Welcome To Our Campus Career Center

Pontotoc City

Patricia Ellison, Director

Wow! What a different and unique year we ALL experienced this past school year. The staff of Pontotoc Ridge Career & Technology Center met these unprecedented changes head-on with innovative teaching methods and sheer determination to continue instruction no matter the climate or environment. We feel strongly that the challenges faced this past year have contributed to the growth and professional development of our staff. After a much needed break, we are eager to begin

the 2021-2022 school year with our heads held high, a positive attitude and determination to train our students for the “real world”. We are excited to announce that we will be offering two new programs, Advanced Manufacturing and Information Technology. These two programs will replace our Furniture and Industrial Maintenance programs. We are excited about

the growth and development of these programs and feel confident that our students will enjoy being enrolled in them. We embrace the challenges of the future while we continue to cherish and celebrate the traditions of our past. Our remarkable staff, involved parents and committed students come together to make Pontotoc Ridge Career & Technolo-

Dr. Michelle Bivens, Superintendent gy Center a wonderful and unique place. Parents and students can stay informed about all things PRCTC by subscribing to Remind, a one-way text messaging service. Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth for all students.

North & South Pontotoc Brock Puckett, Superintendent

What a crazy past 18 months. It amazes me how the world has changed and all the experiences that we all have encountered as a result of the Covid pandemic. Everyone certainly pivoted and adjusted and did what we had to do to make it. I don’t suppose that should be a surprise, that is what we do in Pontotoc County. We take what we have and we make the absolute best of the situation or circumstance. I have never seen that spirit more at work than in the last 18 months. Students, parents, teachers, school staff, administrators, our state board of education, our state legislature, and our national government all pulled together to give our kids in Pontotoc County the best educational opportunities we could provide despite the uncertainties, interruptions, sicknesses, and guidelines put in place to limit the

spread of the virus. Many resources were made available to help our students each have their own computer. We were very close to this in pre-pandemic, but the resources made available allowed us to ensure every child had a device and we replaced many of the devices that we had that were at the end of their life and use. I want to personally thank each of the aforementioned groups that played such a huge role in us being able to have school in person when many kids across our country never had the opportunity to come into their classroom and learn with their teachers and friends. Personally, I am so grateful that my girls had the opportunity to learn in person this year and have the social

interactions that are so vitally important to their social and emotional health as well as their academic progress. The lionshare of the credit goes to the teachers and the students who were so resilient and took each quarantine, missed events and ballgames, wearing mask, social distancing, temperature check and Covid test in stride and absolutely made the best out of a less than ideal situation. I am so proud of you and glad that you guys had the grit and resilience to do what many other schools around the country could not or would not do. With that being said, welcome to the 2021-22 school year! It is a great pleasure to welcome both our returning families and those who are new to our system. We are excited that you have chosen to allow us in the Pontotoc County School District to teach and care for your child. We consider it our greatest honor to serve you and your child. I cannot express the excitement we here at PCSD have about the upcoming opportunity we will have to develop a community of lifelong learners that supports one another for the betterment of Pontotoc County. August is a very exciting time for those of us involved in education because it allows us to develop new goals, build new relationships and embark upon new challenges. And the challenges coming our way this year will be greater than ever before, but let me assure you, our staff will rise to meet them and give your

child the best education possible. Our Systemwide Goals this year highlight academic, social, and emotional learning. While improving student achievement is an important part of our mission, we know it is essential to focus on the social and emotional needs of our students as well. As parents, you can “help us help you” develop your student into the most well rounded person they can possibly be with equal attention given to their academic and social development. One of the most important parts of my job is to be in the schools on a regular basis connecting with teachers and students. I also look forward to engaging with parents in the coming year. Our Teacher Advisory Committee members will again join me to hold meetings each month over the course of the year to provide feedback on how we can improve our schools. We also hope to reestablish our Student Advisory Board and create a Parental Advisory Board. We welcome the chance to both share our opportunities and challenges and to address any questions or concerns that you may have. We believe in transparency and addressing the needs of all of our stakeholders. I would also like to let you know that we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the creation of North and South Pontotoc this year and invite you to share in the planned activities we will have to celebrate this great milestone in our schools’ histories. Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve you and we excitedly look forward to a great school year, in which we will “relentlessly pursue the exceptional”!

Why does summer move so much more quickly than all of the other seasons? I always laugh when people ask if we work in the summer. Wow, do we ever! While our students and their families have been enjoying some later mornings and more leisurely days, our Pontotoc City School District employees, on campus and at home, have been busy preparing for students to return for the 20212022 school year. However, I am not complaining. This year, I have enjoyed seeing more faces coming in and out of our buildings and our summer feeling more “business as usual” after last year’s early release and difficult work of planning to return to school amid a pandemic, all the time not knowing if or how long school as we knew it might last. Now, the people who do work on campuses during the summer leave in the afternoons feeling tired but grateful—grateful for completing needed tasks, for knowing a nearer-normal, and for the opportunity to provide more this year than last year for all our students. I am looking forward to this year with an anticipation last year couldn’t offer, and I hear the same feeling in our administrators, teachers, and families. We have reviewed last year’s re-entry plan and made changes based on CDC guidelines and our Warrior family’s needs. Masks will no longer be required, although anyone who feels more comfortable wearing one may certainly do so. We are happy to be able to transition to a later start time. PHS will implement a new digital technology career academy program for students interested in graphic design and video production as a career field. As the year progresses, students on each campus will see changes to the appearance of learning areas, with upgrades to ventilation, flooring, and other facility needs. As always, we welcome new faces and talents to our staff in all of our buildings and to our administrative team. Although some things will be different during the 20212022 school year, some at Pontotoc City will never change. Student safety is always our priority, so we continue to keep in mind that Covid-19 is still a reality for our community and our campuses. The district’s commitment to the social-emotional needs of our students will never change. We recognize that students’ needs and stress levels following such a hard year are different now, too, and

through partnerships with private and public institutions, we will be able to more fully address their needs in the coming year. The long-standing tradition of showcasing our students’ talents in academics, activities, and athletics will continue, as we celebrate a strong showing with state tests during an extremely difficult year and our 8th consecutive 4A All-Sports Award. School spirit and community pride in the opportunities we offer will always be my answer when asked what makes Pontotoc City distinct, and nothing has, or will, change those because those qualities live in our people. More than anything, the resilience our employees, students, and community members showed last year, along with the grace we all learned to more freely offer one another will continue, as well. The difficult year taught us many things, and as the administrative team wrote and reflected on their lessons, they unanimously agreed while the year wasn’t one anyone wanted to re-do, the lessons from it were definitely worth keeping in mind! Each year, a word comes—a word I always think will have a significant meaning for the year. It always does, and typically in ways I didn’t expect. Last year, before we knew about Covid, I had started talking about the word “nimble.” We saw how nimble we all had to be last year and will have to do so to some extent this year as we continue to meet CDC and Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) guidelines. However, this year the word “intentional” has been finding its way into my reading, conversations with others in the schools, and my quiet time. I don’t know entirely in what ways intent will show itself this year, but I do know that all we do in the Pontotoc City School District from summer planning, fall beginnings, winter pushes, and spring celebrations are to provide our students and teachers with a safe, welcoming place to showcase their talents and build those talents into skills that will help them flourish as leaders in their community and their work fields. Yes, I’m excited about the 2021-2022 school year, so enjoy the sunshine a little more, relax a little longer than usual, and get those school supplies ready because we’ve been here all summer preparing, and we can’t wait for you to come back to us for your best year ever!

Information Pontotoc county schools returning to in classroom traditional learning

The Pontotoc County School District, in collaboration with parents, teachers, principals, district leaders, state and local health officials, and other state officials, has developed guidance in determining plans and protocols for reopening schools for the 2021-2022 school year. The district has provided a tiered approach with clear steps for students and staff to return to school buildings and guidance throughout the school year. These plans and strategies are to ensure and prioritize the health and safety of all students and teachers for teaching and learning.

Pontotoc County School District focuses on the health and physical requirements, and necessary cleanliness protocol for reopening school buildings. We will continue to provide communication, support, and guidance as we navigate through the school year. The District has the authority and flexibility to close school buildings and utilize distance/ remote learning as needed. Revisions to these plans are possible and will be posted on the district website to reflect any changes. Students will not be required to wear face masks unless we are under a state mandate to do so.

We will communicate with local and state health officials and post sineage in our schools communicating Covid 19 symptoms as well as specific school guidelines. There will be protocol for students and staff who experience symptoms and ways to accommodate needs of students, staff and teachers whose families are at a higher risk will be outlined. While our community is at low or no spread these are the guidelines for the different areas of school.

Buses

Students who ride the buses will have hand sanitizer available on the bus.

You may wear a mask if you wish, but are not required to. Buses will be cleaned every day and aired out when not in use.

Cafeteria

Breakfast meals will be available at pick up locations and eaten in the classrooms at South Pontotoc Elementary, North Pontotoc Elementary, North Upper Elementary and North Middle School. Breakfast will be served traditionally for all other schools. Lunch will be served traditionally and all students will eat in the cafeteria at each location.

Teaching and learning

Additional instructional support will be provided to students at risk of not graduating, students with disabilities, English Language Learners and other students identified by teachers as being academically behind A distance/remote learning option will be available for students by parent choice in grades 2nd-12th for students that meet all of the district requirements and sign up by the established deadlines. If cases tick up and these guidelines change they will be posted on the Pontotoc City School District Website or Facebook.

Information

Pontotoc City School Back to school plan Pontotoc City School district plans to re-enter school as normal as possible with extra precautions in place to keep spread as minimal as possible. As of July 23, Pontotoc City School District will be mask friendly for 2021-2022 school year. Masks will not be required since no mask mandates have been issued. The Mississippi Department of Health does recommend to parents that masks should be worn indoors at school by all individuals who are not fully vaccinated. If you have any Covid-19 questions of the school district they should be emailed to covidinfo@pontotoc.k12. ms.us Here are the guidelines for re-entry into school from various departments.

Athletics

Athletes will ride the bus as normal to events. Students are encouraged to ride home with a parent/guardian from the game. Sports/Activities that sell concessions will be required to clean the facility after each contest. School custodians will disinfect after the facility has been cleaned. All facilities will be cleaned using a disinfectant spray after each contest.

Communication

All PCSD employees will receive training and professional development to teach and reinforce good hygiene measures and social distancing to slow the spread of the illness. Updates will be shared in the regular weekly district newsletter. Emails from building level administrators will be sent to all employees for regular weekly communication and COVID-19 updates as needed. Group text messages to communicate quickly and directly to employees will be used. Signage will be used throughout the district concerning COVID-19. FAQ updates will be sent via email to all district employees. Communication with parents will be done in a timely manner: employees should check and respond to emails within 2 days. If employees do not know the answer to a question, they should consult their building administrator for how to respond. PCSD will communicate with parents/guardians the daily procedures that will be taking place in all schools to ensure minimal exposure. PCSD will send out regular weekly newsletters and updates on the district website.

Local news outlets will receive press releases as needed (WTVA, WLOV,North Mississippi Daily Journal, Pontotoc Progress, etc.) FAQ will be updated as needed on the district website. A pandemic-specific email address is available for communication and concerns. It is listed in the second paragraph of this article. Infographics will be created to share proactive measures.

Cafeteria

“Grab and Go” breakfasts will be offered at all campuses. Students will eat lunch in the cafeteria with their classmates and teachers. Students will sit with the same students they sit with in the classroom.

Instructional

Group work will continue with no shared supplies to the extent possible and cleaning of supplies that must be shared (calculators, devices). No more than 4 students per group is suggested; however, this number will be dictated by space. Building-level administrators will plan for pull-out groups to meet the needs of their specific building. Teachers will plan 2 weeks in advance. PHS courses will require a syllabus with major assignments listed on Day 1 Teachers will develop lessons with a digital shift in mind. Teachers will incorporate lessons in which students must login, download materials, view feedback, view grades, and practice general troubleshooting at least weekly (grades 2-12). Administrators and grade-level chairs will identify and ensure priority standards (foundational skills) are taught and assessed according to building administrator guidance. It is suggested priority standards be taught by the end of first semester, if possible. A course syllabus is suggested beginning Day 1. This may be required by the building administrator (required for ALL PHS courses). District will follow social distancing protocols set by the CDC. Visitors to campuses and classrooms will be limited.

Virtual Choice Class Guidance

District will provide training for teachers on maximizing the use of selected learning management systems and online educational tools. District will provide training for parents and students, as requested, on the use of

selected learning management systems and online educational tools. District pacing will be followed. Lessons may differ, with the exception of major projects and benchmarks but must provide equitable learning experiences as faceto-face instruction. Teachers will provide a minimum of 2 graded assignments/teacher feedback per week. Information from grade or content planning meetings will be shared with the virtual teacher, for that area, as a means of keeping virtual and traditional instruction aligned. Administrators will assign proctors for assessments. Assessments may be paper/pencil or digital. Students and teachers will follow social distancing protocol during the face-to-face appointment.

Safety and Health

Clean/disinfect frequently touched surfaces frequently and shared objects after each use. Nurse office and medical equipment will be disinfected after every patient visit using approved Covid cleaner. Staff will be required to disinfect desks, doorknobs, and any frequently touched surface in classroom between each class change. Additional time will be allowed between class changes to allow for cleaning. This task will not be carried out by students. Students will be encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottle from home. Yeti-type cups are prohibited for students. Signage will be posted throughout the buildings to communicate how to stop the spread. COVID-19 symptoms, preventative measures, good hygiene, and school/ district specific protocols. District maintenance personnel will ensure ventilation systems are working properly and increase circulation of outdoor air to the greatest extent possible.

Parent Information

Do not send your child to school sick. Students will be screened each day upon arrival. Update all phone numbers

and SAMS information. Parents will be required to pick up students when contacted due to signs/symptoms of COVID. If a child is not picked up within 1 hour, the school nurse will contact the school resource officer who will work with the family to find someone who can pick up the child. Signs/Symptoms of COVID will be shared with parents. Parents are encouraged to notify the school if your child has symptoms of COVID, is awaiting COVID testing results, tested positive for COVID or has been exposed to COVID. Protocol for students presenting with signs and symptoms of Covid at school will be shared with parents. School check-out procedures will be shared with parents by building administrators. Precautions will be taken to minimize Covid exposure at school, but risk will still exist.

Quarantine if needed

Staff/students will be excluded from school if he/she tests positive OR is awaiting test results OR exhibits fever of 100.4 OR higher. Nurses will evaluate staff/ students who exhibit two or more of the following symptoms of Covid 19 to determine if exclusion is warranted. (Cough, low grade fever, shortness of breath, chills, muscle pain, headache, nau-

sea, sore throat, “sinus”, diarrhea , loss of smell or taste, new rash and fatigue). The school nurse will make the determination when symptoms are present. Staff/students who test positive for Covid will require a doctor’s note for re-entry to school. School nurses will document receipt of the note. Staff/Students will be treated as COVID-19 positive while awaiting test results. Staff/students will be quarantined based on most up to date CDC guidance if any member of their household is diagnosed as COVID positive. The first day of quarantine is the date the test occurred. Staff/students who have close contact with an individual who later tests positive for COVID-19 will be quarantined based on most up to date CDC guidance. Staff/students who have signs/symptoms of Covid and are NOT tested will be admitted back to school after 14 days if symptom free and no fever (without use of fever reducing meds) for at least 24 hours. When a PCSD staff/student tests positive for Covid, parents of students in contact with that staff/student member will be notified via form letter of Covid occurrence. The letter will not contain the location of contact, nor the name of the individual diagnosed with COVID.

Updated Covid-19 guidance for school year Friday, July 16 Mississippi Department of Health updated Public Health Guidance for the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 in Mississippi K-12 settings for the 2021-2022 school year – consistent with CDC guidelines. Here is the new guidance. All eligible students, teachers, and staff 12 years of age and older should receive COVID-19 vaccination. Masks should be worn indoors in school settings by all individuals (age 2 and older) who are not fully vaccinated.

Schools should maintain at least three feet of physical distance between students within classrooms, combined with indoor mask wearing by people who are not fully vaccinated, to reduce transmission risk. Routine screening testing of asymptomatic unvaccinated students, teachers and staff is recommended as an additional measure to prevent further transmission. Schools should continue to isolate COVID-19 infected students, teachers, and staff and continue contact tracing to identify exposed individuals for quarantine

and exclusion from the school setting. All students, teachers and staff who have symptoms of any infectious illness, regardless of vaccination status, should stay home from school and be evaluated by their healthcare provider. As a reminder, fully vaccinated students, teachers and staff: Do not have to wear a mask when indoors; Do not have to quarantine or be excluded from the school setting if they have COVID-19 exposure; and Do not have to be tested unless symptomatic.
