Collect data and information on any chosen subject. You will use your classmates/peers to collect the variables of a specified subject. (How many books they have read in the last year? for example). The subject can be anything that can be measured statistically. You will then visually represent your research into three visual solutions. The first (a poster) that is purely a typographic solution, the second (a poster) that is an Imaged based solution and the third (a poster) where you do not use the computer in any shape or form
We live in a world of information. More and more we depend on the visual tranalation of data into information as an important part of our everyday life. The term “data” in itself does not constitute communication, but is more accurately defined as raw statistics. Designers play an integral part in visualizing information and making it accessible to the reader/viewer. Providing informative “form” to raw data in a manner that allows accessibility and viewer interest, makes the process of communication have more meaning and understanding. Designers can respond to the display of statistical information by relying on conventionally expected “forms” to display information. By designers can also respond in a manner that invites engagement for the viewer through a form that reflects a “relatedness” to the “content” of the information, as well as new innovative way to visualize this content.
The basic goals of this project is to create three entirely different infographics that state similar information with three completely alternative methods. The goal is to expand our knowledge about representing and organizing data. Another goal of the project is to create posters that are outside of our comfortable designing skills. The three methods, Image, Non - Computer, and Typographic, are all separate ways of displaying data and can be used in various ways, which ever displays the data most effectively. Infographics have slowly but surely become more and more graphic. Companies are now designing infographics to be appealing as opposed to strictly statistical. Companies, magazines, and journals have succeeded with these new infographics, and Tad encouraged us to learn how to organize information because infographics are becoming more and more important, especially as society continues to quicken it’s daily pace. Many people overlook the candy that we have hiding inside our refrigerators. American citizens forget that sweets do not always come in plastic wrappers, nor do they always go straight to your hips. Fruit, creations natural sweet, is innately nutritious, sometimes free, and insanely delicious. My survey and infographics represent what college students know about sweets, but I also created it to make students more aware of the tastey sweets that have easy access to, and hopefully inspire them to eat more fruit and less artificial junk!
Each poster should be 13x 19 either landscape or portrait. Outside of that the parameters are open. What is the best way to visually represent your collected data as a printed poster? How can type be used as image? How can image speak more directly to your viewer? Continue to examine alternative ways to communicate. Image Based Solution: mostly imagery, graphics, shapes, color, some text Typographic based Solution: mostly text, rules, dots, lines, color, some basic shapes No Computer based Solution: wide open here. Hand drawn, cut and paste, sculpt, be very creative. This is meant to push your creativity.

YEAH, WE ALL MAKE AWFUL STUFF. WE’RE ALWAYS MAKING CRAPPY WORK AND THEN FALLING ON OUR FACES. THEN WE GET UP AND MAKE IT BETTER. EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE, WE MAKE SOMETHING THAT’S GREAT, AND IT INSPIRES US TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN.

The good, the bad, and the ugly about how graphic design students feel about fruit. This survey covers a multitude of controversies directly related to specific fruits and answers some important questions that students are curious about. I wanted to find out how much students ate fruit, what they ate, and if different textures or fruit statistics surprised them. Throughout the process of the survey, I found that many graphic design students are very picky and many of them don’t eat enough fruit.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a professional organizer- I loved organizing my Mom’s bills and folders, and all my crayons and markers were organized perfectly in rainbow color order in my plastic box inside my desk at school. As I grew up a little bit, I realized I really loved design and how a page can influence the reader before any text was read. The two random career paths merged, and here I am at the University of Kansas in the Graphic Design program. Who would have thought I would be assigned to organize and design all in one project? Tad Carpenter created a project in which we would organize data into an infographic. Currently infographics are all the rage in a range magazines, newspapers, websites, and even for keeping personal records. Tad wanted us to have the ability to organize data using three entirely separate strategies: Typographic, Image-based, and ‘Hands-On’ methods. We were told to stretch ourselves past our limited skills and move on to design in more creative ways. Throughout the project my skills were tested in extreme ways, though I have learned that I am able to communicate data through many different means. I pushed myself outside far outside the walls of my comfort zone, hardly slept, and made great memories. Thanks for viewing!
