The Brief : The aim of the brief is to submit creative proposals through to finished design work/ animation for a new version of the “Golden Record” entitled “Earth Artifact”. This doesn’t have to be a reproduction of the original record, but could be more contemporary version which should be reflected in the comntent and the format media of your choice. This could range from Animation to info-graphics.

Research : Research should undertake research methodologies and have annotated findings of sources and useful images rather than slavishly using Google images for primary research. You may wish to take a different approach to a social or a political stance, rather than the NASA and Carl Sagan approach. My interpretation of this research is that I have to explore different sources and images which may help me understand the Golden Record more and apply a contemporary style to a new golden record which could be reinvented in my own way. Looking at the original Record will be helpful because I can see how they applied the style of the time onto the golden record. This will help me notice how things have changed and help me realise what the Golden record would look like if I were to re-make it.

The Golden Record : Background- The The Voyager Golden Records were phonograph records which were included on the Voyager’s spacecraft in 1977, they contain sounds, images and music which demonstrates earth and the human race. They are intended to be used for extraterrestrial life forms and if they were to find it the alien race would be able to understand the human race and know that they are not alone in this universe. The record holds diverse images and sounds which can explain life and culture on earth, to name some of the features that appear on the original record range from a “Diagram of continental drift” by Jon Lomberg to music like “Johnny B. People had mixed feelings on the Golden Record when it was schedueled to be launched into space in 1977. Many people thought it was a bad idea and that advertising our world would lead to devostation and invasion from alien craft and because of this the record could only bring misery and heartbreak to our Earth. Other People thought that the Golden record was a brilliant idea, the fact that humans could possibly not be alone in this universe was exciting and making contact with extraterrestrial life was more possible now because of the Golden record.

Carl Sagan’s approach : The Carl Sagan and NASA approach was the Golden record approach which was launched along with the Voyager spacecraft in the hope that alien life would come into contact with it. He used lots of different information displayed on the record to explain the culture and beliefs of humans and planet earth. It is thought that the Voyager and the Golden record will outlive the human race and could last as long as 40 million years travelling through deep space. This would mean that the record would be the only living proof that we exsisted which I find very exciting to think of. Plaque’s were also used like this one with images and symbols which could be understood be an alien race because of the language barrier we may have to face when aliens make contact.

However, I don’t have to take this approach with my re-creation of the Golden record. Animation, Installation and Data visualisation are some of the other routes I could take when thinking of development and an outcome. I could explore different stances on the record some examples could be the development of technology and how it has grown on earth, the Big bang theory and how we have evolved and human emotion.

My focus on the records : The old Phonograph records were designed to let alien life know of our exsistence and tell them a bit about us in order for us to learn things from each other. However I think that the records could mean much more than that, they should be a demonstration of how far we have come and evolved as a species. I think that using imagery with words together is essential and would make the records much more understandable to extra terrestrial life. This is something that I believe the old records didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t convey as well because of the individual images and speeches ect that were included. Using visual techniques with background noise offer a wider range of understanding and is definitley something that the records should possess after all what is the point of creating something that alien life may not understand. This means that using imagery that convey messages are very important they can convey a universal visual language. Infographics, posters and animation are the best at conveying this type of language in overcoming language barriers.

Infographics breakdown : Information Graphics or Infographics as they are better known are used to display information in a creative and clear way which is much more visual in the way than in a book or on a web page. They are very useful for displaying facts using different colours and attractive fonts to make the fact or slice of information look more interesting and visualy appealing.

Why is it a good approach for this project? Because they use information in a visual way an infographic would work well when creating a new set of phonograph records, the infographic could demonstrate anything from life on earth to technology and how we live and survive as a species. There is really no limit to the amount of facts and information that can be displayed on an infographic of this proportion which what makes this approach so popular.

The Illustrations they create are very effective and easy to understand and are normally presented in a time-line manner which makes them easy to follow. There use of iconography is very strong but simple which makes the infographics they create even more succesful because they are easily understood; this all in all makes for a better infographic and a strong design.

The relevance to Earth Artifact : The time-line style works really well with the illustrations, they are clear to follow and offer an easy step by step explanation of people and how to guides. This sort of style works really well with this sort of thing and would work well with the brief as well. Many things could be shown in this style of infographic like the advancement of technology through era to era of a step by step guide explaining how the earth was created. I believe that the true relevance to the brief come from how they can display information in such a way where it is visual and easy to follow this would solve the problem of communication and offer a simple step by step infographic on how the world works.

Iconography is becoming a re-occurring theme in the infographics I have found, I need to research more iconography to see how they are relevant and used in infographics.

Some Infographics like this one based on the 50 unbelievable facts about earth are very long and set out over a custom document that was pre-set to hold lots of information.

Earth Artifact : Iconography Iconography is a simple and effective way of communicating with a target audience or consumer through visual representation. Iconography is a basic symbol that can represent anything itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a quick way of communicating which makes it effective if I used something like this in this project. Iconography is very popular in animation because of there quick visual attributes which work well when put on an animation. I am going to look into iconography more and see if I can take my research further with this.

Adam Whitcroft is an designer who is not well known but has created these beautifully styled icons he has illustrated. I have looked at these icons because they appealed to me the most and I feel that the minimalist design to some of his icons works very well with the thin outline of the icons which offer a more professional and refined look. The icons simplicity makes them even more appealing and would look great on an animation or a motion graphic of the tools working together. The colours are very complimentary and work well together on one icon, the stroke on the icons are very small which is good because the designs look clean cut. This is something I want to try out I think that animation and iconography are the way forward in this project and are the way to get the best inevitable outcome.

Earth Artifact :Iconography in Motion Graphics Icons work great in Motion Graphics, and they are normally used to advertise a small brand or create an illustrated motion graphic of something that they are advertising.

When creating the motion graphic the background is normally a block colour which displays the icon in the centre giving the icon plenty of room this looks professional and clean.

When the full animation of the motion graphic is complete the icon would either play again or turn into another icon; I think that this would be useful because it offers a smooth transition from one icon to another.

The smooth transition of the icon is very succesfull this could be used to tell a story or explain facts about earth through iconography styled transitions!

Patrick Hruby- Illustrator : Patrick Hruby is a freelance Illustrator and designer from Los Angeles, California. On his website it says that he has an appetite for colour and he Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lying! All of his designs are filled with bright colours that contrast creating outstanding final illustrations; The style of illustration he uses are similar to the ones of Janine Rewell. I love the style and the vibrant of his work and how nothing is left understated, I also think that some of his work can be iconized in a simple way to create a bright and visual meaning which connects with the younger ages.

They have created an aray of designs for Route de Soleil a snowbreak getaway holiday location. The designs are immaculate and have a wide variety of different outcomes. The line designs are great and really iconise what the place is all about, the illustration is strong and the Graphic design really portrays what you would expect to find.

Furthermore, I think that the use of colour is well thought out and colours really compliment each other to create an effective logo and brand design outcome. The iconography is very simple which makes it so effective to the consumer, the use of font is great and fits with the line design really well.

They also have created other designs like this one, the illustration is very strong and advertises the brand very successfully. The logo created is in a very icon style which relates to GRAVUAls line designs he has made, the colours are very poppy and are satasfying to look at this joined with the impressive line logo design offers a creative logo/brand.

Rock Village is another one of GRAVUALs designs, this one is a brand design he created posters, leaflets and menu’s for the brand that are all very successful. He again uses line designs and icon styled illustration to make up his branding, he also uses impressive choices of typography which work well along side his illustrations. I am really inspired by his line style of illustration and can definitley see myself using it in this project as a concept idea, using this style of illustration to demonstrate and create a new set of phonograph records which would work well with animation as well as infographic design.

Earth Artifact: Data Visualization The primary goal of Data visualization is very similar to an Infographic which is to communicate information clearly and visually. However we can visualize data in a number of different ways, Pie charts, animation and film are all ways of visualizing data either from memory of visual techniques. Recorded data can be useful in this project as records of the earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s depth, gas, crusts and many more data visualizations. Here are some examples of how data can be visualized and recorded in different ways. Creating some sort of visual record for this project would be quite interesting because of the many ways I could use to actually record the data itself.

Earth Artifact : Project Concept 1

Animation explination : A Motion Graphic/Animation showing how we began and how we inevitabley will end as a race and a planet, the animation would also be a demonstration of how far we have developed as a race.

A possible idea I have come up with already for this animation is the animation I create being played on an Iphone. The Iphone would unlock and the animation of how we began and how we ended, I would create different illustrations that which would appear to animate on my Iphone which would be great.

Having an animation would communicate with the aliens the best if they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand english or any language I believe that the more visual the approach the better in this project. The Big Bang theory is a great explination of how we began I could also incoporate other theories like the creation of the world by GOD and use a mashup of some of the older phonograph records into one animation which best describes the planet earth and our world.

Earth Artifact : Making an Icon Iconography really interest me and I wanted to try out making my own earth icon I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t put too much time into making it the point was to get a feel of what it would take to make each individual icon. Overall I enjoyed this process and felt it went successfully. The first step of creating this earth icon was to use the elipse tool to create a circle for the earth iself, using geometric shapes is really handy for creating objects that have a simple gemotric shape. I used the Pen tool to create the continents on my earth, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to have too many islands because it would overcrowd the elipse and become complicated. Icons should be simple and easy to identify. I then added the continents I created with the pen tool onto the elipse resizing/moving them until I was happy. I then added a shaddow and a highlight to give the icon depth, I felt that this could benefit my icon because it adds another dimension which I like.

Concept 2 : This is a small experiment of how I could show the theory of everything or the big bang theory through this style of timeline work. This is what it would look like, I would use maybe the earth as a planet at the top of the illustration and then show how the earth came to as it is now through small illustration and text in a timeline themed style. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think that this concept would work because of the limitations in style and ideas I could create for this one timeline idea.

I could create a short tieline for every planet in the solar system to give aliens a better understanding of what galaxy we live in.

Plan of ATTACK : A data visualisation project which shows the Aliens where the best place is to attack earth, the data visualisation could show best attack points or places of most importance to us as a human race. What are our most painful fears and weaknesses all this could be shown on a big data visualization which would allow the aliens to attack earth and kill us all. This data visualization would work the best with either in the form of an infographic, a network channel or a 3D construction of the plan of attack!

Earth Artifact : Benefits of using colour

Using block colours rather than lines makes the icon appear more interactive and fun.

An icon had more depth because of the stroke weight which makes the icon pop.

The shadows work better on the icon for adding depth.

The design looks crisper and more shaped it would work better on packaging and Maybe animation.

The icon is less in your face this laid back design offers a much more Relaxed appearance.

Too much block colour can sometimes overwhelm the icon, an icon should be simple like this one.

Project Green DEATH : The concept I am going to take forward is to create an aray of different information graphics using Illustration to tell extraterrestrial life how horrible we really are. I will include how to destroy us, how we are destroying the earth, and the deadliest people which Ill lie as being the queen and other inspirational figures. The idea is to create a new set of phonograph records where I want them to attack earth to make humans seem as bad as possible. SAVE PLANET EARTH. I will make a logo for the activist organisation that will send out the message of destruction, a plan of how to detsroy us and how we are destroying everything around us. I need to find a way of letting them destroy us but nothing else kind of like a nuclear bomb that only works on humans.

I want to create an organization name that would be a play on the fact that something good about earth is in-fact bad. For example “Green peace” a great organization could be changed to “Green death” to add a sort of comical effect to humans.

This is my final logo, I created the logoCreating using Adobe Illustrator a better earth fortrying everyone different fonts with different styles until I found one I was happy with, I also played around with colour and form with layout of text to discover the best solution to colour and layout of my logo. I used a Gradient effect on the GREEN type to symbolise the colur, moreover on top of offering a representational effect it offers a professionalism to the logo which I think is important in convincing people that what I am creating is a real organisation. Earth Artifact : Blueprint research After researching some different blueprints I have found that the colours used vary to whether or not the blueprints are old or new. The newer blue prints normally offer a more vibrant colour and use a much more graphical styled design that fits with the blueprint design as a futuristic look which works well with thing like super heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and other ficticious beings. The older blue prints offer a a duller colour normally a dark blue or purple, this along with the singular white stroke line creates a simplistic look but which is harder to understand the aeshetical outcome normally looks confusing but well designed and very mathematical. I prefer the older darker look, I like the rough style of the singular white line design with the grid method used in the background this overall makes the print look a lot more thought out and all lot more like a blueprint should.

BLUEPRINT STYLE I am going to use AVENIR for my font because of itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s variation in style and how adaptable it is to different colours and background, I think the clear and defining look of the classic blue print can be used on my graphic.

These are the colours I have chosen for my background, I chose these colours after researching into blueprint, I found that white and a dark blue are consistently used in blueprints all of the time.

I could also use more vibrant colours like these with my icons and some of my text which will appear on my graphic blueprint.

Earth Artifact : Blueprint process 1 After looking at a variation of different blue prints I noticed that colour is not important a white object with lines are normaly used for measurements against the dark blue background.

I used a dotted line which I created using the stroke options this seemed to be more aesthetically pleasing and seemed more appropriate for a blueprint. This colour works well with the white the plain background offers a stereotypical blueprint colour which I like.

I am very happy with the colour of the blueprint and after trying a few I feel that this is the one that I am going to use, the white blends nicely and the dotted line gives it a mathematical feel which a straight line wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

Now I am happy with the contours and the colour I can start adding my text, I will use two titling pieces of text above my designs which I could also experiment with dotted lines.

The green was an obvious choice for the title which I think has proved to be effective, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want the titles to e too complex I wanted the design to take over most of the attention on the actual design.

Earth Artifact :The first Infographic This is my first infographic development, in this infographic I want to show facts about HUMANS and where they live, this feels like a good opening infographic for the others that follow.

I will create a false representation of the Human species to make us seem awful, the idea is to try and make the extra terrestrial life attack!

I want to use iconography at some point in this infographic and my own illustration to create a visual infographic that can be understood universally.

I will make a section of the infographic, dedicated to our habitat and where we live this could be filled with facts like what makes up the world, how many people live on it. Where we habitate in earth and so on.

I will also give a misrepresentation of Humans I could add a wrong dictionary meaning explaining how horrible the species is. I could also make sections for facts and styled iconography which visually explains the race as a whole.

Earth Artifact : Infographic development. The background is very important in any infographic, whether it be a basic plain background or a Gradient background. It sets the scene for any infographic and must relate to what is going on in the foreground. This Infographic I have found has inspired me, the infographic uses a Gradient background well to signify a space feel by using black and blue. I also love how the title takes up a lot of space on the infographic, it makes the infographic seem more powerful and creates less room for the facts and designs which I think makes the infographic look more interesting because many facts are compact into one section.

There are 2 types of Gradient background, Linear and Radial. Linear blend one colour to another with a smooth transition, it is much easier to control the linear gradient because of transition from point A to point B.

The Radial gradient is harder to control but still offers a nice effect which can be used on an infographic. However I think that a radial background stands out too much a background should reflect what is being displayed not overpower it.

I used a Linear Gradient because I felt that this had the better effect, the transition from one colour to another is a lot smoother than the Radial gradient and all together works a lot better.

I picked colours that I thought would work well as an association with SPACE, I like how the black overpowers the colour on the blend from the colours; this yet again gives a feeling of outer space.

The black at the top of the infographic would also help me in deciding what colour to use for my title and other information that would be in this section. Obviously a lighter colour maybe a white would work a lot better as the title of my infographic.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to pick one particular colour for all of my infographics, I could use a variation of backgrounds throughout my different infographics. This would be Creating a variation of colour and interest.

These are my favourite three fonts. The first font I really liked was this combination of HELVETICA, I used a Regular HELVETICA font coupled with a Ultra light style to create the variation between the title from the Humans/Habitat to And/There. The Kerning between the letters are good, and even though the letters are very close together on the ULTRALIGHT style of the Helvetica they are still easy to read and distinguish from each other this font works well. This is my second font, I have used AVENIR NEXT for this attempt at a title because of it’s thin style which I like because of it’s underpowering and clean appearance on the page. I again used a variation of different styles to accompany the bolder and thiner sections of the type, this font is very similar to the HELVETICA style but the kerning is slightly bigger between letters. This is my last title experimentation, I have again used a HELVETICA font but used a bolder style to the one I analysed at first. I think that the bold style overpowers the thin ULTRA LIGHT style too much on this title and instead of reading the title as a whole I find myself reading HUMANS/ HABITAT more. I tried an Italic style for the middle section of my title but I don’t think it works as well it almost look like the title is trying too hard.

I made the title of the infographic quite big on the page because I wanted it to take up a lot of space the reasoning behind this was that, there would be the title would stand out a lot more. And the facts would be more compact which I think would make the infographic look more interesting. I decided to use a combination of the 2 fonts because I think that the Helvetica font worked a lot better with the Ultralight/thin style that I wanted to create a contrast between the style of the title.

I used a Linear background because of the blending effect and the simplicity of the background which doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overpower the foreground in any way.

Earth Artifact : Human Illustration

This is my development of the Human illustration I am going to portray in my infographics. I used a reference image I found from the internet to reference from to get n idea of what a gas mask looked like, this in turn helped the illustration come out a lot stronger. First I created the basic shape and features of the mask and now had a basis to build detail on.

Once I had a basis to build detail on, I decided that I needed to use a darker grey to help the design have less contrast, having a darker colour also helped the shadowed appearance of the illustration be emphasised. I also added detail to the eyes with another shadow to add depth to my design, now I think that the design is a lot stronger because of the contrast the shadows create.

I was happy with the depth and the contrast the shadows created but I wasn’t happy with how flat the design looked because I used different shades of Grey. The different shades of grey didn’t work because parts of the shadow wasn’t visable, because of this I decided to use a dark green colour to add another colour but I think that it also adds a better tone to my illustration that the grey colour didn’t offer as well.

HUMAN Illustration: This is the final vector illustration of the Human I created in the form of a gas mask, I added shadows to give more depth to the design and I feel like the illustration is at a stage where I can add it to my first infographic.

I think the illustration is great for portraying how I want to describe the HUMANS to the aliens, I have used darker colour to over emphasis the fact that the humans are a bad species. Dark colour is usually associated with badness which is the reason I have made the illustration darker. Used a green instead of a Grey because now the mask is easy to distinguish from the helmet.

I scaled the illustration and put it into the background this proved effective and the illustration seemed to work well as a background for my title to sit on.

I used a circle for my illustration to sit on because it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stand out well from the rest of the background, using a white circle made it so my illustration would be a lot clearer.

This is the second development of my infographic, in this development I have added the HUMAN illustration onto my design and played around with the layout and size.

The grey background the illustration creates for my title adds another dimension to my background and overall makes the design look more interesting.

I aligned the circle left, this was because I wanted plenty of room for my facts and Icons I would add later on.

The next step of the development process will be to add some icons which I feel best desrcibe the human species.

Firstly I chose to create a Grenade icon to visually symbolize the HUMANS destructive nature, I created a base outline with a stroke weight of 2 to create a strong shape for the icon.

I also chose a deadly symbol icon to symbolize how deadly the humans are, the skull and cross bones symbolize death and a toxic nature which I felt I could use to my advantage when describing the HUMANS.

I used Geometric shapes and the pen tool to create the whole icon, once I was happy with the outline I created a box with a fill which would encase my design. I used an RGB theme style for the boxâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s I felt that these were simple colours and would work well with the white stroke.

I used the same process as the Grenade Icon creating an outline using the pen tool with the same stroke weight, I used the same stroke weight to create a structure of consistency throughout my icons which I felt was really important.

I then used a darker shade of RGB to add a fill to my icons to make them pop more from the background, I then used the Pen tool to create a shadow effect. I did this by using a black fill and altering the opacity.

I used a darker shade of the original background colour instead of a black on this icon it seemed to work better than using the black because it added more depth to the icon.

My last icon I chose was a Gun, a symbol which would represent the violent nature of HUMANS and the weapons they posses. I used the same process of production of the icon the whole way through creating all of the icons in the same way to create a good form and structure, for when I added them to my infographic as a piece of information on my design. This was a much harder icon to illusrate because of itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s complex style, the curved and jagged nature of the gun made it trickier to illustrate but in the end I managed to use the same stroke weight and consistency throughout.

After researching into what a fact file’s contents were I tried to incorporate some of the HUMAN species loves and hates into a small fact-file which I would include onto my info-graphic.

The actual definition of humans describes the nature of the humans and where they extended from, but in my definition I want to utilize how the HUMANS have taken over.

In my actual definition I have described the species as being weaponized, this will help with linking the icons I created previously to the actual definition. I also come across as describing the HUMANS as quite territorial and say that they are unforgiving and thrive on killing other living things.

It certainly appears then that my description of humans is a much more stereotypical than the actual definition, and instead of describing the roots of human kind I described there attributes which are a lot more direct.

I used directional arrows from information pointing to various icons, I felt that the information had to be displayed as obvious and literal so the infographic was more understandable. Added the co-ordinates of EARTH. Nice addition explaining where we were based.

Other small icons with information add other points of interest to my infographic, having these in the design have proved successful. I added a black rectangle, altered the opacity to create a darkened effect this has made the icons appear stronger.

I am again sticking with the idea of giving off a wrong interpretation of human life.

I could create a top ten of the deadliest Humans known to the EARTH, this would be a fun concept to pursuit for this infographic and follows on well from my descriptions of HUMANS being a “Dangerous” species in the first infographic I have created. I will gather more inspiration from Vector Illustration artists I find that characterize real people, this will give me a better understanding of what I want to achieve and the length of time it will take to achieve it.

I plan to show this through vector illustration of different characters that I will class as deadly. These characters in fact won’t be deadly at all and will most likely be illustrations of some of the most peaceful people on earth.

I like the idea of characterizing the Worlds Deadliest humans onto my infographic, vector illustration is something I am also very interested in so the two go hand in hand well.

This is the start of my next info-graphic, my first infographic included some information of the HUMANS and there HABITAT so now that they know a little more about our species and there attributed I think that they need to know who the most destructive Humans are and who best to attack.

Earth Artifact : Vector style Recognizable by what they are wearing, this is a Male Police Officer. We see the moustache and think of man and the uniform says the rest about the person, I want to see if this particular assumption based style can be used to tell an actual person not just a job description.

I need to see if the famous people I am choosing to characterize have any recongizable features that can be easily identifiable by a user.

I like the simple style of these characters are, the various characters are recognisable by a few key things from the character like what they are wearing and there facial appearance. This iconised style is something else I want to try when creating my characters.

Skin colour, facial features, beards, and even eyewear can be used to associate characters to real life people.

MY VECTOR STYLE

There are a lot of different vector styles I can persuit when I am creating my illustrations. Some vector illustrations are a lot more detailed than others and in my case I am trying to make an iconised style of illustrations which will become a theme throughout my infographics.

This type of vector illustration is very complex and uses a variety of different colours to distinguish lighter areas from darker areas of the skin. Geometric shapes are used to piece together the face to create this geometric styled vector illustration.

This type of illustration is made to look very realistic and uses less shapes that the geomtric illustration, the outline of the face is drawn out using the pen tool and then filled with different colour that layers on top of more colour to create an atmosphere using the opacity tool to create light and dark areas.

This type of illustrationfocuses more on how recognisable people are by there facial features and expressions, here Zinedine Zidane is easily recognizable because of his facial expression and how his features are exemplified. A flag is also used to explain further information about the character in a visual expressive way.

This type of illustration is meant to be very iconized and is meant to depict a persons recognizable features rather than be a full illustration. This style simplifies the humans to what there most recognisable attributes are and adds a sterotypical element which I like.

How to kill them.

Earth Artifact : Background choices I have decided to create a theme of the background being the same Gradient style but in a different colour to the others, this theme I have created of the background offers a consistent style which links my infographics together. I could also use the same effect with the title, creating different titles in the same style would link them together and the info-graphics would be thought of as more of as a set which is what I want them all to do.

I love this faded blue gradient and out of the 3 I have is my favourite, I think It is the most like the first one which makes the link between the two infographics more seemingless than the others do.

I don’t think this amber colour is descreat enough to follow on from the first info-graphic, I still like the colour and the line of the gradient but I don’t think that it is the best choice of background to follow on from the first of my infographics.

I don’t like this white Gradient I think that the white is too colourless and the grey isn’t very appealing when changing the black colour to the white colour.

My second infographic is going to be based around the Deadliest Humans in the world, this is my brainstorm of possible titles for my infographic.

Earth Artifact : Background/ title experiments

EARTH or WORLD: After experimenting with some different layouts and colour on my titles, I decided that the gradient effect of the title works really well with the white to emphasise the word EARTH. However after playing around with the title for some time I decided that I could try the same effect with the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;WORLDâ&#x20AC;? and end up with the same effect but with a different title. I think that the title using the word EARTH best describes what the infographic is talking about I think that it ties in with what the entire project is about and relates to the planet directly to cause less confusion. WORLD sounds too much like a guiness world record reference which I am not trying to achieve I like the appearance of the WORLD more so I will decide after I have alligned everything which title I will use.

I used the Ruler tool on illustrator to begin to allign my text, I made font slightly bigger and smaller in some cases using .5 of a pt to make the font fit exacly. I also added different styles to some of the font since my last development, I like this style layout much better than my last one; I added a ULTRALIGHT style to my WORLD text and changed the DEADLIEST type to a style with a much bolder stroke...

... to make the word look more important, I really felt that the word DEADLIEST in this title had to be either highlighted or bolder. I also think that the bold style of the word between the lines make the word look more compact this also makes the title look a lot tighter and influencially cleaner and more professional. The bold style also is very forceful in appearance which relates to the nature of my title because of it’s very direct approach to the infographic.

On the other hand I have used EARTH in the same style as the title using WORLD I don’t feel like it fills the title block as well even though I have used the same pt size as I have on the other title. A solution to this would be to work with the different kerning options available until I have a perfect fit for my title, but I just don’t think that the title would work as well to end with than the “WORLD title.

I don’t dislike the idea of this as my title I just don’t think that EARTH has the same effect as the WORLD option, but I feel that EARTH gives a clearer understanding of what my infographic is about. In conclusion, I think that both have there benefits as my title but the title I am going to take forward is goign to be “THE WORLDS DEADLIEST HUMANS”.

These are the 6 people I am going to use in my worlds deadliest HUMANS graphic and characterise into an icon. I chose people who are obviously not dangerous because my aim is to make them want to attack Humans and give a misrepresentation of our nature.

I have also tried to bare in mind features which make them... recognizable from anyone else. This will make my job of illustrating them easier because I can use there most recognizable features on my character icons. I will use reference images like these I find to look at while im crating my individual characters.

WORLDS DEADLIEST Avenir ULTRALIGHT works very well as a title, it’s easy to read because of it’s distinct letter which stands out from one another and is clear to read. Because the font comes in a lot of different styles I can play around with different styles using the same font.

These are the colours I have chosen for my background, I chose these colours because of there appeal to space. Blue and black work well and could be used as an applied gradient effect sticking with the theme of my first infographic.

These were the different stages of development for my Barack OBAMA icon, I tried to focus on the main features and key aspects of what represents the man himself. I used a striped red background that represents America, adding flags into the backgrounds of the icons isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a bad idea the symbolism helps add another dimension to my designs.

This is the final design for my OBAMA icon, I illustrated the OBAMA character first before creating the circle which my character would sit in. I used different shades of brown to create the skin tone of the character and experimented with various shadows across the face to give the character a different dimension. The shadow also offers an atmospheric look for my character to sit in which makes the design look more interesting. I used colours which were symbolic of America which I think is the word which most associated with Obama, I used the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Draw insideâ&#x20AC;? option to make the designs fit perfectly into my elipse, I then adjusted the designs so that they were centred and aligned with each other. I used a Gold banner to represent a first place prize as an award for being the most dangerous HUMAN.

I adjusted the power bars to make him less of a threat than OBAMA since he is in second place I made the banner a silver/grey colour to represent a second place award that comes about in contests.

I tried to use colours that were symbolic to the person through a flag based idea for the background of the circle which holds my icon, this has worked well in representing where he is from.

This is my the final design for the GANDHI icon, I illustrated the Gandhi character originally on Illustrated using the pen tool and an image of what he looked like as a reference to work from. The image I found and used for reference wasn’t very symmetrical which made it harder to illustrate therefore I illustrated half of the head and then replicated it so to create a “perfect head.”

His glasses and robe are very symbolic of gandhi himself and people think of gandhi when they see these features.

This is the development of my Queen Elizabeth icon, I used the pen tool to create the different features on the icon and started drawing from a reference image I found of the queen. I drew the outlines first which helped me map out where I would put my colour and help me section off each bit of colour from different features. I also added shadows to the face which gave the design more depth.

This is my the final design for the QUEEN icon, Once I have the basis of features for the different icons making new icons are simple. All I have to do is make the new character and then I can simply adjust the circle background and power bars to fit the profile of the Queen. I am very happy with this icon and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overall colour theme, the colour I have used represent england and britain which represents more information which relates to the queen character.

Abraham Lincoln This is the development of my Abraham Lincoln icon, I used the pen tool to create the different features on the icon and started drawing from a reference image I found of Lincoln. Originally I drew him with a hat but then decided that the illustration would be way too big for the circle and the hat wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be visable.

I added a circle or my icon to sit in and used a striped pattern to represent the American flag which I previously used on my Barrack Obama icon.

This is my the final design for the Abraham Lincoln icon overall I am happy with my final design. I used complimentary colour for my circle so that the attention wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t taken away from my illustration. I then used a darker red in my foreground to make the name stand out more because of itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s importance. I think that the different features of the icon work well in displaying the icon in a visually successful way; the aesthetic appeal of the icon is how I wanted it to look and I am very happy with the outcome.

Complimentary colours in the background have a nice effect to sit the illustration on without distracting attention from the foreground.

I think this gives a better representation ofwhat his attributes were.

John Lennon Step 1: I made the outline of the lennon icon using the pen tool using a stroke of 1 so the outline was too heavy. Step 2: After I was happy with the features and the outline I could start adding colour behind the stroke. Step 3: Now that I had colour on my features and outline I could delete my stroke and replace with the colour that was left behind. This made the edge of the illustration less harsh and easy on the eye.

Step 4: After I was happy with the illustration I added the background of the circle and added an outline I chose green to represent Lennonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s peaceful attitude towards music. Step 5: I added the name onto a badge which I added to my icon and centred it so that it was aligned with the circle, I then adjusted the power bars that were on the previous illustration to John lennons Power, danger and Alien hate. Once happy the icon was complete.

This is my the final design for the Lennon icon. Overall I am very happy with how it has turned out, I have kept the colours complimentary so no part of the icon stands out more than the other and the whole icon works well as a whole.

Lighter colours work well to make the features of the icon blend together well.

I also think that this infographic explains what I want it to explain well and overall the graphic strong with a high elements of visual language expressed through colour and icons.

Overall I am very happy with how the infographic has turned out, the layout is successful and the spacing between each icon allows the design to breath more. Furthermore I am happy with the colour pallet I have used, the gradient background is strong and adds depth to my design which also supports the much brighter more aesthetically pleasing icons which I have created for the foreground.

Here is my final outcome for my second infographic, I have added all of the small icons and illustrations to the graphic in this layout after trying a couple of different layout I found that this layout was the most beneficial and filled negetive space on my graphic more thoroughly than any other layout did.

Earth Artifact : Design Content

Content: I need to decide what type of content my design is going to have, I want to create an event that could happen and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want the destruction idea to be too ficticious. I had the idea of having an extermination of humans through technology, for example a phone could send out a signal which sends HUMANS crazy this idea would be inspired by the new Kingsman film. I could refer back to my original concept and try and incoporate the phone into the design rather than the animation I decided not to go through with. slide to learn

Earth Artifact : Background I have decided to create a theme of the background being the same Gradient style but in a different colour to the others, this theme I have created of the background offers a consistent style which links my infographics together. I could also use the same effect with the title, creating different titles in the same style would link them together and the info-graphics would be thought of as more of as a set which is what I want them all to do.

I have already used this background for my last infographic, I think that using the same background twice would be quite silly so I’m not going to use these colour.

I think that the gradient style of this background is good, it’s relevance to this infographic is also good because of it’s fiery appearance which links into my title well. I think I would tweak the colour slightly to try new backgrounds.

I don’t like this white Gradient I think that the white is too colourless and the Grey isn’t very appealing when changing the black colour to the white colour.

Simcard idea: I have an idea of creating a simcard that could possibly be put into a device like a mobile phone which would send out a signal which would some how make the HUMAN race crazy and even more violent this idea would be based around the idea that the deadliest thing to HUMANS are themselves as they attack each other because of the high frequency that the simcard sends. I could also create an illustration explaining how the simcard effect and works on humans. This would be enough for the whole poster/ infographic and i feel I can make the design work through this idea.

Used a simcard title to define the simcard. I looked at the basic structure of a simcard and how the chip is used.

Used a Green colour for the main sim symbolising Project Green.

I added a grain to the cards using an effect in illustrator, I think that this gave more of a realistic effect to the cards.

Earth Artifact : How it works, illustration. This is the how it works illustration I am wanting to use on my outcome, I think that the illustration is easy to follow and demostrates how the destruction of HUMANS will work well through visual attributes.

I have used a dotted stroke design to create the frequency waves that are travelling from the phone which hold the simcard to the HUMAN skull which would get penetrated and destroyed.

I am also happy with the layout of the text and the illustration, the balance of text and illustration is good and nothing is too overpowering which is good; the colour scheme is well coordinated the gradient background works well and adds a more interesting feature to my design which displays my different illustration successfully.
