Home of the Community

“Home of the Community” was a summer studio group assignment to design a pavilion for the Fitzgerald neighborhood. In this project, we looked to find elements of the home that could be translated into a public space. For this space, we designed a cooking area, recreation area for both old and young, but most importantly, safety. Each move we did project was to make the site transparent, and the road it a peaceful one. Partners: Juan Cabral & Robert Westropp

The first approach of this project, while functional, was not a wise use of the structure. It is leading to a much more straightforward solution to our final iteration. This was able to improve upon our core concepts while simplifying the current design.

This street design uses an anamorphic image to create the illusion of an object being on the road, a method used in other parts of the world with Images of potholes to get people to slow down. Here it is used as a reminder that children are present and to slow down.

The Final Approach of this design combines the two structures into one and simplifies the form.

The final design for this project adjusted and was ultimately shaped by the design-build nature of the studio. Construction documents produced (these were not official but used as a learning tool), and a budget established. The group ended up only using 75% of the money provided and had planned for this to be used for upkeep or possibly for other tools for the community (this was designed to be a hub for the block club).

The Garden

The outer brick of this building protects the precious garden within this building from sound and business for a moment of calmness. The interior and garden embrace this made of heavy timber and glass. This soft interior designed with every system exposed so that the children who attend this Montessori school will have plenty to observe and question. Partner: Duncan Schildgen

From the first massing, this building set out with the goal of reaching a net zero for its energy gain. Similar to the classrooms, this is an aspect that every element needed to tie back. To balance this with the other primary objective, the group had decided early that a “fun” theme needed to be established from the start. From the exterior representing a library to the interior seeming to appear as the Detroit Science Center (or Michigan Science Center), this building has met its goal.

Each classroom is essencially a blank slate. all the the layouts and classroom designs are formed through these blocks. they are wood and shift in size and color. they quadruple as whelving, seats, storage, and in some rooms to diffuse light. classrooms may be altered as needed however a handful of layouts where suggested by the designers, the most universal being on the right of this paragraph.

Classroom design was one of the most critical aspects of the building for this group. Every aspect of this building can trace back to creating a better environment for these rooms, from the DLT structure to the Duct Sox ventilation. A small edition that may go unnoticed is the water pump in the garden area, this is just a fun system to show the greywater reuse, but it perfectly represents the “fun” theme we where going for when tying all of these elements to the classroom.

Camping in the Zoo Not a typical studio but rather one that focuses on historic preservation through research. A seven-week summer studio that established a framework for historic preservation in general and then broke into a quick initial design project. This project did not leave the conceptual phase and was more concerned with themes and practice.

The first section of this studio (5/7 weeks) focused on gathering research and publishing a book. Each student was assigned a part and needed to occupy it with their online and site visit research.

BELLE ISLE IS WHAT IT FILTERS . . . Belle Isle is a wetland and is comparable to a sponge in its relation to water. The ecosystem is heavily dependant on the water around it to support it, if it is polluted then the island is as well. When the water is contaminated fish should not be eaten, birds die off, and what plants can grow are limited. When the water is clean a variety of birds and fish can be seen, there is also a wider range of plant life. The great lakes and the Detroit River have had a rough track keeping this balance but with the return of birds such as the eagle, there are signs of improvement. This should be taken lightly however, threats such as Pipeline 5 and climate change are threatening the island in a severe manner.

Toxins from plants and the water are taken in by smaller fish. those are then eaten by larger ones and over time they become large deposits of chemicals. When consumed by a person or an animal they become sick and/or store these chemicals and develop health issues over time.

Baever War 1629 - 1701 & Fort Detroit 1701

The military stalemate between native American tribes for control of the Great Lakes reign and its connecting waterways, such as the Lawrence river. The Detroit River was a hinging point of this conflict, to control this meant to control everything. French get involved because of the potential to establish fur trade routes in this area. this leads to the French assisting with war efforts and establishing themselves in this area.

Fishing in the great lakes region is an old pratice that is engaged across the state in large levels. it also can give an indecation if the water is healthy. right now only small fish may be consumed

Modern use, the auto industry

Given to the Newly formed united states by the British empire as an attempt to make peace for post-revolutionary war conflicts. This allowed trade in the 13 colonies to be controlled within rather from the outside influence of Britain.

Ford historically has been the main user of this to control the auto industry. Water has been the easiest way to transport very heavy objects and the establishments of the automotive industry on one of the country’s largest river connections allowed it to grow quickly.

Ceded to the English at the ends of the Seven Year War French and Indian war, As part of the “Treaty of Paris”. This relinquished all French territories in North America to the British resulting in a large power gain for Britain. This established England as the major power in the Americas, now not only having the most valuable land but also the control of the major trade routes.

Seeming to be the first official built portion of the waterfront Fort Detroit is established as one of the first grounding pieces of French control over the river systems. This making them one of the largest players in the discovery of America, second to England who focused on colonization.

In General

Michigan specifically

Invasive Species

This is an ongoing phenomenon that is always happening in the world and it only becomes an issue when it overwhelms the environment that it is placed in. this influence is amplified when water is involved, typically the more water the more of impact pollution will have.

In Michigan's waterways, this starts to become an issue with the introduction of modern industry and its burdens. This influence is seen on a large with the depletion of native plants and animals. On a small scale, the destruction of soil can be noticed along the coast. Islands such as Belle Isle are drastically affected by this because not only it an island but also a swampier on. Meaning that polluted water circulates through it constantly. This is true for Michigan, but the limited land mass of Belle Isle makes this concerning. To specifically call out a couple of heavy sources: The Line 5 Pipeline and the practice of Fracking in the local area.

Pollution in the water is not only caused by machines. Fisheries create pollution by concentrating a lot of their stock fish in one spot. This creates a concentration of waste products that cannot be managed in the area it occupies. This also has the potential to carry over fish, diseases, and other elements that do not belong in the local area but can be housed in the lakes. These are basically an organism that is introduced to an environment not native to its own. When this occurs it typically throws the ecosystem out of balance and starts to destroy it. The effects of this are normally irreversible and have large consequences. In the great lakes and the connecting rivers, there are several species that have started to challenge the aquatic life that already exists.

1 Non-native species escaping Causes - Competition with local fish - Introduction of a GMO to environment - Imbalance of ecosystem 2 Crowding of fish Causes... - The concentration of fish sewage and oil - Incubation of diseases 3 These outside fish can Cause . . . - Introduction to foreign diseases - Potential for a non-native to disrupt the ecosystem - Introduction of drugs such as hormones and vitamins 4 Moray eel was introduced to the lakes and rivers preying on fish that previously had no predator. 5 Some species are good in the new environment but this is a rare occurrence, such as zebra mussels.

Masters Thesis

This was an investigation in the behaviors and relationships associated with parasitic architecture. Research on the subject entailed a full year of work to establish a theory and serve as a masters thesis in architecture. The theory itself challenges the way in which architecture is viewed, establishing the qualities of the incomplete. There is a 166 page book containing research and investigations. In addition thisg thesis was partially completed online or remotely due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Scan QR code to view the book online

To Eat at Another’s Table A Study in Parasitic Architecture

Joshua Blackburn Advisor: Wladyslaw Fuchs University of Detroit Mercy | School of Architecture | Winter 2020

To say they have spent a day in their shoes understates the lifetime they plan to spend under their skin. The host and home are known. When the parasite approaches, it might as well be their home, but it is not. The built environment is, in its essence, a parasite of the earth. Also, buildings themselves seem to represent the humans that have made them. One could state that the built environment is a monument to the sins of humans and embodies their nature. Further in the philosophy of noise (M. Serris) suggests that the parasite is noise within the world. Derived from the French definition of a parasite, this translates to static. People in this context seen as the ultimate parasite, one that manipulates through the social and physical influence on shape others and their environment. This noise/static is the start of the investigation upon people and their scenes first better to understand architecture, then to find the place of parasites within people. To understand parasitic architecture, one must first understand people and how they engage with architecture because the built environment itself is a representation and monument the sins of humans. A building as a person is the method in which e describe our scenes: noise(disruption), sight (contrast), smell (influence), touch (Plasticity), flavor (intimacy). The parasite as a person showcases a human’s true nature, and through this, a person begins in noise, violates selective scenes, and ends with flavor. A relationship such as this is not negotiated or even talked about; the situation becomes hijacked. The parasite creates its place and establishes itself under the illusion of a single being while accompanying its host. Within the hijacking process, the parasite creates a scene of motion and struggle. The actions are in many forms aggressive toward the host, who will then respond with varying types of resistance. Change occurs and will continuously happen as the parasite cocoons itself within the host. To eat at another’s table means to be guests and to receive in the situation. Behaviors and relationships shape further interactions, establishing the context. For this approach, the intention is genuinely neutral; however, what occurs will be measured and weighed. When one approaches the table, they come with a knowledge of the host and their home. At its core, the process is to gain from others. It exists in a genuinely neutral environment. For this meeting to occur, there needs to be a foot in the door before the table. A previous relationship is required, or connection will need first to be defined. A friendship or a family connection is the entry point, and as the connection changes, parasites emerge. Being a natural process, the creation of humankind, these elements are created and are built into their creations. For something to be parasitic means it utilizes the relationship, for something designed to be parasitic creates a story.

Personal Projects

Collection of projects that I have worked on outside of a studio or as an exercise for a studio. For this section i had included ink, watercolor, and charcoal drawings. Built projects originate from a masters advanced fabrication class that included: a box with no glue, chair (this is attached to the ceiling), and a tessellating object. The lower models are ketch models that balance themselves and a toy that I had designed and made. Finally, the three images below are photoshop collages.

Professional Experience Faudie Architecture: This was my first internship position out of school and acted as an introduction to an architectural office and a real-world workflow. Most architectural works were in residential and medical suite floor plans/documentation. At the exit interview, my strengths were highlighted to have eagerness to learn and engage with work in the office. Weaknesses were a lack of confidence and skill in professional drafting standards. All Drawings included were completed with the assistance of Brian Liming and David Brinkmeier at Fauddie Architecture. Also, all names/addresses of clients have been removed for their privacy.

Time Peroid: Feb 2, 2021 to April 9,2021 Position: Co-op / Intern Responsibilities: Assistance in red line corrections and document organization, both for drawing sets and various sets. Also, creation of preliminary drawings and sketches in Autocad/Sketchup.

Residence House For this project, I was assigned to modify existing floor plans and create electrical/lighting plans. This was under the guidance of a packet with detailed use of each room and the desired conditions for lighting. Also, this was all supervised by David Brinkmeier.

This was minor; however, I had also assisted in preparing a Progress Set for this project. In addition to the electrical and lighting drawings, I had collected pictures from co-workers, dated them, and added them to the T-001 sheet for the set.

Medical Suite Renovations These are a collection of medical suites that were typically small in scale and ranged across multiple projects. All of these were either modifying existing layouts or filling in an empty floor plan. Each followed a relatively similar set of boundaries; challenges surfaced from properly laying out and creating a practical floor plan from the client’s desires. Also, demolition layers were required for most drawings. Brian Liming oversaw all drawings in this section.

AutoCad: Modifying existing floor plans and correcting and red lines on them. On occasion, M-Color was used for fire escape plans.

This is an example of what M-Color (AutoCAD plug-in) was being used for at the firm.

Ridgedale Players Addition, Site Visit My involvement in this project started as an assistant to a coworker at a sight visit to collect current measurements and photos of the existing conditions. In autocad, these measurements were used to make a current floor/site plan. My co-worker oversaw the site visit, and Brian Liming directed the work in autocad.

Programs used & Purpose. AutoCad: Create floor plans from site measurements.

My co-worker took all photos while I took measurements; these represent a small sample of them. These together were used back at the office to create the site/floor plan above and a SketchUp model by one of my coworkers.
