheim Museum. He now serves as The Armstrong Visiting Artist in Residence in Ballet at The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. Silas and his wife, Cassia, live in Dallas, Texas.
Sol Fenne Sol lives in Gracemount, a housing scheme in Edinburgh, Scotland with his wife Carlie and their 3 children Hamish, Betsie and Tommy. They are part of a 20schemes team that planted Gracemount Community Church in Easter 2017 where Sol now serves as an elder. Sol also established 20schemes Music and now runs it in his role as music co-ordinator for 20schemes.
Dan Forrest Dan Forrest has been described as having “an undoubted gift for writing beautiful music….that is truly magical” (NY Concert Review), with works hailed as “magnificent, very cleverly constructed sound sculpture” (Classical Voice), and “superb writing…full of spine-tingling moments” (Salt Lake Tribune). In the last decade, Dan’s music has become well established in the repertoire of choirs in the U.S. and abroad, through works including Requiem for the Living (2013), Jubilate Deo (2016), and LUX: The Dawn From On High (2018). Dan holds graduate degrees in composition and piano performance, and is active as a composer, educator, publisher, editor, and pianist.
Bill and Gloria Gaither Bill Gaither is a legendary songwriter, performer and producer whose work has stretched far beyond the confines of his small Indiana hometown. Bill met Gloria when they were both teaching school. They began collaborating to create some of gospel music’s most-loved standards including Because He Lives, The King Is Coming, and over 700 others. Bill and Gloria have collectively won seven Grammy Awards and more than 40 Dove Awards from The Gospel Music Association. Bill and Gloria operate their business from Alexandria, Indiana. They spend as much of their spare time as possible with their three grown kids and seven grandchildren.
Carlos Garcia Carlos Garcia studied a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the director of the music academy of Ozama Baptist Church in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Carlos is part of the national team of Art Education, responsible for the Dominican art curriculum for public schools. He cohosts the radio show "More Than Music" alongside Rogers Peralta, a program for musicians, worship leaders, pastors, and the general public. He is married to Elizabeth Matos and together they live in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Os Guinness Os Guinness is an author and social critic. He has written or edited more than thirty books. Since moving to the United States in 1984, Os has been a Guest Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Studies, a Guest Scholar and Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Senior Fellow at the Trinity Forum and the EastWest Institute in New York. Os has spoken at many of the world’s major universities, and spoken widely to political and business conferences across the world. He lives with his wife Jenny in the Washington DC area.
Nancy Guthrie Nancy Guthrie teaches the Bible through numerous Bible study books, at her home church, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Tennessee, as well as at conferences around the country and internationally. She is the host of the “Help Me Teach the Bible” podcast at The Gospel Coalition and the author of What Every Child Should Know About Prayer. Nancy is married to David Guthrie, who creates children’s musicals that are honoring to God, fun for kids, and have life-changing Gospel impact on our world through his company, Little Big Stuff Music.

Jamie Hillman. Dr. Jamie Hillman is a multi-faceted musician who is active as a conductor, singer, pianist, music educator, and composer. He is an assistant professor of music at Gordon College in Wenham, MA, where he directs the Gordon College Choir and Men's Choir, teaches a number of vocal and music education courses, and coordinates the vocal area. He also teaches graduate conducting at Longy School of Music of Bard College. Hillman is associate music director at Grace Chapel in Lexington, MA, where he leads the Classic service and directs two choirs and several instrumental ensembles. As a Boston University Prison Arts Scholar and faculty member of BU's Metropolitan College/ Prison Education Program, he has co-initiated a music program at a large, medium-high security men's prison in Massachusetts.
Sierra Hull In her first 25 years alone, singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist Sierra Hull hit more milestones than many musicians accomplish in a lifetime. After making her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10, the Tennessee-bred virtuoso mandolinist played Carnegie Hall at age 12, then landed a deal with Rounder Records just a year later. Now 28-years-old, Hull is set to deliver her fourth full-length for Rounder: an elegantly inventive and endlessly captivating album called 25 Trips.
Philip Johnson Philip Johnson is the CEO of "For the Truth," a Christian publishing company. He also serves as an elder at Satya Vachan Church in Lucknow, India. He is married to Sangeeta and they have two daughters. He was born and raised in Lucknow, India, and has an MA in Theological Studies.
Bob Kauflin Bob Kauflin is a pastor, songwriter, speaker, and writer, and the director of Sovereign Grace Music. He also serves as an elder at Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville.

Jordan Kauflin Jordan Kauflin serves as worship pastor at Christ Covenant Church in Atlanta, GA. He is a songwriter whose hymns include "I Will Wait for You (Psalm 130" and "All I Have Is Christ," and he enjoys training the next generation of worship leaders.
Tim Keller Dr. Timothy Keller is founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Manhattan, chairman of Redeemer City to City which has helped to launch over 200 churches in 35 urban cities, and founder of The Gospel Coalition. He has also authored numerous books, including the New York Times bestselling The Reason for God and The Prodigal God, have sold over 1 million copies and been translated into 15 languages.
David Kim Violinist David Kim was named Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of the annual David Kim Orchestral Institute of Cairn University in Philadelphia, where he is also a Professor of Violin Studies.
Julius Kim Dr. Julius J. Kim serves as the president of The Gospel Coalition, a position he has held since February 2020. Prior to that he served for twenty years as the dean of students and professor of practical theology at Westminster Seminary California. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America and serves as an associate pastor at New Life PCA in Escondido, CA. He is the author of multiple books and articles, and contributor to several study Bibles. He and his wife, Ji Hee, reside in Escondido, CA, with their two daughters.
Joel Kurz Joel Kurz serves as lead pastor of The Garden Church in the Upton neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Additionally, Joel is the director of ONE HOPE, a ministry seeking to develop and train churches and church leaders in poor urban communities. Joel is married to Jess and together they have four children. The Kurz family lives in west Baltimore.
Trip Lee Trip Lee is a rapper, author, pastor, speaker, and thought leader. As a critically acclaimed hip hop artist, Trip Lee’s music has topped Billboard charts, the iTunes chart, and he has received Dove nominations and a Stellar Award. Since his first album release, Trip has traveled the world performing for thousands of listeners. His Christ-centered hip hop message has also built a platform among churches and other Christian organizations, which has led to numberous opportunities to preach and teach at conferences and other events.
Gilbert Lennox Gilbert Lennox heped found and establish Glenabbey Church in Newtownabbey, not far from Belfast. In 1995 Gilbert left his position as head of modern languages in a local grammar school to devote himself to Bible teaching and leadership within Glenabbey. He has also taught frequently on university campuses and at Bible conferences overseas, chiefly in Africa, India and more recently in Europe. In September 2016 Gilbert retired from his senior staff role in Glenabbey in order to be able to focus more on teaching and writing, as well as to have more time for family. Shai Linne Shai Linne is a recording artist and author. He has put out numerous Christian hip-hop albums, including The Attributes of God and The Atonement. As an author, his first book, “God Made Me and You”, was published in 2018. He also had the privilege of helping to plant Risen Christ Fellowship in September 2015 in my hometown of Philadelphia, PA. He is happily married to Blair and they have three children- Sage, Maya and Ezra.

Doug Logan Doug Logan planted and pastored Epiphany Fellowship Church in Camden, NJ. He is also the Pastor for Church Planting at Remnant Church in Richmond, VA. He is the author of On the Block: Developing a Biblical Picture for Missional Engagement as well as numerous articles. Robert Morgan Robert J. Morgan is the teaching pastor of The Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, Tennessee, where he has served for over 40 years. Peter Williams Dr Peter J. Williams is Principal of Tyndale House and an affiliated lecturer at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Williams earned his PhD at the University of Cambridge studying ancient languages related to the Bible and has spent time teaching at the Faculty of Divinity, Cambridge University, and the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He is a member of the Translation Oversight Committee of the English Standard Version of the Bible, and his most recent book "Can We Trust the Gospels?" was published in 2018.

Singing the Word in the Home: A Moment of Opportunity

Why should families sing the truths of Scripture together? What’s at stake here? Psalm 78:4 says: We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.
We have been created to sing and to benefit from all the gifts God brings to us in all of our lives but specifically in our spiritual lives. We are told over and over again in the Bible to remind ourselves of God’s Word every day. This is not only because we need it more than any other voice we listen to, but also because we are prone to forget so much! Singing is a wonderful way to remember all that should never be forgotten. I still have to sing the alphabet song sometimes to remember what letter comes next. What are the ABCs of the Christian faith? What are the ideas and stories and promises we need to form in our own minds and hearts? Let’s sing those things. They will remain with us longer and deeper if we do!

The voice of the local church is grown and supported by the voice of the families and friendship groups that form the local church. When we understand and practice singing at home, we develop a more robust singing culture in church.

How did the pandemic influence your approach to family worship this year? What changes did you make, and why? We have been singing and reading the Bible and praying together as a family for several years now, so in some ways nothing changed. But we have valued it more and the pandemic has brought to the foreground big questions that we had more time to consider. Starting the family hymn sings on Tuesday nights was a new feature. We told the girls it was a special way we could tell others about the Lord as a family and encourage others to sing during this time. We have also used this season to encourage our oldest daughter to learn how to do devotionals and read the Bible for herself.

This current season is a unique window of opportunity: how would you encourage families to build new habits? Simply start being intentional about filling your home with songs of the Lord. All lyrics carry messages and they affect us in lots of ways. Find songs that speak truth to your kids, songs they love, and start singing the songs yourself. We have loosely taught our kids a hymn each month and use that timeframe to learn the melody and some of the words (our younger kids are still quite young). We also let the lyrics open up conversations about spiritual things and let them ask questions. Sometimes Keith will bring the guitar into their room but
more often than not we play the song on our phone and sing along or we just sing a cappella. Later this year we are going to share our hymn of the month list for 2021 and a few resources around them for anyone who would like to follow along with us. It’s not complicated, but over these last months we’ve seen the huge value of it as we have realized how many hymns the girls now know and how much is packed into those lyrics.

Does someone in the family need to have musical talent for singing together to work well? What advice do you have for families who do not consider themselves musical? I think we need to redefine what singing is and what it is for. Our culture tends to idolize the solo and the soloist and the performance. Singing is not just for those who are good at it or like it. It is not a spectator sport but a participatory habit—both a duty and a delight. Singing sits beside the reading of the Bible and praying. It is the calling of every believer. The great thing about congregational singing is that it is just that: congregational. The Holy Spirit encourages us as we hear one another’s voices. We are agreeing on the same things, reminding each other, giving strength to each other. So, to teach this in our homes helps build confident singers in the church family.

How do you decide which songs to teach your girls, and then how do you introduce a new hymn to them?
newer ones. We start playing them around our home. We often start with a chorus if there is one and over the course of a month build on that. Some months we learn most of the verses; other months we’ll maybe go after one or two. This year we did A Mighty Fortress. It has a longer more complex lyric so we focused on verse 1. The great thing is that a good hymn does not easily date—this one is hundreds of years old! So the girls are learning a little of something that we can come back to again and again. They can build on what they know and sing it throughout their lives. The great Christmas carols do this too.

For some, family worship can seem overwhelming. What advice do you have for how to make this practice not only attainable but fun—something that you look forward to each day? Love it yourself. That is key. Keep coming back to it. Even if you miss a few days, pick it up again. Find a good time in the day to focus a few minutes on it and then you can let it form a soundtrack for everything else going on.

If a family wants to get started, what steps should they take next? Curate a list (or copy ours!) of hymns you want your kids to know. Start playing them and pick one to focus on. Chat to your kids about singing the way you would tell them about prayer or reading the word so they begin to grasp what it is and why it is important. Then simply start singing!
We tend to pick hymns that are easy to sing with no accompaniment and that also introduce key ideas around God’s Word and Christian living. We pick both older and

Singing the Word as Believers Amidst a Global Pandemic Jim Thomas

As Christians, we know the value of praying and studying Scripture daily. Should we also seek to sing daily? Why? Of course! Our faith grows by hearing the Word of God, by preaching the Gospel to ourselves over and over again. One of the best ways to hear from God’s Word is to sing its timeless truths and bask in its reassuring hope. Whether we sing at the top of our lungs while driving our car, whisper-whistle a hymn in an elevator, or crank up our home stereo system to sing along with the sweet songs of God’s salvation, it is good to sing daily and often. Songs rich with biblical truth remind us of God’s unfailing love for us and His inexhaustible joy available to us.

The current pandemic has reminded us that so much of life is fragile, unpredictable, and fraught with pain. Why is it important to sing during a time like this? Because we need a daily and constant reminder of the power of God, the presence of God and the promises of God. In times like these we need to know that in God’s Word we find a clearer vision of God’s truth, a greater faith in God’s power, and a more confident assurance of His love for us. Singing God’s Word fills and refills our hearts and minds with the promises of our faithful covenant making, covenant keeping God.

Due to the coronavirus, many believers may be wrestling with loneliness, anxiety, depression, unemployment, or mourning the loss of a loved one—in addition to all the other normal trials of life in a fallen world. What would you say to someone who feels too burdened by such suffering to sing to the Lord right now? The Psalms are particularly helpful in times like these. The Psalms are songs of revelation as well as songs of response; The Psalms stir the emotions, inform the mind, direct the will, stimulate the imagination, and ultimately inspire worship. These 150 ancient songs include many psalms of lament that give expression to our sadness and suffering. As the 4th century North African church father Athanasius put it, “Most of scripture speaks to us; the Psalms speak for us.” Singing in suffering is not only helpful, but also biblical. Moses sang in the wilderness. David sang while running for his life from Saul and Absalom. Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn to close out the Last Supper. The apostle
Paul and Silas sang for joy from their jail cell. Medical researchers have said that singing can act like a natural antidepressant as it releases positive neurochemicals such as endorphins, dopamine and serotonin—in other words, God created our bodies to be soothed by singing.

When selecting hymns to use for personal devotions, what criteria should we use? How do we discern which songs are worth learning deep down in our hearts? I would recommend selecting songs that inform, inspire, and encourage. I’d look for songs with theological substance that will increase your confidence in God. Look for songs that offer reassurance of God’s eagerness to lavish you with His grace. Choose songs that express something significant, songs that move your heart and also, songs that are easy to sing. Whether it’s an ancient hymn by Martin Luther, a contemporary hymn or a chorus, I’m so grateful we presently have a wide variety to choose from.

What practical suggestions would you give to someone who wants to build a new habit of singing rich biblical truth throughout the week? The apostle Paul said it best: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Col 3:16). To have the word of Christ dwelling in me richly is no small, silent, or passive thing; it’s not something we ignore, or become indifferent to; it’s something we are compelled to do. And all of this is motivated by the matchless beauty and kindness of our Redeemer! With that in mind, here are three tips:

Commit several hymns—both ancient and modern—to memory.

Continue to sing the songs from your church’s Sunday worship service throughout the week.

Stream or download songs from other churches. At The Village Chapel we make the songs we sing available through Spotify and YouTube so people can sing them throughout the week.
What does “singing the Word” look like for you on an average day? Can you describe your devotional routine? While I don’t have a special singing time set aside, my wife and I sing something together everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. We might be sitting on the courtyard or driving in our car. We might sing the refrain of a seasoned old hymn or a verse of scripture somebody has put in song form. Often it is an impulsive response to something that happened, a longing we’re feeling for God’s presence or, a spontaneous prayer for someone else in need. Worship is what we were all created for; how can we keep from singing?

Jim has an MATS degree from Covenant Theological Seminary and is the author of 3 books published by Harvest House. Building Congregations that Sing the Word through the Pandemic and Beyond Tommy Bailey, Carlos Garcia, and Christian Lwanda
We asked three leaders in different contexts about congregational singing in this unusual season.
1
How might churches that are unable to gather continue to foster a rich singing culture?
Tommy Bailey (The Village Chapel, Nashville, TN): When we sing during our online worship services, we have been careful to choose songs that most of our congregation knows well and to arrange these songs in an appropriate key for singing at home. We’ve also been active on social media, posting a weekly hymn with historical info about the music and lyric. Also, family worship has seen a renewal and recovery during this season and I would encourage church leaders to provide resources that would fan into flame this critical ministry to local families within your church. Carlos Garcia (Iglesia Bautista Ozama, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic): Along with broadcasting Sunday services, our church has implemented a program where we “visit” members from a distance, greeting them and cheering from the street. We sing and pray for them outside. This has been a great testimony to nearby neighbors! Christian Lwanda (Emmanuel Baptist Church, Nairobi, Kenya): Church members can encourage one another by sending songs to each other. For parts of Africa

where it is not always possible to send things electronically, the church's leadership can still encourage singing by physically writing to members with song suggestions, and dropping them off by post, bicycle, or hand.

In this season of uncertainty across the globe, what sorts of songs are best suited to help the people of God cling to the promises of his Word? Can you give a couple of examples of hymns that have been particularly meaningful for your church? Christian: Songs that focus on the sovereignty of God, the compassion of God, our hope in Christ, the temporary but real nature of suffering, and the trustworthiness of the Word are very helpful in such uncertain times—including “He Will Hold Me Fast,” “Stricken Smitten and Afflicted,” “Enda Nasi (Walk With Us),” “Baba Yetu (Our Father),” “Umetukuka (God be Glorified),” and “Vumilia Roho Yangu (Persevere, My Soul).” Tommy: Singing songs that are familiar to our congregation has helped remind us of the faithfulness of God during a season of shifting sands. One hymn that has been particularly meaningful to us has been “My Heart Is Filled With Thankfulness.” Carlos: One song that has particularly encouraged us is “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.”

What technologies and tools have you found useful to equip your people to sing even if the congregation is scattered or has had to meet in smaller groups? Carlos: Our small groups have come together by Zoom during this time, many of them using videos of our church's praise to sing at their meetings. Tommy: We have found that social media is the easiest path to distributing the content of worship services to households. However, we’ve found that the level of engagement increases exponentially by using tools like Church Online Platform or Facebook Watch Party. Even though the congregation is not physically gathered in the same place, there is a grace in being able to participate in a worship service at the same time.

What are you most looking forward to about singing together as a church again some day?
Tommy: Hearing our church sing in harmony. Singing in parts is such a wonderful gift from the Lord and I can’t wait for the day when we get to do it again! Christian: I am hoping to record the congregation singing, and to encourage them by letting them hear themselves. This will remind us of where God is taking us in Christ: home!
Can you provide a word of encouragement to pastors, music leaders, choir directors, or church musicians who may feel weary right now?
Christian: God knows you. He loves you. He is still in charge of everything, and he has not forgotten you. For the leader whose members are dying of COVID or leaving town, please know that your struggling church is not God's negative appraisal of your work. It is his church and he will care for her in every season, even when we do not understand his ways. Carlos: Your service to God has eternal significance. Stay the course and make sure to rest regularly. Trust God and His promises. Nothing can stop the church, not a disease, not a pandemic, not even the gates of Hades will not overpower it (Matt 16:18)!

Has the COVID-19 situation prompted you to reconsider anything about your music ministry? Are there any changes you plan to implement when life is “back to normal?” Christian: COVID-19 has helped me see the need to write and teach the church songs that talk about our hope in suffering. Lord willing, I intend to write more Swahili songs for our congregation, so that they can sing the great truths of the faith in their heart language.

The Voice of the Martyrs is a nonprofit, interdenominational Christian missions organization dedicated to serving our persecuted family worldwide through practical and spiritual assistance and leading other members of the body of Christ into fellowship with them. VOM was founded in 1967 by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned for 14 years in Communist Romania for his faith in Christ; his wife, Sabina, was imprisoned for three years. Introduction to “Paul’s Wall"
T
he Apostle Paul knew what it was like to be separated from those he loved. Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon are typically identified as the Prison Epistles, written when Paul was imprisoned and isolated from the believers loved deeply. This work of art depicts the wall he might have had in his cell, and the window he gazed through to see the sun and moon. I imagined him scratching and scrawling the names of those he so loved onto the walls as he prayed for them. The window is in distressed gold leaf, harkening to his time of suffering as a time of being refined, as Peter the Apostle described. As we experience a time of separation and isolation, it is good to be inspired by Paul’s faithful use of his time, and take the opportunity to pray for one another. In Romans 16, he sends greetings to over 25 people by name. He closes that chapter with a familiar benediction… “Now to him who is able to strengthen you … the only wise God, be glory forevermore, through Jesus Christ! Amen.” While we would prefer to gather in person for the SING! Conference this year, circumstance and preferring one another in love call for us to gather virtually. We may be separated, but we are still united in Christ. We may be isolated, but we are never alone. We are scattered, yet still connected. That said, perhaps the Lord will put names on our hearts and lead us to pray fervently for one another. Just like Paul.
PRAYER Father, we echo these words of Paul from Philippians: “I thank my God in my every remembrance of you, always giving mention of you in my prayers.” As we are apart in this season, we remember one another with a similar fondness, with gratitude, joy, and with confidence that our times are in your hands. Help us to rest in your sovereignty, and the promise of your presence among us. Give us strength to make new ways and new paths, particularly when we are discouraged or overwhelmed. When our patience runs thin, with so much change, so much unknown, give us the focus to use our time well. Not so much for productivity, but to be wise stewards, feasting on your grace, and ceasing from our anxious busy-ness. You have been our light, provision, hope and refuge. Help us remember your faithfulness, and learn to trust
you again, and again, and again. For those who are sick, we pray your generous mercy. For those who are in financial distress, we pray for your ample provision. For the medical professionals who give so selflessly for others, renew their strength. For the frustration and anger we may feel, remind us that you are in control of every minute and we can lay our burdens down. When we are afraid, help us trust in you. For those we love, surround them with your grace and peace. We know you to be the God of all ages. You hold our future in your hands. In our vulnerability and uncertainty, remind us that we belong to you. Remind us to rest in your love and to be your people. For the glory of God and for the good of our neighbors, we pray these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Christ Our Hope in Life and Death: Behind the Song 2020 has been a year unlike any other. The pandemic has reminded us that life is fragile. There is so much about the future we do not know. Yet, we do know that all of us will face death. Unless Jesus returns first, it is the one certainty we can count on. The historic creeds and catechisms of the church are honest about this reality. The Heidelberg Catechism of 1563 begins, "What is your only comfort in life and in death?" The answer is profound: "That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him." These are truths we must sing. That is why, in the providence of God, I am excited that I have been able to teach my four daughters a new song this year. It is a song that is honest about death, and that’s why I think it is a song that can remind us of our unshakeable hope.

This song took over two years to complete. A couple friends and fellow songwriters, Jordan Kauflin and Matt Merker, brought me an idea for a hymn of hope. Little did we know that the other two writers on our team, Matt Boswell and Matt Papa, were trying to write a song based on the first article of the Heidelberg Catechism, quoted above. We brought the two ideas together, and around the piano at our home in Northern Ireland, a new song was born: “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.” Christianity that ignores the reality of death is utterly inauthentic. We need songs that are honest about the grave, for we have real hope to offer our troubled world. Though many believers may be singing at home, unable to gather with their churches as usual, we can still sing with confidence, because we know the One who conquered the grave by his resurrection. We need not approach death crippled by fear. As this song reminds us, we can sing “Hallelujah”—because Christ himself is our hope in life and death. —KEITH GETTY

Singing the Word to the Nations: A Season of Unexpected Opportunity for Global Missions

We know that the coronavirus pandemic has brought many challenges for those engaging in world missions— lockdowns, travel cancellations, economic uncertainty. But we have also heard that it is opening new doors for the gospel. What are some of the unexpected opportunities that have emerged? The pandemic has certainly changed many plans this year, but it hasn’t changed God’s plan to gather members of every tribe, tongue, and nation around His throne! Here are three examples of how Christians in closed countries have found opportunities amid the upheaval:

• In China, where facial-recognition cameras are everywhere, one church quickly recognized that masks used to reduce disease transmission also limited the ability of surveillance cameras to identify faces. With everyone wearing masks, they decided they could be even bolder in witnessing for Christ. • In Iran, Christians checked in on their older neighbors, offering to shop for them or provide other help. They also took the opportunity to pray for them in the name of Jesus. • In the Middle East, front-line workers had to close down all of their in-person outreach and discipleship work. But at the same time, their online and social media interactions with curious Muslims skyrocketed. They soon found that they were ministering to many more people during the pandemic than they had been before it began.

How can believers everywhere speak boldly of Christ during this pandemic? Can you recommend specific ways we can use social media and other tools wisely for evangelism? I would suggest two things. First, learn to see opportunities—even, and maybe especially, if things aren’t going as planned or as you thought they would go. Christians in Iran found opportunities to minister amid the pandemic. Let’s get creative and follow their example. The second thing I’d advise is to remind yourself often of the foundation of our faith. It isn’t based on income, health, or anything else in this temporal world. Remind yourself of these things: God is still on His throne! God loves me! My citizenship and ultimate home are in heaven.

Can you tell us about a few countries or people groups that you would urge us to pray for right now? You can always find the latest prayer needs for persecuted Christians at iCommitToPray.com, but let me share three areas where our spiritual family members need your prayers: • CHINA: A wave of persecution is sweeping across China at a level we haven’t seen in many years. Pray for our brothers and sisters there. • ERITREA: More than 600 Christians are in prison right now in a country many of us might have trouble finding on a map. Some of those imprisoned are pastors who have been detained more than 15 years. Pray for the prisoners, their families and all Christians in Eritrea. • INDIA: The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is driven by a militant Hindunationalist philosophy that wants every Indian to be Hindu. Our Christian brothers and sisters are not welcome in their own country. In a twomonth span last summer, five Indian Christians were martyred for their faith in Christ. Pray for Christians in India!

Why does what we sing—as believers, families and churches—matter for our global witness? I think it matters both for us and for those watching and hearing us. First, our singing reminds us of eternal truths. When we sing “On Christ the solid rock I stand,” we’re reminded that no earthly force—pandemic, politics, paychecks or
anything else—can defeat God’s purposes on this earth and in our lives. The second reason it matters is that others are listening and watching. The fact that we can sing God’s praises in the face of the chaos around us is a powerful witness to the truth of the gospel and the goodness of the Savior we serve.

Tell us what congregational singing is like for believers in countries that are hostile to the gospel. What is singing like among persecuted churches? And what lessons can we learn about singing from our brothers and sisters facing such challenges? Different countries have different levels of restriction. Our brothers and sisters in Nigeria can usually meet openly. Their joyful singing, clapping. and dancing is a contagious witness for Christ in their communities, especially since their churches are sometimes targeted for attack. Secret believers in North Korea can only dream about singing Jesus’ name at the top of their lungs. In their closed nation, neighbors are required to spy on each other, and a “large” (and very dangerous) gathering of believers might include only four people, often from within the same family. These brothers and sisters offer us an important lesson: It is a holy privilege to gather with other believers and sing God’s praises. Every time we have that opportunity, I hope our faces light up with joy at being part of such a large, diverse, wonderful, and musical family!

The Department of Worship Ministries labors to prepare musician-theologians for the Church who will faithfully serve, build, strengthen, and lead her corporate worship no matter her cultural song.
