CHURCHWORKS 2020 RESOURCE GUIDE WELCOME TO CHURCHWORKS 2020

ChurchWorks 2020 will center on how clergy can most effectively focus on their own wellbeing. A time to think about caring for yourself in different ways; space for you to come and take a break from the day-to-day work, to network, to connect, to relax and to be renewed in your work as a minister.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER SUSAN SPARKS

Pastor, Madison Avenue Baptist Church, NYC “Laughter in the Vestibule” | “Laughter in the Temple” | “Laughter in the Holy of Holies” As a trial lawyer turned standup comedian and Baptist minister, Susan Sparks is America’s only female comedian with a pulpit. A North Carolina native, Susan received her B.A. at the University of North Carolina and a law degree from Wake Forest University. After ten years as a lawyer moonlighting as a standup, she left her practice and spent two years on a solo trip around the world, including working with Mother Teresa’s mission in Calcutta, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and driving her Jeep Wrangler solo from NYC to Alaska. Upon returning home, she entered Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where she earned a Master of Divinity and wrote an honors thesis on humor and religion. In May 2007 Susan was installed as the 15th Senior Minister of the historic Madison Avenue Baptist Church in New York City. She was the first woman pastor in its 170-year history and she remains there to this day. (Y’all come visit!) A professional comedian, Susan tours nationally with a stand-up Rabbi and a Muslim comic in the Laugh in Peace Tour. In addition to her speaking and preaching, Susan writes an award-winning nationally syndicated column through Gate House Media distributed to over 600 newspapers reaching over 21 million people in 36 states. She is the author of Laugh Your Way to Grace: Reclaiming the Spiritual Power of Humor and Preaching Punchlines: The Ten Commandments of Comedy. Most importantly, Susan and her husband Toby love to fly-fish, ride their Harleys, eat good BBQ, and root for North Carolina Basketball and the Green Bay Packers.

SPECIAL GUESTS THE LAUGH IN PEACE COMEDY TOUR Monday 6:00 – 7:30 pm Bob Alper, Gibran Saleem, Susan Sparks

A Rabbi, a Muslim, and a Baptist preacher walk into a room. (Rim shot!) Yes, it is the setup for a joke, but not like you expect. Comedian/Rabbi Bob Alper, Muslim comic Gibran Saleem, and ex-lawyer, turned Baptist minister and standup comedian Susan Sparks taking the stage for the Laugh In 4

Peace Tour. Appearing everywhere from The World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC to the Palestinian Fest in Houston, Texas, to Congregation Tifereth Israel in Columbus, Ohio, the goal of the tour is to build bridges and reconcile differences through humor. The three of us believe that humor may be the quickest way to world peace. Given the current headlines, it’s hard to imagine a message the world needs more. Will we change the world overnight? No. Will we start a ripple effect that may eventually change the way we see each other? Maybe. All we can do is offer the gifts we’ve been given in a way that leaves the world a little better than we found it. It’s our best effort at world peace; world peace, that is, one joke at a time.

CAITLYN ROGERS

Music Leader Associate Campus Minister for Missions & Ministry, Campbell University Caitlyn graduated from Campbell University with a degree in Religion. After graduation she packed a 45-pound backpack and traveled to 11 countries to experience how Jesus was working and moving around the world. Caitlyn loves traveling, hearing people’s stories, and is always down for a day at the beach. EMOTIONAL WELLBEING Val Fisk – The Enneagram: What Comes After My Number? Music Suite “C” (Level 3, Old Sanctuary Building) The Enneagram is all over the place. Quite a few of us now know what our type is, but what do we do with that information? Why does it matter? How can we learn and grow, continue developing through study of the Enneagram? This workshop will focus on what to do next, and will feature a panel of various types discussing what about their number helps and hinders in their personal and professional lives. You will walk away with a few practical recommendations for how to incorporate the wisdom of the Enneagram into your daily life, allowing this to engage all layers of wellness and health.

FINANCIAL WELLBEING Rob Fox and Bo Prosser – Money, Money, Money! Past, Present, and Future Hutson Chapel (Level 3, Lynwood Building) We will examine where you are with your finances, how you got here and how you need to prepare for your future. Bo Prosser is the Director of the CBF Ministerial Excellence Initiative. Rob Fox is President of CBF Church Benefits.

MENTAL WELLBEING Julie Long – Using Coaching for the Wellbeing of Yourself and Others Youth Room - Judah (Level 3, Broadway Building) Coaching empowers people to see their gifts, discover their potential, and claim their power to be their best selves. In this workshop, learn more about how coaching can help you develop as a leader and learn some basic coaching skills to put to use as you minister with others.

PHYSICAL WELLBEING Deborah Garrard - Pastors and Potluck: A Match Made in Heaven? Youth Room - Israel (Level 3, Broadway Building) Founder of Bee Well Serve Well and a Psychology of Eating Coach, Deborah is trained as a Mind-Body-Spirit Eating Consultant and also certified in Whole Food, Plant-based Nutrition through 6 Cornell University’s Center for Nutrition Studies.

I’m not selling a product, representing a brand or pushing the latest trend. To me, health is wholeness. It’s not about the right food or a right-sized body. It’s about real people – like you and me! – living real lives, eating real food and learning to live through the real challenges life brings that threaten our health, our joy, and our call to serve. From a spiritual perspective, I believe health is reclaiming our God-ordained wholeness. And so, I invite you to lean into a life where being mindful is your default setting, eating is a spiritual practice, and serving others is an organic result of your own healing.

PHYSICAL WELLBEING Vicky Shelton and Mary Nelle Glenn – Yoga Yoga Room (Level 4, Lynwood Building) Enjoy a yoga session led by local yoga instructors. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes and take some time to care for your physical wellbeing

SPIRITUAL WELLBEING Blake Kendrick – Retreat! How a 5-day Retreat Rescued My Pastoral Career Children’s Suite (Level 2, Broadway Building) The pastoral life is demanding. How do I juggle meetings, funerals, weddings, bible studies, newsletter articles, sermons, and “other duties as required?” In 2007, I was drowning in busyness, not certain that I could sustain a life of pastoral ministry. And then I attended a 5-day retreat (cosponsored by the CBF) that forever changed the trajectory of my life. In this breakout, I will share my story, and I’ll do my best to convince others to plan annual retreats for sabbath and sanity’s sake.

Blake is the Minister for Adult Discipleship at Providence in Charlotte, NC. In the past, Blake served on the Leadership Team of the Academy for Spiritual Formation – an international partnership of The Upper Room and the United Methodist Church. He has found his work with this Academy to be among the most formative, challenging, and rewarding of his professional career. In 2008, he attended his first Five-Day Academy in Atlanta. This experience led him to pursue the Two-Year Academy in Alabama from 2009-2011. Then, in 2011, he was invited to join the Academy’s Leadership Team. In 2018, he was invited to join the Academy’s International Mentors Network.
