EXPERIMENTING WITH FOOD

EDIBLE CUBES

5

Our first assignment was to make edible cubes. The dimensions had to be 2cm x 2cm x 2cm. I did a lot of experiments with gelatin and different ingredients before coming to my final combination. I have a deep interest in food so for me this was a great first assignment, it was nice to experiment with composition and creating sometimes unrecognizeable food.

7

9

Outcome I was quite happy with the outcomes from the experiments. Although I would need to play around with the composition more so that it doesn’t taste so watery (I used gelatin to bind the ingredients which makes it taste watery) I like the thought of having it as something which would go with bread, so you would cut a bit and spread it on your bread, then you have kind of a cheeseboard all in one.

TECHSPERIMENTS EXPERIMENTING WITH TECHNOLOGY

13

15

Our second assignment was to follow Arvind Gupta’s channel on youtube and visit his toys from trash website to introduce ourselves to science and technology.

19

After finishing the assignment I did some of my own experiements into speakers. I gained the confidence to take a part and play with electrical equipment so I went to emmaus and bought some old speakers, took them apart to see how they were working and experimented with making my own. After a few hours I made a speaker with a volume comparable to a mobile phone speaker.

MAPPING THE ACADEMY RESEARCH AND DRAWING

23

I would like to open up the Academy, make it easier to know what is going on in the different departments and compass, know who is teaching and who we can go to for advice, and make it more social

SOCIAL LEARNING SPACE

25

I would like more transparent modules (like the meeting rooms on the third floor/glass box) to allow privacy but also the ability for other students to see what you are doing and how you are working. Also to make comfortable areas so you can work on small projects/digital work.

Our fourth assignment was to build the Academy, how we would like it to be, in Minecraft.

copy & paste Hello Peter, I have been thinking about my direction for the assignment and thought of changing the way I research the resources, I think I will go down more the route of copy and paste. Like my idea with the skateboard, and after reading this article I also found it is also similar to your assignment in the first year. I want to come to school with objects made from different materials, reflecting the workshops we have at the school, so wood, metal, plastic, textile, digital and silkscreen. I will come with an object, research how it is made to have basic knowledge then come to school and see if, with help from the instructors, it is possible to make them. Where the gaps are in our workshops and where I need to go to do it. 39

as soon as i decided to create a project connected with nature i wanted to talk with someone involved in the next nature department at the tu/e, see what the assignments were, how the projects are judged, and the idea behind next nature as a company. i was really surprised that i was able to interview koert, and that he gave me time and we could have a nice conversation. i realised our views and opinions on nature are quite different, but this was a great experience.

CESARE GRIFFA

i saw this project during the dutch design week and quite liked it. it isn’t the most attractive thing i saw but i was interested because it was dealing with something that i was interested in and was trying to bring algae cultivation into the home through open-source templates, instructions and software. when i started getting more into my project and was struggling with finding a good source of edible algae i sent them an email to see where they got theres. “i’m glad you enjoyed the project. in my experience the best place to buy algae in europe is ccap.ac.uk. easiest to culture is the chlorella.” 55

REALISATION

IT’S MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THEN I THOUGHT..

59

i wanted to contact alumni from the design academy to see what they are doing now and howtheir projects have evolved. i remembered seeing this project from lukas so i looked through the graduation book until i saw his contact. i sent him an email and he was happy to show me his work, he lives really close to me so i first went to his place then to his atelier. we spoke about the filtering properties of ceramic and how to work with the material.

STACKING CERAMIC AND GLASS

PIADESIGN

i was searching for designers that were already combining ceramics with glass to get some advice, i have hardly worked with ceramics and never with glass so it is something very new for me, especially making a combination. i sent an email and got quite a quick response. “it’s tricky, make the ceramics first and fit the hot glass to the ceramic. make sure you keep the ceramic round when drying and firing.

Lotte Douwes

M&Living Alumni, Ceramic studio

lotte is a regular customer at monk, since i started working there we have become quite close. i knew she had a design studio where she works with ceramics so while at work i thought it was the perfect oppertunity to show her my sketches and get some feedback on the shapes and ideas i had. she gave me some good advice to really consider the reason for the shape, “look at nature, be inspired. what makes this object for collecting water and this object for storing it?

69

i had a meeting with pierluigi at school. whe nothing about shape. how to pick a shape cared about shape before but when it came sibilities that i didnt kn

en i started to make drawings i realised that i knew e, what a shape means, or why it matter. i never e down to drawing one, there were so many posnow where to start, or end.

i showed him my ideas and drawings and we spoke for some time about connections and joints. about the prominence of the stacking and the filter, shape, size, and tappering. it was really good to think differently about my choices, and to realise how easy it is to meet with and get advice from teachers around school.

EXPERIMENTS WITH MATERIAS

Atelier NL

i met with lonny from atelier nl to talk about their experiments with and combinations of glass and ceramics. i had never been to the studio before so it was great to get the oppertunity to see what they are working on and have a personal talk. she taught me the difference between lab glass and conventional blowing glss, and will contact the glassblower to see if he would be interested in working with me. “with lab glass you can get this amazing detail that they cannot do at leerdam for example. the guy who blew all of our glass is an expert at whay he does, he doesnt use moulds, he just does it by sight.

experiments with shapes AND MATERIAL

79

To begin my shape study I did some rough drawin trol the final shape, I wanted to at least get down oped into more controlled and conscious d

ngs, although I thought I didn’t really want to conn my ideas of how it could be. These then develdecisions on shape, size, proportions etc.

81

83

85

to begin my material study I looked at combining glass and clay in a fairly primal way, I took pre-existing glass shapes, lightbulbs, I took out the electrical components and used clay and tubes to look at how the system could work, whether the tube should be at the top or the bottom, how it would work with harvesting and adding air.

87

using wire to try and capture freedom of an organic shape, lines, shadows, light allow you to see many different forms at the same time.

89

i went to emmaus and bought some different size, sh experiment with the stacking and see h together.

i was quite nervous about making a nice shape b

hape and colour glass objects so that i could how/if certain shapes work well r.

because i have no experience in this area 91

93

i decided to carry on with my shape studies using card and paper. i saw what the students had been doing in atelier and thought that it would be good for me to start where they started, experimenting with different scales and feelings of the shapes. in the end i didn’t exactly have realistic representations of the shape or size i want to use, but i think it was a good practice and helped raise my awareness of how the smallest difference can be quite prominant to the overall feel of the object.

95

i then started making different combinations of glass, paper and card. looking at how different sizes, shapes and materials interact with eachother.

WORKING WITH CLAY

99

my project envolves experimenting with ceramics. Although working with ceramics always takes some experimenting - is the mold thick enough? How long does it take to get the desired thickness? How long does it take to dry? How much does it shrink? I have the added experiment of finding the right clay-tosawdust ratio. After some trials I got the mixing right and finally poured all my trials so I can decide on the composition of the filter.

MAKING MY OWN SLIP CLAY

I want to work with a combination of materials, glass, clay and terra-cotta. I need to do experimets with shrinkage and different combinations, because I found terra-cotta but only in clay body and not casting slip. Since I already bought the clay body I don’t want to buy it in slip form so I will try to make my own.

IN ORDER TO GIVE THE FILTER ANTI-BACTERIAL PROPERTIES IT IS NECESSARY TO IMPREGINATE COLLOIDAL SILVER INTO THE POURS OF THE CLAY. SINCE I DIDNT WANT TO PAY SO MUCH AND DIDNT WANT TO WAIT FOR DELIVERY I THOUGHT I COULD MAKE IT MYSELF

1 - I learnt to embrace what is happening now in the design wo someone else, to contact these people and not be afraid that Also I learned more about working with ceramics and will learn useful.

2 - I think it has in the way of using the resources and people a in the workshop, to approach teachers that I don’t have to get niques in a way that fits with my fascinations and my views on w

3 - I think like I said in the first point that this communication a using them for example with my leisure project I am now organ I can get some outside advice on my work.

4 - I think my results (so far) are quite good. I experimented wi and processes, I processed information and research, I docum gained skills which are really useful for me as a designer.

5 - I think my best project is the process of collecting and using (hopefully) in a working water filter, but the result in the end is into practice.

I think my worst project was the minecraft model of the school pletely gone. At the time I was excited to make a modular syst the school, so I really liked the idea but I failed to visualise/ma

6 - I actually do want to do lab again, I think that I would pay m these fascinations from the beginning, rather then getting ove because I think if I focused from the beginning I could have go However this changing start did also give me inspiration and k

I think what would be nice would be to have more communica cess so we can give and receive good feedback on our progre in our own little worlds for a while.
