ARTIST

JOAN MURRAY ABOUT THE

Born in Northern Ireland, Joan studied textiles at Belfast, Winchester and the Royal College of Art, London. She married Chris Murray and moved north to Skipton in Yorkshire, where Joan teaches fashion and textiles, creates garments to commission and exhibits her weaving, paintings, prints and garments regularly. Joan’s textile work has been purchased by The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The Whitworth Museum, Manchester; and Hove Museum in Sussex. She continually refreshes her work by studying and drawing the created world, and her faith in Jesus Christ as Lord of all is woven into everything she does.

LITURGY AND SONG

Looking at medieval music manuscripts, the notation with a quill pen was echoed in these panels. As we are singing God’s praises today, we can look back over centuries of music and words written and performed to God’s glory, and look forward to praising him in the New Creation for all eternity.

WARMEST CHRISTMAS GREETINGS!

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Sing! An Irish Christmas!

“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” is one of our oldest carols, dating back to the 17th century. It carries many words and phrases that are old-fashioned to our ears but familiar to those times. William Shakespeare used the first line in several of his plays. In As You Like It William says to Touchstone, “God rest you merry, sir" (Act V, Scene 1).

The word “rest” is better described by the idea of “keep.” (As the Irish say, “How are you keeping?!”) The phrase “God rest ye merry, gentlemen” is really a greeting that means “May God keep you in his joy.”

In these times we live in, joy can feel like an elusive reach given all the political, physical and financial instability around the world. But there is a greater and constant flowing joy that has reached for us.

At a clear moment in history Christ our Savior and our Rest came to us. It is this story we celebrate tonight, that as we sing, we might share in his joy and be refreshed for the journey until he comes again.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS, Keith and Kristyn

We are grateful for the amazing musicians that will join us each night and the team that make it possible for us to travel from city to city. May we all be instruments of his joy.

“When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.” (Psalm 94:19 ESV)

For those who would like to find out more about the meaning of Christmas and about the Christian Faith we have a couple of complimentary books available to you in the lobby – please just ask!

Special thanks to the gifted singers and choirs and their directors who join us in each city.

Getty Music would like to extend our deepest thanks to our Official Missions Partner, The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM). VOM is a nonprofit, interdenominational missions organization that serves persecuted Christians around the world. Founded in 1967 by Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand, VOM is dedicated to inspiring believers to deepen their commitment to Christ and to fulfill His Great Commission — no matter the cost.

Because of their partnership, we have been able to expand the vision and reach of the Sing! movement beyond what we would have ever dreamed possible. Thousands of churches and leaders have grown in deep theology, timeless artistry, and congregational worship because of this partnership. Their friendship and support have energized us during this season of ministry, and we could not be more thankful.

A special thank you as well to these individuals and companies whose assistance in support of Getty Music is deeply appreciated: B&H Publishing, Capitol Christian Music Group, CFO Business Services, Crossway, CTS AVL, DPA Microphones, The Fuel Music Mgmt Co, Hal Leonard Corporation, Mike Harland, Hemphill Brothers Busses, Integrity Music, Mere Agency, Music Services, Andy Moat and Pinnacle Bank, New Day Christian Distributors, Jonathan Rea, The Village Chapel, Jim & Kim Thomas, Sweetwater, Streamline Event Agency, and XTreme Trucking.

SPECIAL GUESTS

Keith and Kristyn have had the privilege of partnering with many of the world’s leading artists, Christian speakers and musicians, through the Sing! Conference. We are thrilled to introduce you to many of them through the Christmas tour.

Keith and Kristyn Getty are passionate about hymns.

Their modern hymns, including “In Christ Alone” and “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death,” are sung throughout the world. They have written or published 86 titles listed by CCLI in the past year in its US and UK top 2000 lists. Christianity Today named them the “preeminent” hymn writers of this generation who have “changed the way evangelicals worship,” and their original publishers, Integrity Music, estimate that more than 100 million people around the globe sing their hymns every year.

Keith and Kristyn serve as founding leaders of the Getty Music organization, combining diverse creative initiatives, publishing, a record label, touring, and the Sing! Conference, all serving the vision of building deeper believers through the hymns we sing. They also recently established the Getty Music Foundation, an organization that aims to foster Christ-centered singing in under-resourced parts of the world. The Getty Music team is currently developing the Sing Hymnal, which is slated to be released in 2025 in partnership with Crossway.

The Gettys and their team of songwriters share a deep musical curiosity and commitment to collaboration. Accordingly, their hymns have found a home in diverse settings, from artist recordings by Alison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill to Chris Tomlin, Lauren Daigle and Trip Lee, as well as in classical contexts such as the enthronement of the Archbishop of Canterbury and in ever-increasing global expressions.

As performers or “ambassadors for hymns,” the couple love sharing music, from singalongs in their home and at local churches to annual events at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Grand Ole Opry House. They have been the feature of television specials on PBS, CBS, TBN, BBC, and have sung for presidents, prime ministers, and the UK National Prayer Breakfast at Houses of Parliament. Over the next two years, they are excited for the first Sing! World Tour to commence in June 2023 with Sing! Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Keith and Kristyn are award-winning recording artists, with their latest project “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death” featuring a new collection of modern hymns. They are advocates for the fun and joy of singing in the family, from television and online programs to the Getty Kids Hymnal series of albums.

Kristyn also lends her voice to creative projects, most recently films such as Pilgrim’s Progress and VOM’s Sabina, and a new audio version of the entire ESV Bible published by Crossway.

Keith was the first contemporary Christian musician to be awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 2018 for his contributions to music and hymnody.

Together with their four daughters, Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville.

ABOUT

The Getty Music Organization exists to create and curate hymns for the 21st century church. Our passion has always been to join rich theology, timeless artistry, and vibrant singing for the whole family of God in churches around the globe, a work that is expressed through multiple endeavors.

Getty Music began when Keith Getty started writing hymns in 2001— with “In Christ Alone” as his first recorded original hymn! The broader organization became the home of Keith and Kristyn’s songwriting catalog and creative endeavors. Today it represents many different expressions of their original vision.

Getty Music Publishing, built initially on the Getty catalog, is now home for a collection of hymns from a growing spectrum of partners, including a team of songwriters who share the vision for richer congregational singing, including Keith and Kristyn Getty, Tommy Bailey, Matt Boswell, Jordan Kauflin, Matt Merker, Matt Papa, Skye Peterson, Ben Shive, and Laura Story.

Getty Music Sing! Conference is an annual festival-style conference in Nashville, TN, with other expressions online and in major events around the world, seeking to build up individuals, families, and churches in the importance of what we sing. 2023’s theme is Sing! The Great Commission, with a hope to gather 10,000 delegates from over 100 nations. The conference has also birthed other training opportunities including a Hymn Writing Collective and SingGlobal.com, an online learning portal.

Getty Music Touring exists to create events built on the hymns alongside opportunities to educate church leaders. Its three major initiatives each year are a hymns tour, a Christmas tour, and an international tour. Over 2023-2024, we endeavor to present a concert in each of the six continents. The tour has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Grand Ole Opry House, the Ryman Auditorium, London’s Royal Albert Hall, and Singapore’s Star Theatre, as well as on musical television specials for PBS, BBC, and TBN.

Getty Music Label creates hymn audio and video recordings, including albums by Keith and Kristyn Getty, Matt Boswell and Matt Papa, the Sing! Live series, and the Getty Kids Hymnal, along with an extensive print catalog for congregations and choirs. The label works in partnership with Capitol Christian Music Group and with broadcasters and print publishers around the world.

Getty Music’s Sing Hymnal is an expansive new resource to be realized in a diverse set of materials, from pew editions and other physical products to digital versions. Prepared in partnership with our friends at Crossway, look for the Sing Hymnal in 2025 alongside other new book resources.

Getty Music Foundation, a separate not-for-profit organization, seeks to provide education with a particular emphasis on underresourced parts of the world. In 2022 the Foundation supported the translation of Sing! Conference sessions into 15 different languages as well as granted scholarships for delegates to travel to Sing! Events around the globe.

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

Notice the comma!

Most of us probably thought we were singing, God rest ye, merry gentlemen—whatever that means. But the comma follows the word merry. The key phrase—God rest ye merry—is addressed to gentlemen (and gentlewomen). It’s an archaic expression. In the Old English of Medieval England, the phrase Rest ye merry was a common expression of goodwill, which meant Stay happy! Be in good spirits!

God Bless You Merry

The unknown rustic bards of the 1650s who began composing this carol added the word God, and the phrase took on a biblical meaning: God rest ye merry! May God give you a merry heart. The Lord grant you a cheerful spirit. May God bless you with gladness, gentlemen, as you remember Christ our Savior, who was born on Christmas Day.

Eventually these words were married to a delightful natural minor tune, creating our earliest known traditional English Christmas carol.

To the best of our knowledge, the first version of this hymn was in a handwritten volume of poetry from Warwickshire that was assembled in the 1650s. The carol didn’t appear in print form until 1760, and it was included in a 1764 periodical. The lyrics and the melody were refined over the centuries. You may remember how Ebenezer Scrooge was enraged to hear carolers singing this song outside the door of his office on Christmas Eve in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol That indicates it was a popular Christmas song in Victorian England.

One reason for the enduring appeal of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen is the biblical truth of its message.

Let Nothing You Dismay

If God blesses us with gladness, says the first stanza, we should never be dismayed. That means nothing should cause us to lose our poise and cast away our confidence in God’s protection and providence over us.

Deuteronomy 1:21 says, “Do not fear or be dismayed.”

The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 31:8, Joshua 1:9, and throughout the Old Testament. God’s presence and care keep us from the shock of fear and loss.

“Be strong and courageous…. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

(1 Chronicles 28:20 ESV).

Remember Christ Our Savior Was Born on Christmas Day

When we do find ourselves fearful or dismayed, this carol tells us to contemplate the supernatural incarnation of Jesus Christ. This truth steadies the soul. The most eloquent theologians have fallen short of describing it. Dr. J. I. Packer said, “The Almighty appeared on earth as a helpless human baby, needing to be fed and changed and taught to talk like any other child. The more you think about it, the more staggering it gets. Nothing in fiction is so fantastic as this truth of the incarnation” (from Knowing God)

Why, then, did Jesus do it?

To Save Us All from Satan’s Power

Hebrews 2:14-15 says, “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject of lifelong slavery” (ESV).

Because Christ was born, he could die. His sinless life and shed blood, followed by his glorious resurrection and ascension, forever broke the power of Satan. He redeems those who were enslaved to sin, saving us by grace through faith. This is why we needn’t be dismayed, why we can be cheerful, why we can have merry hearts.

His mercy makes us merry, and his grace imparts gladness—tidings of comfort and joy!

Now To the Lord Sing Praises, All You Within This Place

The rest of the carol follows the Christmas story as it unfolds in the Gospel of Luke—our Lord was born of Mary and placed in a manger in Bethlehem. Angels appeared in the nearby skies, notifying the shepherds who “left their flocks a feeding” and “went to Bethlehem straightway.”

In finding the Baby, they found all they needed for comfort and joy, just as do we. Our great response is praise toward God and love toward one another!

Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place,

And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas, All others doth deface.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy!

Our prayer is that God will rest you merry this Christmas as you remember Christ our Savior whose birth has brought Good Tidings to the world. May he be your Savior and Lord! May he reign in your heart!

And oh, by the way, it was this carol that provides us our greatest adjective for this time of year. Because of this song we can wish you a very…

How Can You Give the Perfect Gift to
with Disabilities?
Ukrainians

John Piper explores Scripture’s command to love the second coming of Christ, and what it is about this event that makes it so desirable. While encouraging Christians to have a genuine longing for Jesus’s presence, Piper addresses pressing questions about the end times.

“We are stirred to love Jesus’s appearing and to live now in light of the last day, in light of the return of the king. I found this book to be fuel for the mind and the heart, one that is full of biblical and practical wisdom.”

The Annunciation

We see so little, stayed on surfaces, We calculate the outsides of all things, Preoccupied with our own purposes We miss the shimmer of the angels’ wings. They coruscate around us in their joy, A swirl of wheels and eyes and wings unfurled; They guard the good we purpose to destroy, A hidden blaze of glory in God's world. But on this day a young girl stopped to see With open eyes and heart. She heard the voiceThe promise of His glory yet to be As time stood still for her to make a choice. Gabriel knelt and not a feather stirred. The Word himself was waiting on her word.

Christmas (II)

The shepherds sing; and shall I silent be?

My God, no hymn for Thee?

My soul's a shepherd too; a flock it feeds Of thoughts, and words, and deeds.

The pasture is Thy word: the streams, Thy grace Enriching all the place.

Shepherd and flock shall sing, and all my powers Outsing the daylight hours. Then will we chide the sun for letting night Take up his place and right: We sing one common Lord; wherefore he should Himself the candle hold.

I will go searching, till I find a sun Shall stay, till we have done; A willing shiner, that shall shine as gladly, As frost-nipped suns look sadly. Then will we sing, and shine all our own day, And one another pay:

His beams shall cheer my breast, and both so twine, Till ev'n His beams sing, and my music shine.
