Beyond the Moon Foundation awards Silver Award Article By: di-ve.com news editorial@di-ve.com The Vodafone Malta Foundation and entrepreneur Daniel Abela have just been awarded a Silver Award by the Beyond the Moon Foundation, an award that recognises significant support by third parties to families of serious ill children. Beyond the Moon Co-Founder and Manager Pascale Somers presented this Award to Daniel Abela and the Vodafone Malta Foundation who supported more than 20 families in realizing a dream vacation with their children and provided them with invaluable and indelible moments of hope, strength and joy. “Children always touch our hearts in special ways,” said Administrator for the Vodafone Malta Foundation, Roberta Pace. “And they do this even more when they are vulnerable, sick and in need of love and care. This is not only felt by our Foundation but also by the Maltese community at large, evidenced by the extraordinary support the Maltese give throughout the year. We are very honoured that we received this award, making us proud to help out a support group that provides hope to these children and their families.” In June 2008 Daniel Abela took on the challenge of rowing single-handedly from Sicily to Malta, in aid of the Puttinu Children’s Cancer Support Group and Beyond the Moon programme. The challenge, supported by the Vodafone Malta Foundation, other commercial entities and the general public, raised funds for a dream holiday at Disneyland Resort Paris for families with children suffering from cancer or other illnesses. “I never imagined that what started off as a challenging stunt could evolve into a charity event that would deliver so much happiness and joy to so many families and children,” said Daniel Abela, “for this I am deeply grateful to the Vodafone Malta Foundation, other numerous business associates and the

public that gave generously and encouraged me when I was preparing for this crossing. The brave children I met gave me a lesson for life– despite all, they look at life with great courage and positivity and they are a great inspiration to all of us. The kind words from their families have made my challenge more of a success and I cherish their holiday postcards jealously.” Beyond the Moon offers families with seriously ill children the opportunity to enjoy a memorable, costfree vacation in a child-friendly environment and also to spend carefree quality time together, far away from hospitals and treatments. Each category corresponds to the number of families with a seriously ill child, who enjoyed an unforgettable holiday, thanks to the financial contributions of the sponsor. In 2010, Daniel Abela and the Vodafone Malta Foundation received the Bronze Award for 10 families that had been offered quality time together during a family vacation, far away from hospitals. “I am delighted that I am giving the Beyond the Moon Silver Award to Daniel Abela and Vodafone Malta Foundation’s 20th family,” said Pascale Somers. “On behalf of Beyond the Moon, I'm also very grateful for the successful long-lasting partnership that we have built with them. It is very encouraging for the Beyond the Moon team to receive positive reactions following tangible feedback by means of family testimonials that we commit ourselves to provide to our sponsors. Furthermore, our charity has a special way of recognizing its loyal sponsors, which consists of various categories of awards.” The Vodafone Malta Foundation and Daniel Abela made it possible for these Maltese families to enjoy each other's company, laugh together and strengthen their family ties. It is throught the great support of everyone involved, including Sandra Chetcuti, Beyond the Moon Ambassador for Malta and Dr Victor Calvagna and his medical team at Mater Dei Hospital, for having nominated these families that such a fantastic result was achieved and that so many Maltese families were made happy. “Relexation, fun, enjoyment and laughter ... Many beautiful moments,” said one of the parents that enjoyed the trip. “It is wonderful to realise that there are people who are willing to sponsor such trips. Our children really benefit from it and to know that people are willing to chip in to see them happy is what makes us really appreciate life and what Beyond the Moon really does. We would also like to thank everyone involved in making this fun holiday a reality.”

HTC One – Review (Updated)

Another phone that was highly anticipated this year is the HTC One. With this release, HTC is bringing its A-game in a big way. This year HTC, in a very gutsy move decided to focus on only one main phone release, and their bet seems to be working as the new HTC One is dubbed to be the hottest phone of 2013! The first time you see the One, there’s an immediate feeling of amazement at the beauty of the device, and after you hold it, that astonishment is confirmed even further. From a hardware design perspective, this phone is unparalleled. It’s machined from a solid block of aluminum, each piece taking 200 minutes to carve out. It’s really light (5.04 ounces) and thin (0.36 inches) but it feels rock solid. The curved back sinks into your palm, while the slightly angled edges help you grip it. On the front side of the device you find the Super LCD 3 screen under Gorilla Glass 2. The screen reaches up to 1080p (1920×1080 pixels) over 4.7-inches, which gives it a 468 pixels per inch (PPI) which makes the pixels invisible to the naked eye. As you can imagine the screen is absolutely glorious and the vividness and brightness is also a sight to behold. The bezels on the sides of the screen are very thin. Above and below the screen are speaker grates to give you real stereo sound. At the bottom of the screen one can find two capacitative touch buttons—Home and Back—though I would have certainly preferred none. The micro USB port on the bottom doubles as an HDMI port (special cable required) for connecting your phone directly to a TV, though you’ll also be able to do this wirelessly via Miracast. Speaking of TV, the power button on top the device doubles as a IR blaster for using your phone as a remote control. There are a lot of goodies under the hood, too. OS: Android 4.1 with Sense CPU: 1.7 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600

Screen: 4.7-inch 1920×1080 Super LCD 3 (468PPI) RAM: 2GB Storage: 32GB or 64GB Camera: 4MP rear (“UltraPixel”)/ 2.1MP front Battery: 2300 mAh Li-Ion At the top/front of the phone sits a wide angle front-facing camera and a special back camera that HTC boldly dropped to a 4MP resolution using a totally new technology called UItrapixels – basically, bigger mega pixels which let in more light. The camera has an f2.0 aperture and optical image stabilization, both of which are impressive for a phone. HTC’s reasoning behind this change kind of makes sense as most people nowadays use photos mostly on Facebook and social media networks like Instagram etc… so an 8/13MP camera is certainly not used to its maximum potential. HTC’s camera app is really nice and gives you a lot of granular control over the images you take, and the shutter is instantaneous. Viewing the things you shoot is much more enjoyable on the One, as the Gallery app has been revamped. On the video side, not only can it shoot HDR (high-dynamic range) 1080p video, but it records HDR audio. HTC claims that by using two mics tuned to different ranges (one higher, one lower), the One can cancel out distortion. Indeed, recorded audio sounded terrific for a phone camera. I wasn’t personally too pleased with the video recording capabilities in HDR mode in particular, and I would steer off from using it. Something that could eventually be fixed via a software update. At launch the One is running Android 4.1 (yes really!) awith HTC Sense 5.0 and we will have to wait a couple of months more for a new version. Sense 5.0 is a pretty major redesign from its predecessor, and it has a lot of new features. The most prominent of those, BlinkFeed, aggregates stories from your favorite news sources and social media into a more visually appealing array of tiles, much like you’d find on Windows Phone. There are other changes in Sense 5.0, too, like a more customizable lock screen, an overhaul of the classic HTC clock/weather widget, and a new layout in the app drawer. Visually speaking, it’s cleaner, more minimalist, and more attractive than the old Sense. The first time the phone makes a noise, it’s startling. HTC has claimed that its BoomSound (i.e. the dual frontal stereo speakers with built-in amps) gives you “bigger sound with less distortion and more detail.” When I was reading the press release, I was sure this was just marketing fluff, however after trying it first-hand I can safely say it’s hands-down the bestsounding phone I’ve ever heard. You can turn the volume way up and it still sounds excellent. It’s great for gaming, too. Having a high pixel count generally slows phones down, so my speed expectations were low. I was glad however to be proven so wrong! The device manages to power up from off to fully booted and ready to go in 8 seconds! Apps open faster than I’ve seen on any other phone and everything happens instantaneously.

Should you buy this phone? YES! It’s simply one of the most exciting pieces of hardware I’ve seen in a long time, including the Galaxy S IV. As of this moment, the HTC One is looking like the best Android phone you’ll be able to buy for the foreseeable future. UPDATE: Initially I thought the dropping of camera resolution was just a marketing bluff, but after using the device for about a month now, I do agree with HTC that the drop from my previous 8MP phone camera to the 4MP didn’t make any difference at all. The quality of the photos more than make up for the drop in resolution. A big thanks goes to Vodafone Malta for providing us with the review phone.

Vodafone’s Exco team helps out at San Blas

Members from Vodafone’s Exco team with San Blas residents creating a classic racing car from large sheets of cardboard, wooden wheels and metal shafts. Exco, Vodafone Malta’s top management team, recently rolled up their sleeves and lent a helping hand at San Blas Therapeutic Centre, joining forces with residents in a Corporate Social Responsibility day. “New Hope, our project to help and rehabilitate illicit drug users and their families, offers a range of services that support the daily and long-term functioning of residential and semi-residential rehabilitation programmes,” said San Blas administrator and HR head Lino Cremona. “We are grateful for the help we get from various organisations. Without their contribution, it would be very hard for us to continue with our mission to help residents build up values that enable them to return back into society as responsible individuals.” The Exco team explained how this was an eye-opening experience, thanking staff at San Blas for their warm welcome. Talking to residents, they realised how hard it can be for someone to get back on track after making use of illicit substances. The Vodafone Malta Foundation has helped Caritas with several contributions over the years, including the Electrical Upgrade project. San Blas offers drug abusers the opportunity to receive further rehabilitation treatment on a 24-hour intensive residential basis within a safe and secure community setting. The community hosts up to 28 men, and the programme spans an average of nine months, with the last month being on a semi-residential basis. Once the residential phase is successfully completed, residents are evaluated and moved to the reentry phase. After this phase, a service is offered to clients which helps them reintegrate into society. Even after completing the programme, clients are encouraged to stay in contact with Caritas through its aftercare services.

Vodafone uses mobile base stations to improve coverage

Vodafone Malta has just launched COW, a base station on wheels. Vodafone Malta has just launched the innovative Cells on Wheels (COW) system, a base station on wheels, which will be used for the very first time during Isle of MTV on Wednesday. At public events, demand for mobile traffic is high and coverage and capacity may suffer if not adequately catered for. “Just like roads during peak-hour, congestion occurs and the same happens on mobile networks,” said Francis Fenech and Sandro Debono, who both worked on this project. “With customers constantly wanting to update their Facebook wall and posting photos on Instagram, we thought Isle of MTV would be the best place to launch and install our new Cells on Wheels technology to improve phone coverage and performance for all our customers.” Vodafone started working on this project in February and both Mr Fenech, an RBS field technician, and Mr Debono, an installer, worked within Vodafone’s Technology Department to come up with COW. “High-capacity and high-profile events are a key opportunity to showcase our network but coping with huge numbers of customers who constantly use their smartphones is very challenging for our technology,” said Vodafone Malta CEO Balesh Sharma. “We have therefore created another first in Malta, differentiating ourselves from our competition in the form of our Cells on Wheels, providing GSM and 3G services that give us the possibility to be fully up and running at events in around two days.”

Vodafone Malta Foundation supports fundraising fun walk

Siġġiewi pupils during the walk. The Vodafone Malta Foundation recently supported a fun walk in aid of Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, by providing eco-friendly bags to the participants and giving a €3,600 donation to the NGO. The donation was part of a sum collected through Vodafone’s Employee Contribution Charity Scheme 2012. Dar talProvidenza was one of three NGOs that received funds raised by employees towards charities of their choice. The walk, organised by the Ekoskola committee from St Ignatius College, Siġġiewi primary school, saw children and their families and friends walk six kilometres from the school to Dar tal-Providenza. Mass was celebrated after the walk and a donation of €1,006 was made by the children. John Spiteri, a Vodafone employee, who also took part in the walk, said: “Dar tal-Providenza, which has grown beyond recognition, is the leading provider of residential care for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. To continue functioning, it needs a lot of financial support and help. “Through Vodafone Malta Foundation’s contribution, we can ensure vulnerable people in our society are given the care they deserve.” Doreen Spiteri from Ekoskola said the children had prepared for the fun walk by preparing posters, online adverts and promotion through the media. Ekoskola is a project focused on developing children into responsible citizens who can take care of their natural and social environment. Last year the school’s Ekoskola committee carried out a lot of work focused on the natural environment. This year it chose to shift its focus to voluntary work. www.ekoskola.org.mt
