Coffee shop owner sets social media standard BY CARLIE KOLLATH BUSINESS JOURNAL
STARKVILLE – Strange Brew Coffeehouse owner Shane Reed carries two cell phones on different networks just to be sure he’ll always have access to his Twitter account. “I’m kind of addicted,” he said. Reed tweets as @sbcoffeehouse and is prolific on the social media site that sends out updates in 140 characters or less. He’s earned a cult following from people who look to his feed for quirky movie quotes, Mississippi State University sports trivia or his latest coffee creation (Bacon & Caramel Frappe and Girl Scout Cookie Frappes). He was the first coffee shop to sell coffee via Twitter. And, he’s been retweeted by @Jack, a cofounder of Twitter.
“It blows my mind,” he said. Reed was an early user of “I’m just some idiot on Twitter.” Facebook and Twitter. Restaurants adjust to the new reality BY DENNIS SEID BUSINESS JOURNAL
Gas prices are high, food prices are high and disposable income is spread thin. For restaurateurs, it’s just another bump in the road to recovery. But Mike Cashion, executive director of the Mississippi Restaurant and Hospitality Association, said things are far better than during the depths of the recession. “The trajectory is still not strong in general, but it’s not as bad as it was two or three years ago,” he said. Back then, it was the same story – high gas and food prices, made worse by a tanking economy. But now, there’s a sense that the worst is over with the economy, Cashion said. Diners have gotten used to higher prices and have found their way back to restaurants, he said. Several area restaurateurs agree. Blair Hughes, owner of Park Heights in Tupelo, said the upscale restaurant made it through the worst of the recession. And while it didn’t go through the

maybe we’ve found the right combination.” Little said low prices aren’t necessarily what customers are searching for. Rather, he thinks they’re looking for the right balance of quality and value. “Our core market is the 16-to-40 age range, and that’s what we’re hearing,” Little said. One of the newest restaurants to Tupelo is Buffalo Wild Wings, which opened in late January. Owner Rick Story, who also owns the BWW in Florence, Ala., said business continues to excel. “The reception in Tupelo has been awesome,” he said. “For what we have to offer – wings, beer and sports – it’s not recession-proof, but people still like the combination no matter what the economy is doing.” So while other prices continue to rise, diners have grown accustomed to them and willing to open their wallets again when it comes to going out to eat. “They adjusted to the new reality,” Little said. dennis.seid@journalinc.com

To test his effectiveness, Reed cut out all paid advertising in 2011, relying only on social media and word of mouth to get his message out. His audience: 5,700 on Twitter; 1,100 “likes” on Facebook; 3,940 followers on Instagram; and 420 followers on Pinterest. Business increased 32 percent, he said, acknowledging that other factors may have contributed to the increase as well. “Instead of making a commercial, we were able to give stuff away to our customers,” he said. New products sold faster than ever before, he said. The medium isn’t for everyone, but Reed said it’s working for him. “You have to love it or you’re not going to enjoy it,” he said. “You can’t force it. Just have fun with it. Get your culture out there.” carlie.kollath@journalinc.com

We know who you are and what you buy
achines are getting too smart. I recently read that Kraft has a new vending machine that can determine a person’s age. Called iSample, this vending machine is in service at the Shedd museum in Chicago and the South Street Seaport ferry service in New York. Kraft uses it to dispense samples of Temptations, a jelly-based dessert, but only to adults. The iSample, which was developed with the help of Intel, scans a customer’s face and uses body measurements, such as the distance between the eyes, ears and nose, to guess a person’s age and sex. If a child requests food, the machine asks them in a humorous way to move away. Kraft told the BBC that the company has big plans for iSample. Delivering free samples to people of a target audience is only one application of the audience impression metric software on which it runs. Kraft believes that iSample could determine other characteristics of customers. For instance, it might examine clothing and jewelry to determine a person’s economic status. Such data would be captured, along with the identifier of the product a customer se-
lects. Analysis of this data would tell Kraft what groups of people buy which products. Vendors can only dream of this type of marketing analysis at present. Other companies have used Intel’s TED AIM software for HOLT similar purposes. Adidas used AIM to control a video display based on whether male or female shoppers were present. Harley-Davidson used AIM to determine the hours when women visited its Toronto, Ontario showroom.
LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCE
AIM also has the ability to “learn” from experience. The more people who use the machine, the more accurate the machine’s guesses become. At first the machine was most accurate for Caucasians. Now accuracy is climbing for people of other races. If you’re concerned about privacy,

While iSample stores no images or personal information, that’s not to say it couldn’t be altered to do so or that future models won’t. In fact, facial recognition software has been around since the 1960s. Facial recognition software analyzes a person’s facial features and digitizes the analysis. When that person enters a room, the software performs the same analysis and looks for matches in its database. It’s not necessary for this software to examine you in person. It can digitize your face from a photograph, such as those you might post in social networking sites like Facebook. Various sources report that busi-
nesses are using facial recognition software to determine who their customers are and to track their buying habits. Facebook, Google and various governments are also heavy into facial recognition technology. One well-known incident occurred in 2001, at the Super Bowl, in Tampa, Fla. Police used facial recognition software to scan the crowd and found 19 people with minor criminal records. I wonder what comes next, perhaps a vending machine that tells me, “Go away, Holt. You’re too fat already.”

Monaghan named ambassador of the fourth quarter Haley Monaghan, CFO/HR Director for Alliance Collection Service, has been named Ambassador of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2011-2012. Monaghan attained this honor by attending 15 ribbon cuttings, mentoring three CDF member businesses, volunteering during the Business to Business Connection, and Taste of Tupelo. Monaghan will celebrate her 10-year anniversary with Alliance Collection Service in August 2012, a company that was chosen as one of the top 30 collection agencies in the nation to work for in 2011. They were also in the top 50 companies to work for in the state of Mississippi in 2010. “Our industry returns $54 billion to the U.S. economy annually. I am proud to be a part of a company that strives to change the public perception of collection agencies by treating people with dignity and respect,” said Monaghan. Monaghan was born and raised in Amory, MS, where she still resides with her husband and two children. Her daughter attends the University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi, as a education major, and her son is finishing up his sixth
grade year at Amory Middle School. Her family attends Grace Fellowship Church, where her husband is theWorship Leader. In her spare time, Monaghan loves to travel, shop, ride horses, grill, and spend time with family and friends. She has enjoyed her second year serving as a CDF Ambassador, and looks forward to beginning her third year next month. “Being an Ambassador is a wonderful tool for networking and meeting new business people. I have met so many people through the ribbon cuttings, golf tournament, B2B, and other CDF events,” said Monaghan. “It is a great way to find out what new businesses have come to the area and what they do.” The CDF Ambassadors are a prestigious group of individuals from the Community Development Foundation member investors, who volunteer to enhance communication between CDF and its membership. The Ambassadors serve as a vital link in helping CDF understand the needs of its membership. Ambassadors are required to attend events such as First Friday, Groundbreakings, Ribbon Cuttings, and any other functions
in support of the Community Development Foundation. A major benefit of attending Ambassadors Club meetings is the exchange of ideas and leads within the Ambassadors Club membership.

Downtown Tupelo to host a restaurant week BY CARLIE KOLLATH BUSINESS JOURNAL
TUPELO – Downtown Tupelo restaurateurs will host a restaurant week in September. Blair Hughes, owner of Park Heights in Fairpark, hopes to have a week packed with food specials and good times from Sept. 6 through Sept. 13. Hughes has formed a restaurant subcommittee through the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association to flesh out the idea. Bar-B-Q by Jim, Fairpark Grill, the Great American Grill inside the Hilton Garden Inn, Mrs. Robinson’s Grill, Papa V’s Deli, Park Heights, Romie’s Barbeque, Atlanta Bar & Grill, Cafe 212, Tea for T’Arts and the Stables are scheduled to participate. Hughes said she’s following up with the other restaurants downtown. The owners are looking at how other city’s conduct their restaurant weeks. Some have a set price that all participating restaurants adhere to, while oth-
ers have participating restaurants offer a special for the week. Some restaurants also involve charities, with a nonprofit organization getting a monetary donation at the end of the week. Hughes’ group is investigating what will work best for the downtown restaurants, which vary in price and in style of their meal offerings. They also are looking into incorporating other downtown events that week, including the First Thursday event with the retailers and the Down on Main concert Sept. 13. Downtown Tupelo is home to a growing number of restaurants. They include Atlanta Bar & Grill, Bar-B-Q by Jim, Cafe 212, the coffee shop inside Main Attraction, Fairpark Grill, The Great American Grill inside the Hilton Garden Inn, Mrs. Robinson’s Grill, Nautical Whimsey, Papa V’s Deli, Park Heights, the Stables, Live from the Kitchen and Tea for T’Arts. Plus, Mugshots hopes to open in December in Fairpark. carlie.kollath@journalinc.com
