CITY IN FLUX Chosen City- (Perth, Scotland) Brief Description Perth is a city located in central Scotland in the county of Perthshire on the banks of the River Tay. It is a fairly small big which has a lot of culture,History and scenery which is great for my project!

Brief Fact File .Perth has a population of around 50,000 people. .Its name comes from a Pictish word meaning “Wood” .Walter Scott writ a poem called “The Fair Maid Of Perth” .The city is filled with historic monuments that have been in tact for decades.

“For a great day out Perth has a lot to offer by way of visitor attractions and leisure activities. Heritage highlights include Scone Palace, the ancestral home of the Earls of Mansfield and the crowning place of Scottish Kings and Perth Black Watch Museum and Balhousie Castle which offers an insight into one of the British Army’s, if not the world’s most famous, fighting units.” A quote taken from the website of http://perthcity.co.uk, the city is full of culture and historic landmarks. I have decided to go to Perth on a trip to gather some Primary research and photographs asking locals about the city so I can get under the skin of the city and really understand what ideas would be the best influence of the true Perth.

CITY IN FLUX Relevant Writers- (Walter Scott) The Fair Maid of Perth The Fair maid of Perth is a novel that was written by Walter Scott it was published on the 15th May 1828 and is a Historical novel inspired by the story of the Battle of the North inch. The Plot The Fair Maid is Catharine Glover who is the daughter of a glovemaker in Perth, she kisses Henry Gow the amourer while he is sleeping on Valentines day. But she also catches the eye of the Duke of Rothesay, and when Henry interrupts an attempted abduction the amourer (Henry) is drawn into Roysl intrigue and highland feud.

Perth is a very Historic part of Scotland because of the battle of the North inch and the story of the maid of Perth. Because of the rich history that can be discovered in Perth there are lots of statues and memorials to their historic background which I find interesting. The Thistle is the National flower of Scotland but and it also relevant to there background in Perth, I have planned a trip to Perth, Scotland so I can find out more about the City and take some Photographs of my own and gather more information for myself which will help me understand the city more and help me move on with my project.

CITY IN FLUX The Plan- (What am I going for?) I am going to Perth in Scotland because of the Historical background I find interesting, I love the old architecture that there is and the variations in architecture you can see growing over the years that we can see expressed in different parts of Perth. The city is beautiful and rich in culture which makes it a great City to include in my project, there are lots of opportunities to link the City in Flux brief into the city rather than me trying to find the city within the brief, Perth allows me to find the brief within the city which is the main reason I chose Perth in the first place. The Scenery there is beautiful even when you are coming into the city itself people say that the views are breathtaking!

I am going to gather some Primary research in the city of Perth, I will ask some locals what the first thing is they think of when they hear the word Perth. I will take Photographs of places I find interesting or of significant importance, of Old and New architecture and historical places. All of these things will ultimately help me come up with more ideas that I can develop forward into something visual which is personal to me and that I find most interesting about Perth.

These are a few images I have found on Pinterest at others people’s Photographs of Perth and what they find interesting on the city. I would definitley like to visit some of these places I have researched to see them first hand for my primary research and maybe take for reference images I may use in the future in my development.

CITY IN FLUX Primary Research- (The Trip) I have since been to Perth to gather some Primary research that I can use as reference images in my work and my development process. I have taken lots of Photographs not only of the place itself but also of the Journey there and what you see as you get closer to Perth. I also gathered information from locals and did a short quiz asking what people thought of when they here the word Perth, the results were great and I feel I can definitely use these as starter point in my development and my Idea generation. Perth is a very scenic place with a lot of historical buildings and countryside that various wars were fought on like the battle of the North inch. The visit to Perth has helped me a lot, I now have an understanding of the place more and feel like I can move on with my research and start researching into Illustrators, Writers and Artists that will be relevant to the city.

CITY IN FLUX Primary Research- (Key Words) I created a simple question to ask the people of Perth when I took my Primary Research Trip up there it was:

The North Inch

“What words do you think of when you hear the word Perth”

Architectural

The following are a list of the most Popular key words that people actually thought of when I asked the question.

Freezing 'Crap” (Weather)

Scotland Scenic Countryside The Fair Maid Historic Artistic Golf

“A lot of Ducks” ... “And Squirrels” River Tay Tay Street Religious Statues

CITY IN FLUX Primary Research- (Photography)

Here is a small collection of the Photographs I have taken which I feel best describe Perth after my trip there and the primary research I gathered. The Architecture and the environment were the main things I was focused on when I was taking my Photographs I feel I can do something with these Photographs rather than edit them maybe some kind of illustration would be a good idea to show the Photographs as one piece of work.

Artist Research-(Stephen Wiltshire) San Fransisco

Stephen Wiltshire is an artist who paints and draws detailed art from cities, most of his art is created from memory or having brief encounters with the place he is drawing.

TheStephenWiltshireGallery.co.uk

Stephen Wiltshire takes his Inspiration from a lot of Cities around the world he focuses on bigger cities like London and Manhattan but most of his work is of different parts of London. TheStephenWiltshireGallery.co.uk

He was awarded an MBE for his Contribution to the art world in 2006. The majority of his work is quite sketchy but is very detailed, I picked Wilshire to Research because of the amount of Cities he uses in his work visiting 100’s of different cities around the world. His work is Influenced or inspired by a City, and I feel as though he has inspired me to look at buildings from more of an artistic point of view and realize when there are good Opportunities to Research into the history of buildings or the art surrounding it.

TheStephenWiltshireGallery.co.uk TheStephenWiltshireGallery.co.uk

This is one of the most recent Pieces of art he has created, This is a sketch Of downtown San Fransisco that he drew on the 30th June 2014. The sketchy imperfect style to this piece of work shows he has the ability to create different visually stimulating pieces of work in different styles.

London Wilshire’s main focus was on his home town of London, we can see his was Inspired by this city because a lot of his work is based on London. He also Creates imaginative pieces of work like this one which includes his favorite parts of London all in one explosion of an art work. The name of this piece is “Volcano” His work also demonstrates the Change/Flux of the times of which he created the art work, we can see examples of this in some of the earlier art work he created of London and the most recent and how the building and the scenery has changed over the past years. This is how his work relates back to the “City in flux project.

CITY IN FLUX Illustrator- (Janine Rewell) Janine Rewell is a Graphic Designer who creates her work from Cities and places she has been to which she has taken Inspiration from. I have chosen to research Rewell’s work because she takes her inspiration from a lot of different cities and places which gives me a wider scope for Researching design inspired by places and cities.

Janine Rewell’s work is mostly Illustrated and the illustrations she creates are inspired by cities and places. I love the surreal style to her work and how she expresses her own opinions through visually Illustrated designs. An example of this would be in one of her Designs called “Baltic sea.” This piece of work is my favorite Rewell design because of how the research into the place she went appears in her work. The majority of the Baltic sea is in the arctic circle and has a lot of wildlife including wolves, she has brought the research she has gathered together in one design using her understanding of the place and the things that lived there. I love the different elements in the design and how it demonstrates the climate and the different things you can find in the place this has inspired me to look into and possibly use more Illustration techniques in this project.

CITY IN FLUX Work- (Janine Rewell)

The colours she has used are made up of various different illustrations which she has placed in particular ways to make it look like an outline of a wolf. I love how she has used various different illustrations to make up the bigger illustration.

This style of work links into my City in flux project Janine demonstrates the place by using imagery and illustration to reflect the weather, habitat and features of the Baltic sea.

This piece of work is very inspiring to me from Janine rewell, it links into my project because of the city influence and the buildings which are featured in this illustrative piece of work. She has used typography within her illustration to convey what she her illustration is all about. She also uses the text as some of the outlines of the smaller illustrations which I think is very clever using the text to her advantage and incorporating it into her design.

Janine demonstrates the atmosphere of the city well using architecture and features linked into buildings within her illustration to explain how HELSINKI would be like BERLIN in her work. Her choices of colours are great she uses darker and lighter colours in different areas of the illustration to create contrast which makes individual illustrations stand out and the whole illustration as a whole pop.

CITY IN FLUX

A website I have found that uses a lot of illustration I Find interesting..

Illustration-(Behance)

http://loulouandtummie.com

The main thing about the pieces of work I found most interesting is that the Illustrated work is actually a map of the place that it was made. I find this idea clever and inspiring because of how maps could be a design not just a source of information. All of these images have been collected from https://www. behance.net/gallery/Cities-RoadsFactories/296978

This is the kind of work I would like to produce, Illustration is something that interests me and the City in Flux brief would work great with this style. I want to get under the skin of the City I choose and find out what it is that goes on there and how I can incorporate this into my illustrations, showing how the city as changed and how it is Forever changing. I love the idea that the designs have old and new buildings this straight away links to the City in Flux brief. I don’t want to create a city like the artist has but I love the illustration aspect that dominates the work this is something I want to look more into.

https://www.behance.net/gallery/Cities-Roads-Factories/296978

I have looked at Illustration and how designers have used Cities as inspiration in some of there illustrations. I have been inspired to look at more illustration because of my research of Janine Rewell and how she incorporates so many places and cities into her work. The Illustrations I have collected are quite complex using a lot of singular illustrations brought together in one whole visual design which I find very appealing and interesting.

Illustration- (LouLou and Tummie)

CITY IN FLUX

Illustration- (LouLou and Tummie) “LouLou and Tummie- I love the Illustrations that they create and how simplistic they look but effective. They use Info graphics and statistics in a lot of there work using simple shapes to create buildings that are recognizable. I am going to give this a try to experiment with the effect it creates. They use a lot of city scape in there illustration designs, this is something I can recognize as linking back into the city in flux brief.

I love how I instantly know what the illustration is showing. Big Ben, Landmarks and subtle suggestions are very important in LouLou and Tummies work for defining which building or place they are trying to tell us about. (Big Ben is used with a crown to be symbolic of the queen) I could use this in my work so people would recognize what they are looking at visually and the fact next to it... (Kind of like an Info Graphic) The colour schemes are always bright and vibrant showing a range of colour and shades. This keeps the designs looking interesting as there never is a lack of things to look at, the overall appearance of these pieces are very eye catching and detailed.

CITY IN FLUX Illustration- (Inspired Title Test)

Step 1- I chose my font (Stencil STD

Step 3- I used the same ‘LouLou’

bold) I chose this font because of the boldness of the individual letters not the word as a whole I realized that my letters had to bulky so I could fit my buildings into them.

method as before using simple shapes to create a structural silhouette of a white building. My final step will be adding a point to the building with wires stretching across the letter.

Step 2- I used simple block shapes to

Step 4- I added the wires and a point to

I have tried a simple illustration implicated into the text, it isn’t going to win any awards but I still really like the idea of the illustration built in with the text and other images that are relevant to the city of Perth in Scotland which I have decided to use as my city of flux. I used Photoshop to create this Title test, I used simple block shapes to create the buildings as LouLou and Tummie do in there illustrations.

create features inside my letters, here I created a simplistic Lamp-post using the Rectangular tool.

the building and realized it was starting to look like the span of a bridge, Overall I am happy with how this test has turned out and I would be looking to use more of this in my development process.

CITY IN FLUX Project Concepts- (Idea 1) Outline A Photography based project inspired by Jasper James focusing on how a city has changed or developed over time. This could feature the change in architecture, cultural diversity or people and there beliefs in general. Population and death rates could also be incorporated into this concept to create a photography based outcome that displays different information about the city in general.

It is quite Evident then that Photography is a great concept to pursuit, if offers a wide scope for development and leaves the project open to photograph anything I would like that shows change in a city. Whether it be day/night life or textures and typography found in a city.

Photography like this interests me a lot, the use of different objects to symbolize a city is very clever. Here he uses items like the Statue of Liberty photograph to symbolize New York. This picture is very powerful in the sense that the city is very much identifiable by it’s landmarks and Tall buildings which also tells us how much we know about this Particular city.

In this Photograph a specific scene in the city has been used to replicate the busy and constant lifestyle of the City itself. Entirely in one photograph we know that the city is quite urban and has a busy lifestyle, more investigation could be done into photographs like these to get behind what actually goes on in the city.

CITY IN FLUX Project Concepts- (Idea 2) Outline An Illustration project inspired by Lou and Tummies and Janine rewell focusing on showing different aspects of the city through social, political and other people’s backgrounds and views on the city. This illustraion concept could be based around anything, symbolic landmarks a book/guide or an infographic could be creaed from this one project which gives this concept a lot of scope and possible outcomes. Because this illustration concept offers a wide range of development and research I think that I can take forward.

CITY IN FLUX Illustration- (Moodboard)

I picked these particular pieces of work because of how I could relate some of them to the City in Flux brief, I think illustration would work well and these designs have given me ideas of how I could show the city in flux. The designs I have picked are all different in ways but most I can relate to City in Flux in some way, I am going to start looking at the city I have chosen and what historical backgrounds it has. I like these big collages of illustration and how they explain the whole city in one big design.

CITY IN FLUX Reference Illustration-(Building) Big ben Reference image

This is a Big Ben reference image design practice that I have just started to create I used basic shapes to start to create my building like the Rectangle tool, Ellipse tool And the Pen tool. I like the way it looks so far, and I love how using the simple shapes makes no difference to how recognizable the end illustration is. This test was inspired by Loulou and Tummie and their work on the buildings they create in Their illustrations. This is something I am definitely interested in taking further into my idea generation. The idea I have is to create illustrated buildings using this style of illustration showing the change in architecture over the years in the City I choose.

I created this illustration all on Photoshop and it has worked well, I can tell it’s big Ben without looking at the reference image which is a good sign that the illustration is a good quality one. In future I am going to try some of these illustrations in Adobe Illustrator because I think that vectorized the illustrations will look a lot stronger and clearer.

CITY IN FLUX Initial Ideas- (Big Illustration) A Janine Rewell inspired illustration, of the City of Perth, using the Primary research as reference images creating an illustration which best describes the City of Perth in all of it’s glory including what people think and what peoples judgments are of the city into one big visual illustration. I would use a combination of both Photoshop and illustrator to create this Concept idea creating different features individually and then fitting them together into one illustration on an A3 page. I haven’t decided whether it would be landscape or Portrait yet depending on what I would put into the illustration.

I have created these Flats using a reference image I had taken in Perth on my trip I like this style of work and how I could create more little illustrations like this and then make a bigger piece of work using the individual illustrations. This is the reference image I used.

CITY IN FLUX

This is where I took my inspiration from, Janine Rewell has used the letter “S”in this design and used illustration to create the letter all of her illustrations are created on Adobe Illustrator I find this design very inspiring and I would like to apply it into my designs.

Initial Ideas- (Typographic Illus) Typography and Illustration together work very well, my second concept takes advantage of this relationship by using Illustration I would make from the city and use it to create various letters that make up some of the Key words I also gathered in my Primary research while I was in Perth.

The illustration I make doesn’t generally have to be made on illustrator, Hand-drawn typography using illustrations is just as effective and looks just as appealing and illustrated. If I were to carry this concept forward I would experiment with different techniques and try to match various illustrations to Key words and letters.

Anything can be Typography! Everything we see has a shape and a some kind of depth there are so many things that look like Letters which aren’t they can be used for typographic purposes which is something else I could experiment with if I choose this concept to develop.

CITY IN FLUX

Initial Ideas- (Fold out Illustration) This is my third idea for a Fold out book, a flip out book usually has a lot of different pages and has designs or content on each page to add information or amusement. With the idea I have in mind I would create one continuous page that folded and when opened revealed one big illustration spanning across the bottom of the continuous page. By using a continuous page with Illustrations spanning across it, it will flow better than a regular illustration that’s on screen because the folded fold out book would be handheld it offers a different dimension that just 2D art on a screen which wouldn’t really demonstarte the change in the city. The continuous flow of pages will symbolise how vast the city actually is and show the change in the city as we look through the book.

A fold out book is meant to create a The pages will fold back into a book, continuous flow of design usually with with my designs on the internal pages. information along with it to display I could add text to the external pages or information in a creative way. bits of information about each illustration I create. This would work well with the City in flux brief because I could create different pieces of information for each part of the fold out book. This could either be information on the illustration or about the city itself or both.

CITY IN FLUX Fold outs- (Analysis fold outs)

This is the sort of thing I want to do, this fold out illustration is used well displaying different architecture of a particular place. The colour scheme’s are mainly various shades of blue, she has used this to her advantage distinguishing darker and older buildings from Modern buildings. I love the layout and the fact that all of the buildings are in one singular line I find that it helps the design flow better from page to page and notice the design as a whole not the individual buildings.

The fold out book as a whole works very well and the illustrations are very strong I think that this design is aimed at more of a teenage audience like my own. The buildings are illustrated in a way where I can’t describe them as being child friendly but I can slightly older. This related very well to what I’m trying to do with my book but with the added features of information about the buildings. This is a strong design and something I will be thinking about when creating my own.

This fold out book is a lot different, it gives information rather than trying to be visually appealing. In my foldouts I want to offer both informative and design related visuals for People to look at. This is aimed at an older audience and is made directly at a person who works in business, even though there are visuals the design as a whole is still very formal and is presented in such a way that younger audiences wouldn’t be interested. I want to combine some of this formative style into my designs to make my fold out seem worth reading not just looking at.

CITY IN FLUX

Fold outs- (How are they made?)

Fold out books can be made in a variety of different ways, and each fold out book is made in there own certain way to benefit it’s appearance and the way it gives off the message the designer is trying to give and it’s information or visual information. In simple terms it entirely depends on what you want to achieve with your design as to how you approach making the actual fold out.

This particular fold out book has been made using card one long sheet has been cut and the contents of each page has been spray mounted onto it’s Relevant page. If you want more of a hand made feel then this is the way you should approach making your fold out, having your designs mounted onto your card will make the fold out book thicker giving a more handmade feel to your users who can open it and feel the texture of the different materials you have mounted.

Another way to make a fold out book is to use printing methods, InDesign is the most popular program to make books and magazine from and also works very well with fold out books. The printed fold out book offers more of a professional appearance and a cleaner look. This fold out book works best with computer generated images and illustrations rather than handmade sketches.

I think that this method would work the best for my particular design because I am planning to make my illustrations using Illustrator and other Adobe programs. A printed version would offer a more professional look which is what I want my audience to feel. Card is also used in this method for its stability and bend-ability making it not as easy to rip as paper but still offering a good bend-ability.

CITY IN FLUX

Development- (What’s happening?) I have chosen to create a Fold out book of all the illustrations I create, I will create them individually and add them to a bigger illustration which I will layout using InDesign. I will use information and Illustration to demonstrate key aspects of Perth which will be visually appealing and informative. I am going to use my own Photographs from when I went to Perth for my primary research, I will create them individually and add them to a bigger Illustration which I will use on my fold out book. I want to be able to demonstrate the different parts of Perth including information about architecture around Perth. The audience of this will be mainly Tourists who have never been to Perth before or poeple who just want to find out more about the city in general.

CITY IN FLUX

Development- (Who’s my audience?) The audience I am most trying to influence is the tourist side, this seems more appropriate as a fold out book which gives information to the consumer about the city and it’s Various architecture. There isn’t really an age range for my foldout book because people of all ages are tourists in different places. However the younger generation may find it hard to understand and not interesting for this reason the audience I am aiming to gather is people of 16 years and over. My audience doesn’t have to be tourists either they could be people that simply want to find out more about the city and place they might be researching or trying to find more about. Overall my audience is quite spread, since a lot of people are tourists and travel around my main audience will be aimed at 16+ ages who can gather information more efficiently from the fold out I create.

CITY IN FLUX Photographs-(Choices) Here are a collection of the Photographs I have chosen to illustrate so far to create the Big Illustration. I have thought about how they each individually represent the City and how they show Perth in a state of Flux which it is currently going through regarding architecture, scenery and technology.

The Flats

Clock Tower

Fourth Bridge

I have chosen these flats because of there shabby characteristics, I could see that the flats had aged next to the ones I had taken a Photograph of. There seemed to be an interesting intersection of new flats in the middle disconnecting the older flats. I found this very interesting the fact that the new Refurbished flats were right in the middle surrounded by there Older history.

The Clock tower I found very interesting, a very historic building of Perth that faces the North inch playing field which was once where the battle of the North inch was fought. It is one of the oldest buildings in Perth according to the locals it was built just after the battle of the North Inch. This has to be illustrated because of it’s importance in Perth and how it relates to the historic battle.

Although it isn’t in Perth itself I took this Photograph on the way into the city. However, Fourth bridge is still very important to the City of Perth because its the main bridge that crosses the Firth of Fourth (A popular river). Opened in March 1890, this bridge has a lot of history and I will definitely be using this in my illustration.

CITY IN FLUX Development-(Flats)

I have started to create and develop the concept I have chosen, from the many Photographs I am going to choose the ones that I feel best describe Perth growing as a City. (Architectural,Industrial,Electricity growth and energy resources in the country side) The Flats here are right by the North inch park where the battle of the North inch was fought. I will make the individual illustrations and add them to what I will call the “Big Illustration” which will be a collection of all the smaller illustrations I create in one big piece.

I will make the individual illustrations and add them to what I will call the “Big Illustration” which will be a collection of all the smaller illustrations I create in one big piece. I might change my mind about things some times and maybe change my concept all together into something completely new all I know is this is a great starting point for my City in flux project. On the right I have rendered the flats I have shown the Development process on Illustrator, I decided to use bolder colours so they will make the flats pop more I also used a higher stroke for the same effect.

FOURTH BRIDGE I used different renders and shades of Red to create the “Fourth Bridge However I still need to illustrate the endless job of painting the bridge I will use the Darker Red -(5C1C1E) because the bridge goes from dark to light when the pain starts to fade a seperate.

I used individual small circles with a darker shade of Red to the one that makes up the entire bridge framework. This seemed to add a different texture and made the bridge so we can recognise various different material that makes up the bridge in the

I duplicated this bridge several times to create the whole bridge, since the bridge was in a repetitive style I found no need to create every single partition of the bridge individually. Overall I am happy with the outcome of the Bridge and it will look great when presented across the A3 Illustration.

CITY IN FLUX Development-(Clock)

This is the reference image I began with for my illustration, I started by using the Pen tool to outline the basic features of the clock this gave me a starting point to be able to build smaller and more detailed features on. I used different levels of Strokes to distinguish thick from thinner objects and features that were on the clock, this made it easier to see where the building split from the pillars. After I was happy with the stroke line and the features I started to render, I tried to exaggerate the shadowed and lighter parts of the building by using darker and lighter contrasting colours.

However, I still wasn’t happy with the result after I rendered the colours seemed to look too clean and they made the building look brand new when in actual fact the Clock had a lot of history and was quite aged. I decided to go back and rectify these problems by adding more detail and some effects which made the building look older than the flats and other buildings that surrounded it. I used a cracked effect for the top of the Clock and used colours which I thought would give a deteriorating effect showing age and flux.

THE KILT SHOP I used another Photograph I took of the “Kilt Shop” in Perth to reference from. I used the Pen tool to create the small local shop and the banner that hangs down from the shop roof. After I created the outline and the window feature I decided to increase the Stroke to emphasize the design so it was more clear on the main illustration.

After I was happy with the stroke strength it was time to render, I used different shades of Green to create the roof and hanging banners similar to the ones in the reference photograph. I used a beige colour for the main building, I also added a brick effect,a sign and a door to the design. I thought that the building was looking very bare and uninteresting the appearance of the sign makes it more clear what shop I’m trying to illustrate.

City in Flux: Development

CITY IN FLUX

Development-(The Big Illustration) This is the “Big Illustration so far, I have added the buildings and features I have created on Illustrator so far to this bigger piece of work which includes them all. I will analyse the Big illustration like this every time I make 3 or 4 more buildings, I will be talking about the layout and how the different elements of the illustration come together to demonstrate change in Perth. This is only my first analysis and because of this the design I have so far doesn’t show the city in flux but in later developments it will become clear that I have shown the city in a state of flux.

I used the layout of the Modernist flats next to the old clock building because I feel that the change in architecture is interesting and I have tried to demonstarte within the illustration that Perth is still in a state of flux where older architecture is being surrounded by new modern architecture. This seems to say that although perth is changing and new buildings are being created the older architecture still remains as a symbolic reminder of Perths extensive history. I have also tried to represent the change in the city by using contrasting colours on the Clock and the flats, the Flats appear to be a lighter modernistic colour

showing the change in style over the years that have passed in Perth, on the other hand we see that the Clock has an opposite effect. I used dark shades on the clock bases to create a shadowed effect which also demonstrates the buildings age along with the cracks I added to give a crumbeling decaying effect. I still feel I need to make it more clear what I am trying to show in my illustration, I am going to show the architectural change in the city over time through a tourist book . This wil l be aimed at a target audience of my choice which I am thinking of being 16 years and over.

CITY IN FLUX

Development- (Fold out book layouts)

This is my first layout plan, I have used the illustration stretching across the whole of the fold out book which keeps the design flowing as each page is folded out. This also makes my illustration look more vast and all as one which can relate to the size of the city.

I have also decided to add information that could be pointing to the illustration that tells us about the illustration. This is inspired by Loulou and Tummie which use this style a lot in there designs. I’m using a similar concept but in my own unique style of a fold out book.

I have tried using the Illustration at the top of the page this time, I don’t like this layout. My Illustrations will appear as though they are floating since they are buildings it would make more sense to have them across the bottom this way I can build up my illustration from the bottom up.

Having the text at the bottom also makes no sense. It will be much harder this way to identify which piece of information is linked to the individual illustrations. In a fold out book the layout is very important, people need to be able to identify my illustrations from my text.

In this layout I have focused more on creating the individual illustrations on each page, this would make the text more distinct to each illustration. The layout benefits the text a lot more than the illustration because of how each bit of information is recognizable to parts of the illustration.

I don’t like how the Illustration is split up in this layout because the flow of my designs is interrupted by each intersecting fold out page. I would prefer my illustration to flow through each page making an illustrations that spans across the entire fold out with sections of information explaining individual illustrations.

I have kept the Illustration across all of the fold out pages which keeps the flow of my design through each fold out. But this time I have used the text in different positions, relating to what they are saying depends on what position I put them in. For example the height of a particular building would be represented by the height of the info.

This layout will work the best in my developments, having the text involved in the illustration and playing a part in some visual information would be much more interesting to look at rather than having the text just telling us information it plays a part in the actual illustration and offers a visual representation along with the text.

CITY IN FLUX Development- (Illustration Dev) This is my next analysis of the things I have created and added so far to my big fold out illustration. Since my last development I have added an illustration of Perth Cathedral and also the small Perth Theatre which I created using the pen tool on Illustrator. I have created a second document where I can try different layouts and start to piece together my fold out book and my individual illustrations which I will place into InDesign and fit in with my other Illustrations. The layout will be easier to create in InDesign because this way I don’t have to worry about placing my

designs in from different Adobe programs. I didn’t want to make the buildings too close together I wanted a small gap when I was putting some of these together because when I add my information and facts about some of the buildings we need to be able to distinguish each buildings edge from the other.

when I point out a particular building in my facts which will be dotted around various points on my fold out book.

I haven’t used the space in between in such a way that the illustrations look seperated from one another just enough so we can see each individual illustration and can identify what Ill be talking about

CITY IN FLUX Development- (Church)

Here I have created the Church using the Pen tool again and rendring using different techniques to create shadows and highlights to the building to give it depth and another dimension. I created an outline of the building first using different stroke lengths and sizes to create thick and thin lines which will distinguish a hard edge of the building from a softer edge.

I used brick effects by using the rectangle tool to create a pattern of different coloured bricks which I then used on my building. This building still needs work but overall I am happy with the outcome and can start to refine my ideas now that I have finished my illustrations.

CITY IN FLUX Research- (Interesting facts) . It is someones never ending job to paint and

. The small and quirky building doesn’t look like much but it’s actually a theatre that entertained small crowds of people putting on shows such as “Romeo and Juliet” in such a small space.

. The Fair maid of Perth is a love novel written by Sir Walter Scott about the maid kissing an amourer on Valentines day.

. Someone had to light and re-light the same lampposts every night since there weren’t any electricity. These lampposts are still up in Perth and have been for many years!

. Perth was once the capital of Scotland with a population of little over 50,000 people!

. There are statues around Perth city centre one is the fair maid of Perth sitting on a bench thought to be waiting for her lover to return.

. The Clock-tower faces the North inch field which is now a rugby playing field and park, the clock-tower was built in memory of those who fought in the battle.

. The city has won the “Beautiful Britain” award numerous times for it’s historic architecture and scenic views which has brought more people to the city of Perth.

The Rivert Tay is 117 miles long and is the longest river in Scotland and also carries more water than any river in the UK.

Re-paint all of “Fourth Bridge” by the time they have painted the whole bridge the first part of the bridge has become flaky and discolored again this means they have to start all over again!

These are some facts I found interesting about my illustrations and about Perth itself, I think these facts would benefit the illustration and make sure that the fold out book is not just made to be good to look at but also informative yet fun and interesting. I have also decided to look at some more individual facts about my illustrations since individual illustration will make up my fold out book more than any of the city as a whole will.

CITY IN FLUX Fold outs- (The Concertina) Concertina-

A Concertina fold also known as a zig-zag fold is used is a continuous parallel folding of brochures and similar printed material. Leaflets hold the most common use of this fold and are used in things like Fashion and information leaflets and booklets. This could be a good thing for my fold out booklet the illustration would flow from page to page but it doesn’t really offer the interactive feel I want when people use my fold out book. The Concertina can be used in extreme cases and can be used to create beautiful works of art which is demonstrated by this extreme fold out of the buildings and towers. Creating this type of fold will offer a more artistic look to my fold out book, this would work well if I was creating a more artistic version of a fold out book but the Concertina doesn’t offer the informative aspect as much as the ones I create would.

CITY IN FLUX Fold outs- (Double Gate) Double Gate-

A double gate fold started to be used more often in the late 1960’s for a different way to create albums for music artists that wanted a new and unique style. It is called the double gate fold because of the two inner pages that fold inside the whole fold out to supply 4 pages in total, If I were to make mine however I would use 8 pages which would consists of. ( A front cover, Back cover, two gate fold pages and a stretch of 4 inner pages that would hold my illustration nicely. This adapted idea for the double gate fold would work well with my concept, it offers pages to fill with information and the stretch of 4 pages would be great for my illustration!

CITY IN FLUX

Layout?- (Double gate adaption)

Now I have developed my illustration up to a certain point I am starting to try and focus on how the book is going to look and how the Layout is going to effect how the book looks. I have started to organize what different information will be on each page.

I was going to create a Concertina fold but decided to go with this one instead, this fold out layout offers more information and more pages than the concertina would. The pages on this fold out twine between each other and open up to reveal the illustrations, this works better than the concertina because it offers more scope for information...

...and new illustrations wand overall offers a more interactive fold out than any other fold would. There is still a front and back cover on this fold out so I need to start to think about what different information could go on each page more and start to focus on what the end product will look like.

CITY IN FLUX 4 inner pages- (Development) This is the 4 page spread I have created so far for the inside of my double gate adaption, I have finished all of the buildings and now need to focus on refining them and the background and making them look more professional. I created a seperate layout document on InDesign which I am using to structure the double gate design. as for the rest of the designs will be created using a mixture of adobe programmes whichever I feel suites the job.

Some of the illustrations don’t appear to be sitting very well with the background, for instance the illustration I have recently created of the Church appears like it has been stuck onto the design rather than sat in unity with all of the other designs.

I created a basic background to show how the final illustration will look, the facts I have will be floating around in the sky and I will experiment with different types and colour in my next developments. I will look at typography and how I want the text to appear on my 4 page spread. I feel that this is a great start and can now start to add my facts around my illustrations and start testing layout. I will refine my illustrations more after.

This means I should either look at changing the background colour slightly of editing my illustration to make it look more atmospheric using shadows and highlights to create depth.

The total length is 2528.7m The Total length is 2528.7m

I have experimented with different fonts I chose the fonts carefully keeping in mind how they would look next to my illustrations, how clear they would be and easily readable. How the font connects to my audience is also important, because my audience is over 16’s tourists I know that I didn’t have to choose my font with children in mind just a font that would fit nicely in with the sky of my illustrations and the fold out as a whole.

Making sure that the font is easy to read was the most important part in selecting these fonts, I want my fonts to also reflect the information being conveyed in the fact. In some of these fonts I have used the “2528.7m” using “Chalkduster” this gave a pencil effect which I feel related to the metric side of the fact well.

The total length is 2528.7m Avenir- Book pt size: 36

The total length is 2528.7m

Chalkduster- Regular pt size: 34

I have chosen to analyze two of these based on appearance and the way they will reflect the fact as a whole, I have chosen Helvetica Neue and Avenir for there different appearances and the fact that they would both have there advantages when on my 4 page spread.

CITY IN FLUX

Font analysis- (On the Illustration)

The total length is 2528.7m Avenir- Book pt size: 36

The total length is: 2528.7m Helvetica Neue- BOLD pt size: 36

This is Avenir and I chose this font because of how simple it is to read and understand, the kerning of the letters are great and because that it isn’t bold the individual words as a whole sit better and are one of the easiest to read.

Because the font doesn’t take up too much background space the fact doesn’t appear to be overwhelming and I feel like the fact is sitting there waiting for me to read it rather than jumping at me from off of The background.

The font also blends into my background well without become hard to read, the way it sits on the background is inviting the fact doesn’t appear to be so in your face as the Helvetica because of the thickness of the letters.

I chose the style “Book” because I felt that this style worked well with coordination with my fold out book. The name seemed appropriate and I had never used the style of “book” before but now I have used it I see the benefit it will have on my Fold out book.

This is Helvetica, and Chalkduster-. This font doesn’t sit as well on the background as Avenir but offers a boldness which makes the fact pop and easily read.

I do however like the Chalkdustertypeface, I think it represents the fact well by using the pencil effect that I associated with measurement and metric values.

I think that this font may take attention off of the main illustrations and I feel as though I am being forced to read the fact rather than enjoying looking at the background and the rest of the illustration once I have added it.

This one word sums up the entire fact using visual representation of the length by using a pencil effect which could reflect the writing of the builder or architect that wrote the measurement down in the first place which I think is ironic and clever.

CITY IN FLUX

Development- (House of the Fair maiden) This is the house of the fair maiden which I have also chosen to illustrate. I feel as though I had to include this building because of it’s intense relevance and historic background.

I made this by using the Pen tool and now have the basic building, now I need to start to add more features and detail on the building to make it look more of it’s time. I have used a reference image of the house to illustrate from, as a starting point for this smaller part of the big illustration I am very happy. I now have a basis on which I can build my design on and start to add more detail to make the illustration stronger.

CITY IN FLUX

Font analysis- (On the Illustration) Here I have taken a screenshot of what the text looks like on the illustration, the text itself sits well on my design and the white colour I have used for the font gives the appearance of clouds and enhances the look my illustration and gives out another visual message. A bad thing about the text being where it is is that we can really tell what the fact is talking about without mentioning the bridge in the fact, for this reason I might add a small arrow pointing to the bridge so we are left in no doubt what the fact is demonstrating on the illustration.

I am happy with the addition of the “Chalkboard” font on the end of the “Avenir” font I expected it to look odd and out of place but it actually enhances the fact and makes it more visual and interesting to look at. Overall I am happy with the way the font sits on my page, it isn’t too noticeable and doesn’t take attention away from the main illustration that I want people to focus on more. I need a way of showing which illustration I am showing the fact about by maybe using directional arrows so we are left in no doubt what the fact is

demonstrating on the illustration. Because the font doesn’t look too serious means that the fact doesn’t look too important and I believe that facts should be fun and relaxed, you don’t have to read the fact but they are there anyway as something else to focus on and be interested in.

CITY IN FLUX

4 page layout- (changes/background) This is the change I have made to the background, I decided to change the backgroud because I felt that the geometric designs that my illustrations seemed to give off didn’t sit well with the background of the clouds. The Pen tool I used on the clouds didn’t seem to stand out enougb and looked amateurish the way they were shaped. Because of this I decided to create this new background which I prefer much more, instead of using the Pen tool I used circles which not only gave a smoother edge to my clouds but which also added to the geometric style of my illustrations which made the background fit in well and blend well as an enitre illustrations. The shadow effect on the clouds adds an atmospheric feel to the illustration and makes them more 3 dimensional like they are meant to be there. I have also made the background brighter, using a lighter blue. The background before the change seemed to be unappealing and dull and didn’t make the illustration pop. Now the background is brighter the illustrations will pop a lot more and look a lot more interesting. I have used RGB because I am printing not putting it on the web! Red: 76 Green: 200 Blue:236

CITY IN FLUX Front cover- (Possibilities) This is my front cover, the front cover needs to draw people to make them interested in the book so the cover has to be appealing and make the consumer want to open the book up and see what lies inside. The cover also needs to inform the audience of what it’s used for, having an illustration on the front cover would make people realise that the book is about illustration of Perth. However, I don’t want people to realise what’s inside I want to reflect the historic background of Perth in the cover and have people being amazed when they open the book and see the illustrations and think that this is really not what they were expecting from the book. I love this idea because of how it shows that even though Perth looks professional and refined on the face the city really is a fun, beautiful and interesting place when you open it up and give it a look.

CITY IN FLUX Front cover- (thumbnails)

These are my thumbnails layouts for my front cover, here I have thought of creating a simple cover using typography to display the words “Welcome to Perth” I think that this would be direct and straight to the point which I think that all frront covers should be.

On this thumbnail I have thought about using an exsisting illustration I have already made and use it on my front cover to display what I am going to be creating inside the book.

Here I have thought of having my illustration on a different side to the title this again explains whats inside. I could use the buildings I illustrated next to the tittle however I don’t think this is the answer the design is too structured I don’t want random objects all over my cover.

Using a folded effect as a banner for my title will make the title stand out more, it will also give a nice platform to put my illustrations on to create a good design that conveys what is inside. The folded effect is also a good way of explaining what is inside.

Typography and Illustrations together on one cover, the illustrations would make up the letters of Perth which I think would demonstrate what the book is about and grab the attention of my audience.

CITY IN FLUX

Front cover- (Idea1 Development) This is the cover I have created so far, I have used a minimalist layout and a single block colour to describe and reflect what people know about the city of Perth and what people think they know about perth (Which isn’t a lot). In this layout development I have demonstrated how people take the city for granted and not a lot of people give the city enough credit for it’s amazing architecture and historic background which I have demonstrated inside the fold out book using illustrations and facts! I am going to work on the type and test out different fonts to see which font sits best on my background, I want the colour of the background to stay quite dark and dull and so I will use cool colours to create this. Using lighter colours won’t send give off the message of what I am desrcibing as people thinking of Perth as quite a minimalist city with not much to it.

Welcome to Perth.

CITY IN FLUX Front cover- (Development) Here I have changed the background colour to another cool colour, The purple works just as well as the dull blue colour did in reflecting the plain values that people give the city. The purple also makes the cover pop a lot more and it exaggerates the font well as the white stands a lot more from the purple background that the blue. I have also experimented with a couple of different fonts on the cover, I have used Minion pro on the “Welcome to” type because I didn’t feel that this part of the title didn’t need any special mention. Minion pro was a good choice because of this because of its regular use on a lot of posters and leaflets this meant that it didn’t look out of place on my cover. I have used Noteworthy on “Perth” I believe that this font has given Perth some character in both sentences and tells people that there is more to the eye than what meets perth and along side minion pro demonstrates the understated attitude people have towards the city.

Welcome to

Perth

CITY IN FLUX Front cover- (Development) I have changed quite a few parts of the design since my last development, I have used the same folded paper effect as I have on my back coverand it has worked very well. I have changed the font of Perth from noteworthy to Hanzipen TC I feel that this gives the perth word more character and looks more handdrawn which I like because it emphasises the word as a sigularity. I have also decreased the point size of “welcome to” to 53pt which again emphasises the word Perth. I have also added a slogan like feature to the right hand side of the fold out effect, I have used three words that I think best describe perth and what people said in my little quesionaire of what they think of Perth in my primary research. The design still works well as a minimalist cover because there is a lot of negetive background space that isn’t being utalised however I like the fact that there is a lot of space around my design.

CITY IN FLUX Front cover- (Development)

Colour code: RGB- 2F225C

I used the Pathfinder tool to create the curved edges of some of the tops of the buildings, this seemed to work better than using the pen tool because I could control how the edge looked more and was much simpler to create subtracting a rectangle from a circle made a semi circle which I could scale to make the tops of the buildings. I think the style of the illustration I have created demonstrates what is inside my fold out book well, the geometric shapes match how I made most of the illustrations that are inside the book which gives people an idea of what the book is all about when they look at the cover.

I have purposely made the illustration a dark purple colour because I think that this works the best from the lighter purple I have as the background of my front cover. The darker purple sits on the lighter purple to create the effect of a silhouette style city scape, this didn’t work as well when i tried this in the colour black because the illustration took over the page and didn’t compliment the other colours on the cover.

This is my first layout, I had the idea of having the illustration coming in from either side of the cover to get rid of any unwanted negetive space on my design.

I have also used a smaller silhouette of the illustration on the title background which I have also used the opacity tool set to 10% to add a silhouette effect.

Welcome to

Perth

This is my second layout, I have used a simpler layout on this one using the silhouette illustration standing on top of the title. It offered a great platform which I could sit my illustration onto.

The Architecture The Beauty The History

The effect this creates is great this layout looks professional and makes the words I have added a lot more relevant within linking to the illustration.

CITY IN FLUX Front cover- (Development) After discussing my last cover development with a tutor we agreed that the cover lacked depth and wasn’t interesting enough to be consumer friendly and it wouldn’t really make me want to pick the book up if I only looked at the cover. I decided add a silhouette design of a city scape onto my cover to add a design aspect and hint at what the fold out book is about before the consumer opens it. We both liked the minimalist look to the cover but agreed that there had to be some sort of relation to what people would find inside the fold out book. I made the silhouette using geometric shapes like the rectangle tool and the pathfinder to create half circles which make up some of the tops of the buildings in the silhouette. I am very happy with the cover and now it has some relation to what’s inside and doesn’t look as plain I feel confident that my audience will find this book interesting visual and informative because the cover explain this straight away using typography and visuals.

CITY IN FLUX Front cover- (Development) This is a new design I have created for my front cover, using the same aspects I have used in my original design just laying it out in a way which is more interesting to look at grabs the attention of my audience. I have made the illustration darker and brought it to the front of the design, I think that the cover needed more recognition because in the background it wasn’t as noticeable. This way the illustration is more of a focus point and is a much better point of interest to advertise my fold out book.

Welcome To

Perth

I have also used three individual white fold out designs for the serpate words, I think this displays the title of the fold out book in a more design orientated way and this coupled with the illustration explains well what the fold out book is about. Seperating and splitting various aspects of the cover into different layouts has worked well on an experimental level. Trying out a number of different fonts and layouts is definitley the way to go I am happy with all of the features that are on the cover now it is just a case of trying different features in different places.

The Architecture The Beauty The History Bringing the illustration to the front of the design has made the cover look more interesting. It grabs the attention of my audience more using the illustration clearer on the cover leaves the audience in no doubt what the

book is about this is something I had trouble with my last design. darkening the illustration has ensured that future print outs will be clear and up to standard.

I really like the layered layouts of my front cover, I have used the opacity tool and the layers to create this stacked and layered effect in which buildings and my illustration look like they have been put on top of one another. I also think that this gives the design more depth and helps interest people.

IMPACT works well as a font, and stands out clearly on my layered background because of it’s bold lettering , I also like the Kerning of the font and how the letters are so close and so bold yet easy to read. I will now talk with tutors and peers to see which they prefer once I have this information it will make my desicion easier when deciding which front cover layout to work on.

CITY IN FLUX

Front cover- (Development of choice)

Welcome To

Perth The Architecture The Beauty The History

I tried the typography in different layouts on the page, I tried it in different corners of the page to see where it looked the most comfortable. Because of the layered style of the title on my cover it was a case of positioning the type in different places on the cover to see where the title was the most visable. I have used two layouts on this page to demonstarte how I moved the title around to show ehere it would be the most visable and the least visable.

Welcome To

Perth

I want to make the front cover glossy so everything stads out on the background clearly using satin or any other type of paper will be great for the inside illustrations but using similar colours in this instance purple may be misleading to what you see on screen and what you see when you print off.

The Architecture The Beauty The History

Having the type at the bottom left of the cover I feel works better than the top of the page, the layered style of the text with the illustrative background works well and adds depth to my design and to the title. The variation of the different purples with different opacities has worked well to add a perspective effect to my title page this again adds depth and dimension to my title page that I didn’t have before.

CITY IN FLUX Front cover- (Finished cover)

This is my final design for my front cover, I am very happy with the outcome the stacked effect of the different layers of my illustration to create a perspective depth to my design which I think is very important. The font I have used “IMPACT works well because of the bold type on the illustrative backround the different levels of opacity make the type blend seemlessly in wit the background.

Welcome To

Perth

I stacked the different levels of opacity of the illustrations behind each other with the highest opacity level near the front to emphasise the fact that there is a perspective.

The Architecture The Beauty The History

Overall I am happy with the final outcome of this cover, it expresses what my consumer audience expect to find inside of the fold out book.

CITY IN FLUX Gate folds- (Possibilities) I want to use my middle inner pages as a taster of what you’ll find when you open the whole fold out book. I was thinking of using two of the buildings I have already illustrated to fill both pages and maybe a small fact about them both on the same page. I think my consumer audience would understand the book more if I used this on both or at least one of my pages this would help them realise that the book is about illustrations and facts. Another possibilty is that I could fill both pages with information of the buildings on the bigger illustration that is inside. However, although this would be informative and great for the information I don’t think that the information would work well on it’s own and I think that people would rather look at facts than long lists of information about buildings they don’t know about.

CITY IN FLUX Gate folds- (Illustration choices) I want to use two illustrations on my gate fold with information along with the illustration, I want to use a big illustration that fills out the intire page this way the focus is more on the illustration but I can put a fact or some information on the illustration itself. This means that the fact wont look out of place and using the illustration with the fact makes it obvious what building the fact is actually explaining.

The flats are great because of there shape and would be perfect for the shape of my page, however there isn’t enough free space to fit in a fact or information regarding the illustration.

Again the clocktower is a great shape for the page but the lack of free space for a fact is a realy problem I want some form of information on the pages.

Now

PERTH THEATRE

There is some space on this illustration and the building can be resized easily to look larger than life on the page, emphasising the size of the cathedral is something I can really bring to life if I use this illustration.

Sleeping Beauty

Again there are some spaces for the facts to fit in where no important parts of the illustration would be covered. Using this illustration would be a good choice along side the cathedral because of the variation of actual size between the two buildings.

CITY IN FLUX Middle pages- (Development) This is the first page of the two pages that will fold out to reveal my big illustration! I decided to use the Perth Cathedral as my building for it’s larger than life attitude and the way that it sits on my page. It also gave me room to put a small fact in about the Cathedral so when people get to this page they will know now what to expect when they open the full fold out book and look inside! I have used Avenir book for the font of my fact to replicate the font that is inside the fold out. I think this font will appeal to my target audience as well because of how easy it is to read, I have book instead of bold because I felt that using bold lettering would appeal more to the younger generation that may have trouble reading the individual letters. I used a black background which is a great contrast to the fact which is now being emphasised because of it’s dark surroundings.

Perth Cathedral “St Ninians” has never been retouched or updated, and has now been standing since the

CITY IN FLUX Middle pages- (Development) This is my second page of my two page fold out, it wasn’t easy to pick which building I was going to use on this page, I had to bare in mind if there would be enough space for my fact that I chose. The Theatre illustration seemed to offer a perfect space on the doorway for a small fact to fit on which I was very happy about. I chose to the use the theatre because it isn’t that visable on the illustration and I wanted people to see the beauty of the building which I have illustrated before seeing the bigger illustration and layout of all of the other buildings. Overall I am happy with both pages, the facts sits well on the individual pages and convery well what the consumer is going to find inside. The layout is great and the colours contrast well to offer two seperate pages that work together well. I am happy with these middle pages and I have now completed all of the inside pages of my fold out book!

CITY IN FLUX Back cover- (Possibilities) I want the back cover to be in the same style as the front cover, I want the cover to look professional and reflect the city on the face. The job of the back cover however would be to convey information about each of the illustrations and the buildings. I have illustrated and there location, this would benefit my target audience which is the tourist market. It would help the tourists that would want to go visit the famous architecture for themselves having being intreagued by the facts and the illustrations that were inside the book.

These are the bits of information I will use in designing my back page, I have used Addresses, telephone and relevant websites for each of the illustrations.

I haven’t used contact information and places for all of the illustrations because some of the illustrations like the lampost illustration can be seen everywhere around Perth and doesn’t really have a specific address or location.

I am happy with the information I have gathered and now I need to focus on how it will be presented on my back cover.

CITY IN FLUX Back cover- (Development) This is my next development for my back page, I have used all of the information provided on my cover and focused on layout more than the actual font or text in this development. I used a folded paper effect for the box for my title to sit in, I created the folded edges using the pen tool creating individual boxes and the opacity tool to create the effect of the papers edge being folded. I am happy with how this look and how the title looks blended into the effect. I may go back and try this on my front cover using the same effect on the title to give the page a little more design. I have also used sub headings like “See them for yourself ” and “Visit Perth” to influence my audience to use the contact info to go and visit the various architecture and illustrations I have used. I am not going to work on the font and how it sits on the cover so it doesn’t look out of place or unprofessional.

Back cover- (Finished back cover?) This is the completed design for my back cover, I have used smaller folded paper effects to use as the background for my illustration information. I have also changed font on the title “Contacts” to an American Type writer font I feel that this font works the best with the opacity tool I have used as the title. I have also added the other small bullet pointed types that I have also used on the front cover this creates a reoccuring theme between the covers which I feel works well on the fold out book. Overall I am happy with both of the covers I have created they work well together and as a complete cover for my fold out book.

CITY IN FLUX

Back cover- (back cover- different layout) This is a different layout that I have tried with the back cover, I didn’t think that the cover I originally created as my final was professional enough, the font I used was way too bold and in your face on the page which is why I have used Minion pro(Regular) on this layout. The text doesn’t look as in your face like a title, I don’t want my back cover to have any stand out information and so I am happy with how the layout looks. I have used the city scape silhouette I have created appearing from the side of the cover horizontally, this way I can see all of the illustration and none is hid behind any of the information. Overall I am happy with this new layout, it does what every back cover does, it displays information well the layout works well and uses informing information and visual information well to re-iterate what is in the fold out book.

CITY IN FLUX Back cover- (Final layout) This is the final layout of my back

cover, I have darkened the purple and decreased the opacity using a darker colour this way the illustration stands out and has more recognition than it did vertically on the page.

The contact information is still visable regardless of the illustration that is layed on top of the contact info, the design layout as a whole looks more professional and now both illustrations on both covers have a ans” has horizontal illustration. updated,

g since the I think thats it’s important that all aspects of the page are easy to see and I think I have achieved this with my font choice my colour choices and the opacity tool to create a great back cover which clearly expresses information. Now I will place all of the designs on my indesign document and create my final layout, I will then print off and take photographs of my outcome.

CITY IN FLUX Finals- (Final layouts)

My final layout consists of my individual illustrations that I have used Adobe illustrator to create. I think that the iconography styled illustrations I have created are strong. I know this because they can be easily recognised by my target audience which I have proven by showing some of the audience I am targeting.

The font works well, Avenir book was the perfect font to use because of its relaxed style. I didn’t want to use a font that was sharp or bold because of how it would over-rule my illustrations, I didn’t want my facts to take over the page and I wanted my illustrations to play the main focus on this piece.

The illustration as a whole was very rewarding to finish, adding the individual illustrations to the pages made it easier to experiment with layout and where to put certain illustrations. I decided to re-make the clouds on the illustration because of the geometric style of the illustration as a whole. Using circles on the clouds made them more geometric like I had used shapes to create the clouds this makes the background and illustration compliment each other and the whole illustration works well together.
