User-Based Design: This project gave me the opportunity to design based on a specific user . I was tasked with designing a residential townhouse garden based on the hobby of the user. The hobby of the user I was assigned was a wood carver. I designed my garden specifically for a polynesian tiki carver. I looked into the process that one would go through in order to design and craft a tiki carving. This helped me focus in on the needs of the user to help design a space specifically for them.

Brownfield Redevelopment Mapping:

Our design team was tasked with challenge of re-purposing a brownfield site in Gering, NE. The site was home to a scrapyard which in turn contaminated the soil, making the site unwanted and unusable for many years. The main obstacle to overcome was finding a safe way to contain the soil on site. In order to first understand the local area of Gering, our team developed several base maps. The maps examined many things such as hydrology and ecology.

Brownfield Redevelopment A Park for the People:

Our design team visited the site several times before conceptual design . We held public meetings in the town hall for any residents to come and share their wants, needs, and concerns. As well as hosting public meetings, we sent out a survey to the Gering residents to receive more feedback. While designing the public space for Gering, my primary focus was to provide an open space for the youth of the community to run, play, and engage in social activities.

Brownfield Redevelopment Design Intent:

On my visits to Gering, I noticed while walking through the neighborhood of the site that many of the residents were robbed of open space and gathering areas. Not only did they not have a space for community engagement, but the children in the neighborhood had no sports fields within close proximity to their homes. Being a fan of all sports, I personally made it my goal to bring athletic fields to the neiborhood so that the children weren’t denied access to participate in sports.

12 Two buildings exist on the current site. One of them was deemed unsafe, so I decided to dispose of it and keep the other . The existing buidling and site edges provided an organizational structure that framed the components of the design.

Planters and benches were implemented between the basketball court and soccer field to provide seating and vision to both sides of the park. The planters and benches also contain the existing sites contaminated soil. By containing and capping off the soil, it provided a way to create landforms and views over the entire park. The benches and planters would be constructed from old metal and wood scrap that was left on the site. By utilizing old scrap, the cost of removal would drop immensely.

The soccer field is surrounded by small hills and several levels of terracing in ea of its’s corners. The terracing system contains contaminated soil, as well as the hills surrounding the field. All of the terrcaing walls would be constructed of corrugated metal from the scrap of the existing site. One of the four different terracing systems is handicap accessible so that anyone can relax and watch games from a better view.
