CIRCULATION
Following our analysis of water processes, mechanical investigations, and Columbus Recreation & Parks public pools visits, the site selection process identified sites that had existing prolific water systems and conditions. The Confluence site was of particular interest due to its prime location as an environmental, social, economic intersection of the city. Our group had the desire to introduce a less literal interpretation of water recreation in Columbus; to instigate more independent exploration with water. The design reappropriates the existing site materiality to maximize accessibility to the water and beyond to all creatures, challenging site boundaries by introducing both figurative and literal thresholds. Finally, by not prescribing habitat, our plan is to cultivate native flora, enabling them to independently inhabit various nodes across the site, ultimately creating more diverse and site-specific habitats that have greater resiliency to anthropogenic strains. Our design concept is based upon the ideas of hypernatrure (forcibly accelerated natural processes) and minimal intervention (singular, simplistic design moves). Combined on the site these create hypernatural nodes and radiating minimal intervention thresholds. Purposeful construction, deconstruction, and reassembly proliferate our site, acting as a palimpsest to reference the past programmatic uses, the surrounding context, and the movement to reintroduce Columbus to its rivers. Species curation instigates the effects of vigilant control and experimentation built within the site and developing and evolving within the margins, periphery, and beyond. Finally, the overall identity of our site is an interpretive human threshold for exploration; no pre-defined ‘pool’ or ‘bath’ for idle recreation are bring created, but rather moments of curated curiosity, indistinct destinations, and prescribed pathways that allow for different interactions with the rivers and all of its defining inhabitants.
