MHSAA Region I Marching Band Festival Saturday, October 14, 2017 Tupelo High School Renasant Stadium • 4125 Golden Wave Drive • Tupelo, MS 38801 Gates Open at 8:00 a.m. • Festival Starts at 8:52 a.m. • 1A, 2A & 3A Awards 1:15 pm | 4A, 5A & 6A Awards at 6:15 pm
Admission is $8 per person for the festival and $7 for the night contest or $12 for all day 32 bands will be competing for ratings and trophies with bands coming from throughout Northeast Mississippi. Bands are divided into six classifications determined by the enrollment of the High School from which the band comes. The band classes are: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A. There are 32 bands with a total of 2997 students participating. The average size of the band is 93 members. The students will be arriving on 75 buses and 48 equipment trucks and trailers. Approximately 180 Tupelo High School Band Boosters will work in different capacities at the Marching Festival such as: Stadium Marshals, Gate Keepers, Parking Buses, Concession Stand Workers, Tractor Drivers, and Etc. to insure a smooth operated Festival. Units to be judged will be the Band, Drum Major, Auxiliary Units (Colorguard, Dancers or Majorettes) and Drumline. There will be 3 judges for the band, while one judge each will adjudicate the other 3 areas. The judges adjudicate the performance and assign a Division rating according to certain criteria. The ratings are as follows: Division I - Superior; Division II - Excellent; Division III - Good; Division IV - Fair. Superior is the highest rating. There are a total of 6 judges to adjudicate all aspects of the bands. There are 3 band judges that evaluate the bands’ performance which is averaged to come up with the Band’s Final Rating. The Drum Major judge evaluates the Field Commanders. The Auxiliary judge evaluates the Flags, Rifles, and Majorette/Dance Lines in the execution of their routines and how well they contribute to the overall band’s performance. The Percussion Judge evaluates the percussion section on how well they perform their music, how well they stabilize the tempos and their contribution to the overall band’s Performance. The judges are all expert in their field. They are band directors, colorguard instructors, percussion instructors, and visual coordinators from across the Eastern United States. This year’s band judges are Randal Box from Brentwood, TN, Phil Hughes from Arlington, TN, and Kevin Thomas from Fayette, AL. The percussion judge is Daniel Vargason from Franklin,
TN. The Drum Major judge is Michael Rosson from Franklin, TN and the Auxiliary judge is Brian Giddens from Montclair, NJ. The MHSAA Region One State Marching Evaluation, formerly the Mississippi Invitational Marching Festival, is in its 47th year. It is one of the oldest and most successful Marching Festivals in the Southeastern United States and is the second oldest marching festival in the state of Mississippi. Over 1,000 bands have participated in the past 46 years, which represents over 89,000 students. The Festival is sponsored by the Tupelo High School Band Boosters with Rick Murphy, Tupelo High School Band Director, as Festival Coordinator. This year’s Festival is one of five Mississippi High School Activities Association State Region Marching Festivals held around the state. The band ratings will be included with the Concert and Sight Reading portion of State Band Festival Ratings to award the prestigious MHSAA Sweepstakes Award, signifying only those bands who receive All-Superior Ratings. The Northern Mississippi Concert and Sight Reading Festival is also held at Tupelo High School in the Performing Arts Center in April. The Mississippi Invitational Marching Festival was started in 1971 by Floyd Stevens, former Band Director at Tupelo High School and the Tupelo High School Band Boosters with Bill Pegues serving as President. The purpose of the Mississippi Invitational Marching Festival at that time was to give the bands of North Mississippi, Northwest Alabama, and West Tennessee a festival to attend with outstanding judges that will give a fair and consistent evaluation of the band’s performance for ratings, awards, and the recognition that goes with outstanding achievement. Even though out of state bands are not allowed to participate because this Festival is a MHSAA Regional Festival, the purpose remains the same. The public is encouraged to come see the longest half-time show in North Mississippi! Guest bands will be the University of North Alabama “Pride of Dixie” Marching Band performing at 12:50 p.m. and the Itawamba Community College “All-American Band” performing at 5:50 p.m.
Mississippi Invitational Marching Classic Saturday, October 14, 2017
Tupelo High School Renasant Stadium • 4125 Golden Wave Drive • Tupelo, MS 38801
Contest Starts at 7:15 p.m. • Admission $7.00 per person The Mississippi Invitational Marching Classic continues to be a tradition following the day shows at the MHSAA Evaluation. The MIMC gives bands the opportunity to compete against each other for awards in various captions. Bands are divided into two classes, the Blue and the Gold, by band size, not school classification. Bands compete for Best in Class for Band, Guard, Percussion, and Drum Major. This year, bands will compete for Overall Placement Awards. Awards will be given to the band, regardless of size, with the highest music score, visual score, effect score, percussion score and guard score. Placements awards will be given for Seventh Place to Grand Champion, First Place. The judging panel will have nine judges and they will utilize Caption Judging where each judge will evaluate the bands in one of three captions: Music 45%, Marching-Visual 35%, and General Effect 20%. There will be two Judges in each caption with the scores being averaged with each caption and added to come up with an overall score. Caption Judging enables each adjudicator to focus on one area of performance rather than all areas giving each band a better evaluation of their performance.
This year, the contest will introduce a new judging scheme for Mississippi: One music judge will be on the field, sampling individual players as they perform. Another visual judge will be on the field, evaluating how each individual student marches on the field. Both these judges will be looking for uniformity in style and technique across the entire band. This year’s judges are Music Ensemble: Phil Hughes of Arlington, TN; Music Individual: Jacob Campos of Franklin, TN; Visual Ensemble: Kevin Thomas of Fayette, AL; Visual Individual: Michael Rosson of Franklin, TN; Music Effect: Randal Box of Brentwood, TN; Visual Effect: Connie Cathey of Columbia, TN; Percussion: Daniel Vargason of Franklin, TN; Guard: Brian Giddens of Montclair, NJ. The Mississippi Invitational Marching Classic will begin at 7:15 p.m. The awards ceremony will be at 9:20 p.m. The Tupelo High School Band will perform in Exhibition at 9:00 p.m. (Because Tupelo hosts the event, it does not compete.) Who will be the Champion of the Mississippi Invitational Marching Classic? Come see who the Champion will be.
