The United States launched a ferocious, around-the-dock aerial assault on military targets in Baghdad and other cities Friday, and invading ground troops penetrated 100 miles into Iraq. The ancient capital's skyline exploded in balls of flame, leaving Saddam Hussein's Old Palace compound and other symbols of his government ablaze.

The bombs are falling half a world away in Iraq, but war can have an impact much closer to home. The uncertainty war and threat of terrorism can contribute to a sense of personal uneasiness. "It causes us to question a lot of our assumptions about the world," said Thomas Witty, a psychologist with North Mississippi

Medical Center Behavioral Health Center. Local psychologists said they have not yet seen any war-related anxiety in their clinics, but that doesn't mean the fighting isn't on people's minds. Gloria Stanford of Saltillo said she is concerned about how the youngest members of her family are dealing with the war. "Little kids don't reason like

adults do," Stanford said. One of her great-grandchildren had an outburst at school earlier this week. Family members found out later that a group of boys had been talking about the war and terrorists. · "They thought they were going to die yesterday," Stanford said. Soldiers surrender • Hordes of Iraqi soldiers, including an entire division of 8,000 men and some 200 tanks, have surrendered to coalition forces in southern Iraq.
