WELCOME TO PONTOTOC
It's Bodock Time!
September 11, 2021 on Main Street Downtown Pontotoc
W
elcome to the 27th Annual Bodock Festival! We are happy you have chosen to be a part of the festival on this special day. This year’s festival falls on Saturday, September 11, 2021. It is the 20th Anniversary of 9/11. We do want to enjoy the freedom to have fun; however, we also want this to be a time of remembrance and reflection. We have
mindfully and respectably chosen a Patriotic Theme for this year’s festival. Please take time to notice our displays of patriotism-- from our American Flags throughout downtown to the Patriotic Music our entertainers will be singing. Bodock was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid Pandemic. Having the festival this year has been a hard decision for the Bodock Board

due to Covid continuing to be a part of our lives. Our retail stores, restaurants, as well as our vendors are dependent on the Bodock Festival for the economic sustainability of their businesses. We understand you realize the dangers associated with Covid, and we ask that you be as cautious as possible during this event. If you have been exposed to Covid or have symptoms of Covid, we ask that you not be a part of this year’s festival. Hopefully, next year will be back to normal. Whether you’re here for the Tour de Bodock Bicycle Ride, the Car and Antique Tractor Show, or just here to eat your favorite funnel cake, there’s something for everyone! We
have great music lined up, and you’ll certainly want to stay through the last performance of the night to hear Tupelo Honey featuring Pontotoc’s own Jordyn Mallory. All Bodock festivities will be on or near Main Street, so work your way to Historic Downtown Pontotoc for a great day of fun! Sincerely,
Beth Luther Waldo, Director Pontotoc Co. Chamber & Main St. Assoc.
We hope that everyone has a safe and fun time at the 27th Annual Bodock Festival!

SATURDAY ENTERTAINMENT
The Johnsons The Johnsons from Houston, Mississippi will open the evening entertainment with some good ole gospel music to sooth the soul. The group has been singing together since 2010. The group members are Shae Johnson (mother) and children Kirk and Kirklyn Johnson (twin sons) and LaSarah Johnson (daughter). They will be bringing the inspirational hour which will consist of a mixture of gospel songs as well as perform the National Anthem in honor of 9/11. The family testimony will be shared as well to inspire others to strengthen their faith during times of uncertainty. They serve as autism awareness advocates as the twins Kirk and
Kirklyn were born autistic and very low on the spectrum. The children were nonverbal until the age of 4 and miraculously started speaking spontaneously after a revival service. Some of the songs you will enjoy hearing from this group are: Rejoice, Farther Along, Church Song, Better Place, and a few others. This group has been called a God anointed group with every thing they do being based on service to the Lord and to others. Their enthusiasm and motivation for God is sure to bless your heart. Read more about them at unfinishedclay. org. This family will perform from 4-5 p.m.

Tupelo Honey ZACH MOODY AND JORDYN MALLORY Tupelo Honey blends the voices of two amazing singers, Jordyn Mallory and Zach Moody. Coincidentally, Mallory and Moody are both from Tupelo, Mississippi, but they didn’t join up as a duo until they lived in Nashville. While Elvis Presley will always be the most famous musician from Tupelo, Tupelo Honey has the makings of superstars. Undiscovered Nashville believes Jordyn and Zach’s musical chemistry and harmonies will take them places. Before forming Tupelo Honey, Jordyn Mallory and Zach Moody had their separate journeys to Music City. Moody said, “I grew up playing music in church. Once I could play guitar, I was always part of the praise band. After graduation, I went to Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi. I joined Campus Country, which was a school-funded country band. It was there
where I got involved in country music and learned the Nashville Number System. After finishing college, I moved to Nashville seven years ago, where I began hitting the circuit, finding people to play with here and there. Jordyn and I reconnected about a year and a half ago.” Moody was not the only one who grew up singing in church. Mallory said, “I fell in love with music at a young age. My grandma sang, and I began singing with her in church. My mom, my Aunt Angel, and I started coming to Nashville about once a month, and this kept me on the path toward getting to Nashville. After graduating early from high school, I moved to town. I fell in love with the city, and I knew it would be my second home. However, Mississippi will always feel like home. I did the solo thing for a long time, and there were many ups and downs. At times, I
20 | Bodock Festival 2021
thought I was close to a record deal, only to be disappointed.” One might think it was only natural that Jordyn and Zach would form Tupelo Honey after growing up in Tupelo, but it wouldn’t occur until they moved to Nashville. Mallory said, “Zach and I met when I was in high school, and he was in college. Tupelo has a small music scene, and we met at different festivals and gigs. I moved to Nashville before Zach did, but we never reconnected until a mutual friend suggested we get together to write and play some music. We finally made it happen, and it worked.” Hit songwriter, Will Rambeaux, was their mutual friend. Before Tupelo Honey, Zach Moody did a lot of work playing guitar and singing background vocals. Moody said, “I enjoy adding to what somebody already has. I think my days in Campus Country, singing harmony with female artists, helped me develop my craft.” Mallory said, “Harmony came naturally for us, and I think that is what made Tupelo Honey the right move for us. Everything blended so well. When you have that musical chemistry, it’s special.” Jordyn Mallory had created a good following for herself, and Zach Moody was a wellrespected musician in town before forming their duo. I wondered what this the right time for such a move. Mallory said, “It was the per-
fect time for me to make a move. I felt like so many ups and downs and changes were happening in my life. Musically, I needed a clean slate. I’ve always loved the idea of being in a duo or a group. However, nobody had along that felt right until Zach.” Moody said, “I was bored and thought, why not? I’m kidding.” Tupelo Honey, musically speaking, is a good match. Jordyn said, “Going into Tupelo Honey, I had been writing for a long time. I am more lyrical, and Zach is melody and music-driven, so it’s a good combination. It was essential for us to have a fresh and current sound, but we are fans of all real instruments. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean a traditional sound. There is also a hint of a bluesy thing.” Tupelo Honey released “Teardrops in the Rain” on March 19, 2021, the follow-up to the duo’s debut single, “Never Coulda Dreamed You Better.” Their debut was a driving, upbeat song. Their latest single takes a different turn. “Teardrops in the Rain” was written by Sherrie Austin and Mike Walker. Will Rambeaux produced the new release too. Read more about these two at undiscoverednashville.com. You can hear this special blend of voices from Nashville live on the stage Saturday night at Bodock. They will perform from 8:30 p.m. until.

Many Americans could not believe what they were seeing. Planes hit the twin towers, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, and a fourth in a field in Pennsylvania. Do you remember where you were that day? Do you remember the patriotism that surged in your heart during the next weeks that followed that day? That attack affected every American and people throughout the world. It was the first time many of us had ever witnessed such atrocities. Sometimes as we step away from history it becomes old news. But as the world again becomes a volatile powder keg it is imperative that we remember who we are fighting. And remember they have no scruples and no mercy. Just take that bright Tuesday, September 11, 2001 as a prime example. America was provoked into war in 1941. We were a peace loving nation going about our own business and we were attacked. But that attack was on a military base. That is a place you should be ready for an out-side enemy to come and get you. September 11 was different. These people were just going to work. They were just getting up and going about their day. They were totally innocent and evil men used planes to kill them. It behooves us on this 20 anniversary to pause and remember and the museum is going to give you the opportunity to do just that. The museum will have a display in the lobby honoring all the sacrifices that were made for and on behalf of our country that day. Don’t forget to go by and see it and remember why our freedom is so precious. The hours of the display will be from 10 a.m. - 3 pm. A reception will be held in front of the museum (outside) honoring troops and first responders from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Please come by.

Tour de Bodock Bicycle Rides Are you ready to enjoy some late summer fun with your family on the Tanglefoot Trail? Well look no further than the 2021 Tour de Bodock Bicycle Rides at the Bodock Festival, September 11, with the starting gun to go off at 8:00 a.m. “We are excited about this year’s event. The Tanglefoot Trail is such a treasure for our community, and this is a great opportunity to enjoy the Trail and all of its physical and mental health benefits,” said Bob McGee, coordinator of the event. “Our ride is designed for riders of all ages and abilities. It’s intended to be a fun event that benefits the Tanglefoot Trail. It’s also a bargain. Riders receive a quality shirt, rest stop refreshments, a finisher’s medal, and food and entertainment at the finish line, not to mention a beautiful course on which to ride,” he added. McGee said their are four distance options, “You either choose 10K (6.2 Miles), 20 Mile, 50K (31 Miles), and 100K (62 Miles); and riders also have a choice of routes with or without hills with the 50K and 100K rides,” he noted. This pleasure ride is not a bike race. “This is a family friendly event,” he stressed, “so you and your children can come and enjoy riding on the trail. This is being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and we are hon-
oring our first responders.” And just to keep you riding for your goal, McGee said that everyone gets rewarded. “All finishers of any of the events will receive a unique finisher’s medal.” Please be at the First Choice Gateway in Pontotoc in plenty of time before the race starts to get your bicycle ready. “All rides start and finish there,” said McGee. Rest stops with refreshments will be available at the Whistle Stops at Ecru, Ingomar, and Algoma and at the Gateway in Pontotoc. Food and entertainment will be provided at the Gateway in Pontotoc. Local artist Bob Ray will play and sing for cyclists and their families. Entry fee is $40 for the 10K and $45 for all other events. You can enter online at raceroster.com or in person at the Chamber of Commerce located at 109 North Main Street in Pontotoc. All net proceeds will go to the maintenance of the Tanglefoot Trail. We could not do this event without our sponsors,” said McGee. “They include: Wood Eye Clinic, Dr. Steve Montgomery, Dr. Chris Park, Complete Computers of Batesville, South Main Dental, Mike Simon, Crossroads Rehabilitation and Collins Insurance Agency of New Albany.”
