Case Study: Mongolia

Thirty years ago, Mongolia was a Soviet state. Communism and atheism were the country’s official beliefs, but many also practiced Buddhism. There were no more than four known Mongolian believers.

During the 1989 Lausanne Congress in the Philippines, hundreds of Christian leaders and missionaries were praying for a breakthrough in Mongolia. Little did they know their prayers were about to be answered. The next year, the USSR broke apart, Mongolia gained independence, and the first Mongolian Bible translation was completed. The doors to the outside world opened and the first Christian church was planted in 1991.

The Gospel advanced quickly in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, but reaching the rest of the country proved difficult. Mongolia is an enormous country with extreme temperatures. Many still live a nomadic lifestyle in hard-to-reach areas. Those who do hear the message of the Gospel often see Christianity as a Western faith and not appropriate for Mongolians.

Today more than 98% of Mongolia’s 3.3 million people do not know Christ and are still considered unreached.

Extending the Reach of the Gospel

Across Mongolia’s vastness, there are few opportunities for Mongolians to hear the Gospel, let alone meet a Christian. This is one reason why the partnership between Christian radio and the local church has become one of the most fruitful means of reaching the lost in Mongolia.

Currently FEBC operates 16 local FM radio stations in Mongolia. Listeners hear native Mongolians discussing relavent topics about life and family, as well as Bible teaching from local Mongolian pastors. In this way, each radio station partners with established local churches and church plants to share Christ and bring listeners into fellowship.

During the pandemic, this partnership deepened as FEBC challenged churches and listeners to write songs of worship in the Mongolian language for the Mongolian church. Within a few short months, several hundred songs were written. Dozens of these songs are now airing on Christian radio across the country helping to further disciple Mongolians in the Gospel.

Do you have the Unreached in Focus?

1 in 3 people have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Challenge of the Unreached

The plight of the unreached world remains a greater crisis than most Christians realize. Perhaps the greatest challenge in reaching unreached people in places like Mongolia is the lack of awareness and prayer in the Western church.

The global reality is that one in three people have never heard the Gospel and are unlikely to hear in their lifetime unless something changes in their cultural context. That’s 3.2 billion people around the world!

Broadcasting in 50 countries and 145 languages, FEBC’s mission is to reach them.

This is why FEBC creates Unreached in Focus, a monthly email with free resources for churches to facilitate congregational prayer. Each month features a unique nation, people group, or critical issue related to reaching the unreached.

The journey of life before birth

Approximately once a month, an egg is released from an ovary and enters the fallopian tube.

As sperm travel toward the egg, they react with chemicals in the uterus and fallopian tube, giving sperm greater mobility and an ability to push through the egg’s outer layer.

Of the millions of sperm cells, only about 10–20 might reach the egg. The fi rst sperm to pass through the egg’s outer protective layer and touch the cell membrane will be the one to fertilize the egg. prior to Fertilization the baby’s age

The dates in this timeline show the embryonic age of the baby, which begins at the moment of fertilization. Pregnancy dates are usually based on the gestational age, which starts from the day of the mother’s last menstruation. This common practice yields an age approximately two weeks older than the baby’s actual age.

fertilization

Fertilization occurs when the father’s DNA from the sperm combines with the mother’s DNA within the egg. This single cell is referred to as a zygote and is a unique human being made in the image of God. Day 2

The cell divides into two cells and is now referred to as an embryo. The embryo continues moving along the fallopian tube to the uterus. Day 3

Cell division continues, and when 16 cells are present, the little ball is called a morula. Day 5

The cells form into a blastula, a spherical layer of cells around a liquidfi lled cavity. The outer cells will help form the placenta while an inner cell mass will form the baby’s body.

p. 8 This full-color book includes a foldout gestational timeline!

Day 6

Around the sixth day, the blastula leaves the fallopian tube and begins to implant in the wall of the uterus. During implantation and placental formation, the baby is nourished by uterine glands whose secretion is maintained by hormones from the mother’s ovary. Day 14 Day 22

The embryo is now implanted fi rmly in the uterine wall and will begin to grow rapidly. The brain and nervous system have been forming for several days, and the heart begins to beat.

p. 12 Day 24

The heart continues to grow, causing a bulge in the baby’s midsection, and the structures that make up the eyes and ears have started to form.

p. 16 Day 28

The pharyngeal arches are readily apparent. These folds near the embryo’s head develop into some of the muscles, bones, and glands in the head and neck area.

p. 20 Day 40 week 8

The eyes and ears continue forming, and the hands, arms, feet, and legs are easily discerned. External genitalia start developing, and within a week, the baby will be recognizable as a little boy or a little girl. The umbilical cord is easy to see.
