Alabama back up where it belongs – for now
T
here was a great disturbance in The Force when the preseason AP college football poll anointed Southern Cal as the favorite. The coaches, at least, had the good sense to top their poll with an SEC team – in this case, LSU. But the results of the first weekend put defending national champion Alabama where it should have been from the start – atop both major polls. So for a fifth year in a row, Alabama has ascended to No. 1. This Tide team looks it could stay there a while, too. Tell me again how Nick Saban is overpaid? No, he’s worth every penny for a program that demands nothing less than a national contender every season. Led by Alabama, there are five SEC teams in the top 10 this week. None of them came close to impressing in the way the Tide did last weekend. This might still be the year that the SEC’s stranglehold on college football is ended, after a
remarkable string of six national champions. But if so, the rest of the country has some work to do. After crunching JOHN L. the first PITTS week’s numbers, USA Today guru Jeff Sagarin says there’s not a team in the county that could stay within eight points of Alabama on a neutral field. Which suggests that Alabama’s biggest obstacle to back-to-back titles will be the Tide itself, and how it deals with the need to be at its best in every game, as every opponent tries to take its best shot. The biggest question about Alabama was supposed to be on the defensive side of the ball, |
FIVE GAMES TO WATCH
Georgia at Missouri: This is a dangerous early trip into the Midwest for the No. 7-ranked Bulldogs, who were favored in the preseason to win the SEC East. Show-me Missouri fans know they have only one chance to make their first SEC impression. Florida at Texas A&M: Careful what you wish for. Texas A&M left the Big 12 last year because it got tired of Texas always getting its way. The Aggies now face the cold, hard truth of the SEC. Texas A&M plays the No. 24 Gators in

where six starters had departed. But the buzz around Tide camp was that several of the new starters might be better than the guys they replaced, as hard as that might be to imagine. It’s easier to appreciate now, after that Saturday night dismantling of Michigan.
JUST ONE GAME
We can read too much into one game, of course, but the defending national champs played the best opener among any of the real contenders. There are many tough weekends ahead – and Alabama plays two of its top challengers, Arkansas and LSU, on the road. For those teams, with aspirations to win the SEC, and to reach the national championship game, the task is clear. You want to be the champ? You’ve got to beat the champ. Good luck. John L. Pitts (john.pitts@journalinc.com) is sports editor of the Journal.

College Station without benefit of a warm-up, as last weekend’s opener against Louisiana Tech was postponed because of Hurricane Isaac. Washington at LSU: Here’s a game that pits Pac-12 pride against the tenacious No. 3 Tigers. The scary thought is Washington allowed 67 points to Baylor in last year’s Alamo Bowl. And the Pac12 had a shaky opening weekend. with Colorado and Cal dropping openers to Colorado State and Nevada. Duke at Stanford: There will be a lot of brain power on display in Palo Alto.
Hard to believe Duke is the team coming off an impressive opener with its 46-26 win over Florida International. Stanford, starting the post-Andrew Luck era, struggled in a 20-17 victory over San Jose State. Nebraska at UCLA: It was only a few years ago that Rick Neuheisel made his home coaching debut for the Bruins with an emotional win over Tennessee at the Rose Bowl. Now, Jim Mora makes his home debut against the No. 16 Cornhuskers. Los Angeles Times

Rebels counting on young players to quickly deliver DEPTH CHARTS, 7B KEYS TO THE GAME, 9B BY PARRISH ALFORD DAILY JOURNAL
OXFORD – In his effort to rebuild Ole Miss football and lead the Rebels out of the wilderness, Hugh Freeze will put his trust in some very young UTEP guides. AT OLE MISS “We’re going to play these freshmen. We’re just not deep enough at places,” he said. Eleven true freshmen – a mix of scholarship players and walk-ons – participated in the Rebels’ 49-27 season-opening win over Central Arkansas. The number won’t always be that high, but plenty of them will be back on the field tonight at 6 against Texas-El Paso. Freshman quarterback Maikhail Miller got in the last two series against the Bears, because Freeze believes he will need three quarterbacks this season. Not all of the young guys were
limited to mop-up duty. Six true freshmen are listed on the Rebels’ depth chart in addition to 10 redshirt freshmen are first-year junior college transfers. The starting lineup includes junior college transfers in Bo Wallace at quarterback and Pierce Burton at right tackle along with true freshman Issac Gross at nose tackle.
DEMANDING SPOT
Freeze is asking Gross and offensive lineman Ben Still, another true freshman, to hold their own at the most physical positions in the SEC. Both are trying to put on weight during the season. “At South Panola we were yearround working on me to keep my appetite,” Gross said. “I eat late nights, I eat like all day.” It’s a problem many would love to have, but Gross has ground to cover, listed at just 254 pounds. Still, meanwhile, comes in at 280 and is listed as the backup center behind junior Evan Swindall. Still could work his way into a playing rotation that offensive
line coach Matt Luke hopes will reach eight or nine players. “I came in thinking I would redshirt. That wasn’t my goal. My goal was to come in and work hard, earn a spot and get some playing time,” he said. Gross quickly turned heads in camp and was elevated to the first team. He played only 12 snaps against UCA before leaving with a calf injury. He practiced this week and is expected to start tonight where he will often match up with UTEP senior center Eloy Atkinson (6-3, 315), who will outweigh him by 61 pounds – and Gross hasn’t even reached the SEC yet. “Later on down the line I know it will get rough playing 250 in the SEC. All I can do is just keep working on my technique and keep playing hard,” Gross said. He plays with confidence, too. Asked if he thought it was hard for big guys to block small quick guys, he responded: “Yes sir, it’s hard. Real hard.” parrish.alford@journalinc.com

Darius Slay makes his way to the end zone after pulling down an interception in the first half last week.
Auburn needed an upgrade on defense – 18 games in which it yielded 30 or more points in Gene Chizik’s first three seasons – so it brought in Brian VanGorder as defensive coordinator. VanGorder spent the past four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, but is best known as the defensive coordinator at Georgia from 2001-04. He was named as the nation’s top assistant coach in 2003.
Recorded first career sack against JSU.

The official UTEP biography of head coach Mike Price understandably fails to mention his brief tenure in 2003 as head coach at Alabama. He left the team shortly after spring practice due to off-field issues. He resurfaced in 2004 as head coach at UTEP, where he has posted a 45-533 record, with six sub-.500 seasons after back-to-back eight-win campaigns to open his tenure in El Paso.

Scouting report: Auburn at Mississippi State KEYS FOR VICTORY
1. BLOCK THE ENDS Auburn has some fast defensive ends – like Dee Ford and Corey Lemonier – and they accounted for three of the Tigers’ four sacks last week against Clemson. Today they’ll be going up against some MSU tackles who haven’t fully proved themselves. Right tackle Charles Siddoway graded out around 80 percent against Jackson State and did a solid job against its best pass rusher, Joseph LeBeau. But this is obviously another level of defensive end Siddoway will be facing today. On the other side, Blaine Clausell is facing his biggest litmus test to date and can’t afford to leave Tyler Russell’s blind side exposed. 2. REMAIN CALM MSU used a lot of young players last week, and several will play today in varying capacities. Coaches talked earlier in the week of how nervous some of them were against Jackson State. Nervousness and uncertainty won’t get it done against Auburn, and in fact could lead to the kind of start that marked last year’s meeting, when the Tigers staked a 14-0 lead. The JSU game was for getting the butterflies out.
highly unlikely Frazier will do much damage against State’s fine secondary. Last week, Auburn was led on the ground by Tre Mason (106 yards) and Onterio McCalebb (82 yards).
WHAT TO WATCH
WHEN AUBURN HAS THE BALL Frazier is a first-year starter, but they let him fling it around a good bit against Clemson. As MSU coach Dan Mullen has noted, Auburn seems to still be searching for its offensive identity. It has a new offensive coordinator, Scot Loeffler, who succeeded Mullen as Florida’s OC in 2009. Loeffler also has coached at Michigan and Temple, and his offense won’t be AP quite as spread-heavy as that of his QB Kiehl Frazier, 11 for 27 passing last predecessor, Gus Malzahn. There are week, makes his first SEC start today. ample options in the running game, an area Loeffler’s Temple offense excelled 3. CONTAIN THE RUN in last season. Auburn is a run-first team, and that In the passing game, two of Frazier’s includes quarterback Kiehl Frazier. The top targets will be Emory Blake and sophomore has not yet developed into a Philip Lutzenkirchen. Blake had 108 strong passer, and he was 11 of 27 yards and a TD against MSU last year. against Clemson last week. MSU’s front seven is awfully stout, WHEN MSU HAS THE BALL and it’ll be up to guys like Kaleb Eulls MSU spread it around last week, with and Curtis Virges and Cam Lawrence to eight players catching passes and five keep ball carriers corralled. Because it’s running backs getting five or more car-

ries. MSU might not achieve the same kind of balance this week, but that’s the basic goal. Russell, the junior quarterback, didn’t try to stretch the field last week. That could have been a product of State not wanting to show Auburn too much of the offense, which is expected to produce more explosive plays this season. The running game will play a huge role today as MSU tries to set the tempo, and the more Russell is handing off, the less he’ll be worrying about a possible mismatch at both ends of the trenches.
CRUCIAL MATCHUP
MSU’S DEFENSIVE LINE VS. AUBURN OFFENSIVE LINE The Tigers get starting center Reese Dismukes back today after he served a one-game suspension for a public intoxication arrest. Still, this is a fairly young line that has six freshman on its two-deep, including two who start: left tackle Greg Robinson and right tackle Avery Young. MSU has a very deep defensive line with a good bit of experience. Josh Boyd and Denico Autry could potentially have big games, and winning up front in the SEC usually portends victory. Brad Locke

Scouting report: UTEP at Ole Miss 3 KEYS FOR VICTORY
1.START FAST If a team can develop a personality after one game, the personality for Ole Miss right now is offense, and the Rebels need to impose their will early. Beating Central Arkansas was important and gave the Rebels some confidence, but it wouldn’t take much against a stronger opponent for doubt to creep back in.
with fluids during the UCA game was because of pure excitement and adrenaline. Maintaining composure is important. The Rebels will need their best players on the field.
WHAT TO WATCH
2.PLAY WITH YOUR EYES It seems obvious, but sometimes looking ahead on a play leads to being out of position. That’s what defensive coaches said was the main problem when the Rebels gave up 237 yards to UCA in the first half. Things were much better in the second half. If the Rebels aren’t fundamentally sound for two quarters tonight, the deficit could be more than the six points by which they trailed at halftime last week.
WHEN UTEP HAS THE BALL The Miners have been labeled a passing team under Mike Price, but nothing was farther from the truth as they pushed Oklahoma to the limit. Quarterback Nick Lamaison was just 6 for 23 passing for 39 yards. He’s the preseason All-Conference USA quarterback, and those numbers will get better, but he’ll be missing one of his top receivers this week in senior Michael Edwards, who is also a special teams threat. Look for UTEP to try and exploit for four quarters the interior of the Ole Miss defense as Central Arkansas did for two quarters. Sophomore running back Nathan Jeffery averaged 8.4 yards per carry against the Sooners.
3.KEEP EMOTIONS IN CHECK A lot of young guys are getting major playing time for Ole Miss. Hugh Freeze said part of the reason several players had to be pumped
WHEN OLE MISS HAS THE BALL Both quarterbacks, Bo Wallace and Barry Brunetti, will again play, but Wallace clearly took the lead last week, completing 20 of 24 passes –
with two drops – for 264 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on a tipped ball. The Rebels need Wallace to be on again and to distribute to playmakers like Donte Moncrief, who had eight catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. The running back situation looks better for tonight. Starter Randall Mackey is healthy, and Jeff Scott, last year’s leading rusher, is available after missing the opening game with lingering back pain.
CRUCIAL MATCHUP
UTEP RB NATHAN JEFFERY VS. OLE MISS DL INTERIOR The Rebels played six defensive tackles before the first quarter was over last week. That’s a good thing in terms of keep people fresh, but it also suggest that they aren’t sure who their best players are at those spots right now. Whoever is in the game has to hold their ground and tie up blockers. That will allow the speed guys to crash in and make the tackle against Jeffery, who had 177 yards on 21 carries last week.
