DEALER WORKBOOK 2013
“ONE FOCUS... WHITEWATER!”
THE BIG DOG STORY In March 2009 Big Dog was born. The wisdom and experience of industry-veterans Jason Buxton, Andy ‘Snakey’ Whiting and Peter Orton combined to launch an entire new whitewater range. Big Dog are dedicated to innovative whitewater design and now as they enjoy their fourth year in business, Big Dog are still the UK’s fastest growing whitewater manufacturer. Now with ten boats on the market, from a super-smooth squirt kayak, via carbon-fiber play machines to an innovative steep-creeking OC1, Big Dog continues to push the boundaries of advanced boat design. Entirely designed and manufactured in the UK, but now becoming available across the world. Big Dog has quickly spread across Europe and has now reached as far a field as Japan, with additional sightings in Costa Rica and Ecuador. With these strong foundations established, this year sees their first real push into the North American paddling market. Big Dog is a small but proud British company with the big aim to be known worldwide. With a keen eye for niche opportunities and grassroots development, Big Dog is a company that hears the people that paddle their boats. Open boaters were successfully consulted in the new design and out-fittings for the extremely popular Force OC1. Carbon playboats were called for and a carbon playboats was made. In 2012 Big Dog secured its first gold medal success at the European Freestyle championships in Lienz, Austria. One of the founders ‘Snakey’ has left Big Dog to pursue a new career; I’m sure the paddling community will join us in wishing him all the best. He has been replaced by Josh Gosling. While Pete and Jason focus 100% on the company, Josh shares his time with the other half of any successful paddlesport company: the paddlers! Josh is young, enthusiastic and extremely motivated to make sure everybody knows a simple truth - the people behind Big Dog really know what they’re doing; it’s proven in plastic and on the water. Big Dog Kayaks has achieved an incredible amount in just four years and it has also learnt a lot. These lessons will be taken forward to provide the basis of future growth and development.
Outfitting “sIMPLE, EFFECTIVE, COMFORTABLE AND SAFE” Focusing purely on the best outfitting option for each boat, Big Dog have been able to achieve those four goals. Big Dog doesn’t believe in scarifying performance for cost. In Big Dog’s river running and creeking range there is a roto-moulded seat for strength and saftey. Yet in Big Dogs Play range we only offer vac-formed seats, to keep the weight down when you want your kayak to fly. Big Dog have been working hard to develop a new interchangeable backrest system. This simple design addition allows for a fixed-toseat or floating backrest system, depending on the paddler’s preference. This development is to insure that every paddler feels comfortable in the Big Dog of their choice. A side from the new backrest, this year sees a number of other small tweaks and changes. Most of these changes will go unnoticed, but are there to ensure that paddling Big Dog is a safe and enjoyable experience. Take a look in a new 2013 Big Dog Kayak and see for yourself
“GEN 2” “NO COMPROMISES”
Freestyle kayaking is far from dead. Boats are flying higher than ever, and paddlers are linking moves quicker than ever thought possible. The decision to only produce the Kaos Gen 2 in Composite has allowed for no compromises. Added pop for bigger aerial moves and reduced length for more dynamic maneuvers, this was only the start. We have added a slight ‘V’ in the hull giving faster edge-to-edge transitions, softer rails front and rear for more forgiving rides. These changes would normally be enough for any other kayak company, but here at Big Dog we believe in being different. Hence the Kaos Gen 2 is incorporating a revolutionary rail design. By keeping the sharp rails at the mid point of the kayak this allows the boat to pivot quicker and allow the paddler to link moves faster than ever, combined with the added benefit of developing more drive out of carves this revolutionary design is a sure winner.

“Development”
The Storm has been developed from Big Dog’s Force and Flux models, designed for paddlers looking to learn and progress their paddling with confidence. By basing the Storm on these well respected models, Big Dog has created a kayak that will progress with the paddler. The Storm was created with developing paddlers in mind during the whole design process. The Storm benefits from a slightly longer waterline, improving tracking and speed. Whilst the semi-planning hull helps retains good stability on the flat and improves maneuverability and predictability in moving water. The Storm is easy to paddle and opens up a whole new level of kayaking for most paddlers. The Storm ticks a lot of boxes when searching for your first kayak. With the option to spec footrests or add an upgrade pack for a bulkhead footrest in either model, it’s a sure fire winner!

“PLAYFUL RIVER”
One for those who feel their paddling style is in a state of “Flux”, wanting a true River Runner but not wanting to relinquish all playful antics. The Flux retains the key play boat design feature, a full planning hull, whilst incorporating River Running levels of volume, a water shedding foredeck and more forgiving rails. This combination of features makes a kayak comfortable and forgiving for running rivers but one that can still make dynamic use of play-waves and holes on the run down. The Flux makes no pretence to being a freestyle kayak but it is certainly at the more playful end of River Runners. The Flux is where Play boats and River Runners meet head on.

“RIVER RUNNER”
Semi-Displacement or Semi-Planing, call it what you will but the Force will speak for itself on the river. The Force is a “Full-On” river runner with a semi-displacement hull, excellent volume distribution, raised rails, rigid deck pillar and plenty of rocker. The Force can charge, boof, flare, carve, slide and re-surface with the best of them. In fact, the only limiting factor to the Force’s performance is the paddler sitting inside! Fast, safe and responsive, the Force is everything you’ll need from a ‘proper’ River Runner.

“OC1 RIVER RUNNER”
Once again Big Dog has broken away from the norms of paddling, by producing a fully outfitted OC1 creeker. Gone are the days when you spent weeks outfitting your new boat. The Force OC1 is fully outfitted as standard, which allows less time outfitting and more time paddling. The Force OC1 comes with a saddle, airbags, side tanks, thwarts and dashboard so with a little fine-tuning using sticky foam (also supplied by Big Dog) the Force OC1 is ready to paddle straight from the shop! It’s not just the outfitting that breaks new ground, the Force OC1 offers river-running and creaking performance normally only found in decked boats. The Force OC1 represents the cutting edge of canoe performance and is the culmination of 2 years testing around the globe. ‘Be Different’ is a phrase that Big Dog uses a lot. Finding these niches is pushing Big Dog ever more forward in the world of White-Water.

“SQUIRT BOAT”
Squirt boating dates back to the beginning of freestyle kayaking, while float boats have gone from strength to strength in recent years, squirt boating has slowly disappeared into the dark depths. This was mainly down to the lack of boats being available from the sole UK Company that produced them. With boats being more like the Holy Grail to get hold of, many paddlers stuck to their float boats instead. With a strong vein of squirt paddlers involved with Big Dog, it was a logical step for us to step in and try to rescue Squirt boating in the UK. Enter the Karma! The Karma is a thoroughly modern squirt boat. While designed to save the squirt scene for the new generation of squirt paddlers, the Karma is also oozing traditional soul from its seam lines with smooth clean lines to evoke the passions of the long lost Squirt paddlers. Success for the Karma was always dreamed of, but within the first year the Karma has gone worldwide, being sold all around the globe. Combine this with our strong background in composite boat building, you can be sure the Karma will be built to the best specs possible.
