Welcome To Our
North & South Pontotoc
CAMPUS
Brock Puckett, Superintendent
Pontotoc City
Dr. Michelle Bivens, Superintendent
Career Center
Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! Our year ended sooner than we wanted last year and this one will be markedly different than those in the past. Please be assured that every staff member at all campuses are working extremely hard and will be vigilant about keeping the environment your child learns in as safe as possible from the threat of Covid-19. It is a great pleasure to welcome both our returning families and those who are new to our system. We are excited that you have chosen to allow us in the Pontotoc County School District to teach and care for your child. We consider it our greatest honor to serve you and your child. I cannot express the excitement from me and our staff about the upcoming opportunity we will have with you and your child to develop a community of lifelong learners that supports one another for the betterment of Pontotoc County. I cannot commend our administration, teachers, and maintenance staff enough for the work that they have completed this summer to make our schools better learning environments! We strive to ensure that your children have the best learning environments that are comfortable, welcoming, and conducive to student learning. To that end many hours have been spent cleaning, painting, repairing, rethinking, and reimagining to make your child’s workspace the most productive it can be. August is a very exciting time for those of us involved in education because it allows us to develop new goals, build new relationships and embark upon new challenges. And the challenges coming our way this year will be greater than ever before, but let me assure you, our staff will rise to meet them and give your child the best education possible. Our Systemwide Goals this year highlight academic, social, and emotional learning. While improving student achievement is an important part of our mission, we know it is essential to focus on the social and emotional needs of our students as well. As parents, you can “help us help you” develop your student into the most well rounded person they can possibly be with equal attention given to their academic and social development. One of the most important parts of my job is to be in the schools on a regular basis connecting with teachers and students. I also look forward to engaging with parents in the coming year. Our Teacher Advisory Committee members will again join me to hold meetings each month over the course of the year to provide feedback on how we can improve our schools. We welcome the chance to both share our opportunities and challenges and to address any questions or concerns that you may have. We believe in transparency and addressing the needs of all of our stakeholders. Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve you and we excitedly look forward to a great school year, in which, we will “relentlessly pursue the exceptional”!
Pontotoc City School District’s staff has spent the month looking forward to the return of students for the 2020-2021 school year. The early close of school last year left us really missing our students. However, COVID-19 has created many challenges for us as we approach the first day of school. We have begun to see the impact of COVID-19 in our community and with our own families. When the Pontotoc City School District Core Beliefs were revised four years ago, we knew that “Warriors are Winners because we are Resilient. In the last few months, COVID-19 has given us many opportunities to practice resilience. School closed and transitioned to off campus learning unexpectedly. We spent the summer preparing for learning on campus and off campus. This is a unique time in history and an opportunity for us as educators to adapt with the changes. The word we have unofficially adopted for the upcoming school year is “nimble.” We will start the school year in a different manner than ever before. Hopefully, by the end of the school year, things will be closer to normal. Many things will change between the beginning and the end of the school year. As information and guidance changes, we will be nimble and change with it. Although much will be different during the 2020-2021 school year, some things will never change. We will love and teach our students. We will push them to do their best in every endeavor. We will continue to support our community, staff and parents as they partner with us to cultivate Warriors of Distinction. Finally, at every possible opportunity, we will expose our students to school as it always has been. We are excited to offer a traditional return as well as a virtual return option. The district is confident that we can develop a safe learning environment and mitigate the potential spread of Covid-19 using safe practices and procedures. For more updates, check the district’s website and social media accounts regularly. Pontotoc City School District looks forward to a student-centered school year focused on health, safety, academics, and extracurriculars. This year will be different and imperfect. Although we will do our best, we will make mistakes. Mid-year changes will happen. As always, we will strive to keep all of our Warriors engaged and safe while they work toward their goals. Pontotoc is an amazing community, and together we will ensure that our students continue their pathway to success. PONTOTOC STRONG & WARRIOR PROUD!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Pontotoc Ridge Career & Technology Center. While we all know the 2019-2020 school year ended in a whirlwind, and given the circumstances that we are starting the 2020-2021 school year, I and my staff are still excited to get back to the grind and see our students! As we enter this new school year, we will all be faced with many challenges. Our district has worked hard this summer to provide safeguards and procedures to ensure the health and safety of all of our staff and students. We will all be trained on proper cleaning techniques and will be cleaning our buildings and classrooms on a regular basis. Please refer to our district website for more information regarding our procedures and information related to COVID closures, etc. We embrace the challenges of the future while we continue to cherish and celebrate the traditions of our past. Our remarkable staff, involved parents and committed students come together to make Pontotoc Ridge Career & Technology Center a wonderful and unique place. Parents and students can stay informed about all things PRCTC by subscribing to Remind, a one-way text messaging service. To join send the text @prctc2 to 81010. Facebook users can also like and follow our page. You can also visit our website at www.pcsd.ms and click on the Pontotoc Ridge Career & Technology page. Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth for all students.

COUNTY SCHOOL
INFORMATION Pontotoc County School District will have different procedures
School is about to start, and it will look differently than it has ever looked in the Pontotoc County School District because of the Covid-19 pandemic. All staff members in the schools will strive daily to keep students and staff alike as safe as possible. This county as a strong support level from the parental and community level in each of these schools. We know this will continue because of the desire to see that your children and grandchildren will continue to receive a quality education. With this in mind, the Pontotoc County School District has released guidelines for parents and grandparents to follow on a daily basis.
Before you leave for school:
Please note: It is imperative for parents to screen their child’s health on a daily basis. Students should remain home if feeling ill. Parents should screen for the following: Fever 100.4 or higher Cold or flu like symptoms Gastrointestinal problems Persistent cough Upon a positive COVID-19 test results, parents are strongly urged to contact their child’s principal immediately.
After arriving at school:
Protocols have been put in place for facilities impacted by Covid-19. Students will have their temperature checked each morning before entering buildings. Anyone with a fever of 100.4 or greater will be sent home. Buildings and facilities will be cleaned and sanitized regularly throughout the day. Teachers will be required to wear masks or shields if they are within 6 feet of a student or employee. Students must wear masks. (See article on Mask Guidance) Students will be provided with two washable/reusable masks at the beginning of the school year. Additional masks can be purchased if needed. You may also choose to purchase disposable masks and send with your student(s). Students and faculty are encouraged to bring their own water bottles. Buses will run regular routes, but if you are able to transport your own child/ children, we encourage you to do so, as this will reduce the numbers of students riding buses. Hand sanitizer will be available on all buses and in multiple locations throughout each campus.
Students will eat breakfast and lunch in their classrooms. It will be provided in a disposable “to go” plate. We encourage parents/ guardians to pay for student meals through the MySchoolBucks App, but traditional payments will still be accepted.
If you child is virtual
Choosing to change or switch your child/student between traditional and virtual learning models can only be done at the start of school or at the end of each nine-weeks grading period. Please note: If you choose to have your student participate in the virtual learning model, he/she will be allowed to participate in athletics/extracurricular activities, however, transportation must be provided by parent/ guardian.

CITY SCHOOL
INFORMATION
Pontotoc City school guidelines for school re-entry
The Pontotoc City School district has worked to put into place three levels of school operation, from a low spread to a substantial spread so that staff can be prepared in a better way for what the future may hold. Re-entry teams made up of administrators, teachers, school resource officers, transportation directors, food service director, healthcare professionals, and school counselors at both the elementary and secondary
levels have spent a tremendous amount of time exploring and discussing multiple return options. The teams also weighed the benefits and negative impacts of a traditional return, alternating schedules, and continued distance learning. Ultimately, the teams concluded that a traditional return is best for the students and community. However, there are some parents who
feel it necessary not to allow their children to come to the traditional school, and have opted to do virtual school. Here are a few guidelines for those parents and students: Students in grades 2-12 participating in Virtual School will receive assignments via the District’s Learning Management System. Students in PreK-1 will receive paper/ pencil packets which are more developmen-
tally appropriate for that age group. Virtual School students will have access to a virtual teacher as needed. Virtual School students who do not have reliable internet at home will visit Pontotoc City School District’s Alternative School once weekly to submit assignments and receive assignments for the following week. All Virtual students will visit, by appointment, to complete graded assignments.
The basic guidance for traditional school re-entry is as follows Face coverings
Recommendations regarding face coverings differ based on the level of community spread. At this point the governor has ordered face coverings, that can change in the future. Information will be provided to staff, students, and families on proper use, removal, and washing of cloth face coverings. Any policy regarding face coverings should be sensitive to the needs of students and staff with medical issues that make the wearing of a face covering inadvisable. Face coverings must not violate dress code policies. Close contact is considered as unmasked exposure of 15 minutes or more with less than six feet of distance between individuals. Students will supply their own face coverings. If a student arrives without one, the school will supply one to the student and make the parent contact to reinforce the necessity for face coverings. Staff will be provided a Pontotoc branded face covering unlike those being sold as a fundraiser for identification purposes. Staff may wear it or wear one of their own. The district-provided face coverings will differentiate us as employees which will be important for our students.
General safety precautions
Students will be encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottle from home. Yeti-type cups are prohibited. Water fountains will be removed and replaced with water filling stations. Education will be given to students regarding proper use of stations. Staff will reinforce with students. District maintenance personnel will ensure ventilation systems are working properly and increase circulation of outdoor air to the greatest extent possible. Staff and students will be allowed to bring hand sanitizer from home to use. Hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol will be provided by the school at various locations.
Parent information
Students with an internal temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher will not be allowed to enter school. Do not send your child to school sick. Students will be screened each day on arrival. Parents will be required to pick up students who have signs or symptoms of Covid. If a child is not picked up within one hour, the school nurse will contact the school resource officer who will work with the family to find someone who can pick up the child. Parents are encouraged to notify the schoo I four child has symptoms of Covid, is awaiting Covid results, tests positive or has been exposed. Precautions will be taken to minimize Covid exposure at school, but risk will still exist.
Levels explained
The 2020-2021 Re-entry Plan is organized in three progressive levels: Low/No Spread, Minimal/Moderate Spread, and Substantial Spread. The Low/No Spread level is looked at as a preventative spread phase. Much of what makes up this level is very close to “normal” school, only with extra precautions in place to keep spread as minimal as possible. The Minimal/Moderate Spread level adds even more precautions. This would be enforced if COVID-19 cases begin to rise. Lastly, the Substantial Spread level is just that, substantial numbers of positive COVID-19 cases. As a team working together to ensure the safety of students and em-
ployees, as well as continue the tradition of high educational expectations.
Bus transportation
Face coverings must be worn, family groups will stay together on the bus. Social distance as much as space will allow. Buses will be sanitized between routes. Windows will be open to allow for ventilation. Because social distancing will not be possible for students riding a school bus, we encourage parents to provide their own transportation to and from school, especially students with underlying conditions that would make them more susceptible to contracting the Covid-19 virus.
Arrival and dismissal
Students will arrive and dismissal times will be 7:30 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Students will not be considered tardy for time spent waiting for temperatures to be taken. Temperatures will be checked before entering the building or classrooms and each students temperature will be documented. A student will be isolated and sent home if their temperature is 100.4 degrees or higher. Hand sanitizer will be provided for staff and students. Students at Pontotoc Elementary, D.T. Cox and Pontotoc Middle School will be given a lanyard with a laminated card/tag on a cloth necklace. Temperatures will be taken inside the building to avoid outside temperature interference. The child’s temperature will be written on the tag with a permanent marker. In the classroom the teacher will record the temperature on a shared google sheet and wipe of the temperature and hang in the hallway. A designated staff member will collect these after the tardy bell and disinfect it for the next days use. Pontotoc Junior High and High school student temperatures will be recorded on a notecard or sticker. It will the students entrance ticket to their first period class. All visitors must have face coverings, have temperature screenings. No visitors will be allowed beyond the catch area. Students will be dismissed in smaller group with car riders and walkers first followed by bus groups.
In school traffic and transitions
Hallways and high touch surfaces will e cleaned frequently throughout the day. Adults will disinfect desk and tabletops in classrooms an other high touch surfaces after each class. Flow of traffic will be controlled as students walk to and from classes with flow reminders posted. Spaces will be marked to encourage social distancing protocol. Transitions will be staggered and or lengthened between classes as set by building administrators to the best way practical or possible. Hand sanitizer will be available for use when entering a room. If the spread becomes moderate, teachers will move between classrooms rather than students where possible. Staff will be required to disinfect desks, doorknobs and any frequently touched surface int eh classroom between each class change. Additional time will be allowed between classes to allow for cleaning. This task will not be carried out by students. Break and recess procedures will be addressed in individual school plans but will still occur daily with social distancing considerations in place. The number of students allowed in restrooms at one time will be limited with signs posted as to that limit. There will be frequent cleaning and disinfecting of the restrooms throughout the day and documented by jan-
itors and monitored by building administrators.
Cafeteria
There will be no lunch meal choice. Plates will consist of five components. PreK and Kindergarten will eat in the cafeteria each day. Other grades will alternate between cafeteria, other common areas, classrooms and out door when appropriate. When students are allowed to eat in the cafeteria, students will face in the same direction so there is no face to face seating based on CDC recommendations. Grab and go breakfast with social distancing will be established by schools. Disposable plates and utensils will be used.
Athletics
For away games: Athletes will ride the bus as normal to game. Students are encouraged to ride home with a parent/ guardian from the game. Utilize more buses for additional spacing Face coverings are required on the bus. At the contest, normal contest guidelines. Seating and limits remain at max capacity. Face coverings are required for everyone inside the contest arena. Social distancing will be observed as much as possible. For football games Football sidelines are extended additional yardage and cheer will be placed in the west endzone.(Per MHSAA). The band will only perform at home games. If the spread becomes moderate, only a pep band will be allowed. After the game football players will dress and leave the field house on the north side. Parents and spectators will not be allowed in the fenced area. Visiting cheer or band teams will not be allowed to enter the stadium. For Volleyball, Basketball and dance, regular contest guidelines will be released later. However spectators will be required to were face coverings.
Concession stands
Everybody wants to eat, right? Well the concession stands will be there to offer all the traditional food you love at ball games. Concession stand workers will be required to wear face coverings and gloves, to clean before and after each contest in the interior of each location. No students are allowed in the concession area. School custodians will disinfect the entire gym facility and concession after it has been cleaned. All facilities will be cleaned using a disinfectant spray after each contest.
Communication with parents
All communication with the public will be shared from the district level. All PCSD employees will receive training and professional development to teach and reinforce good hygiene measures and social distancing to slow the spread of the illness. Updates will be shared in the regular weekly district newsletter. A pandemic specific email address is available for communication and concerns. If the spread becomes moderate Communication will be distributed through AIM Messaging, as needed. Daily updates will be posted to social media and shared via email, website, and district app. Messages will be shared using School Status, AIM Messages--transcribable forms. Local news outlets, The Pontotoc Progress and television stations, will receive press releases as needed.
Instructional
All backpacks in grades preK-12 are required to be clear. Parents and students are encouraged to wipe down their backpacks each morning prior to returning to school.
Cubbies or individual hooks will be provided for preK-second grade students and students in grades 3-12 will store as usual. Backpacks hanging on desks would ensure space. Grading and assessments: district pacing will be observed. Teachers will increase in class digital assignments to increase student familiarity with digital assignments. Teachers may wear gloves for grading, and if the spread becomes moderate, teachers will have the option to allow paper and pencil assignments to remain untouched for 48 hours. Students will be required to complete at least two graded teacher feedback assignments per week. Groups may have no shared supplies as much as possible. Shared supplies such as calculators and computers will be cleaned. For session planning PHS courses will require a syllabus with major assignments listed on Day 1. Teachers will increase digital assignments in preparation for closure, which means they will incorporate lessons in which students must login, download materials, view feedback, view grades and practice general troubleshooting in grades 2-12. Visitors in the classroom will be restricted this year. There will be no parent volunteers. Teachers will not use whole class carpet time. It may take place without a rug with a limited number of students. Access to device carts, restrooms and other spaces will be limited according to social distancing protocols. That will depend upon nice of space. Special education, EL, and other activity teachers will pull students from classrooms observing staggered transitioning and social distancing protocols for room size while there is a low spread. If the spread becomes moderate these activities will be pushed into the classrooms with instructional carts. Traditional grades 2-12 will use chrome books in the classroom. All course content will be available and used via a Learning Management system. Residential internet services will be the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Outdoor Wifi will be available at the school parking lots. If the spread becomes substantial and learning becomes virtual, school buses with WiFi will be at designated locations at scheduled times.
Extended absence
If Covid-19 affects student attendance there is also protocol for student extended absence. The parent or student will contact teacher to obtain missed work at school, office pickup or digital delivery. Teachers will provide additional instructional materials and videos as needed through zoom, google classroom or other formats. Printed material will be provided if necessary. If the spread reaches a moderate level with a high number of absences, school will provide a schedule of on-call teachers during the school day for digital and instructional support. Parents and students may contact any regularly assigned teacher during heir planning time. The on call reacher is for technical and instructional support outside teacher’s planning. Follow handbook guidance for make-up work access and grading.
Teacher and student resources
Supplies will not be shared in grades preK-sixth, they must have individual pencil pouches or boxes. When students must have materials that they don’t bring to class, teacher will provide them and they will be cleaned immediately after use. Cleaning docks will be available in each building for cleaning returned devices.
