abstract the new world children This is a story of secret societies and the future of humankind. As the title suggests, this final major project can be divided into two topic areas, the “New World” section, which explores conspiracy theories about different secret societies and their “New World Plan”, while the “Children” section focuses on children wear. The collection is presented as a Autumn/ Winter collection. The label is positioned at a independent designer market, Paris and Japan. The collection is composed of comfortable fabrics in pastel colours and exaggerated silhouettes, and convey both fun and a sense of humour brought to the audience throughout the line-up.

introduction the Journey of world Transformation This collection takes inspiration from the notion of the power of secret societies and aims to deliver a warning message and illustrate helplessness of human when under the domination of the secret societies and the New World Order. This collection has taken a rather unusual direction to interpret the topic, and uses the image of children, and their naivety, to represent manipulation in today’s world metaphorically. On top of that, it has integrated elements from workers/ work wear into the designs, which also symbolizes manipulation in the society.
“This present window of opportunity which during a truly peaceful and interdependent world order might be built will not be open for too long. Already there are powerful forces at work that threaten to destroy all of our hopes and efforts “ David Rockefeller, speech gave at the UN, 1995
Research and analysis have taken a particularly crucial position in this project, as large amount of information and references are available online, and unsubstantiated claims are also commonly found from these sources that required careful selection. As the topic is closely related to today’s social and current issues, researching through news and documentaries is inevitable. Apart from books, site-visits and films are as interesting, and have contributed considerable amount of information and knowledge. Most importantly, since conspiracy theories are majorly built up and spread through information technology, most information is obtained through the Internet.
A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick
The Genesis of the project was initiated by one of the most controversial films by Stanley Kubrick, A Clockwork Orange, which has deeply attracted me by its unique-styled costumes from the “future London”. The costumes of the main characters consist of a “nappy” feature, which through later research and development have inspired me with the interpretation of the topic. However, what most fascinated me after viewing several films of Kubrick’s such as Eyes Wide Shut, is the huge amount of symbols he used, which led me to look into the meanings and found out that Kubrick has been trying to expose secrets of societies like Illuminati, Freemason, and the Bilderberg Group.

In futuristic London, Alex is the leader of a youth gang in the decaying metropolis. One night, after engaging in various “ultra-violence” incidents, he was betrayed by his gang. During sentence, Alex volunteered to be tested for the Ludovico, an experimental aversion therapy to rehabilitate criminals. He is forced to watch crime scenes to make him sick. Alex is released after a proven he is “cured”, he was rejected by his parents and abused by his gang. He was manipulated as a political weapon, but ended up by throwing himself from the window to escape the control. Therefore, the Minister of the Interior apologizes to Alex for the brainwashing project and offers him a job, in return for a good image for the government and to make up for the political mistake. At the end, Alex has gained a “new life”, but in fact became a sacrifice and puppet forever.
Figure 12
What is New World Order? Discovering A New World
While looking into secret societies and various conspiracy theories, one topic that commonly relates to them is the “New World Order” plan.
The concept of “New World Order” was first introduced in Samuel Zane Batten’s publication in 1919 (Battern, 1919). In the book, Batten advocates social control and the socialization of society at large. He declares ‘world patriotism’ must be created and it must be a religious faith and international peace must also be a religious faith. ‘’The only alternative is World Federation with a world parliament, and international court, and an international police force,” Batten claims.
In a modern interpretation (from post-world war), the concept is commonly referring to a small group of world elite or a centralized authority to gain power through various means, including, -Initiating wars (to eliminate and to keep human race to small group of elite) -Controlling over media and information flow -Control over education (to control the educated size as power of knowledge has growing importance) -Control over resources (to control population, economic and politics) -Control over economy in order to gain absolute control on human race.(Directrelationships with items above and it is where these secret powers are currently gaining power from) Additionally, Illuminati’s interpretation has a further meaning that, - Absolution of all monarchies and patriotism - Elimination of private property and inheritance - Destruction of the traditional family - Eradication of all religion Today, New World Order is not only a vague concept, but it has also gradually developed into a major alternative explanation to many current affairs (usually unfortunate events), for instance, diseases, economic downturn, unsupported political decisions, and wars.

Figure 19
Figure 20
Picking “New World Order” as project topic and interpreting through children wear is an adventurous decision. However, after considering the pros and cons, it was finally chosen due to 5 main reasons.
1.
Firstly, the topic was chosen for personal interest. Instead of deliberately picking a project title, the topic has brought much interest and enjoyment while researching and development. Initially, the research of Kubrick’s works and secret societies was not “project-driven”, but simply out of interest and curiosity. This enabled the research to be more diversed without restrictions to fashion or visual references. As a result, working with a topic of personal interest also brought own interpretations and individualism into the project, thus able to produce a collection that expresses the designer’s view and thoughts and helps to build a collection with character.
2.
Secondly, the concept of interpreting secret societies such as Illuminati on fashion has been increasingly blatant in the market, (see Kenzo), although it has become a trend, this can also be seen as a challenge to interpret and produce a unique collection. In this case, the collection has taken an unusual direction of integrating children and workers clothes, rather than presenting the topic literally with print. Furthermore, the childrenwear approach helps creating a humorous twist with interesting silhouettes to surprises audience. As a result, the ironic and unusual interpretation has added uniqueness and characteristic to allow the collection to distinguish and stand out. The other reason to pick children and worker wear is that, it is very hard and vague to create a collection solely based on the concept of New World Order, therefore the children and worker wear have provided more direct and visual references to contribute in designing silhouette, colour, and texture.
3.
Thirdly, the topic allows fashion as a medium to express ideas and to convey messages in order to interact with audience. In this collection, one of the key messages is that, through consumption and media, most people in today’s society has become a manipulated object, as they all persue certain lifestyle, value, and the reliance on technology and superior goods is controlling minds. This is exactly how the New World Order is planned to achieve. As a result, the collection has a statement to make and a mission to warn and remind the audience to be cautious about people and things in life, as well as to treasure love and relationships.

Figure 23
Figure 24
Figure 25
Figure 26
“Our job is to give people not what they want, but what we decide they ought to have. Richard Salant, former president, CBS News
4.
Fourthly, since the topic is rather controversial and related to real life, it has brought the collection closer to the audience, which generates attention and interests. Through establishing interactions with the audience, the collection encourages engagement between the topic and the audience to think that they are all under this circumstance and living as part of the New World Order movement. So in a way, the topic is attractive and interesting to audience and customers.
5. Lastly, by considering its market value and strategies, the collection does not only present with an avantgarde independent label, but it also promotes itself as a label with ideas and viewpoints of today’s society, while whoever wears the collection are given an identity of certain believes, attitudes, and social awareness.
Interpretation of r For the design process, it is divided into 4 different areas, with each requiring extensive research and careful consideration in order to justify decisions and to produce a successful collection.
Figure 27-30
1. Silhouette and Proportion As the collection aims to deliver a message of human manipulation by the great powers in today’s society, all under garments including tops and bottoms will be taking references from characters of A Clockwork Orange and children wear, with a slim fit silhouette featuring children wear details. These garments are designed and produced to fascilitate body-movements. Metaphorically, The unified silhouette symbolizes a group of manipulated individuals that are controlled when under the New World Order, which has a similiar image as prisoners or clones without independent thinking and character.

Figure 34
For outer garments, all of them will be constructed with a bold and oversized silhouette, which symbolize superior-powers swallowing/ suppressing the helpless. The exaggerated silhouette may also create greater impact to attract audience.
Figure 32
Figure 33
Figure 35
Figure 36
2. Colours In order to achieve an over-all unified impression through under garments, all tops and bottoms will be made with white and natural colour fabrics. For outer wear, pastel colours is undeniably the most suitable palette to match with a children wear inspired collection. In A Clockwork Orange, whenever Alex is being used or treated as a tool, he will be wearing colourful outerwear on top of his plain under garments. In this case, pastel colours appear to have a dreamy and sweet feeling, symbolizing greater powers controlling over public with sweet lies and ideal concepts.
Figure 38 33
Figure 39
3. Fabric and Texture Throughout the collection, a variety of soft and stretchable fabrics will be used, such as sweatshirt jersey and neoprene. These fabrics are commonly found on children clothes since they are easy to wear and the softness gives extra care to children bodies. Toweling and soft textured fabrics will also be used to create variations and contrasts in texture. To achieve oversized silhouette, wadding will be inserted and to create a puffed and soft handling. As the collection aims to provide a relaxed and comfortable experience for the customer, instead of lining the garments, some of them will be bonded with soft-texture fabrics on the wrong side. For accessories like gloves, socks and bags, knit and embroidery will be applied to highlight the collection.
Figure 44-47
4. Treatments and Trimmings Trimming is a very important element to reinforce the image of children wear throughout the collection. In this case, there are specific trimmings that must or must not be used. Taking consideration of protection and giving extra care to children, zips, metal trimmings or fastenings should not be used, as they consists of sharp parts which are easy to harm the body. Instead, snap buttons or button hole-buttons shall be used. To achieve extra flexibility of under garments, ribs and elastics will be used throughout the collection. Due to the reason that pastel colour fabrics are not easily to find, dyeing processes and fabric-bonding will also take place particiularly on toweling and other textured fabrics.

Marketing
Figure 50-52
Apart from considering design factors, as a designer label, knowing the label’s position in the market and analyzing marketing strategies are as important in order to create a successful collection. As an independent designer label, it is crucial to market itself with strong character and clear direction. From this collection, it can tell that the label is striving for high input of creativity. It aims at a high street market in both Paris and Japan, where avant-garde fashion and styling is more commonly acceptable. In fact, existing labels such as Walter van Beirendonck, Bernhard Willhelm, Henrik Vibskov, and Peter Jensen are quite similar competitors in terms of style, however the unique selling point of each label is different. This collection is about its unusual interpretation of current affairs and its translation on fashion. For sales, the label will be selling its collections through retailers from worldwide and on the Internet, for instance, Dover Street Market in Japan and London, I.T. in Greater China, Machine-A and LN-CC in London, while Oki-ni and Fake Tokyo will be selling on the Internet.
S.W.O.T. Analysis Strength:
Weakness:
The label is creative and innovative, especially in terms of colour, pattern, silhouette, and concept. It also carries showpieces that favour sales to bloggers, stylists, and fashion icons. All these can increase chance to be featured on editorials and publications.
To create a complicated and innovative collection, high cost of production costs such as developing patterns and sourcing specific fabrics are inevitable, hence resulted in limited production amount and sky-high retail prices.
Opportunity:
Threat:
A series of accessories such as gloves, socks, arm warmers, and bags can be produced at relatively low costs as the label does not stress on quality fabrics but focuses on creative concepts and innovative designs. Also, diffusion line can produce rather basic and more practical items to increase income. As a label that does not only promote fashion, there are opportunities to collaborate or to produce art pieces such as installations for exhibitions or displays to add value to the label.
Due to the reason that the label is relatively not wearable nor suit the general fashion market, sales might not be ideal and it will require high input of time, effort and capital to build up at initial stage. Furthermore, existing competitors are strong enough to dominate the market, therefore the accessibility to the avant-garde market is very low and competition is keen.

methods As the project topic requires a great amount of research through various means, this section will be discussing on how these researches were conducted and how useful they are to the collection. Some of these methods might not be presented in this design report nor have any direct relationship with the outcome, however they have provided information to have better understanding and knowledge of the topic.

The movie is the starting point of the research, which has taken the most important role in developing the concept for the whole project. The movie is ostensibly describing a story of a teenager, who has been betrayed, forced to be brain-washed and ended up living the rest of his life without a soul. However, what Kubrick was trying to convey is a journey through difficulties and bitterness in life, metaphorically describing today’s society where people are being manipulated and suppressed. The movie has totally opened up a new perspective on viewing today’s world, plus suggesting New World Order, an alternative way to explain how and why events happen in today’s world. Apart from the film, research at the Stanley Kubrick’s archive at London College of Communication was a precious experience and it was very beneficial as a primary research to learn more about the styling ideas through studying props and costumes from the movie.
Figure 54
In spite of inspiring by the iconic and futuristic costumes, the most familiar eye icon has also led to further exploration of secret societies and the idea of manipulation.
2. they live by john carpenter (secondary) They Live is an American movie directed by John Carpenter in 1988. The plot illustrates a pair of sunglasses that could reveal a world runs by Capitalist Aliens, intended to rule over human race by brainwashing the society with subliminal messages fed through media advertising. The interpretation of manipulation idea in the movie is straightforward, which a lot of literal visual translations have been made. As a result, the movie has contributed a lot of visual references and stimulated for more crazy ideas for design and development of the collection. The movie also helped the development of accessories such as the face mask.

3. The new world order by samuel zane battern This publication by Samuel Zane Battern is one of the earliest and most important resources to study about the New World Order. Although there are differences between the book and today’s interpretation from conspiracy theories, the book had first introduced the concept and laid the foundation of the concept that enabled later interpretation by conspiracy theories and secret societies. By studying the book, it describes the initial interpretation of the concept, how the concept was born, and by studying the different interpretations, it gives a better idea of how and why it has become the major objective of the secret societies today.
Figure 57
4. united grand lodge of england Vising the United Grand Lodge of the Freemason was an exceptional experience and it has been very beneficial to the research regarding Freemason. The library of the United Grand Lodge includes an exhibition of a variety of objects from the Masons, including ceramics, books, costumes, furnitures, and accessories, all consists of their symbols, (or possibly hidden messages). During the visit, one of the most fascinating parts is a short tour to visit the Grand Hall, in which the tour guide explained the “decorative” symbols and introduced their history. Not only learning more about the organization and their believes, but also listening from the perspective from the Mason enabled a more thorough analysis and able to compare with other resources’ interpretations. For instance, according to the tour guide that, the sun and moon symbols represent wisdom, while other resources claimed that Masons worship them in order to gain the power of ‘balance’. These symbols and shapes will also be appearing throughout the collection as design features.
5. gaiety is the most outstanding feature of the soviet union saatchi gallery (21 nov 2012 - 9 june 2013) Gaiety Is The Most Outstanding Feature of the Soviet Union (21 NOV 2012 – 9 JUNE 2013) was an art exhibition dedicated to Russian artists and photographers held in Saatchi Gallery in London. The exhibition featured artworks including installations, paintings, drawings and photographs from the Soviet Union era, enabling audience to understand and learn about life during the iron-curtained period. One of the world-famous photographers, Boris Mikhailov, has featured some of his most impact works at the exhibition. His works mainly focus on capturing the most realistic perspective of life, which many of the photographs have revealed a raw, sick, and poor side of the Soviet Union. Greartly inspired by his photography, the collection has integrated with the element of worker wear, which reinforced the idea of manipulation in the society.

6. papier mache Papier Mache is an Australian monthly magazine that specializes in children fashion and related information. Through reading the magazine, readers are able to learn about the latest trends of children wear, as well as market information, such as retailers, product prices and related websites. The magazine is fantastic because of its creatively-styled photographs, with more than 70% of the pages are filled with colourful drawings and inspirational images. Therefore, it is a very essential source to contribute with ideas relating to children wear, colour, and fabric. It also shows that although children clothes are simple, yet pairing with interesting accessories can create a much more interesting and different look, which helps developing accessories for the collection.

New World Children is a project that is based on considerable amount of research, creative inputs
and has gone through thorough analysis to justify every decision in designing and developing the collection. The body of research contains abundant information based on documentaries, books, movies, exhibitions, and most importantly online resources in order to create the collection. On top of that, during the analysis of collected information from a wide variety of research, it has also encouraged a creative, interesting, and surprising interpretion of the topic. The collection is dark in its concept, illustrating the hopelessness of humanrace when under the New World Order manipulation in today’s society; however, visually, it is presenting in a bright, fun, interpretation by using a candy colour palette and exaggerated, fun silhouettes. On one hand, the contrast has added visual attractiveness, but on the other hand it has also create room for audience to interpret the intention of this interpretation, whether it is to convey the message in an ironic approach, or suggesting an optimistic perspective towards the conspiracy theories. At the end, the collection does not only aim to be a great and interesting collection, but also intend to make a statement and encourage audience to reflect on the topic. Fashion is always to be seen as shallow, however what the general public has omitted is that, fashion does provide a person with identity, attitude, and a sense of belonging to certain believes, which could shape a person’s mentality and character. All in all, the project is based on high amount of creative and information input in order to achieve an exceptional, meaningful, and successful collection.

To conclude my 3 years of university life, achieving a successful final major project is my the first priority of the year; therefore, started from the beginning of the research, to the Research Method assignment, to the 10 slides presentation, I have been desperately striving for my best to justify and present a well-thought concept for the collection. Looking back at what I have achieved so far, the considerable amount of background and visual research and analysis has been done. Although all my collected research may not have a chance to present in the project or presentation, the research process has trained up my research skills and allowed me to gain more knowledge from the topic. These information also enabled me to justify decisions about designing the collection in a more thoughtful way. As the project title suggests, the topic is closely related to daily lives and social issues, learning and researching the subject has also raised my social awareness, as well as reflecting on myself, of how today’s world runs and in what way I could make a difference as a designer. From that, I have tried to take the project to a new level. I have decided not only to design a collection inspired by social issues, but also aims to raise awareness from the public and to remind audience about people and things happening around us through fashion. Undeniably, most of the time when it comes to research, the most direct way is the Internet. Although the Internet is easy accessible and the amount of information provided can not be estimated, the reliability of online resources are often being questioned. However, as the project topic is based on conspiracy theories, which the Internet is the main platform for spreading related information or rumours, obtaining research online is now the best way. Apart from that, as a conclusion of my 20 years of studying, I hope to make a step forward from what I previously heavily relied on and try on different researching methods. For this reason, I have visited the Stanley Kubrick archive, the United Grand Lodge, and various exhibitions in order not only to obtain more information, but also to stimulate creativity, personal feelings and interpretations through physical interacting with the matters. I am glad that I have done this at the last minute. This reminds me the fact that nowadays what the world has overseen is physical relationships and interactions. Although nowadays media seems to be able to replace or even more better than what is available in physical world, it cannot replace or immitate personal feelings. As designer, I learnt that this is critical and helpful to design or to create anything with character and personal perspective. This is the best lesson that I have learnt in this project so far. As the project has only gone half way through, it is essential to assess my strengths and weaknesses in prepare for more tasks and challenges in the future, mainly concerning the making and production of the collection. Research has always been my strength, although the amount of collected research from this project is much more than I expected, I have managed to start early and completed the main body of research during summer, which allowed me to focus more on developing and designing the line-up. My other strength is deciding fabrication, which I have shown my capability and confidence of choosing the right fabrication that best suit the collection in my second year. This time, although the fabric choices are limited due to the restrictions of the pastel colour palette, I will solve the problem by bonding fabrics in order to create suitable fabrics while buying fabrics from Hong Kong (where I will be producing my collection) cab also provide me with much more choices with lower costs. As I deeply know, my major weakness is time management, which restricts me from achieving higher goals in the past two years. From previous experiences, I have always spent much time on 2D than 3D, mainly due to the lack of skills that I avoided to work with machines. To tackle the problem, I have drafted weekly checklists for myself, which is based on the critical path, to remind myself and stress on the importance of completing certain amount of work each week as it is critical for achieving a long term project. To conclude, this project does not only help widen my horizon, but it is also beneficial in learning and developing my own working methods and skills, such as how to get inspired from things happenings in life, and various skills that help preparing for the rest of the project and future practice in the industry.
