Artistic Challenge at Isle of MTV Thanks to Vodafone Malta Article By: di-ve.com news editorial@di-ve.com For the second consecutive year, Vodafone has been chosen as the telecommunications partner for the Isle of MTV held at the Granaries. Numerous people, particularly youngsters tried their luck at Vodafone competitions organised specifically for the Malta Music Week Events. Many participants were declared winners, including the sought after ‘meet and greet’ initiative which meant that two lucky winners, Aidan Vella and Eilieen Spiteri could personally meet artist Jessie J. An initiative that caught people’s attention was the artistic challenge launched by Vodafone on the night. “To celebrate this special and joyous event, we decided to install a backdrop including inspirational messages from popular songs by Rita Ora and Jessie J, “Stop for a minute and Smile” and “Shine your light”,” said Maria Vella Galea, Brand Manager at Vodafone Malta. “All those present had

the opportunity to take part in Vodafone’s artistic challenge and draw and fill in the words of the backdrop, whilst entering a competition with a chance of winning 1 of 6 Samsung Galaxy Y. It was great fun to see people putting in their own personal touch on our installation, giving their input in a fun and creative way and colouring away as the night drew to an end.” During the event, Vodafone promoted their latest Summer offers including the Talk Non Stop Plan at 10c per call to all local Vodafone numbers and a discount of €50 off the Samsung Galaxy Y to all local Vodafone customers. The Isle of MTV included international superstars Jessie J, Rita Ora, Rudimental and Afrojack giving 50,000 music fans a night to remember. For the seventh consecutive year, the spectacular locality of Floriana played host to one of the biggest nights in the international music calendar. The show will air across all MTV channels around the world in a 60 minute Isle of MTV Malta programme from 3rd August and it will also be part of the World Stage Franchise. The Vodafone Malta Foundation assists children’s development Gemma Mifsud Bonnici and Roberta Pace from the Vodafone Malta Foundation recently visited St. Margaret College Kalkara Primary School for a demonstration by the acclaimed Helen O’Grady Academy. This was an opportunity for the Foundation representatives to experience first-hand the valuable opportunities for growth, children are being offered through classes which are specifically designed to tap into their creativity while building on their social skills. Through the Helen O’Grady Academy programme, the Vodafone Malta Foundation has for the last couple of years provided children at St. Margaret College Kalkara Primary School with a developmental programme intended to boost their confidence, encourage attentive listening and improve students’ knowledge of English. Weekly classes cover speech, movement, creative expression, language development and a short improvised play designed to encourage students to “work the language”. The programme boosts children’s confidence and helps build strong and assertive personalities. “There is no better way for children to learn lessons for life through a progressive and rich syllabus that also doubles up as fun and leaves young students with a lasting sense of achievement,” said Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson of the Foundation. “Providing opportunities for children is at the core of the Foundation’s work and experiencing the children’s successes gives us great satisfaction and joy.” Head of the School’s Progress Report Miriam Mallia spoke about the fun element that is present at the Helen O’Grady programme which proves a huge success with children. “For the sessions to be successful, we use authentic English during the sessions and children have to listen and speak in English. The children have gained confidence when using English as a second language. Again we have

also noticed an increase in students’ comprehension of the English language and a dismantling of the diffidence shown in spoken English,” she remarked. Alan Montanaro, principal for the Malta branch of the Helen O’Grady Academy thanked The Vodafone Malta Foundation for giving these children this valuable opportunity. “The benefits of drama in education are enormous and should go a long way in enhancing the rest of the school curriculum,” he explained. “Since communication and empathy are central to drama, a student will be better able to understand and discuss problems. The link between drama and subjects such as English, History, Social Studies, and related areas is obvious. The study of literature would be impossible without drama.” Over 70,000 students attend Helen O’Grady classes weekly throughout 23 countries including Malta.

Oar-some achievement

Daniel, Ruben and Neville (back to camera) during the final stretch. Photo: Alan Carville Three men braved the currents along the 600km stretch of sea between Sardinia and Malta, sleeping a mere four hours every day for seven days, in aid of children. Gym enthusiasts Daniel Abela, 44, Neville Calleja, 41, and Reuben Vassallo, 28, had been preparing for the challenge since February. They had initially calculated it would take them some 10 days to row all the way from Sardinia, but cutting down on their breaks and sleep, they managed to cover the stretch in seven days. Asked if they were ever close to giving up, Mr Abela said decisively: “No, you simply can’t. “You need to pick up your spirits and remember what you’re doing it for. We did it for children who don’t have the option to give up. “Following this challenge, we could go back to our normal lives, but these children do not have the option to walk away from their situation. Thinking of them gave us special energy.” The rowers also remembered their coach Iman Galea’s words that they had been trained not to give in, he added. With the support of Vodafone Malta Foundation, the three men are hoping to break the record sum of €90,000 raised when Mr Abela rowed between Sicily and Malta in aid of the Puttinu Children’s Cancer Support Group and Beyond the Moon programme.

The biggest challenge the rowers faced was the wind and the currents. Mr Abela said that although the conditions were not bad, there were times when they had to struggle not to be set back by the forces. On Wednesday there was a point when they covered only two nautical miles in three and a half hours, when in normal conditions they would have covered more than 10.

We did it for children who don’t have the option to give up They left Sardinia on July 13 at 2.30pm and arrived in Malta on Sunday at the same time. They rowed up to 18 hours and slept a maximum of four hours daily. Approaching Malta was another difficult feat, as no matter how much they rowed, it felt as if they were not gaining ground. Battling the currents and the wind, their arrival was delayed by a few hours. During the whole venture they were accompanied by Kurt Camilleri and Dario Schembri on the support boat, who were joined later by Claudio Bugeja. The funds raised for Puttinu will help pay for dream holidays for sick children and their families, while Inspire will be using the money to set up Malta’s first educational centre to help children with learning disabilities such as autism and dyslexia. Cheque donations can be sent to: The Children in Need Foundation, 217/1, 21st September Avenue, Naxxar. Suspended sentence after robbing a tablet and mobile phones

Saturday, 20 July 2013, 08:29

A 37-year old man from Mosta was jailed for 18 months, but had his term suspended for four years after admitting to stealing a “tablet” and a number of mobiles from various outlets. The court heard that Nicholas Agius has a drug problem. Agius pleaded guilty to stealing the tablet last Wednesday from the shop “E World Limited” of Pietà. He also admitted that two days before, he stole a mobile from the “GO Retail Outlet” in Naxxar and another mobile from the Melita plc shop in the same locality. Agius also pleaded guilty that on Tuesday he stole another mobile from the shop “Inside Vodaphone” in Sliema and two other mobiles from Melita plc, again in Naxxar. He also pleaded guilty to attempted robbery from the Vodafone establishment in St Julian’s. Defence counsel Dorianne Vella told Magistrate Doreen Clarke that Agius has a drug problem, as he fell back into the habit after six years of being clean, but unfortunately he is now on heroin. Apart from the suspended sentence he was also put on probation for four years. Inspector Josric Mifsud and Inspector Michael Alan Mallia prosecuted.

Children go ‘green’

Wednesday, 17 July 2013, 16:03

Bank of Valletta recently extended its ‘green’ culture to the children of BOV employees during a fun-packed day organised at the President’s Kitchen Garden in San Anton. Throughout the day, a group of 50 children, aged 7 to 12, participated in educational games and activities focused on environmental issues related to waste reduction, energy saving and carbon footprint. The children experienced first-hand how they too have a role to play in taking care of the environment. Stephanie Agius, CSR co-ordinator at Bank of Valletta explained her satisfaction at the outcome of the event and said: “The environment has become an important aspect for the bank and through such an initiative, we are extending our green values not only to our people but also to their families.” Bank of Valletta keeps the environment high on its agenda, ensuring that its environmental responsibility features prominently across the organisation, both at strategic and operational levels.

Bank of Valletta Reduces Carbon Footprint Article By: di-ve.com news

Bank of Valletta has taken yet another step towards reducing its carbon footprint through the replacement of the lighting on the façade of its Head Office in Santa Venera with low consumption light fittings. It is estimated that the replacement of metal-halide lamps with LED light fittings will reduce electricity consumption by over 24,000 kilowatt hours per year, translating into a reduction of over 26,000kg of harmful Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere. This initiative forms part of a long-term project that Bank of Valletta has embarked upon in its bid to minimise its carbon footprint. The initial phase of the project involved a full lighting audit of its offices and branches, as well as the usage of lower consumption fittings. The second phase saw the installation of over 300 photo-voltaic panels generating 135,000 units per annum reducing a further 118,000kg of CO2. Given that the average tree absorbs 7 kg of carbon dioxide every year, it would take over 20,000 trees to absorb this amount of CO2. “The greatest challenge in implementing clean energy solutions is dealing with old infrastructure in existing buildings, which need to be upgraded and converted to cleaner more efficient systems using alternative power sources,” said Mark Marmara, Environmental Responsibility Manager at Bank of Valletta. “We are also looking into our operations with efforts being made to introduce initiatives aimed at reducing the use of paper and generate less waste,” continued Mr Marmara.
