Big patterns and melon colors mark children’s fashion DAILY JOURNAL
TUPELO – Bold tropical colors and jumbo eye-catching patterns define this spring’s trends in children’s fashion. “We’re seeing a lot of the big neon color blocks that were around in the ’80s,” said Juli Palmer, manager of the Corner Shoe Store in Tupelo. “We’re seeing a lot of chevron and Aztec patterns.” While Palmer said certain traditions never go out of style, such as a classic white smock, funky accents like rose and butterfly embellishments spice up the newer lines. Creative cuts, like the “high-low dress,” which is short in the front and dips down in the back, also add an offthe-beaten-path appeal. “Another thing we’re seeing is a kind of ‘mini-me’ trend, where adult looks are tailored to be appropriate for children,” Palmer said. “For instance, if you have a women’s high heel shoe, often times you’ll see the same shoe for girls, except without the high heel.” Over at Reed’s, the “mini-me” effect has resulted in brands like Toms, Sanuk and The North Face lines for children. “Take a brand like Chaco that has been around for 20 years, but they really exploded with the kids’ line they released two years ago,” said Reed’s ordering manager Jill Hart. She said though these normally adult brands are a little more pricey, customers will be able to tell a difference in the quality. Reed’s touts many American-made lines, but even

ordering manager, Reed’s some of these brands are drawing international inspiration. “One brand that has been really popular is called the Tea Collection, and they really stick out for their worldwide vision. Lots of clothes from this year were inspired by African-type designs and colors,” she said. Silly Simpson’s owner and operator DeAnna Russell describes this year’s color pattern as “melon colors.” “There are lots of bright greens and oranges this year, and coral is just everywhere,” she said. Russell said boys’ styles remained fairly traditional, though patterned knit shirts were overtaking solid ones, but girls’ fashion was seeing a lot more flare. “Lots of floral prints and lots of embellishments and interesting buttons,” she said. “Kids like to wear loud, funky things, and this year’s patterns really have kids more excited to wear their clothes.” riley.manning@journalinc.com

Make a statement BY SHEENA BARNETT DAILY JOURNAL
TUPELO – Brights and pastels, polka dots and big florals: This spring is all about standing out in a crowd. For women’s fashions, pretty pastels are mixing with eye-popping neons, and patterns of all styles are mixing to create a bold, yet feminine, spring look. “This is one of the prettiest palettes I’ve seen in a while,” said Erica Holloway, owner of Ella Ivy in Pontotoc. “It’s so pretty, so feminine, so vintage. It’s so fun.” Krista Blanchard of the ladies’ department at Reed’s agreed. “Color is everywhere,” she said. Usually, colors in spring are either super bright or very toned-down, but this season, there’s a healthy mix of both. “We’re seeing pastels and bright neons,” said Jade Gaskin, owner of Luxe Boutique in Tupelo. The most popular shades for spring are mint greens and peachy corals. Pink blushes and ivory are also popular, Holloway said. “Last year was all about pairing everything with white jeans, but this year it’s ivory skinnies,” she said. “All the colors look so good with these.” Black and white styles and patterns are in style this spring, too. Florals are the most popular patterns, but you can’t go wrong with polka dots and geometrics. Many of the big floral patterns have a vintage look to them, Holloway said. Embellishments, like lace, chains, studs, sequins and embroidery, are all in style. Sequins are especially stylish at Reed’s. They’re on everything from shorts to mini skirts. “It’s even in daywear, and they’re in bright colors. You can transition it from daywear to night time. You can throw it on with a cute shirt, or even a T-shirt and wedges,” Blanchard said.
DEMAND DENIM
Shorts are big sellers at Ella Ivy, from classy polka dot shorts to more fun styles with leopard prints. “We’ve been in business for seven years, and dresses have always been a big staple, but now we offer as many shorts,” Holloway said. “Pair them with a cute wedge, and they’re equally as dressy. Mix it with a feminine top to take the edge off.” Last season saw a few printed pants, but they’re super stylish for spring, Blan-
chard said. Pants of all lengths are in style at Reed’s, from shorts to capris to fulllength. Colored denim is still stylish – in fact, denim is a great look even in tops, too. Denim shirts, especially with lace detail or with feminine floral accents, are must-haves. Layering styles is also popular at Ella Ivy; brightly colored blazers coordinate with cute tops for a look that transitions from cool spring days to early summer heat. Dresses are always in style, from maxis to minis. “Maxi dresses are still out there, and so are rompers. Neither are going anywhere,” Blanchard said.
COMPLETE THE LOOK
Go for the gold in jewelry, and don’t shy from the big pieces or layering smaller ones, Gaskin said. “I like a big statement necklace with a solid top,” Gaskin said. “Or wear a big, solid necklace that breaks up a big print around your face.” Always-classy pearls are in style, Holloway said. Your feet have two major options this spring: wedges and flats. Wedges with embellishments like fringe, buckles or two-tones of colors are everywhere, Holloway and Gaskin said. Go for a non-printed wood heel for wedges, Gaskin said. Oxford styles are hot, whether with a heel or without. Blanchard said even more comfortable shoes have an edge, like studs or bright colors. Light-weight scarves are trendy and also come in neons and pastel hues, Blanchard said. “Infinity scarves are a good way to pop some color into your wardrobe,” she said.

Her outfit is from Luxe. It’s OK to mix pastel shades and neon hues. “You don’t want to wear all neon, so you can break it up with a little pastel” or vice versa, Blanchard said. “Certain people can pull off certain looks,” Gaskin said. “I wouldn’t mix too many details. I go for a more clean, stream-lined, trendy look. But it just depends on the person. Mixing prints is a fine art.” sheena.barnett@journalinc.com

PATTERNS
Tribal, geometric and ornate baroque patterns dominated the fall and winter. The easiest of these to carry into spring is the chevron pattern. Chevron, a sort of horizontal zig zag pattern, also has concealment properties. The pattern comes in a variety of colors and clothing. If chevron is a bit of a reach for your personal style, try traditional stripes. Pair a black and white striped boat neck top with your best fitting jeans for a casual look. Be sure to add a pop of color in your jewelry, shoes or handbag. Also wider stripes, at varying placement and sizes, help dispel the rumor that stripes make you look wider.
ACCESSORIES
Bright yellows, pinks and oranges are finding their way into footwear and jewelry for this season. The bib and collar necklaces that took over the fall have transformed into chunky beaded necklaces or statement bib-styled necklaces with geometric shapes. Other color options for those who want more muted hues include a sunflower yellow, a calming lavender and the ever versatile turquoise. Another staple is a simple gold necklace. “A good gold necklace can go with anything. It can go with your go-to outfit, it can go with a little a black dress,” Hancock said. Remember, with large statement jewelry, you must let that piece shine. With a chunky necklace, wear smaller earrings and rings. Maybe even ditch the bracelet altogether.
Carrie Hancock, owner of Yellow Lovebirds, pairs two spring fashion trends: the wedge heel and the chunky statement necklace.
ON THE COVER Top left corner, Harris Rhea models for MLM Clothiers. ••• Top right corner, Amberly Rogers, 23, of Oxford, sports clothing from Luxe Boutique. ••• Bottom left corner, Jessica Roye dresses for spring in clothes from Reed’s.
SHOES
Footwear is the foundation of your outfit and there is no better foundation than a wedge heel or a pair of espadrilles this spring. Because of the wider, more sturdy heel, it has more wear time with your look. Nude or neutral color shoes, whether pumps or flats, are an every season staple. They will make any look more pulled together. Keeping these few ideas in mind, don't forget that your comfort is your confidence. Feeling uncomfortable in a certain trend is perfectly OK. Add what is uniquely yours to spin your own personal style. marissabeth.humphrey@journalinc.com

I
wouldn’t recommend running in a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor basketball shoes, but that was about the only option for a casual jogger 40 years ago. As a high school football player training in the offseason, I wanted something more functional and less painful to wear for my daily runs. On a visit to a local sporting goods store, I discovered a genuine running shoe – the Adidas SL 72 model. It wasn’t the standard black or white canvas, rubber-bottomed Chuck. Instead, the shoe’s upper was royal blue nylon, with three leather stripes and a firm rubber-like sole. I was hooked ... not on running, but on wearing high-tech and somewhat stylish footwear. Over the years – with my wife’s blessing most of the time – I’ve purchased quite a number of the “newest thing” in athletic shoes. I’ve worn just about every model Nike’s produced in its successful Air Jordan line. I onced owned a pair of Tennessee orange leather Converse weapons – a fa-

Resort wear
BY SARAH ROBINSON DAILY JOURNAL
You don’t have to travel to a fabulous tropical resort to enjoy resort wear. The ever-popular resort wear trend is a great way to jump start your summer wardrobe, according to Dale Simmons at Reed’s in downtown Tupelo. Resort wear describes a line of fashion that was originally created to accommodate folks traveling to warm weather destinations during cold winter months. Although it begins appearing in stores just after the new year, the line focuses on fresh spring looks. Lily Pulitzer and Tommy Bahama are the most recognizable pioneers of the trend. Today, every one from Chanel to the Gap offers a resort line.
Reed’s has a large selection of resort wear this season. Colorful and white linen predominate the line. “Our customers really want bright colors,” Simmons said. “They are ready to get out of the doldrums” of winter. Simmons said the spring line always has a tropical or nautical feel. She said it is predominated this year by bold stripes, black and white, and navy. While bright colors emphasize the tropical feel, foundation pieces in black, white and navy highlight the line’s maritime roots. Pant styles vary this year. Solid colorful linen, wide-legged pants traditional to the line are definitely represented but some different looks are also out there. Capri pants are turning up in linen
this year and more structured, heavy cotton pants are bright and colorful with patterns. Tory Burch, a popular fashion line out of New York, is one of a growing number of designers to devote an entire look to resort wear this year. Burch highlighted lace prints and Mediterranean colors and pants that are “slender but not overly skinny.” Simmons said although colored denim that has been popular for the past few seasons is still hot this year, she has seen shoppers returning to structured, cotton pants. Tory Burch and Trina Turk both offer slim, flat-front options in cool summer hues. Reed’s carries resort wear selections by designers like Trina Turk, Milly and Johnny Was. The cen-

terpiece of the Johnny Was line, exclusive to Reed’s, is an array of loose, flowing tops with vintage look and feel in bright colors and patterns for warm weather. Simmons said one of her favorite looks this year are drip-dye shirts. She said loose fits, airy fabrics and bright colors make the drip-dye pieces ageless. Simmons said the price point on drip-dye shirts is also appealing and runs from about $60 to $100. Dresses this year seem be dominated by short, sporty looks in bright colors with lots of zig zag patterns. Simmons explained that the resort wear line is great for our warm climate. “It transitions well into summer,” she said. “Colorful linens and white linens are great through August and into September.” Another hot item this spring in the resort wear line comes from James Jean. Simmons said her favorite is “the blush color that is so fabulous.” One trick to keeping resort wear fresh: Avoid LAUREN WOOD | DAILY JOURNAL over-accessorizing. You spent how much?
Northeast Mississippi folks recall shelling out big bucks for clothing, accessories BY GINNA PARSONS DAILY JOURNAL
Sometimes, you’re out shopping and you come across a piece of clothing or an accessory you think you can’t live without. And then you look at the price tag and realize you might have to eat rice and beans for the rest of the year if you purchase it.

Louis Rowles of Amory said his big splurge was a pair of gray wool slacks to wear with a navy blazer. “It was the third year of my teaching career,” Rowles said. “I brought home about $500 a month and had to pay rent and a car payment out of that, and those slacks cost $60 plus tax. I had nothing dressy and thought I needed them. I wore them for years and even took them to have a small moth hole patched after I had worn them about five years. “I have spent more for a single item since, but that was such a huge investment for me at the time ... and I had no credit cards, so it was cash. I probably ate peas and cornbread for a week to make ends meet that month, but when I wore those pants, I felt like I was uptown.”

DO YOU DARE?
Monia Beasley did. The Tupelo mother of three said the most money she ever spent on an item of clothing, other than her wedding dress, was $300. “I was working as a buyer for the Parisian store in Hoover, Ala., in the 1980s and we were having the big grand opening and we’d invited all our reps in for it.” Beasley said. “I saw this dress at another Parisian and it was gorgeous and I had to have it to wear for the occasion. It was $300. “I bought it and wore it to the opening and then for other occasions, like out to dinner and stuff. I never regretted buying it at the time. It just made complete sense to me. Of course, I was in my 20s then, and single. Today, it seems a bit ridiculous.”
