Shawnee Mission North High School Overland Park, KS Becky Tate, adviser Judges’ comments Attention to detail separates the great from the average. On this spread, our judges took note of thoughtful touches like the text wrap around the arm of the drummer and the finely crafted cut-out backgrounds on the drums above his left shoulder. They also noted the eye-flow created by the drum sticks pointing toward both the headline and photo strip running down the right-hand side of the spread.

1ST| PLACE Lesley Ann Bellinger Bryant High School Bryant, AR Margaret Sorrows, adviser

Judges’ comments A beautiful use of white space, including three levels of spacing, set this spread apart from its competitors. The photo modules have tight spacing, which creates a visual group. Quotes and stories are surrounded by wider, but still consistent expanded spacing, which gives the elements on this spread some room to breathe. The judges also applauded the varying types of coverage, including photo modules, quotes, two quick reads, a caption for every photo and a feature story.
SECOND PLACE
2ND| PLACE Bleakney Bisset Westlake High School Austin, TX Cindy Todd, adviser
Judges’ comments The judges summed up this magazine-inspired spread in two words, “clever details.” They loved that the subject’s name is on an angle that echoes the chair rail and also leads to the feature story. They noted that the color for the headline was pulled from the subject’s lanyard, which draws attention to his face. The text treatment on the headline is fun and the simple graphics surrounding the feature story contain it without trapping it.

Judges’ comments As a divider, this spread succeeds on several levels. It includes multiple people and the graphics work with the large photo to create a sense of movement, including layers of photos and graphics and text that work together to tell a story. The judges also took note of the caption in the lower-left corner which is easy to read because of the thoughtful combination of bold, italics and all-caps.

Judges’ comments “Fun, clever and well-executed,” said the judges. A trendy retro look at one of today’s hottest technologies, this is a divider page that visually and verbally communicates to the viewer. The black and white photo works in sync with the text, which is written as if for a 1950s audience, noting that the device is not only “a standard telephone that can call anyone in the phonebook,” but is also “a telegraph that can send messages through the air.”

Judges’ comments This modular layout follows all the rules of design while providing lots of coverage. The judges noted that the photos add to the variety on the spread because there are both single and group shots. This spread keeps the eye moving, but the distinct modules, and consistent spacing within them, help organize information into digestible chunks.

Judges’ comments Decorative fonts can be difficult to use, but this spread does it perfectly with the tag-inspired font used on the word “BOARD.” Wisely, the maroon color used on the headline was repeated several times on the spread. The judges took special note of details like the graphic element running across the bottom of the spread and how the skateboard overlaps the photo package on the lower left side of the spread.

Judges’ comments The judges loved the signature-as-headline on this spread. They also commended Wetzler for the lovely use of black and white photography on top of the color graphic. They noted that the color repetition is both minimal and thoughtful and that the right side of the spread, including that beautiful signature headline and drop quote, balances the heavier, busier left side.
