MHHAA President Neal McCoy of Tupelo said, “We really like the potential of this program and feel like it can make a real difference by providing funds to all types of cultural and heritage endeavors.

We have established a $150,000 grant fund in this year’s budget and we hope to see it fully disbursed.”

All awarded grants carry a Federal match requirement of 1:1 with the applicants’ match coming from either cash or a cash/in-kind combination.

Those interested in learning more about the program will find complete guidelines and applications at www.mississippihills.org. The applications are currently in a “read-only” mode and will be activated on Dec. 15.

Feb. 1, 2016 is the submission deadline; grant awards will be announced on March 15.

OFF gets travel grant The Oxford Film Festival has been awarded a $500 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). Annual Christmas Parade set for Monday

The annual Lions Club Christmas Parade will begin tomorrow night at 6:30, ushering in the season with the theme of a hearty “Merry Christmas, Y’all!”

John Mulkey, president of the Oxford Lions Club, said the one most uncontrollable variable looks promising this year.

“The weather looks fantastic for the parade on Monday,” he said.

Parade-goers can count on a 45- to 50-minute moving exhibition of seasonal spirit.

“We won’t know exactly how many entries will be in the parade until we’re ready to line up, but we’re expecting 12 to 16 floats, five or six bands, some equestrian groups and, of course, the Lions Club float with Santa Claus bringing up the rear.”

Abner’s Chicken Tenders on the corner of South Lamar and University Avenue will offer bleacher seating, “snow,” pictures with Santa and other amenities for its customers that night, with part of the night’s proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Club.

The Lions Club has been organizing the parade for 35 years, inheriting it from the Jaycees. Mulkey said organizing it is a lot of work, but with so many years to perfect the routine, no one part of it is grueling.

“We know in October that it’s time to let the schools know it’s time to reserve that date for their bands,” he said.

While parade day itself requires a lot of organizing and on-the-spot work to get all the entries lined up correctly, “At 6:30 it becomes a lot of fun,” Mulkey added.

“It almost runs itself.”

The Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce helps with parade participant applications, and a host of groups begin work early on the design and construction of their floats.

“We have some groups that you can always count on for a standout float,” Mulkey said, with North Mississippi Regional Center, Crossroads Animal Hospital and Baptist Memorial Health Care among other perennial contenders as crowd favorites and award winners.

What kinds of people would enjoy the annual Oxford Lions Club Christmas Parade? Mulkey said the answer is anyone who likes lights, music, decorations, holiday cheer, community support, horses, beauty queens and/or Santa Claus.

Fieldstone Farms planned as ‘conservation neighborhood’

The designer of Fieldstone Farms says the 240unit planned condominium development north of the Ole Miss Golf Course will save half the trees on the heavily wooded site and leave residents “immersed in nature.”

“It’s little over 100 acres off College Hill Road,” said landscape architect Henry Minor of Dalhoff Thomas design studio.

“It’s entirely wooded at this point, and what (owner) Brian (Hill) envisions for this development is a conservation neighborhood.

“Fifth-eight acres will be left undeveloped,” he said. “Forty-three acres will include roads, buildable areas, townhouses.

The reason the lots are so deep is so the home can be moved however it needs to be moved to respect what’s already there.”

Minor and Hill presented the plans for the condominium project to the Oxford Tree Board on Thursday, receiving perhaps the most enthusiastic responses that board has ever generated. The project is outside city limits, but because Hill hopes to connect to city water and sewer systems – a common desire for developers near Oxford – city officials can require that it follow city regulations.

Minor said the design would actually strive to meet some of the goals of design guidelines that the city is contemplating for implementation after adoption of its updated comprehensive plan, including flexibility in setbacks to allow for placing of houses where they have less environmental and visual impact.

“We’ve tried to avoid steep slopes and interfering with existing drainage ways, and we’ve tried to put the development – this is going to be a very low-impact development – in the ridgeline areas,” Minor said.

“We laid out each building site so that everybody would be looking out onto green space – existing treed areas,” Minor said.

“We’re really trying to preserve as many of these large groupings as trees as we can and to orient the houses to disrupt them the least possible. In this area we’ve got on-street parking, parallel parking, with sidewalks.” Hill added that the individual cottages would be very similar in design to those in the Abbey Lane development on South 17th Street in Oxford.

Minor said, “Some will be farther from the street than others … to preserve and protect the trees and the existing topography.”

The Village is envisioned as two clusters totaling 25 fourplex townhouses, with three bedrooms in each unit.

Each cluster will have parking inside it, but trees and other greenspace will separate most residence views from the parking area.

“We really looked at how to angle these to maximize the views into the green space and into the existing lake,” Minor thought “The said. process was that every lot, every unit must have

great views into an existed wooded area.”

The Preserve is designed as 71 bungalows, each on a 50-by-120-foot building envelope that allows room for patios and other outdoor amenities.

“This is going to be a condominium development, not a subdivision, so everything is basically common space except for what’s under your building pad,” said Hill, who added that the development will come with “very strict” covenants enforced by a homeowners association. A clubhouse with pool will be built in Phase 1, but no pools will be alat individual lowed homes.

Hill said another requirement in the homeowners’ covenant will be that any HOA meeting that deals with tree-related issues will be required to have a member of the Oxford Tree Board present, if possible.

Mulch trails will be another nature-friendly amenity.

“They weave and wind throughout the entire development to get that sense of connectivity – to where everybody can get on a trail and walk to the lake, the gazebo, the fishing pier with grilling area, the clubhouse,” Minor

said. “We’re really trying to get the residents immersed in nature.”

One Tree Board member asked whether the townhouse portion of Fieldstone Farms would be dominated by students.

“There’s no doubt that there will be students or their parents who purchase some of these condos, but there’ll be a large percentage that will be weekenders,” Hill said.

“The condos that I’ve built, I’ve got young professionals, doctors that are just moving into town.

It’ll be a mixture.”

“But it’s all for sale,” emphasized.

Rather than developing The Cottages first and then one of the other portions, Hill said he hopes to build some of that neighborhood and some of the bungalows simultaneously.

“I will probably skip The Village, the middle section, although I’m going to have to build the roads to get to my clubhouse, because I’m going to build my clubhouse right off the get-go,” he said, noting he already has market demand for the bungalows in The Preserves. tom designed, Hill said he will be the only builder involved.

“I’m not going to be selling lots,” he said.

Minor said the condominium approach to ownership also allows Hill’s designs to be adapted to the topography and trees more than a standard subdivision with pre-submitted site plans and floor plans that are primarily concerned with zoning and other ordinances.

“The (existing) code, for everything that it’s good for, sometimes doesn’t allow for flexibility,” he said.

Hill noted that one example of that is that the mulched nature trails will substitute for sidewalks.

“We provided a lot of access points to the nature trail to provide a lot of connection and activity throughout the development through the nature trails through sidewalks,” he said.

Another will be that most streets will not be curbed and guttered, allowing for natural drainage.

“For this to be an acceptable city development, it would have to have curb and gutter, fivefoot bike lanes, five-foot sidewalks,” Minor said. “It gives us much more flexibility doing it as a condominium.”

Tree Board members were clearly impressed.

Co-Chair Hume Bryant said of the emphasis on conserving existing trees and topography, “We hope this would get some good publicity: Here’s a development that really does get it.”

“This is kind of what we hope people will sometimes do. Pretty thoughtful stuff, y’all. I’m pretty impressed,” said CoChairman Cowan Hunter.

“To get people to think a little harder about ‘How can I do this in a more thoughtful way and in a way that gets a better result for me and the people who are going to be looking for places and the community, too?’ is pretty helpful. Remembering Pearl Harbor

omorrow, we’ll have hot chocolate.

As I do so, I’ll tell my grandchildren about tomorrow’s being not just a day for the Oxford Lions Club Christmas Parade but also “a date that will live in infamy” – the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the United States was compelled to join a war that would prove unlike any ever before imagined.

I’ll tell them how my father had already joined the U.S. Navy earlier that year and was stationed in Michigan, training in foundry work at Ford Motor Company for later service on a repair ship. I’ll tell them how their greatgrandfather was still a teenage boy, sitting at a Walgreens drugstore in downtown Dearborn, drinking a cup of hot chocolate to steel himself against December’s cold, when he heard the news of the Japanese ambush over the radio and immediately returned to base.

They’ll learn how, five time zones to the west, my old friend Henry Holland was among those caught in the heart of the surprise attack.

He was a young Navy man, too, and was on his ship – pardon my disremembering which one – when the terror started raining down on that corner of Paradise.

If they can stay still long enough to listen just a bit more, my grandchildren will hear how Georgia St. Amand (nee Sims), then 13, was living on Oahu when she witnessed the attack.

She and her mother had just dropped off her father, a Navy commander, for duty aboard his ship and were driving back to their inland home on a mountainside road overlooking Battleship Row in the harbor when the first wave of planes started dropping bombs and torpedoes onto the conveniently arranged fleet.

My daddy never went farther than the Chesapeake Bay while working on a repair ship, but aboard other ships he later survived fierce winter storms in the North Atlantic and, after being transferred to the Pacific, fought in the Battle of Okinawa.

Henry Holland survived Pearl Harbor, served honorably for the rest of the war and eventually worked in the aerospace industry in Washington’s Puget Sound area before moving his family home to Carroll County, Mississippi.

Georgia’s dad also survived Pearl Harbor without a scratch, although it was a week before his family knew whether he was healthy, wounded or dead.

He served throughout the war and beyond, achieving the rank of admiral before retiring.

and eventually became a college professor.

Lynn Castens, Henry Holland, Georgia St. Amand and their generation – both overseas and at home – won a war in Europe, Africa and the Pacific, then rebuilt a country that had lived through a decade and a half of deprivation.

That generation raised families, pursued careers, coached Little League, built houses, wrote books, invented computers, designed cities, grew food, preached the Gospel, taught children, stayed patriotic, and recognized their own wrongs and tried to change.

I’m not sure my self-indulgent generation was ever up to finishing what they started.

But I can finish one thing my dad started: I’m going to symbolically finish that cup of cocoa he abandoned at that lunch counter so long ago, using it to toast him and his fellow members of the Greatest Generation.

OPD: Simple precautions cut burglary chances Holiday breaks usually mean an increase in burglaries in Oxford, as in other college towns, as many residences are left unoccupied for days or even weeks at a time. Oxford Citizen reporter Errol Castens visited with Oxford Police Major Jeff McCutchen this week for some perspective on the problem, how police officers work to curb it and what residents can do to help themselves and their neighbors.

ERROL CASTENS: How much do burglaries actually go up during December and January?

JEFF MCCUTCHEN: Our biggest time for burglaries is when they know the students are gone.

Thanksgiving is a big time for burglaries because you know almost all students are going to be gone for that week. Christmas break is not quite as bad as it once was, because you have a lot more people here during the winter session and intersession.

Still, it’s busy for us. Come December and January, we completely change our focus. What we try to do is to put as many bodies on the street as we can, day and night, during this time.

We’re looking for burglars; we’re looking for people who are either casing a location, or we catch them in a neighborhood doing stuff and being places they shouldn’t be, and we try to run them off or make arrests.

We ask our residents who are staying in town, if something doesn’t look right, especially during the holidays, give us a call and let us come check it out.

Don’t feel like you’re bothering us or that it’s nothing; hey, that’s what we’re here for. Let us deal with that. You never know; you may keep a whole street from become victims of burglary.

CASTENS: Other than being vigilant to watch out for the neighborhood as a whole, are there any particular precautions for residents who aren’t leaving town – particularly those who live in complexes where many apartments will obviously be vacant?

MCCUTCHEN: We’ve looked at a lot of data over the last five years just for Oxford. Really, if you lock your doors, you’re so much less likely to become a victim in Oxford. Now for different towns maybe the dynamic is different, but for us we’ve found that if you’ll lock your stuff up, most people are going to go somewhere else, because it’s an easier target.

Lafayette trio looking to bring back W in MS-AL game

B

efore Eli Johnson begins his career at Ole Miss, the Lafayette offensive tackle wants to help lead Mississippi to a win over Alabama. Johnson, running back Tyrell Price and linebacker Quin Jones will all be in Hattiesburg this coming week preparing for the annual Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game.

Johnson has all but wrapped up his school work at Lafayette. He only needs to take his exams to graduate. Next month, he will be at Ole Miss, and getting ready for the spring. Until that time comes, Johnson wants to have some fun with his friends.

“I’m looking to go and have a good time and hopefully beat Alabama,” Johnson said. “I’m ready to move on to the next level. Friday was my last regular season day and then I have that next Monday and Tuesday to go when I get back. I’ll be taking exams that next week. Everything is looking like it should with my grades.”

Johnson hasn’t set up a schedule just yet at Ole Miss. His position coach, Matt Luke, has told him that everything would come together in that regard. Johnson is one of nine high school prospects from around the country that will be in school for the spring semester.

“I don’t know if I will find out anything about that this weekend. It will probably be last minute,” he said. “I will probably have to take college algebra because I didn’t take a math this year. Then I might take college biology again, but I’m not for sure just yet.”

Later this month, Johnson will be traveling to play in the Offense-Defense AllAmerican Bowl in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The game will be Jan. 1, which means Johnson will not be at the Sugar Bowl, the expected destination of the Rebels this year.

Difference maker Crawford’s faith in Rangers pays off for everyone

There wasn't a doubt in Justin Crawford's mind that the Rangers of Northwest Mississippi Community College would eventually have success. He had confidence in head coach Jack Wright and even if the program was coming off just one win, Crawford was all in. This afternoon, the No. 1 Rangers tangle with No. 2 Rochester (Minn.) in the Mississippi Bowl. The winner will be crowed the NJCAA champion in football for the 2015 season.

It may be hard for some believe that the Rangers could go from last to first, but Crawford knew he could help change things around.

“From the time I got (to Senatobia), I was confident.

I talked with Coach Jack Wright about the rushing records here,” Crawford said.

“I set a goal for myself that I wanted to break most of the records. And all of them if I can. I knew that if I was able to do that, we would win more games.”

Team is big with Crawford.

The sophomore from Columbus, Georgia only had good things to say about the guys that make up the roster, and what they had done for him.

“I feel like I have really developed my game much more than I did when I first got here,” Crawford said. “It's going to be a big game for me and my teammates. It feels good to know that you can

go 100 percent and that everyone else behind you is going to go 100 percent right behind you.”

Crawford, who set the single-season rushing title and the career rushing title at NWCC, has never experienced a championship. Winning big is a new concept to him, and several of the other Rangers.

“I've never gotten close to winning a title or anything like that in the playoffs,” said Crawford, who has 1,466 yards and 14 touchdowns this season and just over 3,000 in his career. “It was really big when we won the (MACJC) state championship. Everybody wanted it, that's why we got it. With me leading them, everyone else fell in behind. Anything is

possible and we just have to keep fighting to the end. No matter what.”

Over the past two seasons, Crawford has become a better runner, and a better person.

“It's really been a good stepping stone for me,” he said.

Today's game will be the final one for Crawford at the junior college level. He still has one more semester before he can play at a fouryear school.

“I graduate in May so I will be going to class and working out. I'll take a couple of visits,” said Crawford, who will sign in February. “Right now Louisville, Southern Miss and (Texas) A&M are TURN TO CRAWFORD PAGE 18

AJ Brown dazzles in 6A title win for Starkville Yellow Jackets

Starkville’s AJ Brown has amazed fans all season long with his incredible talent. The senior has come to Ole Miss and Vaught-Hemingway Stadium this year to watch the Rebels. Friday night, he was able to combine the two together on the field. And help the Yellowjackets win a state championship in the process.

Brown made 10 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown in the 27-7 win over Petal. He had a one-handed catch, but it was as his foot hit out of bounds. No matter. It was all about the win for Brown.

“I didn’t care what I had to do. I wanted to do my best to get a win,” said Brown, who tweeted that he was excited about Ole Miss’ Laquon Treadwell watching him play Friday night. “(Treadwell) is like my brother. It meant everything to me that he was here. I talk to him about everything. He talks to me about things I need to work on and stuff like that. He’s probably going to tell me some things I need to do better out here for the next level.”

It’s been hard to get much out of Brown about schools, and playing at the next level this fall. His focus has been Starkville and winning games.

2015 MHSAA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

A.J. Brown, about his friendship with Ole Miss’ Laquon Treadwell He’s headed to play in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game this week, and then he’s headed to play in the Under Armour All-American Bowl next month. Brown said Treadwell, regarded as one of the nation’s best wideouts, doesn’t talk much about Ole Miss with him.

“The atmosphere is crazy here on Saturdays,” Brown added. “I don’t know right now. I haven’t set up any

officials, but I’m starting to right after this.”

Mississippi State is one of the schools that is after Brown. So is Alabama. The Rebels, Bulldogs and Crimson Tide are the three programs that Brown has mentioned the most during any interviews about recruiting.

“The talent is tremendous here.

Nobody believes in us after we went down in the third round,” Brown said of his talented high school team. “This is huge doing this with these boys right here. The (MS-AL) game is going to be fun. That’s all I have to say.”

Brown did add that having a quarterback who can get him the ball is a big factor in regards to the school he picks. Ole Miss is expected to have Chad Kelly back in 2016. Dak Prescott is out of eligibility at Mississippi State.

“It’s a factor, especially a team that throws it around a lot and they have a good quarterback. That plays a big part,” said Brown, who admitted he feels the pressure to stay near home and play for MSU. “There is a lot of pressure to stay in Starkville. Oxford’s Abraham named Gatorade Player of Year

Oxford football coach Johnny Hill has said a number of times that he had the best quarterback, and player, in the state of Mississippi. The folks that vote for the Gatorade Player of the Year award agreed.

Senior Jack Abraham was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Mississippi for the 2015 season. He has thrown 53 touchdowns and for over 4,500 yards this year as he helped lead the Chargers to the MHSAA Class 5A state title game.

“Not only this year, but what he has done over the last three years is just phenomenal,” Johnny Hill said. “You just don’t see quarterbacks throw it around like he does with that consistent of a percentage and his QB rating. If you throw for 126 touchdowns in a career, and 53 in a season against just five picks, that’s pretty phenomenal now.”

Stan Hill has coached Abraham his entire varsity career.

He said that Abraham deserves every award that comes his way.

“I think they nailed it. I couldn’t think of another player in the state that would get it,” Stan Hill said. “I think he’s been excellent. He has 53 touchdowns and there was probably six games where he didn’t even play after halftime. It’s a special award and he deserves every bit of it. He’s playing an extremely high level right now and I think other coaches see that. He is one they are worried about.”

There have been a lot of impressive games for Abraham during his career, but there hasn’t been a better single drive than the one he led the Chargers on to win the Germantown contest two weeks ago.

“It was a thing of beauty. I got him on the headset just before the drive, just talking with him and he said ‘Coach, it’s fine, we got em,’” Stan Hill said. “The level of confidence, it’s what we do. Simmons too much for Resurrection in 1A title game

Tavares Johnson and his Blue Devils from Hollandale-Simmons sang to their fans following Friday’s MHSAA Class 1A state title game at VaughtHemingway Stadium.

There was a lot to be happy about for the Blue Devils, who defeated Resurrection Catholic 25-9 to capture their first state championship. Johnson said the entire town of Hollandale, or close to it, was in attendance.

“We have had overwhelming support from everybody in the city and with that in mind, I just want to thank them,” Johnson said pointing up

to the fans wearing blue and white. “Nobody wants to go home. They just did a phenomenal job of traveling down here. I think it just brings the entire community closer together.”

Simmons, headlined by Mississippi State commit Nero Nelson, started slowly, falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter and trailing until the 4:59 mark of the second quarter.

“I was a little worried about them. They had some size and athletes all over the field, so we knew we had to come in and play our A game,” Johnson said. “We thought we were faster than they were and we wanted to expose

Chandler Robinson threw two touchdowns in less than two minutes late

in the first half to get the Blue Devils (12-0 overall) on the board and rolling.

Robinson finished with three touchdowns overall, with Marquez Pam scoring two touchdowns overall.

Simmons scored 25 unanswered points until Patrick Watts broke the streak with a late touchdown run for the Eagles, who finished the year 13-1.

“It’s a relief that it’s fi-

nally over. We did what we set out to do,” Johnson said. “We wanted to prove to the state that there is good football played in Hollandale and I think we proved it.”

The Eagles finished with just 95 total yards in the loss.

“We had our shots at big plays. We had a couple of dropped balls and missed throws,” said coach Scott Sisson. “A couple of times we just missed blocks. Bassfield rolls past East Webster to win fourth straight title

AJ Moore posed for a picture along with his brother, Jamal Peters and some of his mentors from Bassfield Friday evening. The former Yellowjacket, now playing for the Ole Miss Rebels, couldn’t hide his pride for his school.

For the fourth straight season, Bassfield was able to hoist a trophy. The Yellowjackets (14-2) defeated East Webster 39-20. And it wasn’t even that close.

“It’s just a blessing. I’m super proud of these guys and I want to give a shout out to the players and Coach (Lance) Mancuso,” Moore said. “It’s just a tradition of winning. I know the work that Bassfield puts in the offseason. I know if they keep their head on straight, they’ll go back every year. We have a great coaching staff and they just to go work every offseason. That’s the goal every year.”

Moore said it was cool to be able to watch the victory from the stands, sitting amongst his family and friends from home.

Bassfield controlled the game from the beginning, holding the Wolverines (14-2) to just 204 yards. Mancuso said it was the best defensive

game of the season by his unit.

“We challenged them all week. We knew they had a great quarterback, a great scheme offensively,” Mancuso said. “We had some guys step up and some younger guys that played those roles on the scout team that got us ready for tonight. Those guys deserve a lot of credit. The plan was awesome, and I think it showed tonight. It was by far the most complete defensive performance we had all year.”

Bassfield totaled 341 yards on the ground as four runners gained at least 41 yards. Timothy Arnold also completed 7 of his 13 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. Six different players scored at least one touchdown for Bassfield, which led 20-0 at the half and 33-0 after the third quarter.

“That was by far the best defense we played all year. Their defense over powered us,” said East Webster quarterback Jack Wilson. “Our defense did an amazing job. We put our defense in terrible positions, and I take the blame for that. We couldn’t get the ball going. Jackets roll past Petal in 6A state title game

Ricky Woods has himself another state championship. The Starkville Yellowjackets, and their roster full of Division I talent, defeated Petal 27-7 Friday night in the MHSAA Class 6A state title game Friday night.

Sophomore Andre Swanigan led the Yellowjackets with 161 yards on 24 carries. He finished with three touchdowns to pace a rushing attack that totaled 246 yards. AJ Brown added 10 catches for 117 yards, including a 32yard reception for a touchdown in the victory.

For Woods, it was his eighth state championship overall. He won four straight from 2003-2006 at South Panola. He also won two at Ackerman and most recently won a title during a short coaching stint in Tennessee.

“We had our starting tailback get

hurt last week and we had our sophomore come in and play well,” said Woods, his sweatshirt drenched after being drenched with the bucket of Powerade. “We’ve played well all year, I thought. We’ve gotten better.

The kids like each other and they play well together, play as a team. I don’t think I had any discipline problems all year. I think that’s first time I can say that since 1997.”

Starkville (14-1) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first 16 minutes of the game to gain control. Swanigan sandwiched scoring runs of 8 and 18 yards in between Brown’s 32-yard touchdown catch. Swanigan capped the scoring on the night for both teams with a 1-yard run with 7:22 left in the third quarter. His run ended an 11-play, 76-yard drive that took 4:26 off the clock.

Collins rallies late to top Charleston

Tigers rip up St. Stanislaus

Even with his team down 20 points to Charleston, Ryan Earnest knew his Collins Tigers would respond. Down a touchdown with 28 seconds left, Earnest still felt like his Tigers had a chance. He was right on both accounts.

Collins won a thrilling game over Charleston, 34-32, in the MHSAA Class 3A state title game Saturday afternoon at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The game-tying score was a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Calvin Keys.

The game-winning score was a 2-point pass from Detric Hawthorne to his brother, Derric Hawthorn in the corner of the end zone.

“I’m proud of these kids, this community. They kept fighting. It’s who these kids are,” Earnest said with the gold ball in his hands. “We have faced adversity all year. What we’ve been through, we’re just glad to have this opportunity. This is the result.”

Asked what the plan would have been on offense if Keys hadn’t scored on a kickoff, Earnest said the plan was to work the sideline through the air in order to save time.

“We were hoping to give Keys a chance because when the ball is in his hands, good things happen,” Earnest said. “But God had other plans. I knew when he got outside there, he had it.

Great job by our kickoff return team.”

It was the second straight win in the title game for Collins, which finished 15-1. Both victories have come at Charleston’s expense. Charleston led 26-6 at the half and was up 32-26 fol-

Jeffrey Simmons barely looked winded after Saturday’s MHSAA Class 4A state title game. Simmons and Noxubee County wrecked St. Stanislaus to the tune of a 44-23 win at VaughtHemingway Stadium. Simmons was busy from the start. He finished with 3.5 sacks of St. Stanislaus quarterback Myles Brennan, and all of those were in the first quarter and a half. He finished with four tackles overall, and a number of hurries.

“It feels good. It’s real emotional because this is the last time I’m playing with these guys,” said Simmons, who is one of the most highly regarded senior prospects in the nation.

“It’s not just us seniors that did it. Those underclassmen came to practice every week and just helped us out every day.”

This is the second straight title win for the Tigers (12-4 overall) and second straight win over the Rock-a-Chaws, who fell to 11-4 overall.

Noxubee led 25-0 at the half and never gave up an

offensive touchdown until the fourth quarter. Quarterback Timorris Conner had a banner night for the Tigers, throwing for 365 yards and four touchdowns. It was a much better night than the one Brennan had. Brennan came into the game with over 50 touchdowns and almost 5,000 yards. Both teams turned the ball over a combined nine times. Charleston finished with 310 total yards, while Collins had 278. Detric Hawthorne led Collins, going 15 of 32 for 198 yards.

ticket and free food, so I can’t say no,” Johnson said.

Jones said he was excited about playing for Team Mississippi and with his two good friends. He was looking to improve his offer list with a good showing.

“I know there will be a lot of college coaches from around the South there so it will be a pretty big week,” Jones said. “I’m looking to compete hard and have fun and try to get this W back to the Mississippi side. I’m taking it as a real challenge. To be the class that brings back a win to Mississippi is a big thing to me. Anytime you come out on the football field, I’m looking to win and compete. I know there is a lot of fun around it, but it’s going to come down to being real serious if the game gets close in the fourth quarter.”

Versatile is something Jones has been during his high school career. He caught some passes as a tight end this year, and he has the kind of athleticism that coaches can use in a lot of different places, including special teams.

“If I go down there and work as hard as I can, and just show my talents and how versatile I am, and how good of a player I am, I believe God is going to put me in the right position to get offers,” he said.

“Either way it goes, I’m happy with the offers I have now. I have a Louisiana Monroe offer right now and offers from East Mississippi and CoLin and Northwest, all the junior colleges. I’m just keeping my options open.”

Crawford and the No. 1 Rangers (10-1) are looking to win their first NJCAA national championship since the 1992 season
