An Oberlin alum, he studied with Dr. Randolph Coleman and Dr. Lewis Nielson, and recently was awarded an MM from Butler University where he studied with Dr. Michael Schelle. His compositions are often intermingled with other disciplines in order to make a music that must be seen and theatre that must be heard. These compositions have been performed in dozens of New York venues, in several nations and by various performing ensembles, from the Nouvelle Ensemble Musique in Canada to the Oberlin Orchestra to an Irish folk group in Dublin. He is a founding member of Ensemble 48 and the Ghost Ensemble, both of which are contemporary music ensembles. Morris has received awards and honors, including membership with the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Artist Statement When a musician walks on stage to make music he doesn’t just make music, he also walks on stage, he moves his arms, mouth, and hands. Likewise when a dancer goes on stage, no matter how graceful every footfall, every motion disturbs the air and makes sound. The core of much of my work is to bring out the intrinsic motion of playing an instrument and the sonic possibilities of dance to create a music that must be seen and a dance that must be heard.
