Landscape lumens fit every home style, budget
BY GINNA PARSONS
A decorative light, like this squirrel, runs about $150, but generally only one or two is used in the landscape.
To Increase Resale Of Your Home
TUPELO – If you’re thinking about putting some landscape lighting around your home, your first step is not a trip to the home store. Rather, it’s a phone call. “I like to start with a licensed, bonded electrician,” said M.J. Justice, manager of the Lighting Gallery in Tupelo. “He will educate you on what he can do as far as the power you have available. You’ve got to have transformers in place before you can have lighting.” The next thing to determine is the type of lighting you want. “In the back of the house, I feel like you need landscape lighting to show off trees,” Justice said. “In the front, you’re showing off the architecture of the house.” Lighting from the ground up is practical and probably shows everything off to the best advantage, she said. “When you light from above – called moonlighting – you have to think about changing those bulbs,” Justice said. “One lady had to hire a bucket truck to change her bulbs.” The number of lights you need depends on the size of the area and the

A variety of landscape lighting, from practical to decorative, is available at the Lighting Gallery in Tupelo. size of your house. Justice recommends lights be placed no closer than 3 to 5 feet apart, depending on the wattage of the bulb and the type of fixture. “First, you have your all-purpose, standard, functional lighting,” she said. “Well lights, wall washes and bullets fit in this category. They’re basically functional, so you kind of want to hide them. Bronze is the most popular finish – they need to blend in with the ground. You don’t want to draw attention to these fixtures.” Well lights are the least expensive, starting at about $55 each. Then you have your decorative lights, which can run $150 each or more. “A decorative fixture is nice in the garden, but
they deserve attention,” she said. “So you’re only going to want one to an area.” Justice said chain stores have landscape lighting kits that come with a transformer and three or four lights, for the do-ityourselfer. “The drawback to those, though, is you can’t add lights to it,” she said. “You get what you get.” Kathryn Gatlin, owner of the Lighting Gallery, said LED lighting is becoming more popular in the landscape. “It is more expensive, but you will save money with LED in the longrun,” she said. “You get the most lumens for the least amount of wattage. And one advantage of LED is you don’t have to change the light bulbs very often.”
Neither Justice nor Gatlin recommend solar lighting for the landscape. “It’s a great idea, but they aren’t perfected yet,” Justice said. “Technology hasn’t caught up with them. They’re not for the long term,” Gatlin added. Justice said the biggest mistake people make when lighting the landscape is using too much. “It’s the biggest mistake, even when professionals do it,” she said. “We call it light trespass,” Gatlin said. “It’s when you have too much of a good thing. When you have overdone it and your neighbors are talking about your landscape lighting, that’s light trespass. You’re not aiming for a Disney World effect.” ginna.parsons@journalinc.com

Maloney said her love of flowers started when she was about 9 years old. Her father always had a little garden in a vacant lot and he would let her plant zinnias in it. “I was growing peppermint zinnias and my mother had me make a small arrangement and she took it to the fair and I won a little ribbon for

Maloney said. “That’s what most old country people had back then. Flowers, rather than a yard, in front of their homes. You didn’t grow grass, you grew flowers. That’s what I do.” ginna.parsons@journalinc.com

he way you choose to use colors in your home is a reflection of your personality. It’s only natural that as you change, the colors of your décor will change, too. Let Pantone’s nine color palettes for 2013 guide you to express your true self in one of the following ways: CONNOISSEUR puts a fresh spin on old-world elegance, with decorative pieces that layer texture. Refined and sophisticated with just the right amount of understated drama, it draws STEPHEN THOMPSON from cool neutrals like alyssum white and beechnut green, contrasts with warmer tones of violets and orchids, liquid pink and deep mahogany, all set against accents of champagne beige and silver. EXTRACTS’ colors come from culinary inspirations, combining spicy colors with fresher shades. They’re comforting overall, with unexpected pops of color to season the palette. Spiced coral, brandied melon, apple cinnamon, dusty pink, and baked clay stand out against tart and green banana. FOOTPRINTS celebrates vibrant tribal hues. Tangerine tango, peacock blue, fiery pink flambé, solar-powered yellow, and an oasis green are some of the colors included. GLAMOUR conjures the polished sexiness of the art deco era, where distinctly moody tones dominate. Rio red, Monaco blue, tap shoe black, chinchilla, ethereal gray, moonmist, and jasper teal make up this color board. NEW OLD SCHOOL replaces Glamour’s softer neutrals with more saturated versions. The look reflects colors commonly found in flags, with a slightly preppy bent. Ribbon red, bright white, sodalite blue, nautical blue, a deep brownish green and ultramarine green are combined. Butterfly bush, butterfly weed welcome namesakes

Butterfly weed is a common sight beside Mississippi roadways and a surefire butterfly magnet. This lowmaintenance plant was a Mississippi Medallion Native Plant winner in 2012. eral colors. Treat butterfly bush like a flowering perennial. When new shoots start to appear in the spring, prune last year’s growth back to about 6 inches from the ground. This encourages new growth and allows the flowers to bloom on new wood. Deadheading helps side shoots develop larger flower heads. Butterfly bush has few pests, but it may get spider mites. Use the hose to give the foliage a hard spray to discourage the pests. Butterfly bushes are beautiful and easy to grow. They take hot and dry weather in stride and keep the butterflies coming to your garden. The other surefire butterfly magnet is butterfly weed. Butterfly weed is a com-
mon sight along interstates and highways during the late summer. The deep orange flowers stand out on cut embankments as a testament to the plant’s low maintenance requirements. This plant was named the Mississippi Medallion Native Plant winner for 2012, and it deserves a place in your garden. Butterfly weed grows up to 36 inches tall and 24 inches wide with an upright, clumping growth habit. The clusters of tubular flowers are various shades of orange, and some are shaded towards yellow or red. Remove seed pods after blooms have faded to reduce reseeding. Seed pods removed and dried just before opening make a good material for dried arrangements.
As the name suggests, butterfly bushes such as this Buzz Velvet Buddleia attract butterflies all summer long.
Butterflies and hummingbirds love the flowers displayed on the arching, graceful stems of this Flutterby Grande Blueberry Cobbler butterfly bush. Butterfly weed can grow anywhere in Mississippi with good drainage. While this plant does not like to have wet feet, its close relative the swamp milkweed likes it wet. Swamp milkweed has red, pink and white flowers. Several years ago, I had a swamp milkweed that was covered with literally hun-
dreds of Monarch caterpillars. Cocoons attached to everything, but I didn’t watch it close enough. One day I came out to find all of the cocoons empty. Can you believe I didn’t see a single butterfly emerge? For a dynamic color contrast, plant the orangeflowered butterfly weed
with the bluish-purple globe thistle and the blue haze of Russian sage.

think all gardeners love to see butterflies visit their gardens in the summer months. If you want more butterflies this year, start planning now what to plant this spring to attract them. I want to tell you about two of my favorite plants that are guaranteed to attract these garden visitors. Butterfly bush has a loose growing habit that should never be contained by pruning. The flowers are sweetly fragrant clusters of tiny GARY blooms BACHMAN that come in various shades of white, blue, purple, pink, red and even yellow. Flowers are displayed on arching, graceful stems. Butterflies and hummingbirds love these flowers. Plant butterfly bushes in the full sun for best flowering. Shade will reduce their flowering, and the plant will become thin and leggy. Butterfly bushes can handle hot, dry weather, but water them deeply a couple of times a month during drought conditions. Butterfly bushes tolerate any soil type as long as it’s well drained, but they grow best in a slightly alkaline soil. If the soil pH is below 7.0, apply a couple of handfuls of dolomite to the soil when planting. Fertilize sparingly as overfertilization can reduce the plant’s winter hardiness. Some new varieties on the market include the Flutterby and Buzz series, which are available in sev-

Tips to start composting for your garden It doesn’t matter if you’re a gardening novice trying to supplement your dinner table with some home-grown veggies or an entrepreneur that earns a living off the land, composting is a simple way to go green and help save the environment. You don’t have to be an environmentalist to compost, either. Compost, which is organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled and used for fertilizing soil, is great for your garden and will help reduce landfill waste. In addition, composting in your home garden will help you save money. “Using compost means your garden will be more cost-effective because you will have to spend less on fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides for a given harvest of any crop,” says Brett L. Markham, author of “The Mini Farming Guide to Composting,” the latest in his Mini Farming book series. Across the country people are embracing the concept of selfsufficiency and preparedness, “mini farming” anywhere, from rooftop urban gardens to suburban backyards to larger land plots. Growing food is easier than ever and composting is a huge part of this movement. Markham, who also has written the bestselling “Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre” as well as mini farming guides to fermenting and vegetable gardening, offers these gardening tips to get started on composting: • Composting is a natural form of recycling, so use food waste, grass clippings, coffee grounds and even paper as compost. Just be sure to shred the paper first to speed up the process. • Start your compost pile in a convenient spot, and make sure it is semi-shaded and welldrained. • Add bulking agents such as wood chips to accelerate the breakdown of organic materials,

author of “The Mini Farming Guide to Composting,” allowing the finished material to fully stabilize and mature through a curing process. Add leaves, straw, or hay along with grass clippings or green manures for plenty of bulk. Each layer should be no more than two inches so that the grass clippings or leaves don’t get matted down to form a layer impermeable to air. • Keep the compost moist. Either water it yourself or let rain take care of it. The compost should be moist, but not soaked. • Cover the compost pile to help retain moisture and heat. This will also help prevent the compost from being over-watered by the rain. • Turn the compost pile with a shovel or a fork to aerate the pile. It is important to water the pile as you turn it as well. Turning the pile adds oxygen to the compost which is necessary to get the most out of your pile. • Once you add the compost to your garden, you’ll be ready to start planting in two to five weeks! Take the stress out of spring cleaning Throw open those doors and windows – there is no better cure for months of winter than some fresh spring air. But with spring, comes spring cleaning. And if the thought of pulling out mops, buckets and brooms brings on more stress than serenity, remember that a few tricks and some great tunes can make cleaning easier and perhaps even fun.
SET THE MOOD
There are work playlists, workout playlists – why not a cleaning playlist? Put together some of your favorite, preferably upbeat tunes to motivate you while you’re working and keep that music playing when you’re moving from room to room. Give your nose some sensory motivation too. Spray a fresh clean scent to remind you of what’s to come when the work is done.

system ensures peak efficiency, which means you’re only watering your lawn when necessary. This is great for your grass and plants – and for your pocketbook. New technologies are making it even easier to optimize a watering plan for your lawn, as they can be controlled from the comfort of your computer or from a handheld remote you can take into your backyard. For example, the Irritrol PCW Control system is a software system that allows you to set up an irrigation calendar for different areas of your property. This smart technology can even connect to the Internet and retrieve the day’s weather for your zip code, and change watering time and frequency accordingly. Homeowners can visit www.irritrol.com to learn more.

MAINTAIN YOUR EQUIPMENT
Keeping your mower properly maintained will
save you time all season long. For walking mowers, a good maintenance routine is as follows: • Carefully check blades for sharpness. • Make sure the cutting deck is clear of clippings. Cooking spray on the underside of the deck will make a new mower easier to clean. • Check pull cords to ensure they aren’t frayed. • Check that attachments are connected and working properly. • If you use your mower infrequently, fill the tank with a fuel stabilizer. • Periodically change the oil and perform air filter maintenance.
LESS IS MORE
It’s tempting to cut the grass as frequently as do your neighbors. But where mowing is concerned, less is more. You can prevent weeds from taking over your lawn by letting your grass grow out a bit, as longer grass supports a deeper root system. If you
cut more than one-third of the grass length, you will have clumps of clippings that lie on top of the lawn, slower decomposition, and a less attractive, bristly appearing lawn Keeping grass longer also allows it greater surface area to carry out photosynthesis, which results in healthier plants. In addition, taller grass grows slower than shorter grass. You can use this fact to eliminate up to 20 percent of the mowing you do annually, an average savings of about eight hours a year, not to mention the savings of gasoline and wear on equipment. When you do cut the grass, be sure you’re using great time-saving equipment. A model with great maneuverability will give you greater control around landscaping and obstacles. With all that time saved working on your lawn, you’ll have more time to kick back, relax and simply enjoy your lawn instead.
