THE EVOC STORY 50 DESTINATIONS IN 20 YEARS Over the last 20 years we have travelled to more than 50 destinations. FALL/ WINTER 2021/2022 // A NEW SEASON// EXPLORE TO RIDE The quest for unique and unforgettable powder lines is not just part of our history, but also an integral element of EVOC’s DNA. Of course we test the latest product ranges on these trips, however, it’s much more about discovering potentials early on and also figuring out how to improve the tried-and-tested. When we travel, we also collect impressions and ideas which we later express in the product designs and colours of new collections. We were fortunate enough to be able to travel to Kamchatka - just before the novel coronavirus brought the world to a standstill. This Russian peninsula with its giant snow covered volcanos was the destination of our very first winter expedition twenty years ago. At the time, even getting there was a huge undertaking and we had to conquer peaks left to our own devices. Today it is much less complicated to reach and the volcanos have been made so much more accessible that you can fully concentrate on the descents. This means that the required equipment has also changed considerably: bulky expedition gear has been replaced by more easily manageable luggage options. Sports equipment and paraphernalia has also become much more sophisticated and specific which has altered the demands we had of our products, too. For FALL/WINTER 2021/2022 we have completely revisited our colour and design concept and transferred this to our entire range. The TRAVEL line received a makeover and a few very

worthwhile new additions that make traveling with sports gear even more comfortable. The new GEAR BAGS and BACKPACKS are designed as versatile, practical transport helpers for all seasons - no matter if you need them for winter or summer sports. In addition, we have produced a new MULTICOLOUR edition that makes a real design statement. Even if, as the idiom goes, the journey is the reward, there comes the magic moment when you stand at the drop-in of the powder line that you have yearned and worked for so long. Now it’s not merely about finally finding out what the first run has in store for you, it’s also a point when you’re genuinely grateful for everything that offers some sense of safety. That’s exactly why we have developed an brand new range of protector backpacks, the LINE PRO: our new benchmark when it comes to winter sports backpacks with integrated protection. We honestly hope that our new range not only offers inspiration for the best possible time in meters of powder next season, but also some useful products which make traveling more enjoyable and convenient and - most importantly - make your descents safer. B I G M O U N TA I N – TA M TA M Kamchatka is a Russian peninsula specked with snow covered giant volcanos. It is situated in the easternmost corner of Siberia, on the rim of the Bering Sea and is part of the “Ring of Fire“ - the belt of volcanos and seismically active sites outlining the entire Pacific Ocean. Twenty years ago, this wild land of bears and exceptionally harsh nature was the destination of our very first winter expedition. In the mid nineties, we set our minds to becoming the first people to ride down these volcanos on snowboards, but unfortunately it eventually took us until 2000 to get all the required visa to be able to actually travel there.

KAMTSCHATKA TRIP HISTORY

What was in store for us when we arrived was probably the most extreme snowboard trip we had ever been on and the one that really took us to our limits. Once we reached our destination after a days-long, adventurous and tedious journey, we were confronted with a situation that we simply couldn’t have imagined. This winter trip was rapidly developing into a serious expedition with everything that goes with it: a base camp with tents in the snow, laborious gear transport in wonky lorries and on ancient snow mobiles. Then followed hours-long snow shoe marches on seemingly endless volcano ridges with subsequent technical and steep sections requiring the use of ice axes and crampons. And all this in extreme weather conditions with storms and severely cold temperatures. Frankly, it had already been an impossible task from the outset to attempt climbing the peaks of these volcanos at this time of year. To make matters worse, our equipment was just not capable to persist in these adverse conditions. Never before in our lives had we experienced cold like this! Handling our gear in the snow and storm also didn’t work as planned, the backpacks were inadequate and the attachments for the boards and ice axes weren’t able to sustain their load reliably - some snapped, others weren’t firm enough. We were in a constant struggle with our equipment and in light of the harsh temperatures this increasingly became a safety issue.

Our original goal was to climb both the Avachinsky (2751m) and Koryaksky (3456m) volcanos and ride them. With our utmost efforts, we only just managed to reach the top of Avachinsky and were rewarded with an awe-inspiring descent. At Koryaksky we were forced to relinquish 300 meters below the peak and ride back down defeated. The storm and cold left us no choice, but led us to a critical conclusion: on trips and expeditions to remote places around the globe, it is vital to be able to rely well and truly on your equipment. With the experiences of this thrilling trip, as well as frostbite on my hands and feet, I returned home and attempted to answer the following two questions: Firstly, how would the equipment - specifically the backpacks - have to be optimized to make it more suited for freeriding on trips like this? And secondly, how do I get back to Kamchatka and manage to take on the indescribable descents on these huge mountains more effectively?

At the time it wasn’t even conceivable that some day, with EVOC, I would have my own bag and backpack company. Now, 20 years later, I’m finally back. The sight of these breathtaking and majestic volcanos never really left me. And it remains as ineffable as ever… But contrary to the first time, the journey there is much less preposterous and thanks to EVOC we now also have the right equipment. The landscape and the extreme weather conditions are unchanged and transport still

takes place in lorries, but these can now automatically adapt their tyre pressure to the snow conditions and the luggage is mounted securely on the roof in sturdy transport bags. Instead of tents, we now sleep in lodges and we have helicopter support to get up the volcanos. Consequently we can thoroughly concentrate on riding the endless couloirs that reach from the peaks right down to the sea. It’s an incredible experience, after a thousand meters of decent, to take your last couple of turns when

you’re virtually on the beach. However, now, topics like safety and risk management have gained a new level of significance, because we are way more downhill oriented than 20 years ago. What are the snow conditions and can we assess and manage the avalanche risk during our descent? Which chute should be ridden where? In this regard, our equipment has also changed substantially and features a lot of new safety components: our backpacks are now equipped with avalanche airbags and integrated back protectors, they are very lightweight as well as ergonomic and can be easily wielded with gloves in any situation. Boards and skis are also quick and simple to attach and always remain firmly in place. This is vital in the hiking and

climbing sections when getting to the entry of your runs. This time we are also luckier: the conditions are excellent and we are able to ride lines that we could only dream of 20 years ago. Even though it is cold, there is fresh snow and practically no wind. We take full advantage of this situation! This time we ride all the lines we could only marvel at from a distance when we were here before. Steep chutes, vast open faces, slopes cut off by cliffs and cornices for amazing cliff drops. It simply couldn’t get any better than this! On the last day, we are standing on the peak of the 2173m Vilyuchinsky volcano when I come full circle: we gaze upon the vast expanses of the Pacific Ocean, the evening sun

LITESHIELD PLUS BACK PROTECTOR Even though this new back protector is extremely light, flexible and non-temperature-sensitive, it offers superior impact resistance and energy absorption. The 2-component sandwich construction 01 consists of a combination of expanded polypropylene and a TPU carrier layer. The expanded polypropylene pellets are brought into shape under high pressure and steam and simultaneously bonded with the carrier layer - without the use of adhesives or other solvents. The highly-compressed EPP foam 02 protects the chest, lumbar spine and coccyx perfectly. The side facing your back is comprised of smaller crossshaped portions 03 (SEGMENTED PLUS DESIGN). This construction creates numerous ventilation channels that provide improved air circulation. Simultaneously, these segments offer a vast range of motion in all directions: the cross-shaped protector elements can move independently. We carefully select exclusive materials for our products or tailor them exactly to our requirements. For use in our products, materials must be lightweight as well as exhibit optimum material properties. Our high standards in terms of product functionality and quality are the most important indicator in this regard.

KODRA OUTER MATERIALS The requirements for perfect backpack and bag outer material can be summarised into four characteristics: durability, abrasion resistance, water resistance and weight. Depending on the purpose of the product, we use various types of nylon with different weaves and thicknesses that optimally support the function of the product.

TASLAN Our high-end fabric, that sports an excellent low weight/stability ratio. Thanks to its special weave using thick and thin yarn, it is particularly tear-resistant and retains its shape, while the PU coating makes it completely waterproof.

Extremely abrasion resistant yet super lightweight: the new Kodra material made from a high-quality nylon-polyester mix with PU coating on the inside endures even the harshest abuse. However, its surface has a soft feel and a slick matte look.

N 210D RIPSTOP HD

N 420D HD

Extremely lightweight and yet abrasion-resistant, this fabric with ripstop construction and highdensity fabric boasts and tear resistance. The crosshatch weave pattern ensures that potential tears do not easily spread. The coating makes the nylon water-repellent.

This nylon is ideal for use wherever a high degree of durability and abrasion resistance is required, and it is super lightweight, too. The robust and highquality fabric is finished with a coating on the inside for water resistance.

N 210 TAFFETTA We use this light, durable and completely waterproof fabric for our rain covers, in particular.

TARPAULIN 1000D (EVOC TARPAULIN) Extremely temperature-resistant and completely waterproof – these are the properties of this high-quality PVCfree EVOC tarpaulin. Perfect for all heavy-duty EVOC products.

P 600D Where usage involves high wear and tear, e.g. in the case of the bike travel bag or bag bases, we use this tear-resistant, lightweight and waterresistant polyester fabric. Most recently, it is finished with a TEFLON COATING so even dirt simply rolls off the fabric.

CORDURA 1000D This high-strength cordura fabric is practically indestructible. Durability and protection are at the forefront with this material, but it also scores high points for low weight. Waterrepellent thanks to the coating.

Neoprene exhibits flexibility and stability at the same time, and therefore offers exceptionally good grip – over a wide temperature range, and in wet and dry conditions. This makes the material our number one choice for our hip belts, which are possibly the most important backpack components for distributing load towards the body’s centre of gravity for maximum comfort.

With its origin in medical device technology, this extremely sturdy premium material has everything to justify its use in our top-quality hip belts: exceptionally flexible, completely air-permeable, and yet sufficiently sturdy to keep the backpack in place with the load as close as possible to the body’s centre of gravity.

POLYGIENE ® ODOR CRUNCH Equipment that prevents odour. This feat is made possible by modified silica particles that absorb molecules containing sulphur or nitrogen, break them down into smaller odourless molecules and hereby remove the unpleasant smells.

LININGS By linings we mean our lining and inner materials that are used on our bags and backpacks. We vary these, too, according to the intended use for the bag or backpack, and ensure they are colourcoordinated so that the design experience can continue to be appreciated once they are opened up.

POLYESTER 210 TAFETTA Our TRAVEL Line linings are soft and silky to touch and hold their shape well thanks to the fine web structure of the fabric. Ideal protection for clothing and personal equipment. The extra coating ensures it is robust enough for sporting journeys, too.
