NORDIC TRIANGLE
NORDIC URBANISM
While Norway has a history of being a comparatively impoverished country, the discovery of offshore oil deposits within the last half century has allowed the nation to catch up with the success of its Scandinavian neighbors. Oslo was recently recognized as the fastest growing city in Europe - its cost of living has outpaced that of Stockholm and Copenhagen. After a legacy of several hundred years of imperial rule under the empires of Denmark and Sweden, Oslo is attempting to reestablish itself among its neighboring capitals as a legitimate cultural and architectural center. With a relatively small population, Oslo often feels more like a large village than the capital city of Norway. But in the past ten years the city has initiated several ambitious programs, diverting large sums of money into constructing massive cultural buildings, urban renewal and infrastructural redevelopment. The controversial Fjord City project intends to consolidate nearly all of the city’s museums and arts institutions into new buildings along the city waterfront.

CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS
The map of Oslo shows the museums and libraries whose collections are being consolidated in 3 massive new cultural buildings currently undergoing construction on the Fjord: The National Museum, The Munch Stenersen Museum, and The Deichman Main Library. Additionally, the map shows the movement of historic buildings that were removed from the city center to be preserved in the open air Folk Museum on Oslo's "Museum Island". Although taken from different sites across the old city, these structures were rearranged within the museum grounds to create a fictitious urban space along with many traditional stave and log built structures that were transported from rural areas across Norway. Like the collection of traditional Norwegian architecture established at Bygdøy in 1881 by King Oscar II's as the first Open Air Museum in the world, this project imagines an alternative reality in which the buildings themselves, along with the collections they contained, were physically moved to the sites of the new library and museums. The resulting architectural collage explores the expansion of the programmatic possibilities previously hosted by the independent spaces.
